- I'm reviewing my 5 year old gaming laptop, the ACER Predator Helios 300 with an i7 7700HQ and a GTX 1060. Is it still recommendable?

I have this same laptop, and I must say I'm very impressed at how well it still holds up for gaming despite being 4 years old. You would think a gaming laptop would become obsolete after 4 years but it still runs the newest AAA games pretty well without having to drop the settings down too much

Im still using this right now. It's a beast and amazing! bought it in 2017 when I was a college. Now Im a working adult and I don't want to replace It yet. This laptop is Still rocking solid! since
I bought this around 2016 or 2017. It's still working which is thank god! But i now have issues with the battery, keyboard, speakers, internet. Still pretty usable and i can still game on it. Playing ghostwire rn. I also cleaned the fan and re-pasted. Significantly reduced the heat. :)
Thanks for the video. Its 2023 and got that from my local thrift store for a good price but with a wiped hard drive. I reinstalled windows and most of the drivers from Acers website but not sure of installing Bios drivers for the fear of bricking the device. I must say its a beautiful laptop and sounds phenomenal.

Still have mine. I got it on '19 not a good decision but i still love it, probably gonna change the motherboard if i want to upgrade the cpu, nice video btw!

still have this is my main computer plugged in with an external monitor. still holds up pretty well I've only had thermal problems but in my case it's still good as the day I got it (2018).
5 years ago, that cpu and gpu can be considered high-medium-end specs. so, can i assume the latest core i9-13900hx with rtx4060 will perform similar to this helios 300 after 5 years.
Uh I think the i9 13900hx should perform at least a bit better in 5 years in comparison 🤔

Hydronaut is most certainly better. But it's also 5-8 times more expensive per gramm.

4 years on work almost non stop with mid to heavy games and still working Iike a charm
didn't you face any build issues like having to replace screen or battery etc.

Upgrade 32GB, Ram and this bad boy still alive and kicking in 2022.
The only thing that would bother you is about Vram for upcoming games.
I would say, as a gaming laptop, it was an old tough veteran.

Might be worth sending it in for repair? See if there are any specialists for this laptop in your country. In Germany you can have it repaired for half the price it will get you on the used market...

Bought this from Costco 2018. The one they gave me had a twisted sata cable but I realized this when my warranty ended. Less storage now and a lot of glitches but had that not happened I know I would have been able to use it longer. Should I not let my experience discourage me and get the newest edition ?
I have had issues with my 2018 model since I bought it. It honestly runs like a total piece of shit, that's full of malware. But it's been that was since unboxing. And costumer service has been no help at all.

Oh buddy this laptop is a God send for work!! Absolutely fantastic. I have the same Helios 8750H + 1060 6GB with 32GB ram and I use it for AutoCAD & Photoshop. And its super fast. This laptop when released in 2018 was like a raw machine. Those who knew how to use it got the best results and those who didn't were unhappy with hot thermals. So here's my tip:
HARDWARE: Apply new thermal paste. A good quality one. Don't cheap out. Clean the cooling fans while you are at it. And at last, undervolt the CPU with throttleStop. Your CPU & GPU temps won't cross 80C & 75C respectively.
SOFTWARE: Stick to windows 10 specifically version 1909 (19H2). Running latest versions of windows 10 or even 11 will make this laptop less snappy. This laptop originally shipped with Win10 1809, but you can't pause win updates in that version. With Win10 1909 you can use a trick and pause Windows update for like 10yrs.

I have this laptop but it doesn't have the same processor, mine it's an i5. The problems that I have with this laptop are these:
-It's very slow and I'm very disappointed
-It has a problem with the speakers sometimes
The main problem is that the laptop is very slow. Any tips, please? In my country i paid around 1000$ for it and that is a lot for a laptop in this country.
I bought the laptop in 2018 and it was a little bit slow from the beginning but I didn't thought it was a problem. Today the speakers stopped for like 30 seconds and then started working again.

Let me guess, running Windows 11? Every 3-4 year old laptop will feel slow on Windows 11. Downgrade it back to Windows 10 19H2 version.
Would this run better than a Lenovo series 3? Or a medio erazer p10? Both have better gpu

Yes it should have another slot. For either m.2 or sata.

I still have this laptop and use it for VR. My 2 year old spilled water all over the keyboard and destroyed the NVME SSD lol so I decided to install windows on the 2TB HDD I had in there. Cyberpunk runs like shit on the HDD. Still love the laptop though

How do you get so great temperatures while playing. I got the Predator Helios 300 i7 8750h GTX1060 6GB and jesus christ, while playing mine reachs CPU 92º GPU 93º. I tried to undervolting ThrottleStop and MSI Afterburn, following the Hotel Hero guide on his channel, but no success. 4 years and im not so happy with this Notebook. Temperature SOLVED. Now im playing with 60-70 in games like Elden Ring.

This laptop, Helios 300 from 2018 was like a Raw machine. Those who knew how to use it got the best results and those who didn't, complained about thermals. This was the price we had to pay coz ACER really did give us 8750H + 1060 6GB at a really low price back then. So here's my tip:
Apply new thermal paste. Use good quality one. Don't cheap out. Use thermal grizzly kryonaut. You guys have no idea the importance of a good quality thermal paste. Also clean the cooling fans while you are at it. Then undervolt your CPU. Mine is set at -140. Yours maybe different. While gaming set the fan speed to "Custom" with slider around 2 step more from middle point or you can just set it to "Max" if you use headphones. And my temps never cross 80C for CPU and 75C for GPU while gaming.

