    Great beginner video but you need to change a few things. 1). You need to put a jack stand, spare wheel, a block, anything under the car in case the car slips off the ramps. I know it's rare but I've had it happen but luckily, I wasn't under it at that moment. 2). Obtain the proper size oil filter wrench and have on hand. 3). Everyone's hand strength is different. you should refer to the amount of turn to apply after the oil filter makes contact with the sealing surface. Put a mark on the filter with a Sharpie and have a filter wrench ready to apply the proper turn if you can't get it by hand. Every have a filter fall off while driving and you'll be a believer of properly tightening an oil filter. 4) The way you show to pour oil in can trap oil in the handle of the jug. You need to finish the pouring so the handle is empty as well. Make sure we don't waste any oil. 5). You also need to show driving the car down off the ramp, wiping the dipstick clean and rechecking the oil level after the car sits 5 to 10 minutes on a level surface. 6). You might also mention what to do with the used oil and filter. It can't go out with the trash. Address these things and I think you'll have the best oil change video for beginners out there.

      @@BigpoppaKC I mentioned it because I know it can happen. Been using car ramps for over 30 years and have heard of a vehicle falling off ramps twice, once on me and once on a relative. In my case, the vehicle was parked perfectly on the ramps, on a level surface. I drive up onto the ramps, put the vehicle in neutral so the wheels can settle into the ramp pockets, go to Park, and check the vehicle on the ramps evenly and square, then chock the other set of wheels. I had just been under the vehicle when I realized I had the wrong oil filter wrench. I went to get the correct wrench, heard a noise, came out and found the vehicle off of both ramps! I don't know how it happened but it spooked me a lot. You'd consider me overly cautious but I'm not nearly strong enough any more to lift a vehicle off of me :) and I'm too old to heal properly if I survived. My brain twists inside my skull when I try to figure how it happened, but I'm a believer in the worst can happen more often then we think. Thought about the earthquake thing, they're pretty rare in my area and but checked the USGS site a few days later and there weren't any that day. The ramps were and are in perfect condition. I now set a floor jack under the vehicle when on ramps.

      That's ridiculous. Cars don't slip off of ramps.

    There are two different engines in the 2006 Corolla, one takes 4.4 quarts, and the other takes 4.6 quarts. You don't want to overfill by defaulting to 5 quarts. Overfilling causes froth by the cam shaft hitting the oil and causing foam and which actually reduces proper lubrication. Check the manual and don't over fill above the line on the dipstick.

    • @kurtlicherovsky9908
      @kurtlicherovsky9908 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the oil filter will require a cup that 's .25 of a QT, But you are correct- Don't over fill, some oil will be left behind in the container, best to underfill a little. Run the engine for a few min check for leaks then shut off again wait a few mins then check oil, add or do nothing when oil is near full mark on the dipstick.

So I came on here to figure out if I f’d up the oil change and realized I drained the damn transmission oil and not the engine oil. So my car has no transmission oil and double the engine oil 🫠 I literally have no idea how I managed to f up this bad 😂😭 Thank God I didn’t go to work and trusted my instinct to figure the problem before worse problems! 🙏🏽

    You forgot one important step.
    Warm up the engine. This does two things:
    1. It thins the oil so it will drain quicker and more completely.
    2. It prevents the engine going into high idle / rapid warm-up when you restart it. There will be a period of zero oil pressure until the oil filter has filled completely, and you don't want a racing engine. If the engine has been warmed before changing the oil, it will lapse into its regular low idle immediately when you restart it.
    You should also have shown newbies how to use an oil filter socket or oil filter tool in case the old one won't budge when you try to loosen it. That's usually the case.

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for pointing out those important points!! It makes a big difference as far as how fast and how much old oil can be drained. I usually warm up the engine from a cold start for about 5 minutes to get it warm but not burning hot.
      I will definitely take these things into account for future videos I plan to create. I think I’m my prius oil change video I may have used the oil filter tool, if so I hope people can go to that video and reference how to use the tool. I sincerely appreciate the constructive feedback!

