A friend of mine was hit in the head with a brick during a mugging. He was in a coma for about a week and came around with a.different personality. The sweetest,.kindest guy was suddenly aggressive, angry and rude. It took months for his previous personality to re-emerge. When you look at the worst killers you often find traumatic head injuries in their past. Never underestimate a head injury.
he's lucky to have a friend like you who stuck around through his dark times instead of just abandoning him. wish everyone could have loyal friends like that, myself included. glad he recovered from such a heinous crime, even if partially.
Ay, my daughter is very young and is dating someone who has a TBI and I don't know him and worry about her because of how common TBI's and violence have been linked.
@@canterburytail2294 Have you told her about your worries. Maybe show her this video or something else to scare her away from him. Better to scare her than to for something to actually happen. I hope she is ok. Sometimes parents over worry so that may be the case also. I am a worry wort so no judgement.
We also have to make sure not to sensationalize head injuries as well. Not everyone that has a head injury will be a serial killer or even a bad person in general. My sister had a pretty bad head injury and she’s largely the same now. Just a few small changes.

Science still knows very little about the brain. Doctors aren't magicians mate. What was he going diagnose him with? The mri scan didn't show any physical damage to the brain. Maybe if he stayed on his meds the second doctor prescribed, it would've helped. Short of a Judge slapping Johnny with a conservatorship, what else can be done? Johnny just sounds like an asshole.
@@MrAkaacer There WAS no MRI scan, and light sensitivity is a dead giveaway to a head injury. Couple that with the odd behavior and you’ve got such an obvious head injury someone who’s NOT a doctor would know it immediately.
The strangest thing is that he left sons of anarchy because it was too violent but then became so violent in his personal life. Very scary that a brain injury can cause this.
Or if he did have schizophrenia, they usually have triggers that worsen their auditory/visual hallucinations - if he had angry voices yelling at him all the time in his head he probably wouldn't have enjoyed being around more anger, externally. One of my best friends hates clowns because one manifestation of her schizophrenia (the one that apparently bothers her the most) is a big face with exaggerated features that laughs at her at inappropriate times.
Read what happens to the singer of INXS. He had a head injury and lost his sense of smell. He was never the same after that. A blow to the brain can change a person so much. It’s crazy.

True I think in many cases. My cerebellum herniating In to my spinal cavity (chiari malformation) and I have extreme light sensitivity thst got really bad when the herniation got bigger
I have idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and I get super sensitive to light, migraines, sensitivity to sound, and I have crazy outbursts (I mean not hurting anyone. Maybe cussing someone out but who knows what it coulda led to cuz it def made me short tempered) but I def don’t act like myself… unless they do a spinal tap to remove the csf fluids. So maybe he had an overflow of fluids in his brain.

My whole life I've always known my uncle as an erratic, impulsive, and angry man easily prone to violence and making bad choices that landed him in prison. My mom told me he wasn't always like that he was a very different person before I was born, she said he was smart, kind, compassionate. Then he was t boned by a drunk driver, he survived but sustained a serious brain injury after that he was never the same. Even after he died of liver disease my heartbroken mother said "we finally put your uncle to rest, I wish you got to meet my real little brother but he died all those years ago in that car crash"

I work at a psychiatric hospital and head injuries are no joke. We have had a few that changed the person. I am very angry at the parents for not getting him care. They should have petitioned for gaudianship after the 2 arrest. There was plenty of evidence to at least get a temporary for medical intervention.

Well they were told that he didn't have a head injury and he refused to go and be checked out. I guess that they didn't know what to do. Feeling bad and awful for not realising to get her help sooner.
A friend of mine was car surfing in a park. (Stupid!) They hit a speed bump and you guessed it, he fell and landed on his head. He quit breathing 3 different times, before the teenagers called 911. They were scared to get in trouble while this poor boy is dieing. But he was saved and went through hell trying to relearn things again. He was sent to a special hospital for brain injured people. But even 14 years later. He is sooo different than he was. So sad and scarey. Cause he would physically hurt people and laugh. It was hilarious to him. He was not like that. So many changes.
Agreed! My cousin when thru 2 tbi. The 1st one was so bad it actually but chsnged the color of his hair. He was my best frirnd our whole lives and the head injury changed him so much he turned on me ehich resulted in my dog dying. Theres alot of people walking around like that and people dont realize
My daughter has TBI from a trampoline fall. Doctors refused to do any imaging at the ED and no one listen that she was "different" after this for three years. Finally I found a doctor that took my concerns seriously and tested her. November 2019, she got a tbi diagnosis. Advocate for yourselves and your loved ones!
Yes u have to unfortunately we are human in healthcare and are usually understaffed...however any fall with the slightest chance of head trauma HAS to get a CT scan to rule out a cranial bleed or hematoma it's just a given however not all professionals are professional or may be focused on less important factors...
Always do what you think is right. If you feel a doctor is not doing what they should, insist or get another opinion. Always fight for your loved ones!
This past 1.5 years have proven to me that just because someone has a medical degree doesn't make them intelligent. Too many stupid drs in the world so you have to persevere until you get an intelligent one.
My father was the sweetest and kind person, or so my mother, family and people around us said (I wasn't born yet during this period 😅). One day he got hit and run when he was just standing by the sidewalk, hence where he got his head injury and he never the same person again. He was a mess bipolar, his mood swings is so severed that once he killed our dog bare hand, causing a deep trauma to me and my older sister since we witness it. I would say it's lucky that our family survived with no harm at all from him. His manic period limited to destroying stuff (except once with the dog 😭), never violence to his own family. It was back in the 70's and we're from third world country, there's no advance medication or therapy for this kind of mental illness. Never underestimate a head injury, sometimes it caused an angel turn into a devil.

