    I met a regional sales guy for Cummins, and his company truck was a Titan XD with the Cummins 5 liter. I asked him what he thought of it, and the immediate look on his face told me everything I needed to know. His eyes held this fascinating mixture of disgust, bemusement, and more than a little shame. His gaze shifted downward. "It's a company truck." he said as a slow smile crept over his face.

      I have a standard V8 Titan bought new and love the performance but that being said… throttle body went out at 20k resulting in having to have my new truck towed. The towing was covered by Nissan and everything was taken care of with the warranty. 39k had to have engine mounts replaced which was under warranty. The dealership had mounts in stock because it’s a known issue. I baby the truck with no off-roading. Glad I bought it from a volume dealer with a lifetime power train warranty. Love the truck but will see what else comes up. Puting it out there for other owners to be aware.

      Nissan has a management team Hell bent on destroying the company. There's no other explanation. They car transmissions are crap, the cheap on everything. So the conversation with Cummins probably went something like this, build a 5.0 at half the price point you offered. I suspect a conspiracy is afoot in order to send all car manufacturing to Kissinger's Chinese factories.

      This is sad. My old 2001 250k mile, tuned,12 psi supercharged, has never been opened up or leaked a drop of oil. It's been a play toy for a very long time. When Tokyo drift came out i would watch it. Then go hit the dirt roads around the farm.Once you get sideways push in the clutch throw it in 4high and give it hell. The long arm suspension was being fully used. It was fun.
      This is my only nissan ever. I stacked the main bearings in my yota doing the say thing as my beater. I do maintain and change the oil regularly.
      I assumed they were all like my boosted beater. Sad to see they are not.

    If I ever need an engine rebuild I can’t do myself, I’d tow my vehicle 1000 miles to get it worked on at this shop. Dave, I heard the pride in your voice when you told the customer that your son would be doing the engine tear down. I’d be proud, too, if I’d had a son join me in my decades-built business. You’re doing something right, brother! 👊

    I am overwhelmed with the level of professionalism of your shop Dave. The call to the customer to keep him in the loop shows you care about him as a person. The $400 credit you are giving for the tear down speaks to your character as a business. Top notch as far as I can see. You are one of the good ones.

      I think that's pretty standard practice in the industry. You gotta commit to paying for the diagnosis but if you agree to the teardown and repair then they waive the diagnostic fee. It doesn't make good business sense to charge $5,000-$10,000 or more for an engine rebuild and then still hit them with the diagnostic fee too.

      Had a good friend get cancer after years and years of engine building. Doctors all believe it is from oils and chemicals from not wearing gloves. I’ve been wrenching for over 20 years and always wear gloves.

      Forty years ago I used to enjoy working on vehicles without gloves. Now I never do. Also, as much as possible I avoid breathing the fumes from any used automotive fluid.

    Has anyone done a ( Natural resources and pollution) study to see if the small reduction of crankcase emissions is worth all the cost of engine life expectancy? Need for a replacement vehicle or engine has to have a negative effect vs the engine/ vehicle lasting longer and not needing replacement. I bought a 2000 yr Motorhome with Cummins diesel that has no real emissions device, no def, no dpf ,no EGR 130,000 miles on it and zero issues, no fault light , absolutely nothing but regular service. I picked the older unit because I'm a Cummins certified mechanic and I knew these petty emissions rules would kill the life expectancy of the Engine, the largest most costly part of the Motorhome. Having a dependable 450 hp engine gives me piece of mind climbing Donnar Pass and other long large hills in the West. If I or anyone needs rebuild service, your top of the list. Like your professionalism and honesty.

