when they took the stage here in philly in 1977, no one had any idea what we were in for, what staging, lighting and of course the music, the best elo opening ever
i have never forgotten this sensational opening at Wembley, it has remained with me for all these years and now I get to see it again, it is like it was yesterday.... where have all those years gone. Wonderful
I just got the great pleasure last week of being at the event in front of Capitol Records to see Jeff Lynne receive his STAR on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was an epic show with many of his friends & other musicians. Joe Walsh & Tom Petty, both spoke lovingly of Jeff and his great talents. Be sure to send Jeff and ELO as overdue candidates for the next ROCK HALL of FAME!
Wow!! The nice memories this brings me. I was a young man in the 70's and a good friend introduced me to ELO. Awesome music. I wish American Idol would do a tribute to this band.
The album "Out of the blue" is my absolute favourite from ELO. Incredible virtuosity, fantasticly arranged songs, where this one you can hear again and again. The whole album is an emotional rollercoaster... Too bad I didn't see a live concert of ELO.
isn't this song beautiful? .... i don't know how to describe it ..... it just all works together ..... A MASTERPIECE! ..... if not for the singing .... surely for the instrumental part!
One of my absolute faves. This one rocks!! My daughter was listening to and singing to this when she was a couple of years old just after the millenium!
'Sweet talking woman' on purple vinyl, ➡️ 'out of the blue' double lp ➡️ ELO live at Wembley on 📺 in 78' I was hooked and have been ever since. Such feelgood. Thank you JL
One of the greatest groups of all time...at least we (fans) have our memories...they will never all be together, again...mostly because of overinflated egos.
Polecam obejrzeć koncert Live in Wembley 1978 roku, ponieważ zawiera wszystkie utwory z tęj płyty,ja posiadam dwie wersje koncertu Live in Wembley na kasecie VHS i płycie DVD, to mam okazję porównać dwie wersje koncertu Live in Wembley.
This is ELO at their best. This album for me was their best. I bought it on vinyl when it was released in the 70's. and it consisted of 4 LPS. Now I have a single CD in my car. Still sounds wonderful.
I love the shot at 2:17. Other than Beven, the band is staged white with a black background. Awesome. I saw them in Buffalo, New York, but truth be told, I can't remember if they did this tune. As a 19 year old country hick, I was in TOTAL AWE....
I saw the Out of the Blue concert back in 197X...I didnt give a s^@t about the recorded music versus "live music".....That was the BEST stage show I had ever seen at the time. I loved ELO, and was so into their music, they could have been missing, and played a soundtrack I would have loved it1. Seriously, They were one of the better bands around, and they were "screwed" because" of a "taped" song...who cares...They made the original music!
From the best record - OUT OF THE BLUE. Best rock, best years, one of the best groups in the world. ....And today good music is gone. Like tears in the rain (Blade runner - Roy)
Słynny koncert zespołu Electric Light Orchestra z Wembley z roku 1978 z płyty CD Out of the blue,, Super koncert zespołu Electric Light Orchestra , oglądam go co jakiś czas ,mam go na DVD i nawet jeszcze na VHS .To był koncert charytatywny bo tam była rodzina królewska.
Just wish there were nice phone camera's and recordings back when this tour took place. It was a great memory and show. Can't imagine there will anything better. I'd pay big money to see a show like that again.
When I was young (probably 9, or 10 years old) seeing that spaceship stage, I thought it looked the bees knees, still looks cool now, and what a terrific song to boot.
this song ... especially at the beginning (instrumental) is so awesome ..... just grabs hold of my nerves .... in a good way .... and massages them, gently!
ELO DID NOT MIME ON STAGE. The studio versions of songs were dubbed for TV broadcast, that version AND THE VERSION WITH ELO PLAYING LIVE are both on DVD today.
Agreed my first concert was this tour and the songs were all performed live. There may have been some pre-recorded bits that were dropped in like some of the sound effects. The problem with a video like this is it just reinforces the misconception that ELO played a lot of pre-recorded stuff - they clearly didn't when I saw them. I remember being somewhat skeptical of how three string instruments and a Mellotron could sound like a full orchestra and the fact is they could not but they did have a unique sound that was quite good.
I seen the spaceship show in Detroit & Cleveland and it was live ! ...."except for a few bits dropped in"..(love this comment) elo always dropped in "bits" my first elo concert was "on the third day " tour & saw every tour after that, I definitely know the difference between elo recorded sound and live
I had a heartattack seeing this..........ABSOLUTLY FANTASTIC. I could not be more impressed. Thank you so much for sharing this. I can actually show my children what a concert from my time was. They already wish they lived in my time because of the music, wait till I share THIS with them. Fabulously happy. Thank you for sharing, Truely!
Tandy on the keyboards. Awesome. If I could come back in the next life, it would be the keyboardist for ELO!! Between the strings and keyboard, THEY made ELO!!
I agree. mAnd if that information had not been leaked, no one would have ever suspected it. It remains one of the best concerts I've been to. i saw them at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan.