If he did sustain a tbi (traumatic brain injury) he and everyone he loved was robbed of his true loving nature and it caused sorrow for all around you. Anytime anyone really gets any type of knock/hit to the head an mri should be done but as you said, your country may not have had that available. I hope you all are doing better these days.
Honestly Head injuries are probably one of the most terrifying things- You can hit your head (like in a car accident) and your personality can completely SHIFT.
I’ve seen this happen with 4 of my closest friends one of which had a very promising career in welding, which was his favorite thing to do; even after work he’d be welding up some art or some project he wanted to do. After his head injury he decided he never wanted to weld again and now works on a charter fishing boat and hasn’t touched a welder sense, he also lost his drive to excel in life, now he just doesn’t care and rides life like a wave instead of trying to surf life which is how he lived life before! Always wear a helmet when head injuries are a factor it could save your life or your life from changing forever!!!
It wasn't a tiny head injury, he cracked the back of his head on a curb after being punched in the face. His skull was fractured and he didn't seek medical attention for 3 days. It changed him forever.
It could go the other way around. Always in trouble as a teenager... In a fight a guy broke a bat on my head. No blood on the floor, It was all on the ceiling. Became Christian after, Got married. Now I have 2 wonderful boys

Too many murders have been perpetrated by people who were supposed to be in prison but instead were let back on the streets. Nonviolent offenders should be the only prisoners afforded any leeway. Justice System seems intent on letting the most psychotic prisoners out.
Frontal lobe head injuries are now one of the leading hypothesis for serial killers. All of the major ones have a confirmed and unconfirmed head injuries.
I knew that Fred West had a brain injury (from an accident in his youth if I recall) - I wasn't aware of any confirmed or unconfirmed head injuries for any of the other major sk's that spring to mind.
Definitely an extremely exacerbating factor. Also, I've never heard of a naturally aggressive/antisocial person becoming more peaceful after a frontal lobe injury. It always seems to go the other way. I wonder if there's also a heritability to these kinds of personality changing head injuries, too. When we hear about killers and people, who have been violent from an early age (or, indeed, children who are violent and/or killers), we usually find that they've come from violent and disfunctional backgrounds. So, we have been putting the manifestations squarely at the feet or learned behavior and/or a bit of genetics. What if violent parents, generation by generation, smacking their children around is actually procuring character changing head injuries that in turn lead to the children being more violent and abusing their own children? Mostly, we raise our children to avoid drugs. We try. We rarely put any effort into raising them to avoid activities that could cause physical brain damage. In some parts of the UK - it's almost seen as a mark of parental love to give the boys mini motorbikes. Get them out banging their heads up as soon as possible.
@@batintheattic7293 I don't think so, people have been getting genital mutilated for thousands of years and yet every baby boy is still born with a foreskin and every girl is born with intact labia. there could be epigenetic changes that get passed down but likely those would be changes related to healing brain injuries which would make them less likely to get sever brain damage that won't heal. One thing that could very much get passed down is hormone levels, neurotransmitter levels, and variations in brain structure. now none of that really discounts your theory, but what does discount your theory at least to me, is that domestic violence, pedophilia, murder, serial murder, rape, and most other violent offenses are usually committed by someone who had violence or abuse done towards them in their child hood, but the important part is that this correlation is only seen in men, and women who commit violent or abusive crimes have no more or less chance than any other woman to have been abused or hurt in the past. If it was something getting passed on generation to generation why would it only ever have an effect on men when women commit almost as many violent or abusive crimes the only exception being murder. also if you look at it from an evolutionary perspective passing on chronic injuries to your children is the stupidest possible thing imaginable, sure it could be able to happen a little bit but those people who have the ability to pass on physical trauma to their children would be very quickly weeded out of the gene pool as that family would slowly degenerate over time.

After 6 diagnosed concussions over 8 years of football and dozens and dozens of un diagnosed bell ringings that I just pretended like I was ok so I didn’t miss time playing I can tell you for certain I am a completely different person after every single head trauma event. I’m still fucked up and will be for the rest of my life. I’m 27 now I stopped playing football at 19…
Johnny Lewis’s mother, recently passed from cancer sadly, is my first cousin. Her parents, Johnny’s grandparents, were my favorite Aunt and Uncle. It’s my understanding that Johnny’s father is writing a book about this. Various assertions about drug abuse and other rumors have been painful to them as I have learned from other members in the extended family. That said, I wanted to thank you personally for telling this story truthfully and while I braced myself for this story to be painful and sensationalized, you did not do that. I have been a subscriber to your channel for a while now. I love how you can tell a story and yes, I love the strange dark and mysterious. Thank you for pointing out Johnny’s goodness prior to his decline. As a relative, it can be shocking - but Johnny was famous. I am going to share this with Johnny’s first cousin (their mother’s are sisters). Hoping he feels like I do-you handled the story well. Deepest sadness for his land lady and cat and others harmed. Meanwhile, your story felt less horrifying than others that I have heard which were peppered with rumor of drugs and only focused on the horrific killing that occurred, leaving out facts and I feel your rendition is an attribute to the need for the mentally ill (be it a diagnosis, such as a schizophrenic break, or results of a head injury). Thank you and keep up the good work keeping in mind that all involved may have family members listening to you tell the story.
Deep sympathy to your family......a young man who I grew up changed drastically after a head injury caused by a motorcycle accident. The anger and nastiness he displays now is so sad, he has turned violent and aggressive to any family who have tried to help him and he wont listen. His mother is heartbroken as he acts like he hates her with such evil aggression its awful. Yet he works and functions day to day but destroys any close relationships with his anger. He just changed into a complete different person. We need more research into head injuries. I wish your family and the victims all love and peace.

