Hi. I just cleaned my air filter (Toyota Corolla 2003. Is it necessary to apply engine oil to it to help it trap air better

No it's necessary to apply engine oil to trap dirt better. In certain filters its recommended to apply oil, but unless your filter manufacturer clearly states that you need to apply oil, you don't have to.