      Some shops do charge that much for “higher quality” oil. No promise they are actually using higher quality oil which may be sitting in large barrels for extended amounts of time nor if the filter they are installing is any good. And are they letting the oil drain completely or filling oil back to proper level? I’ve seen them change my oil in 5 minutes from it being on the lift and over filling with oil. After that I found it much better to change your own oil, with quality oil and filter, at a fraction of shops’ prices and get it done right to make your car’s engine last as long as possible! Great video good tips, Just curious, I’ve heard it is better to take off the oil filter while the drain plug is still off in case any more oil drops down to the pan while removing the oil filter? I could be wrong about that. I’ve also heard people tell me to fill the oil filter almost to the top before placing it back on just wondering if that makes a difference or not?

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching and commenting on my video! I hope it was helpful! I’ve never heard about taking the filter off when the drain plug due to oil dripping into the pan. I personally don’t think that happens but if you feel better about doing it that way it doesn’t hurt anything, just make sure the catch pan for the old oil is under everything. Yes I’ve seen ppl pre-fill the oil filter (obviously ones that you don’t install upside down or side ways) to help the oil pump no run dry on initial start up after the new oil filter has been installed. Personally speaking, I’ve never had issues with any of my cars without pre-filling the oil filter, and it only takes a couple seconds if that for the oil to enter the filter and then you are good. Once again you can do it either way you feel works, just make sure you don’t over fill in oil since the filter will already have oil in it. Thanks for the question!

    I've been doing my fiance's 08 Corolla oil for a while now, wouldn't it be wise to suggest pulling the car off the ramps first so it's level, also does the 08 Corolla run on normal 5w30 or synthetic because I've been using regular oil and I'm hoping I am not damaging it. It has high miles too, so immaculate look into changing to that. Online on days it takes synthetic but idk

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a good point! Oil should be checked once the car has started and pulled off the ramps. Then turn car off let it sit for a minute and check dipstick for an accurate reading. For my Corolla I know 5 quarts will get it to filled once the car runs and is leveled so unfortunately I didn’t include that part. Will make note for future videos! :)
      I personally like using Mobil 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic on my cars because I keep up maintenance as far as seals/gaskets that need to be replaced and I believe it to be quality oil. This is just my opinion. Use whatever’s up you’d like. This is a highly discussed topic. Just do your research, use quality oil and filter, use the right grade (5W-30 for this Corolla), do it on a timely schedule, and you will have a good running car for a long time!

    it will be better if you just let your oil continue to flow up until there is none (maybe an hour) before you put back the new oil.

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, you could let the oil drip for an hour or even longer if you’d like in order to attempt to get as much as possible out. However, once it’s slows to prolonged drip, I think the amount of oil you can get out isn’t really worth the wait. This is my personal opinion. If the oil is really bad sometimes (such as when I purchase a new vehicle) I’ll do an oil change and run the car 300-500 miles and change it again to get cleaner oil in there. Once again everyone has their own opinion when it comes to this and neither is wrong. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to watch my video! :)

    What do i do if the oil filter is really hard to get off

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you using a oil filter wrench like the one in the video? Usually that should give you enough leverage. Also make sure you are turning the filter in the appropriate direction to loosen it not tighten it.

  • @RusYTable
    @RusYTable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    my oil filter is extremely tightened. so hard to get it out. Even went to the store to get one of those wrench caps. Nothing works. So I guess I have to ask a mechanic to do it for me this time. Is it good to ask him to hand-screw the new oil filter back into slot so it will not be tight next time?

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They usually sell adjust clamps that I’ve used numerous times to get off stubborn oil filters from multiple cars. I’m not a fan of wrenches since they tend to slide if the fit or not perfect. If your interested I can give you a link to the tool.
      And yes I always recommend only hand tightening the oil filter to avoid issues like this as well as avoiding damage and oil leaking from a overly compressed oil filter gasket.