One of my good friends was in a very bad motorcycle accident and ended up with two skull fractures. Before the accident he was a sweet, silly, docile guy, but after the crash he was easily irritated, and would rage fit for little, to no, reason at all. His personality completely changed. My heart breaks knowing he’s hurting like that.
That's terrifying to think that a brain injury could alter your character that much. That is just such a terrible thought and I feel so bad for him and everyone else involved.
I think it's the TYPE of brain injury plus acting plus success stress that truly caused the character change and idk if I would call his character changed so much as scrambled
Not sure if head injury did this. Schizophrenia and bipolar conditions often don't show up until adulthood. If he had taken his meds he might still be alive and so would be his victim.
My husband suffered a TBI. I barely recognized him for years. We were fortunate enough that I was able to provide him with a few years of rest (he didn’t have to work or overly stress himself) so that he was able to heal. But it’s only been the last year I have finally started to see the man I married. That means I took over three years. And I also want to note I spent time in college studying brain injuries-this is really common, and the tests don’t have ways of looking at parts of the brain that change/effect personality. It’s all very tragic and if anything, I am surprised that Johnny couldn’t find a better specialist living in Hollywood
It’s scary to me bc a lot of times the injured doesn’t notice or feel the changes everyone else is seeing so they think everyone is out to get them or crazy, and it usually takes something drastic for them to see it. I feel like he was failed by the medical and juridical system, they had many opportunities to get him diagnosed whatever the outcome was. Could’ve prevented such a tragedy.
I had a TBI when i was 16 i put my body between me and a girl sitting on the center consel and I went through the windshield of a jeep. I can definitely attest to the violent outbursts and dramatic change in personality at times these days it doesnt happen as often but sometimes the littlest things will trigger me to become violently angry ive had to learn to control it because i wasnt going back to prison for a 4th time the previous 3 definitely did nothing to help my condition other than give me a place where i didnt get in as much trouble for beating people, quite literally half to death but hey ive been managing to cope alot better these last 8 years I've been free.

My young in-law was in a bad car accident. He turned up to the house and stole some things which was out of character. He was also speaking out of character to family. He died three days later.

Head trauma has given blind people their sight back, made people play instruments, draw when they never could, do math,ECT... savants..., it's incredible. You can truly turn into someone else...and sometimes you turn into something you don't want to be. It can be a blessing or a curse...
Well, 0.01% blessing, 99.99% curse. There are a few rare cases of benefit that may or may not actually exist, and a few cases of relatively harmless things like foreign accent syndrome, it is almost always a tough and life-ruining medical problem. The idea that a head injury makes you magically play the piano, or see if blind, etc. is Hollywood fantasy.
…my brother was bless after he had westnile virus and put into a coma. He’s making a bunch of money now as a pharmacist while I’m just a loser. Must be nice to have a beneficial head injury.

I knew Cathy Davis when I was a kid. My folks are good friends with one of the people who lived at the villa from time to time and I have many very fond memories of holiday parties there. She was an incredible woman who deserved so much better.
@@user-ct1md9lw9d I don't think he's making up excuses. At least in my eyes, what Johnny did was horrifying. I think he sustained a brain injury in that accident and who he was changed. Look into frontal cortex injuries -- though I've not heard of one to cause this extreme of behavior shift that quickly, it has to be more than that, I'd think. And then when he went to the one Doctor, they didn't handle it correctly, and because Johnny was an adult, there wasn't a lot anyone could do to force him back to the Doctors. Whole thing is a series of unfortunate events. It's sad Cathy paid with her life for it, because who Johnny was died the day of the accident.
TBI (Traumatic brain injuries) are VERY closely linked to violent behavior! Poor Johnny! He wasn't supposed to be that person... The doctors could have made the correct diagnosis and potentially prevented all of this violence. May all the affected rest in peace...
He probably ended up with frontal lobe damage. The frontal lobe damage can cause change in personality, difficulty in interpreting ones environment, as well as not being able to adequately assess risks and danger. He basically lost his self control.. I wish someone was able to help him because Cathy and her cat didn’t deserve to have died.
Frontal lobe damage can result in the limbic brain (AKA The Guardienne, “automatic self,” or “adaptive unconscious”) taking over. It's capable of going through the motions of everyday life, more or less, but it has no conscience. This reminds me of the case of Phineas Gage, the railroad foreman who had an iron tamping bar blown through his brain. He lived for about 12 years afterward, but those who had been close to him said he wasn't the Phineas Gage they once knew.
the frontal lobe processes emotion. emotion does not originate from the brain. emotions are physiological. so when the frontal lobe is damaged , control of emotion is effected.

I think they were very irresponsible. Your son obviously has violent tendencies, he's clearly not in his right mind, he just got out of prison for a break in and assault, yet you think its a good idea for him to move out on his own into a house with other people??? I just don't think that was wise.
I remember my mother crying when this happened. The woman he killed was her landlord and the first friend she made when she moved to LA about forty years ago 😟

The cat part was just too much for me. Yeah it wasn't his fault because of traumatic brain injury. But I blame his family. They KNEW he had a brain injury, they KNEW he was acting strange and committing crimes. He was behaving violently. They needed to have him committed. They should have asked a judge for power of attorney. All they had to do was call 911 say he's having a mental health crisis and they'll keep him for three days and ask the doctors at the hospital to recommend they get power of attorney so he can receive further treatment. They failed their son. Just like the parents of the werewolf killer Mr.Ballen did a video on. They failed their son too. Don't fail your family members who are in mental health crisis. Call 911 get them evaluated. Please. If you choose not to do this the blo od's on your hands when something like this happens and your mentally ill loved one hurt someone.