I recall reading where Kelly Groucutt said once that they did play along to tapes, because he and Jeff couldn't cover all the vocals between the two of them. I'm not sure of just how much music was on tape, maybe just some back up vocals and some of the orchestral stuff. Anyway, Groucutt said that one of the things he liked about playing with ELO II was that they had enough vocalists between him and the new guys they hired that they could do the vocal arrangements justice.
I was there too, my first ever gig. At 14 I was stunned:) I have read interviews with Jeff Lynne about the miming and backing tracks saga....He apparently said that backing tracks were used as recreating Out of The Blue live would be nigh on impossible and they didn´t want to disappoint fans. However, everyone on stage played their instruments - I remember Richard T made a mistake in "Beethoven" I think this version has been changed. I have the CD and the video and it doesn´t sound this good:)
Yeah. then in 1981 I think it was, saw them at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. This time they did actually play live. I was on the main floor. But a co-worker who was also at that show nwas in the upper level and he said that stadium was less then half full. Thousands of people missed a great concert.
Check the other clip of this on TH-cam. It is live audio. For some reason, this one from the DVD with the Discovery bonus had the recorded song, while the other one is LIVE, LIVE, LIVE!!!!
johnlennon100,iwas never really into Abba apart from "Dancing Queen",which i assumme everyone loves, but i heard one of ABBAS "rarer"tracks the other day-EAGLE,ive listened to this song before but i didnt realise how talented ABBA actually were until now.
impeccable ...love Jeff's voice on this one ... I think Queen and ELO and Wings probably were the natural inheritors of the Beatles sound in the 70's ... ABBA also in the 80's ... even if you call them cheesy and commercial, but they have great songs ... if you notice reaaly carefully Fernando is very similar to Hey Jude, the Winner takes it all has big influence on Lennon's #9 Dream ...etc .. it all comes from the Beatles ..
@cooldudebailey It's actually a vocoder using white noise instead of a keyboard sound. "Concerto For A Rainy Day" is what it's saying. This is the album version, vocals & all.
i remember had this on my stereo stuck with my mates at portsmouth harbour in the rain when i was about 15 got told off by the station guard for being 2 loud good times
Awsome comment. I saw them at the silverdome and at first I was a little disappointed when I heard but no one can deny that if they wouldn't have known, there's no way you coiuld have tell. In fact, I heard the reason no one could get a refund was there was no proof that they didn't play live more than half of the show.
That was the same tour i saw, with Hall & Oates. I'll bet it was the best night of his life. As I said, the stadium was less then half full but the audience reaction was so loud, you could've swarn it was sold out.
it was -of course- live, but first number in this concert was with playback. The difference between sound of 1st part of the Concerto for Rainy... and other numbs is great, I like it and thinking it is good metod for greats video - to add studio sound
Probably but the ultimate goal for an artist is to create something really unique .... it doesn;t make sense just to copy the classics or have a big influence from them but to go to totally different perspectives and models.
Nice parsing of my statement. I stand by my remarks by the way. That is not to take anything away from the band as they were in the seventies / eighties (when Lynne left they hit the skids) because they they were an awesome unit. They just didn't play live all the time. There's no shame in that.
Amazing piece of work. So what if a backing tape was used for some parts, even bigger hats off to them -- imagine trying to play along to it back in that day, before in ear monitoring and click tracks were around, hell most big artists now a days lip sync to the full show -- Madonna / Kylie / Robbie!!, nevermind just a couple of songs. They could have never re created live what was done in the studio in they days without backing tracks. They led the way for todays artists, and excellent live now
Loved ELO in the early 70s and still love them 40 years later. THEY WILL NEVER EVER BE EQUALED.
To Susan from Suzanne -- you are 100% correct!
i still love them.51 years later
😍😍😍😍
ladies and gentlemen i give you the greatest rockband in the world today, the ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA.
when they took the stage here in philly in 1977, no one had any idea what we were in for, what staging, lighting and of course the music, the best elo opening ever
best music played ever!, simply perfect
i have never forgotten this sensational opening at Wembley, it has remained with me for all these years and now I get to see it again, it is like it was yesterday.... where have all those years gone. Wonderful
The best staged opening to a rock concert ever. Absolutely incredible. Saw this at wembley 1978 and will never forget it
I saw it in Milwaukee ! ❤️
@@tamathawalden2037 . I bet you had a great time watching the show in the USA
There was some great tunes on 'Out of the Blue' and this is one of them............
Everybody talks about ELO & Pink Floyd !(( Let's not Forget the Alan Parsons Project People ) Another Great Artist FACTS !!! 🤟🤟🤟
The 70's would not have been the same without ELO- their music was (and still is) exceptional!