      The crankcase fumes are the lowest hanging fruit for emissions. If you look at real old photos of highways from the '50s you'll note the black slick down the middle of each lane, that's oil from the road draft tubes on everybody's engines. Obviously most of it just dripped on the ground (bad for the groundwater, but not getting in your lungs) but there was always going to be some mist too. Fitting everything with a crankcase ventilation system cleaned the air up a lot, and only costs a few bucks per engine. So much so, that even el-cheapo mowers have a crankcase ventilation system.
      The real source of all this grief with clogged up manifolds is the EGR, or more specifically the manufacturers' choices on how to build the EGR system. The usual practice to operate an EGR system on a diesel is to set the engine up so that the turbo creates more backpressure than the engine runs boost. The excessive exhaust pressure thus forces exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold through the cooler and into the intake manifold. There are obvious issues with this approach, not only are we sending sooty exhaust into the intake but we are also subjecting the engine to more heat and stress from a restrictive exhaust. Now that everything has a DPF, there is also the option of collecting exhaust downstream of it at which point it is soot-free and won't clog the intake. Which sounds great, but there's no backpressure to force the EGR in. This problem can easily be addressed by putting a throttle valve upstream of the turbo and using it to constantly pull a mild vacuum in the intake, then the EGR gas will be sucked in along with the air, compressed by the turbo and fed to the manifold. No soot, no problems. So why don't they do it? I suspect they want to save a few bucks on the throttle valve and extra plumbing required by that system, and don't give a rat's about the effect on longevity because the engines already outlast the warranty period most of the time.
      Alternatively, you can take Scandia's approach and ditch EGR entirely. They've basically decided that it's better to accept using DEF faster and not run any EGR at all. And I'm inclined to agree. Without EGR the engine will be more efficient, have less DPF issues (the NOx produced by EGR-free combustion actually burns the soot out of the DPF!) and last longer. Which probably adds up to a net saving even though you have to fill up the DEF tank more often.

      You may call them "petty", but I remember when I was in junior high in the late '60s in Oakland CA and when the conditions were right, the air would make your eyes water and you didn't take any real deep breaths. You could not see the hills from the front of the Grand Lake Theater. While that is not a scientific study, it is no longer like that when I return to Oakland, any time of the year. Personally, if I have to trade engine life expectancy for MY life expectancy, I chose me.

      Hopefully do all of service at dealerships! Someways, dealerships make goodwill warranty( customer and dealership share to cost of repair) and I don’t think this car cover up!

      Most likely the warranty is gone … for example new gmc trucks come with 30k miles factory warranty anyone that gets a truck their not buying it to have it sit on their driveway they are putting it to work so a 30k mile warranty will be gone within a year depending on the amount of work the truck is being put

Im retired now and spend my time on a 1974 corvette that once upon a time ago was a show car im bringing it back to its once glory

    Big credit for the way you talk to the customer explaining everything in detail.
    As an engineer myself I hate workshops (especially oem dealers) not explaining to the customer- often because they don’t understand what they are doing. Often billing for unnecessary stuff.
    In case of these engine disassemblies with many work hours, you have to explain to the customer so that they see that their property is in good hands.

    As a ex carsalesman I complete understand why people have so much trust in your workshop . You show interest , explain , prepare them easy for a high bill , but compensate immediately by telling Nissan is cheaper , you tell what your next steps are . And all calm and easy . Really , I would be happy to work for you . This is top end customer satisfaction !

    Dave's initial assessment, that there was blowby, which caused the oil leak(s), then the engine was ran low/out of oil, is likely the scenario.
    As to what caused the blowby, that could have been a malfunctioning injector dumping fuel, causing a burned piston, broken compresssion rings, or other situation that started leaking compression into the crank case.
    I am an engine core buyer, to that end, I part out a lot of Cummins (Ram), Power Stroke and Duramax engines and it's almost an adventure with each engine, as the damage can be widely varied.
    Each revision of a given engine platform can have it's own unique issues, almost on a year-by-year basis.

    Lots of wiring harnesses go in these. Check the injector harness for loose pin pit. 8:48 The injectors don’t receive a good connection causing overheating. Thus, lots of separated crankshafts. Also lots of turbos, egr’s, transmissions, heater box’s…the list goes on.

    As a guy from the Columbus Indiana area - (home of Cummins) There is a reason that Cummins and Nissan dumped that 5.0L. plain and simple it's junk it was developed to quickly because of deadlines. You found the main issues - bearings and oil leaks. In my area it's a rare site to see one going down the road. Rams with a Cummins rules the road in southern Indiana in the diesel world.