They should have left him in jail where he couldn't hurt anyone and he would have been transferred to a mental hospital, and a judge definitely would have ordered he get inpatient treatment. They literally had to do nothing to get him treatment all they had to do was not bail him out over and over again. Man this whole situation is a tragedy. The parents had to have failed their son like ten times in a row for this tragedy to happen. And that's exactly what they did. I hope they feel guilty for it. But something tells me that their the type of people who sleep well at night and don't blame themselves at all.
@@WhitneyDahlin I would not compare this to the werewolf family. I believe his parents loved and cared for him and did what they thought was best. It is hard enough to leave your child in jail, but it was making him significantly worse. They kept trying to get him to go to more doctors to find out what was wrong with him, but he kept skipping appointments and if he did go he would not go to the follow ups. As for calling 911 to have him committed, that is often more traumatizing than it is helpful and they rarely hold you more than 24-32 hours, luckily. I think sending him back to the writer’s villa was not an irrational decision. Of course you would not believe your son would murder an old friend, especially when he has only had a few violent outbursts on strangers, not friends or family. Going to a familiar, peaceful place, where he could express his artistic passion could be thought of like a form of therapy. There are many drug rehabilitation centers similar to this. They explained the situation to Cathy before he went there and she welcomed him with open arms.
This is so sad. I’m an esthetician in Burbank and Johnny was my client while he was filming SOS. Many working actors tint their eyelashes while they are filming so they can look more natural. He came in once a month for about a year and half. He was always on time, friendly, calm and engaging to speak with. He was very excited about his daughter being born. He was always a delight to be around in my spa. We talked about all kinds of things. He loved animals. At the time, I recently rescued 2 put bulls and we probably talked about the dogs more than anything else because he was always interested in how they were doing in their rehabilitation and training. I remember our conversations like it were yesterday. I am so sorry to all involved in this mysterious tragedy. Absolutely heartbreaking.

I’ve met many celebrities being in the service industry and working in park city, some are even regulars. It’s pretty common for service industry workers, It’s not that crazy or unbelievable lol.

That irony in this story is truly heartbreaking. Johnny disliked violence to the point he needed to get off Son of Anarchy for his own good. Only to get in a motorcycle accident and end up doing the what he left the show for, except obviously for real. Head injuries are really something else.. in some stories, people turn from an average person to a genius at something. Or from a kind person into something fearsome. I find it interested, but frightening, how even a single well placed punch could change someone’s personality like that.
Yeah there was so many Victims in this story Johnny was also one of them when he had that accident he was never Johnny. If that accident never happened things could have been different.

@@jokerspudding1192 He probably hit his head so hard that it damaged his memory... and since he had worked so hard on his character and given it so much emotion... his brain grabbed onto the memory of his character and his emotion from the show. He literally became what he hated. That doesnt change that he did what he did.
After Johnny's motorcycle accident, when he was at the acting class and began speaking in a British sounding accent makes me think of Foreign Accent Syndrome. It's a real thing, very rare, and sufferers find themselves suddenly speaking in an accent completely unlike their own. It's theorized to be the result of a brain injury. If only Johnny had gone to have an MRI, like his parents had urged.
A lady I knew spoke with an Irish accent after a stroke. Not Irish, never been to Ireland..she was Australian. I also knew of a very elderly Italian woman who woke up from a stroke speaking only Spanish, for reasons no one in the family could understand. When family were doing research for a family tree they discovered that she had been born in Argentina, but her parents had returned to live in Italy when she was 2 or 3 years old.
This is why we need to make it easier to place people like this under temporary conservatorship. It's so clear as his behaviors worsen and his crimes escalate that he does not have the mental capacity to make decisions for himself until his condition is diagnosed and stabilized. There was a study that was done that found prison populations have three times higher rates of frontal lobe dysfunction than the general population, which would indicate brain dysfunction plays a big role in criminality. Forcing treatment instead of punishing through prison can help a good portion of criminals reform. The ones who can not reform and are dangerous due to severe brain disfunction or mental illness that doesn't respond to treatment should be put in some sort of permanent asylum where they can continue to try new treatments and be given some human dignity instead of being treated like a criminal who committed crimes by choice, while protecting society from them.
A relative of mine had a serious head injury, after he came out of a coma, he spoke with an English accent for a short period, he wasn't even aware of it & everyone was surprised by it since he was never around anyone with an English accent. He has become agoraphobic ever since the injury & doesn't like to stray too far from his home. Sad to see the change especially considering that he used to be an extremely outgoing, social & popular young man, animated, full of life, funny, talkative & entertaining, a dare devil who loved an audience--after the injury, he had a problem with understanding personal space or proper, censored conversation when around others which made people feel extremely uncomfortable, some individuals even threatened him physical harm & this has led unfortunately, to his isolating himself from the world, he's become quiet & reclusive & has anxiety attacks whenever he leaves his home. Brain injuries can definitely turn a person into someone entirely different.

When my brother was 13 he was hit by a car and suffered a brain injury. At first it affected his short term memory, but a month or two later he could no longer remember anything prior the accident. Not only did his behavior change but he became extremely intelligent. Yet 13 years was totally whipped out. At that time his doctors were even baffled at his condition.

I've had enough legit crazy exes of my own, and mental illness /depression myself so..😐😓 this stuff isn't unusual but a fact of life for a lot of people. Especially Hollywood weirdos. That’s how I got schizophrenia… it’s not how people imagine it at all and misunderstood and I wouldn’t believe you if you told me the things it actually does before I had it. I learned the hard way (LITERALLY 😂) (Ik my illness isn’t a laughing matter nor any illness but having good fun with small jokes is ok and that’s coming from someone with the actual illness)
I'm living proof. I don't know who I was before the car accident and traumatic brain injury that changed my life; I remember some things, though it feels like I'm watching a home movie of someone else's life. My family and friends had to get to know an entirely new person. Its disconcerting for me, probably quite eerie for them.
My sister currently has a brain injury from a car accident a few months ago. It really changed her personality and she’s still trying to figure out how to live again. It’s really scary and I can totally see how a brain injury could cause this.
I experienced a TBI from a horrible accident. I had my seatbelt on; and, the airbag deployed. But, my seat came unbolted from the floorboard. I broke my ocular bones, nose, and 4 places on the top of my skull and forehead. It took years & competent counselors; and, I am able to be me again. 🎉
Get her the very best treatment you can as soon as possible. It makes a huge difference. One thing to look into is sometimes areas that have to do with hormones get damaged so if that's the case correct treatment can start turning things around fast. I hope she is resting her brain a lot.