Damnn is it only me with lots of problems, its been 4 years i brought laptop now i had to change components on bord and now display has flickering problemd after changing display, games only work smooth on windowed mode and at full screen game gets laged
I have the same laptop, and it does not work that well on my laptop, it cannot run Ark and League of Legends and that kind of games
🤔 Sounds like something is broken. Or like you are not using the GPU but the integrated graphics of the cpu. Lol should run perfectly fine.

i have the same laptop its great and runs vr very well pretty much the only problem with my one at least is the durability ive had to replace the screen twice but thats probably because i take it everywhere. other than that its great
Nice I’m about to pull the trigger getting one and vr is my main priority as I’m mostly getting this for vr flight sims. How are the graphics and does it over heat?
@@styrofoamx229 I don’t have the laptop anymore so I’ll have to go off memory but can’t really speak for graphics cus I have a rift cv1 but I ran most vr games on medium and got above 60 fps sometimes would dip down to 50 in really demanding parts of games but was never noticeable. Over heating wasn’t really an issue as most of the time I’d be using one of those cooling pad things unless I took it places then mabey after about 3-4 hours it would get noticeably hot but not like burning hot. Can’t speak for the newer models but for flat screen games I could easily play most games on high with above 60-70 fps so I’d say if you wanna get one go for it obviously it’s not as good as a desktop performance wise but being able to take it places an just do general laptop things more than makes up for the slight performance difference. I would recommend upgrading to 32 gigs of ram tho

I have same laptop but CPU temperature reaches 91c during gaming with max fan on and GPU remains below 65c. CPU area getting warm, should i change thermal paste or keep the genuine

I have one very similar one terabyte drive and 250 SSD drive... It runs really hot when we play war zone you guys recommend anything to drop the temperature on the GPU CPU
Undervolt + fans at full speed
Had the same issue. I bought the biggest laptop cooler I could find. 35 bucks I think. Then I downloaded intel extreme tuner and slightly undervolted the gpu. Runs about 75 frames 75 degrees now
Your solution: Apply new good quality thermal paste + clean the fans + undervolt the CPU. If you do this right, your CPU temps won't cross 80C while gaming.

I have the same laptop, I bought it on 2017. But I have an issue, like the charger keeps on connecting and disconnecting after it reaches 95%. It steadily charges from 20% to 95%. After that I hear beeping sounds. Even the laptop just shuts down by itself. Without running any heavy application.

i have same model but i had to change battery and i added ssd because hdd was not working properly last months and now it runs like new {i have it almost 5 years} one thing i dont like is keyboard some buttons just not working anymore but i dont care because i have external one

I have this laptop, and I have a BRAND NEW ASUS RoG Zypherus G15 with AMD Ryzen 9, GeForce 3070....
Today I am using my Helios 300 while my ASUS goes in for warranty work as the keys on the keyboard have fallen apart spit and broke as well as paint flaked off.... . The ACER, on the other hand.... is still going strong!!!!

I have this same laptop and although I do really love the thing. But I must be doing something wrong because connecting it to my Oculus 2 headset is unusable (either with the cable link or air link). So much jitter and lag it is unbearable.

Ah you've changed the comment. I was able to use it with my ocolus quest 1. Under one condition:
I undervolted the cpu and ran the fans at absolute maximum speed with the predator software by Acer. That way I was able to prevent the cpu from throttling. And it could play HL Alyx in an "okay" way.

@@Hubwood I undervolted my cpu and am running my fans at max and placed my laptop up high on a block - cpu temp is still 204 degrees (F). I live on a tropical island and have no A/C so my room is normally 87 degrees. Not sure what I can do lower the cpu temp.
I have one, and it died today due to overheating problems, its a piece of shit notebook from the day i bought it 😅😢
😱 Where do you live? Maybe there is some repair service that only charges when they're successfull? It's most likely just one part that's burned or broken...

Is it throttling?
4 crucial tips:
1. Renew Thermal paste. That will reduce the heat and help the fans to cope.
2. Install the predator software and have the fans run at 100%
3. Undervolt! The cpu! That is a must! It helps alot!
4. Use something to lift the laptop up a bit at the rear side. Like a laptop stand, so it can get more air from below, that helps alot aswell!
Soing all 4 will keep the laptop MUCH cooler.
@@Hubwood well it seems like my gpu fan blades is stuck somewhere...they are not rotating, no rpm is shown in predator sense..
Cpu fan is working fine.

This laptop sucks man. It was extremely slow and always freezes with basic programs si ce unboxing. Still can't figure out how to make it run because this is absolutely aweful especially for the high price tag. I'd have better luck with a cheap ass chrome book, it's that bad.

@@Hubwood doubtful. There are so many reviews on Reddit of people having similar issues with the 2017-2018 models. Out of the box slowness and overheating issues because of the aweful fan placement. There are much better Acrers out there I've read that the 2020 models of the predator Helios 300 being a lot better but the model I have is nothing but pure disappointment. It runs certain games ok, right now I'm playing F.E.A.R rn with little issue besides gram.rate dips, but that game came out over 15 years ago so, not a good benchmark anymore lol. As far as normal, start up programs and shit are concerned... This machine struggles badly. It's a shame, you'd expect a GAMING laptop to have decent performance, not Chromebook performance.

It is NOT running slow.
And the gaming performance of the gtx 1060 and the i7 7700hq is Excactly as expected
I am undervolting the cpu though! And running the Fans at high speed in combination keeps the cpu from thermalthrottling at all.