    Four chains inside timing cover on that thing. One for each bank, one for fuel injection pump(mounted under the intake manifold) and one to drive the oil pump. It also has four camshafts and they are not interchangeable. Make sure you mark them so they get back in the exact same spot. Also, there is different length bolts holding the timing cover on. Don't just pull them out and throw in a bucket. Some bolts are only slightly longer than others. Draw yourself a map and mark them all so you know the exact holes they go back in. Make sure you use Alodine wipes to prep the aluminum before reinstalling. Use the correct sealant or you will be sorry. Also, there is a hole in the cast iron at the rear on the block near the turbo area, it allows for fuel&oil to drain from the valley when testing and it goes into the flexplate housing and could possibly be misdiagnosed as a rear crank seal leaking. Be careful of that. Becareful removing return fuel lines, they look like they should just pull off but they don't, force will break them. Piezoelectric Injectors too. Hydraulic pensioners on the timing gear chains that are spring loaded. Only one camshaft sensor for four camshafts. Hydraulic nonadjustable valve cross heads too (keep them in order). This is a Cummins engine with Bosch fuel system but it is unlike any other Cummins engine. Proceed with caution! God Bless.

    I've heard of several people having this issue with those trucks and both Nissan and Cummins always shrug their shoulders and leave the owner paying the bill. To me this is a Cummins problem. Nissan did not make the engine they merely bought and installed them. I used to respect Cummins as a brand but this debacle has tarnished their reputation not because it happened but because of their response- which has been nothing. Gotta be hundreds of thousands of these things driving around and they act like the engine is not their product.

    I worked as a Diesel Fitter @ coal mines in Australia. In 2011 we received the first C series V 20 Caterpillar 797 F ultra class trucks. Caterpillar put soft main bearings in the engines. Arrived @ work 1 morning, there was a 20 hour old engine sitting on the work shop floor in a cradle. There was a hole in the side of the block, about size of a mans head. Con rod made a bolt 4 freedom. Caterpillar had 2 remove engines from the whole fleet.

    Now that's a real diagnostic fee, give him credit for the $400 he's already paid into getting diagnosed. And the great thing about it, it wasn't a plug in the computer and call/we couldn't find anything; they actually did work which I really appreciate, unlike the stealerships.

    I used to work for a Nissan dealership they not only discontinued the Cummins titan but they also took all the information off the Nissan virtual academy for the Cummins engines so the newer techs couldn’t get scematics,breakdowns,or proper training to find out how they worked it was honestly horrible

    the advantage of plastic timing chain tensioners is that after a few years they soften and the cycle shifts changing and this could have initiated this failure. such parts are used now, but you can make metal ones as replacements and then some engines, because many models have them, will be really strong. It should be wanted for these what making more horsepower on such engines specifically so u will sell it and to these who knows or during repair and online as a product. Cheers. And of course here is visible lack of oil change in right time also . Maybe even first if they hear it can stand 50.000 km what is sick . From new : 5/5/10 and up to 2 years if below 10 000km each later period

    Its actually a ton of these out there for sale now. I did my homework, called cummins "contracted through nissan, we can not sale a reman etc..." nissan rep "25k for the long block, does not include EGR etc, just the long block. Also we do not install it you have to go to a disel mechanic."
    Everyone i see has a check engine light, and some janky story. Oh and they want $15,000 for it.

    I had an 07 titan gas engine do the same at 50k. Nissan eventually made right, and replaced engine. Was a big fight.