When you mentioned him speaking with a British accent made me think about a lady I met in a butcher shop I worked at. She was in an accident & got a head injury. After the injury she spoke with a Australian accent. She told me she had foreign accent syndrome. It usually follows a head injury.
While true, this isn't exactly the same thing. This was a singular episode apparently, where FAS is - from all the cases I've heard and read about - permanent.
Definitely a TBI. My husband suffered one when he was 26 years old. Took him 10 years to recover and he now has a degree and has very little damage left. He is one of the lucky ones.
My son had a traumatic brain injury, nearly died, was saved by emergency brain surgery to relieve previously undetected bleeding. His personality has changed in that he is more relaxed, tolerant of others, almost difficult to irritate. It is so odd. Odd but good!

My husband is a neurologist. He has completely ruined football, motorcycles, and boxing for me. I used to love it, but hearing him talk about the effects that even minor brain injuries can cause, I can't stand to watch any more.

I've had a couple myself (caught a punch to the face that knocked me out cold, fell down the stairs and slammed my head hard enough that I was bleeding out of both ears two weeks later -- really rung my bell.) After that slam into the drywall, I find i sleep a hell of a lot more, and my memory isn't nearly as sharp. Husband said it was like my CPU got a little slower.
I'm 40 now, but when I was 14 I was in a very bad car wreck. I went face first into the dash and it was an old truck with a metal dash board that didn't expect my face to well and didn't budge much at all LoL. I was the passenger obviously being 14 and we hit a dirt embankment at 70 so it was a complete and sudden stop and I had no seat belt on. I ended up passing away three times but was brought back each time again obviously because, well I hope I don't need to explain that part!! The list of broken bones and all the reconstructive surgery's I had over the next many years was all of them! That's what it seemed like any way LoL. The list was long but one of the major ones was a TBI. You have heard of that karate chop move when you upercut someone in the nose you can kill them from the nasal bone going up and stabbing the front of their brain ya? That is basically what that stupid ford truck did to me in a spectacular way. Plus all the brain swelling and the impact bouncing what little brain I had around like a ping pong ball, you could say my dome got jumped in to the TBI family like a gang member back in the day! The first year I don't remember much but after that I would get head aches that were crippling and I would have the craziest outbursts of rage and I would remember being almost like a separate person thinking why am I so mad but would not be able to stop. Physically could not stop hitting whatever triggered me at that moment. The worst was a few times just would black out from being so mad and would come to standing out in the street or someplace I had never been and had no idea were I was at or how I got there. Years and years later I still have a bit of a temper but I can control myself now and I'm lucky that something like this never took place because being on the side of what Jonny was seeing and feeling I can say that it's not something you ever want to see or go through. Terrible that he didn't get the help he needed instead of the ever so easy take these drugs and call me in the morning that doctors always prescribed then. Horrible ending on this one.
Poor guy goes from not wanting to play a violent character to being as brutal as some of the SoA characters. I believe the motorcycle crash did something to him

I agree with those who think his personality change came from a head injury. Some years ago, I guy in our church fell off a ladder and hit his head. His personality completely changed: random outbursts, anger, and / or crying. He even chased after the pastor with a metal pipe once, the police were called, and the pastor filed a restraining order against him.
A boy I went to school with suffered a head injury in auto accident. He went from being a pleasant guy to blithering idiot. I don't believe he became violent but nothing he said made any sense. He would say bizarre things like once he told my cousin that he was going down to the pond to r#pe a turtle. His mother finally placed him in an institution because she couldn't keep him home and he'd wonder about getting into trouble due to weird things he'd say.

Agree. We had a neighbor before who’s head was hit with a bat in a brutal fight with his wife. the poor guy was not the same after. He didn’t have any violent outbursts, but there are time when he is just, passive… and when he talks, he won’t even finish the sentence sometimes and doesn’t even seem to notice he stopped. Head injuries should never be taken lightly.
Sounds like the person at your church had damage to his frontal lobe, which is in charge of things like emotional regulation and impulse control. This is also the part of the brain that’s impaired and/or differently abled in people who have ADHD. I wonder if people like him would be helped from drugs/medications FOR ADHD 🤔 Saying this because I have ADHD that wasn’t diagnosed until last year, when the memory/focus impairments actually had disastrous effects on my new job. After getting on Adderall, I was surprised to find how much less emotionally reactive I am. Situations that used to make me angry are now a mild annoyance, and things that made me cry and feel like dy!ng are now a bit of a bummer. My doctor explained the emotional dysregulation that can be part of ADHD, and I had no idea. Meds like Add3rall are designed to stimulate the frontal lobe specifically, along with increasing dopamine (as ADHD generally involves very low dopamine, which is responsible for the motivation difficulties and the absurdly high rates of drug add!ction). Now, I have several extended family members who also have ADHD, which is highly heritable - HOWEVER, I was also literally dropped on my head as a baby lmao. From 6 ft up, onto concrete, smack onto the front of my head. So, I’ve always wondered if that’s part of mine. Just some thoughts! Either way, this main story and the man at your church are very sad situations 😔
I know a guy a few years back who had a very clear, undiagnosed brain injury. Genuinely the nicest guy, and stayed extremely sweet. But after the injury he had so much anger, and became fearless in a way that was extremely frightening. 80% of his personality stayed the same. But that brain injury- diagnosed or not, changed him

Johnny Lewis had several head injuries. That’s why he couldn’t stand light and the erratic behavior. Certain people thought he was abusing drugs, but he wasn’t. Even Kurt Sutter allegedly said about Johnny’s death “sad, but not surprised” . The autopsy showed no drugs. I’m sorry Cathy loss her life. I’m sorry Johnny lost his life. This was such a sad story.
Im unconvinced it was 100% for certain it was a tbi and not just coinciding with schizophrenia emerging. Remember he was reporting hearing voices and screaming and had been checked over for a tbi and the doctor seemed to think it was mental illness.