      Here is a link with some thoughts on when you should do a transmission fluid exchange on your corolla:
      www.toyotaofmanchesternh.com/when-to-change-transmission-fluid-manchester-nh/?
      I usually inspect and change fluid at 30k miles and at 60k I’ll drop the transmission pan to get more of the old fluid out and change out the filter. I never perform transmission flush which is offered at a lot of shops.That can cause damage to your transmission. Once again this is what I do and it’s worked for me. Please do your research and make your own decision, but hopefully this gives you a place to start.

    question: is it possible to not jack your car up enough to tilt the oil out adequately?

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      SeattleSaint728 I think this varies depending on the design of the oil pan; however, as in the case of this Corolla, I feel the ramps provided an adequate angle to get most of the oil out the pan. If the car was completely flat it would still be able to drain most of the fluid due to the “flat-back” oil pan design and the location of the drain bolt but in all honesty I think the difference in the amount of oil you get out is more dependent on how warm the oil is and how long you allow for it to drain. I like to have me engine warmed up a bit but not to complete operating temperature and let it drain for a good 20 minutes. This is why it’s Important to check the levels once you’ve filled it to “factory specifications” in case you need more oil since you got a bit more out. This is my humble opinion from my experience working on cars. Hope this helps!

    I want to say that all the videos that I have seen, installing the oil filter I don’t see that you do not Pour oil inside the filter 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️. Do you know when you turn on the car the first thing the car pull in the engine is the filter oil 🤔 so if you don’t put any oil in it you are getting nothing in the engine.

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that is correct. I do not put oil into the filter for most cars. The only time I will is when doing oil changes on large engines with large oil filters and only if they can be installed vertically so it doesn’t make a mess. There is a lot of back and forth about whether you should or should not add oil to the new filter prior to install. My personal preference is to not do it unless conditions I stated earlier. Once again this is my personal opinion not professional, as I am not a professional mechanic. You can do your own research, as I always encourage, and do what you feel is right. I’m just here to provide a simple guide on how you could do this at home, with quality oil, and a bit of your time. Thank you for watching the video and commenting! I do sincerely appreciate it!

    • @ShahGAutos90
      @ShahGAutos90  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I add all 5 quarts to mine and it works out perfectly once the oil runs thru the filter. I believe the spec varies depending on the year your corolla is. I would advise looking in your owners manual and adding as much as it directs you to have in there. Then get the car on a leveled surface and check the dipstick again to make sure you have enough oil. Add accordingly if needed.

    You should replace the oil drain plug gasket ( 9043012031 ) - use parts dot Toyota dot com to get very low price official OEM Toyota parts delivered to the Toyota dealership for pickup - there are tons of fakes now that 99% real in official looking boxes ... don't risk amazon or online or even auto parts stores - many are getting fakes.
    Also the Toyota oil filter is now ( 90915YZZN1 ).
    You should turn over the engine and let it rest for 5 minutes and recheck the oil level.
    The car should be off the ramps as well when checking the oil level.
    You should also mention that when on the ramps ideally there are wheel chocks behind the rear wheels and the car is in park and emergency brake is on, also, there have been cases when those plastic ramps have collapsed - make sure to the the heaviest duty plastic ramps (eg, the ones for trucks) even then I wouldn't trust them 100% like a proper jack stand or metal ramps.
    The Toyota engine air filter is 17801yzz03, the charcoal cabin air filter is 87139yzz12, the Toyota left driver side wiper is 85212yzz1jtm and the passenger right side wiper is 85212yzz1dtm.
    ATF is ATV-IV, 00279000T401, the radiator coolant is 00272SLLC2, the main serpentine belt is 900809113983, the park plugs are 9008091184 / dense SK16R11.
    Always get your VIN number and check any of these parts I've listed with parts dot Toyota dot com so you get 100% correct parts. I've also had great luck using Costco's Kirkland full synthetic 5W-30 - bob is the oil guy forms like it as well - before always using Mobil-1 full synthetic. I just had my valve cover off replacing a head gasket at 180k miles and it looks brand new in there.
    parts dot Toyota dot com has the real parts and the prices are often below the crappy third party parts at auto stores and amazon. Check them out.