    I wanted a diesel truck for 20 years, but told myself I couldn’t afford it. Then I found one in my price range and bought it. Discovered the next day, first full day of ownership it had been wrecked, and the air filter housing had been cracked, causing it to feed dirt to the engine for a while. Didn’t expect the used car salesman to do anything for me as it expressly came with no warranty, and I did not want to put myself in a position for my anger issues to get the best of me. Also I needed a way to get to work, and I’m at work for a month at a time. So I decided to baby it along, save up my money and rebuild it. Having just got married and had a kid money was tight. It made it for 12,000 miles. Spent the last 3 years paying for the world’s heaviest paperweight I couldn’t drive because I’m a man of my word. It was a complete nightmare. I came to the realization that for 20 years I was right. I can not afford a diesel truck. 9500$ worth of parts for me to fix it. That was in 2013. I’m still driving the 1984 dodge d250 I bought for 450$ so I would have a truck. To be honest I love the atrocious gas mileage, especially pulling a trailer. I love dropping all the gears and loosing all the speed, getting passed by everyone as I pull my tractor up the hills. Because that 450$ truck has never let me down. It has driven me halfway across the country to work and back. The other beauty of it is that one of these decades when something or to be honest everything in the driveline gives up the ghost, I can replace every single component for 1500-2000$ and still make out like a bandit for my money spent. I’m talking if the engine died, ate the transmission on its way out the door, tied the driveshaft in a knot and placed it in the rear axle for it to eat somehow, the cost to fix that would be about 4 months of notes on that diesel truck that needed 9500$ worth of parts, and that’s including the initial 450$ purchase price. I wouldn’t take a diesel truck if someone were to give me one. That is a rich man’s game, and I’m not a financially rich man. Seeing this makes me feel for the guy that owns that truck, and also cements my mindset as of lately.

    For those who don’t know, this is a common issue on the 5.0 Cummins. 2016-2017 they were breaking crankshafts below 30k. Cummins identified bad cranks and redesigned it for 2018+. Then 2018+ some are spinning bearings. I had I tick down low within first 5000 miles of my truck, dealer compared it to a couple of new ones on their lot and they all had it too, said it was normal. Amsoil every 5k. Finally at 33k this happened. Another truck was in the shop with 20 something, and same thing spun bearings. Tech told me that truck was always serviced there. The tech believes the tune on the trucks is to my ch and when people get on it, it’s creating to much downward pressure on the crank making the lower bearing caps the failure point. Idk it was fixed under warranty and got rid of it.

    There were lots of problems with these. Had a cusomer buy one when they first came out. It had a catastrophic failure within 10k miles. Crank broke, Cummins was well aware of the issue. They had a bad batch of cranks, they knew down to the day what engines it affected. Nissan was willing to replace the motor but he had to fight them to replace the transmission. Debris from the engine passed through the torque converter and took out the pump.

    We cant automatically assumed is the engines fault or built.... without knowing the full service history and maintenance. My 5.0L Titan has 220K miles on it and still running strong i do change oil every 5K miles tho 🤷‍♂

    Almost bought a Titan last year, so very glad I didn't buy one... I owned 4 Nissan cars, when they were still a quality brand, a 1983 Sentra and a 1994 Sentra, plus a 1988 Z24 pickup. Drove both Sentras to 200,000 miles and needed nothing but timing belts and a clutch... but clearly those days are gone for good, sadly Nissan is a punch-line now. Owned nothing but Toyota and Lexus for 20 years.
    Can't decide who I like better on auto channels, Dave or Rainman Ray - although Ray has no TV show yet, I can watch him all day. Always knows what he is doing, never sounds a know it all tone, never loses his temper and flings a dripping wrench into the next lot over like, uh some people I know

    This is obviously a case of very little maintenance. Modern diesels need a 5k mile oil change. Nissan wont cover this under warranty, they will say this was lack of maintenance. Manufacturers will do this to get out of these huge repair jobs.

    Almost bought a 2020 titan platinum in late 2023 and walked as soon as I saw it had the 5 liter in it. So glad I did, those engines are junk

    Man…. I have a 2018 5.6L and I’m worried on the long term performance of this thing. During the 5 yr 100k warranty a bunch a stuff has been replaced but now it’s gonna be out of pocket. Love the truck but this thing faces a lot of issues. I’m at 90k and changing oil every 7.5k. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

    IN BIG TRUCKS with Cummins, they would line-bore the block, turn the crank, and put in some over-sized bearings. I don't know how many times I've seen guys try to go cheap and just put in the over-sized bearings without line-boring the block. About 5,000 miles later the crank will break and throw everything out of timing, and at least destroy the heads if not the entire engine.