You are right, that's a good point.. however I think that antipsychotics needed to be monitored then and the doctor ignored the family and split the diagnosis between bipolar and schizophrenia, which from my perspective is negligent. Crisis prevention was completely undone, and psychosis was left untreated. I deeply blame that negligence. Just my vote..
You have no ide what Jonny said during that appointment, remember that the dr doesn't have the advantage of having all of these details. Head injuries and mental health issues can be difficult to distinguish between without a very thorough background and testing.
I suffered traumatic brain injury and I know I'm not the same. I was arrested 12 times in 2 years, never having legal trouble for 42 yrs. I'm sober for over a year and I'm constantly trying to control my parasympathetic nervous system and remind myself I'm safe and ok. It's a long road.
Try taking pressure off the brain with cranial bone adjusting (craniopathy) thru a Certified AK or SOT chiropractor. Directories thru the ICAK and SORSI, respectively. Also: Omega 3 fish oils along with phosphatidyl serine to rebuild brain cells, and curcumin to reduce inflammation (swelling) of the brain. Plus, Erchonia low level laser treatment on the brain along with doing cognitive puzzles. Also, get regular chiropractic spinal adjustments. Spinal motion, or lack of motion, also affects cranial bone motion. NEVER allow ANYONE to use a chiropractic adjusting imstrument, even a simple Activator, ANYWHERE on your head or face! Now, go, do, and get better!

What a crazy story. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about this. I was a huge fan of SoA and Half Sack was always a likable character. It’s sad that he never accepted the treatment that he obviously needed.

The fact that he was in a motorcycle accident and they didn't do a MRI on him is stupid as shit. Do a CAT and MRI to be safe, you're supposed to be making sure your patients are okay and healthy, take all the precautions just in case.

Also: how can be that someone is deemed so unhinged to be placed in a psych ward, but be judged enough aware to be able to refuse medical checkup? (Not even procedure: that is another thing). Genuine question, idk how America Health sistem works in terms of coercitive care.
There was a time in the usa when people could "get rid of" family members by having them locked up in "insane asylums". I'd have to research it more, but from casual observation it seems that history has been behind legislation that makes it very difficult to force care on someone against their will, even if they really need it. The exception being if a person is an immediate threat to themselves, in which case they can only be held for 24-48 hours depending on the county.
I adored him in Sons of Anarchy. His character was an angel amongst wolves, and to hear this was reflective of his personality in real life before the accident makes this even more heartbreaking. RIP to him and his landlord.
I think he did suffer psychological issues and imagine working n that show delving deep into a character with an unstable mentality I wonder if that caused him to lose touch a bit
Since watching TH-cam I've stumbled across a story about him once. Until I heard the full story here I hadn't any idea how sad this young actors life had turned. He was a good-looking man and a good actor and I think the system failed him because I truly believe that he sustained an injury to the head from his motorcycle accident & he was misdiagnosised. My heart goes out to his family, his friends & all who loved him. And if it weren't for MrBallen posting this video I would have continued to believe that Johnny had just lost his marbles and would have been left with the wrong impression of him. Thank you MrBallen for having the sense of mind to feel this story needed to be told. You are still saving our country from the bad things even if those bad things are bad impressions. And I'm really glad that there are others out there who feel the same way I do and aren't hating on me about either my grammar, or punctuation or just for speaking the truth. I've seen all of the videos MrBallen has posted pn TH-cam that he posted here and he has never deviated from the format he uses when making his videos. In days like these, we need to hear the truth and we need to be able to find a way to find our way back to our own Humanity even if it is through the telling of the darker side of Humanity, and MrBallen is leading the way as our "Top".

Head injuries are no joke, they can cause serious issues. The hospital should’ve kept him in for observation. There’s been cases where folk have thought they’ve been attacked, had their home broken into, think they’re talking to people in front of them when none of these things have happened, but their head injury has messed them up and they’re convince these are really happening. So if you ever hurt your head, make sure they properly check you over, because it can get worse and worse.

Mr.Ballen I've heard a story of a child who one day basically turned evil and no one could figure it out. But one Dr. did it was a tumor in his brain that put pressure on his brain causing this erratic and violent behavior. Also it's believed that those who were deemed possessed and had exorcisms might have also had similar brain tumors.
I've always wondered if some "possessed" people instead had things like; schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder, bipolar, adhd, or symptoms like mania, or psychosis from definitive physical/psych conditions.
I believe whole heartedly there was a head injury involved in his change of behavior. By best friend and I were walking through L.A. a few years ago, I ducked under the bar of some scaffolding, but because of the bill on his hat, didn't see how low it was and hit himself in the forehead pretty good. From that very moment, his mood changed. He no longer wanted to do ANYTHING, and as a normally outgoing, extrovert, he became a hermit. Entered a deep depression that took 2 years for him to get out of. And it was literally like a switch flipped, it was that sudden. And that was just from a tap to the front of the head that he was able to walk off. So I can imagine a much more severe and more permanent result being possible from more severe head trauma. Such a sad story all around.
His head might hit in the crash that way, that he lost from his brains the empathy part, while the violent part just became some how stronger with him wanting to out from no reason make violent acts.
@Ellie A eventually. It took 2 years and the help of therapy. It was crazy because he felt the immediate change too, and we would have multiple conversations about how he was cognizant of his drastic change, but was somehow powerless to change it. The self awareness actually deepened his depression because he wanted nothing more than to change back to how he was before, but couldn't figure out how, until he was finally able to due to whatever brain trauma healing, and the therapy. It was crazy to witness from a 2nd hand perspective, and I would have been super skeptical of its legitimacy had I not been there myself.
Absolutely this is TBI behavior !! He probably got more damage confronting those 2 guys also. It's not something doctors can easily see and tell you , yep 💯 you got traumatic brain injury, here's your treatment. No, it's a huge gray area with no real cure. Just like anything to do with spine damage/deterioration, nerve damage, chronic debilitating pain and autoimmune disease. we are in the dark ages for that kind of medical treatment!!