The arrangement alone on this piece is a work of art.
Wow!! The nice memories this brings me. I was a young man in the 70's and a good friend introduced me to ELO. Awesome music. I wish American Idol would do a tribute to this band.

Too bad I didn't see a live concert of ELO.
One of their all time best tunes. I Love it...
Music repeats itself. It is not stealing or borrowing, it's natural.
isn't this song beautiful? .... i don't know how to describe it ..... it just all works together ..... A MASTERPIECE! ..... if not for the singing .... surely for the instrumental part!
oh man respect good old Beb Bevan a fine drummer and a straight man.
Holy crap I FREAKIN' LOVE ELO!!!! Each song I hear by them only gets better and better!!!
I saw them 1978 it was amazing!
Great seeing Kelly smile at 2:30
One of my absolute faves. This one rocks!! My daughter was listening to and singing to this when she was a couple of years old just after the millenium!
I totally love Elo and this is one of my very favorite Elo songs now and a song such as this well really stick in my head forever!
I'll love ELO forever!!!
'Sweet talking woman' on purple vinyl, ➡️ 'out of the blue' double lp ➡️ ELO live at Wembley on 📺 in 78' I was hooked and have been ever since. Such feelgood. Thank you JL
Out of the Blue, album of the year in the 70s, It was brilliant LP,

@SeniorNJNear a dude and a damned fine drummer. God, I love ELO.

Awesome video! I remember seeing this live at Wembley Arena when I was a kid. One of the best concerts ever....
I don't have the words to express how much I love Jeff and the band...thank you for this video! 💗

Cool Jeff, looking better than EVER, in his white blazer and trademark shades !!!
Saw this presentation in K.C. in the 70's. Awesome group!
Brings back a lot of memories: Seen them live in Toronto space ship and all. Love them
Just wish there were nice phone camera's and recordings back when this tour took place. It was a great memory and show. Can't imagine there will anything better. I'd pay big money to see a show like that again.
Ur money's Funny As F
When I was young (probably 9, or 10 years old) seeing that spaceship stage, I thought it looked the bees knees, still looks cool now, and what a terrific song to boot.
Hannah D as far as I can remember this was WEMBLEY in the UK. You can probably still buy this concert I am pretty sure you can.
this song ... especially at the beginning (instrumental) is so awesome ..... just grabs hold of my nerves .... in a good way .... and massages them, gently!
The best ,shall see them next week !

RIP SWEET PRINCE
wee kelly is in the spaceship upstairs now, his part in elo will live on, happy memories
Elite ELO! ❤
I love cranking this tune up in the car. Freakin' awesome......
I agree. mAnd if that information had not been leaked, no one would have ever suspected it. It remains one of the best concerts I've been to. i saw them at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan.
If pink floyd played this everyone would be waxing lyrics.I love floyd but i think ELO
must be one of the most underated bands of all time.

At 2:29, Jeff is gesturing, "turn it up!!!!"
ELO came to Portland, Maine but the spaceship ended up at the next stop in Canada. Still a great show!!!
Oh how I wish that I had continued playing the Cello.

Wonderful ..thanks for posting this ...I love ELO Concerto for a Rainy Day....
This is one of ELO's two greatest instrumental songs. The other one is "Fire on High". Both are awesome.
awesome assemblance of sound!
Most epic pop tune
Saw this concert live in 1979 at the Capitol Center in DC..Awesome event..
Thanks rockvidz. ELO
the build up and the instrumental at the beginning is something else .
@stevebenbob ABSOLUTELY! This must be their 1979 Wembley concert, or at least that same tour.
Yeah. then in 1981 I think it was, saw them at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. This time they did actually play live. I was on the main floor. But a co-worker who was also at that show nwas in the upper level and he said that stadium was less then half full. Thousands of people missed a great concert.

Esa música apoteósica de ELO es absolutamente inigualable, es sobrecogedora...
WOW

Mike Edwards descanse en paz....
@SeniorNJNear I love that song as well--love ELO period, but my favorite is "Do Ya".
The "Live At Wembley" DVD with the unfortunate audio mix that is essentially lifted directly from the "Out Of The Blue" LP.
fire on high is on face the music
Amazing piece of work.