    5.0L Cummins Disaster? This is an oil change disaster. And, as Dave mentioned, emissions contribute to the issue. Change your oil much sooner than a factory recommended, it's a cheap insurance.

    You guys do it right and are honest with your customers, this engine will be better built when you're done than it came from the factory! 40k miles on a diesel to spin a bearing is about as terrible as it gets. Hopefully this is not the norm for these engines.

    I've got a 2017 titan xd. I've had problems with egr, turbo actuator and lift pump. Ever since doing a def delete and fixing those things. I've got 100k miles it's been great since doing those things. I like the truck but do I think it's going to last 300k plus. NO. But I like the fact that it's a little different than a power stroke or a Duramax. It's a powerful motor and a great motor I think as long as you change oil and do maintenance with fuel system

    I've had hostler trucks with 24v 6.7L's come in for service with plugged oil filters and 2 quarts of oil that still left the shop. I've also seen the bad.

    I got rid of my diesel pickup because of emissions. Now all I have left is an old 1986 diesel tractor. IDI, mechanical injection, no computer, no EGR, no catalyst. It keeps my life simple.

    Ram has 3 years/36,000 miles with bumper-to-bumper protection and 5 years/60,000 miles with powertrain protection. But after the factory warranty is over, Ram repair costs tend to be higher than average.

    Is that the original oil that came with the vehicle? Sure looks like it. 0ver 40K miles on any motor's oil would look like that. My son and I both have 2001 Cummins diesel powered trucks. He is a construction worker who has worked in multiple states over the years. His 1 ton dually has made the half a million mile mark back in January. Mine is at 277K miles. Three things are critical for diesel motor survival. Clean air, clean fuel and clean oil.

    Upgrade to a 6.7L PSD. It's $14,000 for the engine, has more power, and a better track record. I fail to see how that 5.0 is worth more. Not sure what the Duramax costs, but it's generally a good one too.

    Emission control is necessary. Hopefully some very bright, young and up and coming engineers can solve it. Get diesels back to being reliable while minimizing emissions.

    My crank broke at 76,000. No warning. No warranty. The NHSTA opened an investigation into safety concerns. Mine failed and left me half way in a lane on I-15 couldn’t move. Not good. Love that truck too. Mine broke in June 2023 and is still sitting. 😢

    You would think that it being a Cummins, the truck would fall apart around the engine. 40k miles and it spun a bearing? Guessing it being a 18', the warranty expired for time. The only diesel I owned was a Internal 7.3L in a 1988 Ford F250 that I had in Alaska. Had over 360k miles and it ran like a top. It's no wonder Nissan stopped making these and ultimately will stop making the truck later this year.

    The emission systems is the slow tighten noose on all diesel motors. Doesn't matter if it's a Ford, Dodge, GM, CAT, etc. They don't make em like they use to. You can thank the EPA for that.

    I’d look for a junk engine and get a cap off it and line bore the block, turn the crank and you should be golden. I have seen main caps fixed that won’t fit in their register. A good machine shop should be able to advise you.

    that was the downstream side of the oil filter fabric they looked at. The paper has to be cut out, & then examine the "inside"

    A lot of these titans came with 5 year /100,000 mile warranty bumper to bumper.
    Since this was a 18 it is unfortunately out

    These are known to snap cranks too. This engine was passed on by like 3 other oems before nissan bit. It was originally a us gov DOE / cummins project.

    I’m still wondering if the excess blow by caused it to push out enough oil to where he didn’t realize he was out of oil or running low pressure and that caused the bearings to spin?

    Mine caught fire while I was driving down the road. Not a single light came on. This is gone is junk! I lost everything including my travel trailer. I will never buy another Nissan again!

    So I used to work at a chain of dealerships that had Honda Nissan and ford and when these first came out there was a customer that had bought a brand new one off the lot drove it three miles down the road to the interstate got on the interstate and the engine blew not sure what made it do that but I do know that when they pulled it apart they said something along the lines of the crank snapping in half and I think even a cam shaft I don’t really remember but I do know that the dealership literally just gave him the keys to a new one the next day or something along the lines of that