I didn’t even know this guy died….let alone murdered an old lady and her cat. Yikes! See this is why people need to take head injuries more seriously. I understand his parents tried to get a second opinion but man, what a tragedy.
The problem is, someone who's lost their capacity of self control or informed decision making can't be trusted to do what is needed to get diagnosis and treatment. It used to be easier for courts and relatives to force people into treatment facilities, but patient's rights activists went way too far in making it hard to do that. If they could have put him under a temporary conservatorship or something in response to his initial criminal charge, they could have saved lives. It's sick and sad. There was one study that found that prison populations have around three times higher occurrence of frontal lobe dysfunction than the general population. The frontal lobe mediates your decision making process, pretty much. A really famous case of frontal lobe disorder in criminality would be the Boston Strangler, a serial killer who went on to take part in a lot of research while in prison and donated his body to science. I once saw a fascinating documentary about it.
@@ANPC-pi9vu You are completely right! I fell 8 yrs ago, seen lights and stars literally, puffy face had 2 black & blue eyes as well. The hospital ER doctors sent me on my way saying I was fine🙄 The next day they called and stated that I fractured my frontal lobe. I did go to a neurologist and they clamied it will heal ok, but I also had a concussion. I never went back, because at that time I didn't have insurance and no money. Since then I've been diagnosed with Depression and Bipolar Disorder. I really think that head injury has a lot to do with my mental health! It's sad that he didn't get the right help😔 If a different doctor didn't look at my MRI or CAT scan they would've never have seen my fracture. I think due to my substance abuse history they were very biased towards me. It's like they wanted me out of the ER🤷🏻♀️ Even though I looked like I had been in a car accident or beaten up badly...
@@tiredofitall9213 I know people who have gotten into car accidents and fights and gotten diagnosed with TBI, later on they got a bipolar diagnosis as well. People who damage their brains using synthetic drugs act in a similar manner.
@@tiredofitall9213 the psychologist who diagnosed you with bipolar disorder probably made notes attributing it to a possible TBI. I work in a psych ward, when we do nursing report, they will go over each patients diagnosis ,some are unspecified meaning that we don't know yet what is going on with them until further psych observation, but they'll mention past head injuries or drugs use or whatever is helpful in understanding what could be causing their current mental crisis/behaviors

Mr Ballen: a woman AND HER CAT needlessly died. As if there weren’t any more reasons to love Mr. Ballen, he makes sure to mention the cat and the importance of his/her death as well. Poor woman and kitty 😿
I know a lady whose husband got a tbi after a vehicle accident. His personality changed to the point where she couldn't be married to him anymore, it was like he was a stranger. He couldn't be bothered with their young children anymore and the kids were now scared of him. He ended up cheating on her before she could leave him, which wasn't something that had been an issue in their marriage before. She feels more relieved than sad/hurt, because she said he's so unlike the man he used to be, that it's literally like he IS a completely different person. She said he's permanently angry, rude and even his voice sounds different. He's a recreational drug user now and has a girlfriend much younger than him. The ex-wife tries to encourage the kids to see him, and vice versa, but the kids don't want to see him and he doesn’t want to see them.
It's so frustrating when stories that end so tragically start off with a person whose mental health was so clearly obvious, yet the the ball was dropped throughout multiple incidents. Smh! My sympathy goes out to all involved.
I’ve spent time working neuropsych units. Unfortunately the tech just isn’t as advanced as we’d all like yet. If any good at all can come from situations like that poor kid went through it will be further development of diagnostics and understanding of brain injuries/mental health issues.
The fact that the the judge didn't send him to a mental institution when he wanted to represent himself? Like, did he not seem a bit off? And the fact that a man who broke into a womans apartment for unknown reasons got a reduced sentence???? Seriously scary.

A friend of mine was hit in the head with a brick during a mugging. He was in a coma for about a week and came around with a.different personality. The sweetest,.kindest guy was suddenly aggressive, angry and rude. It took months for his previous personality to re-emerge. When you look at the worst killers you often find traumatic head injuries in their past. Never underestimate a head injury.

Ay, my daughter is very young and is dating someone who has a TBI and I don't know him and worry about her because of how common TBI's and violence have been linked.

I hope she is ok. Sometimes parents over worry so that may be the case also. I am a worry wort so no judgement.
We also have to make sure not to sensationalize head injuries as well. Not everyone that has a head injury will be a serial killer or even a bad person in general. My sister had a pretty bad head injury and she’s largely the same now. Just a few small changes.

Johnny really died the day of that motorcycle accident; he was never the same after. The doctor who refused to diagnose him is incredibly incompetent.
Science still knows very little about the brain. Doctors aren't magicians mate. What was he going diagnose him with? The mri scan didn't show any physical damage to the brain. Maybe if he stayed on his meds the second doctor prescribed, it would've helped. Short of a Judge slapping Johnny with a conservatorship, what else can be done? Johnny just sounds like an asshole.
@@MrAkaacer There WAS no MRI scan, and light sensitivity is a dead giveaway to a head injury. Couple that with the odd behavior and you’ve got such an obvious head injury someone who’s NOT a doctor would know it immediately.

The strangest thing is that he left sons of anarchy because it was too violent but then became so violent in his personal life. Very scary that a brain injury can cause this.
Or if he did have schizophrenia, they usually have triggers that worsen their auditory/visual hallucinations - if he had angry voices yelling at him all the time in his head he probably wouldn't have enjoyed being around more anger, externally. One of my best friends hates clowns because one manifestation of her schizophrenia (the one that apparently bothers her the most) is a big face with exaggerated features that laughs at her at inappropriate times.
Read what happens to the singer of INXS. He had a head injury and lost his sense of smell. He was never the same after that. A blow to the brain can change a person so much. It’s crazy.

True I think in many cases. My cerebellum herniating In to my spinal cavity (chiari malformation) and I have extreme light sensitivity thst got really bad when the herniation got bigger
I have idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and I get super sensitive to light, migraines, sensitivity to sound, and I have crazy outbursts (I mean not hurting anyone. Maybe cussing someone out but who knows what it coulda led to cuz it def made me short tempered) but I def don’t act like myself… unless they do a spinal tap to remove the csf fluids. So maybe he had an overflow of fluids in his brain.

