  • I finally got the truck back after it blew up in West Arkansas!! But, I was lucky enough to tear the engine down over at Pure Diesel and go over what actually went wrong.
    This could be quite the debate among diesel gear heads, Watch the whole video and leave your comment below. What do you think happened?

    Have to agree with the mechanic. Piston cracked first and then the injector spray finished the job. Glad you guys got the rig fixed and can get back to doing what you love. Safe travels!

    I was in the RV biz when GM introduced the Duramax engine? Early on they were having problems with cracked heads and pistons and they determined that is was because the owners were doing long haul and hard pulls, like mountain climbs, then shutting the motor off immediately after stopping which caused the engine to overheat, without the coolant flowing this caused a spike overheat, thus cracking things!

      Never heard any issues with cracked pistons or heads with the LB7 or the LLY, not saying it didn't happen now and then, but nothing that was out of control. The LB7 had issues with the first run of Bosch injectors and would replace them under warranty. The LLY had more of an issue with the head gaskets going probably due to a bad turbo inlet causing EGTs to rise easier and lack of increasing the cooling system the the EGR cooler was added. In reality, any Duramax can pop a head gasket due to the difference in materials between the aluminum heads vs the iron blocks with different expansion rates. These early Duramax engines had some high compression. That with the boost makes for some high cylinder pressures. That's why they add piston squirters below each piston to help keep them cool.

    That was a great video. Answered a lot of questions. I’m not sure which one I would say. Either the piston or the injector. But I’m glad it’s back up and running.

    I just love that tilt over front end I wish that they would make this a option to have a tilt front end on my Dodge 3500 4 door long bed dullay 4x4 5.9 cummins with 6 speed manual and shift lever for the 4x4 and I ordered it that way because the automatic trans has to be rebuilt after a 100K and I never owned a auto until I got married and she drove a Miata manual and a Honda Prelude manual and a a little Chevy with a manual and her first automatic was a Montcarlo SS with a auto and it had factory race v6 and a friend that runs a Chevy dealer and he told me to get rid of that car and when you get 80K to get rid of it because that race motor if something goes wrong with that motor that no body knows how to fix it the right way and it will never run the same ever. It was a very strong motor with a lot of horse power and would fry the tires off and after that she has had 2 Honda Accords which are great cars and she drives a Accurate TL AWD and the high out put motor with 305 hp and have not had a single problem oh I for got they put 2 new drive shafts in it because of vibrations but after the third one it’s all good now with 82K on it and the drive shafts were under warranty.

    When your mechanic was talking about the engine diagnostic, he was talking a foreign language to me because I know nothing about diesel engines what so ever. So it was very interesting listing? I’m glad you were able to get it back to your own mechanic whom you were very comfortable with. That was a great piece of mind considering all that you and your family been through since the Arkansas trip. Glad you’re back in business! If you don’t mind sharing? How much did the total repair cost?

      I’m glad it was interesting even if you didn’t understand it all! I tried to keep it short and to the point lol.
      It was $19k and some change for a new engine with a whole new fuel system, new radiator, fan and misc fluids with labor 🥴

    I believe the injector causes that issue. The piston is designed and engineered the way it looks to have even combustion temperature across the the top with the injectors corresponding spray pattern. When the injector balance rate starts to get close to out of spec the fueling requirements for the affected cylinder will not be adequate across the entire rpm range of the engine on the affected cylinder and the temperature of the face of the piston will vary and you will produce hot and cold spots which usually lead to the crack.

      Valid point. But if it were that far out to make a temp difference wouldn't that show symptoms before hand?

    So did Pure Diesel just swap out a new/rebuilt motor for you? I was not sure since we got to see your old motor torn down, which was awesome to see. We dont always get the chance to see what really happened to the motor so that was a treat.

      Yeah just a new long block with a whole new fuel system. They swapped all my stuff onto a reman Jasper engine and I went ahead and had them replaced all the injectors, high pressure lines and return lines.

    • @TaltonOffroadTravel
      @TaltonOffroadTravel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn't have any blow by, but I did have some haze going on for a couple months leading up to this. I chalked it up to high elevation while being in Colorado and didn't think much of it. I should have looked into it when I noticed the change. I noticed it when it dusk and I had headlights behind me

    But how good wood the engine run with a crack in the piston the injector would need some time to put a hole in it???!!

    • @TaltonOffroadTravel
      @TaltonOffroadTravel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah the crack forms first. Then it takes a little while for the hole to get burnt thru. The crack likely wouldn’t be noticeable or cause any issues, maybe just a little blow by, if any. In my case I didn’t have any blow by. I got this motor over 240° a handful of times, plus when I first bought it I didn’t have an egt gauge and knowing what I know now I bet I was cooking that thing early on lugging it up a mountain 🥴

    1. Stop pulling and hauling that much weight long distance…..
    2. If you have to do it, don’t drive fast and stay off mountain and hilly terrain….
    3. Don’t drive long distance, pull in and stop then shut motor off, let idle for a hot minute
    4. Keep coolant and oil changed regularly
    5. Add HOWES de icer to your fuel every 2 fill ups …. Great for winter but also summer keeping injectors lunricated and clean …. I bought an 08 f250 6.4 with 100 miles in 08, traded in 2017 with 425,000 miles…. Never had any mechanical issues. Stuff works man. HOWES very underrated…… be a good sponsor to pick up

      I typically don't travel more than 5 hours in a day. I do run an additive, and change the oil regularly. I had overheating issues at one time and I'm sure that didn't help. This thing has been all around the country with this load, it was simply an unfortunate mechanical failure.
      Now I'm heading back out on the road again!