My whole life I've always known my uncle as an erratic, impulsive, and angry man easily prone to violence and making bad choices that landed him in prison. My mom told me he wasn't always like that he was a very different person before I was born, she said he was smart, kind, compassionate. Then he was t boned by a drunk driver, he survived but sustained a serious brain injury after that he was never the same. Even after he died of liver disease my heartbroken mother said "we finally put your uncle to rest, I wish you got to meet my real little brother but he died all those years ago in that car crash"

I work at a psychiatric hospital and head injuries are no joke. We have had a few that changed the person. I am very angry at the parents for not getting him care. They should have petitioned for gaudianship after the 2 arrest. There was plenty of evidence to at least get a temporary for medical intervention.

Feeling bad and awful for not realising to get her help sooner.
A friend of mine was car surfing in a park. (Stupid!) They hit a speed bump and you guessed it, he fell and landed on his head. He quit breathing 3 different times, before the teenagers called 911. They were scared to get in trouble while this poor boy is dieing. But he was saved and went through hell trying to relearn things again. He was sent to a special hospital for brain injured people. But even 14 years later. He is sooo different than he was. So sad and scarey. Cause he would physically hurt people and laugh. It was hilarious to him. He was not like that. So many changes.
Agreed! My cousin when thru 2 tbi. The 1st one was so bad it actually but chsnged the color of his hair. He was my best frirnd our whole lives and the head injury changed him so much he turned on me ehich resulted in my dog dying. Theres alot of people walking around like that and people dont realize
My daughter has TBI from a trampoline fall. Doctors refused to do any imaging at the ED and no one listen that she was "different" after this for three years. Finally I found a doctor that took my concerns seriously and tested her. November 2019, she got a tbi diagnosis. Advocate for yourselves and your loved ones!
Yes u have to unfortunately we are human in healthcare and are usually understaffed...however any fall with the slightest chance of head trauma HAS to get a CT scan to rule out a cranial bleed or hematoma it's just a given however not all professionals are professional or may be focused on less important factors...
Always do what you think is right. If you feel a doctor is not doing what they should, insist or get another opinion. Always fight for your loved ones!
This past 1.5 years have proven to me that just because someone has a medical degree doesn't make them intelligent. Too many stupid drs in the world so you have to persevere until you get an intelligent one.
My father was the sweetest and kind person, or so my mother, family and people around us said (I wasn't born yet during this period 😅). One day he got hit and run when he was just standing by the sidewalk, hence where he got his head injury and he never the same person again. He was a mess bipolar, his mood swings is so severed that once he killed our dog bare hand, causing a deep trauma to me and my older sister since we witness it. I would say it's lucky that our family survived with no harm at all from him. His manic period limited to destroying stuff (except once with the dog 😭), never violence to his own family. It was back in the 70's and we're from third world country, there's no advance medication or therapy for this kind of mental illness. Never underestimate a head injury, sometimes it caused an angel turn into a devil.

I’ve seen this happen with 4 of my closest friends one of which had a very promising career in welding, which was his favorite thing to do; even after work he’d be welding up some art or some project he wanted to do. After his head injury he decided he never wanted to weld again and now works on a charter fishing boat and hasn’t touched a welder sense, he also lost his drive to excel in life, now he just doesn’t care and rides life like a wave instead of trying to surf life which is how he lived life before! Always wear a helmet when head injuries are a factor it could save your life or your life from changing forever!!!

This story reminds me of Michael Hutchence, INXS' singer. He suffered a tiny head injury and it changed him so much, he ended up taking his own life.
I watched a documentary about him. It was so sad what happened to him. He ended up hanging himself. He was such a talented young man.

Frontal lobe head injuries are now one of the leading hypothesis for serial killers. All of the major ones have a confirmed and unconfirmed head injuries.
I knew that Fred West had a brain injury (from an accident in his youth if I recall) - I wasn't aware of any confirmed or unconfirmed head injuries for any of the other major sk's that spring to mind.

Definitely an extremely exacerbating factor. Also, I've never heard of a naturally aggressive/antisocial person becoming more peaceful after a frontal lobe injury. It always seems to go the other way.
I wonder if there's also a heritability to these kinds of personality changing head injuries, too. When we hear about killers and people, who have been violent from an early age (or, indeed, children who are violent and/or killers), we usually find that they've come from violent and disfunctional backgrounds. So, we have been putting the manifestations squarely at the feet or learned behavior and/or a bit of genetics. What if violent parents, generation by generation, smacking their children around is actually procuring character changing head injuries that in turn lead to the children being more violent and abusing their own children?
Mostly, we raise our children to avoid drugs. We try. We rarely put any effort into raising them to avoid activities that could cause physical brain damage. In some parts of the UK - it's almost seen as a mark of parental love to give the boys mini motorbikes. Get them out banging their heads up as soon as possible.

One thing that could very much get passed down is hormone levels, neurotransmitter levels, and variations in brain structure.
now none of that really discounts your theory, but what does discount your theory at least to me, is that domestic violence, pedophilia, murder, serial murder, rape, and most other violent offenses are usually committed by someone who had violence or abuse done towards them in their child hood, but the important part is that this correlation is only seen in men, and women who commit violent or abusive crimes have no more or less chance than any other woman to have been abused or hurt in the past. If it was something getting passed on generation to generation why would it only ever have an effect on men when women commit almost as many violent or abusive crimes the only exception being murder.
also if you look at it from an evolutionary perspective passing on chronic injuries to your children is the stupidest possible thing imaginable, sure it could be able to happen a little bit but those people who have the ability to pass on physical trauma to their children would be very quickly weeded out of the gene pool as that family would slowly degenerate over time.

After 6 diagnosed concussions over 8 years of football and dozens and dozens of un diagnosed bell ringings that I just pretended like I was ok so I didn’t miss time playing I can tell you for certain I am a completely different person after every single head trauma event. I’m still fucked up and will be for the rest of my life. I’m 27 now I stopped playing football at 19…

Johnny Lewis’s mother, recently passed from cancer sadly, is my first cousin. Her parents, Johnny’s grandparents, were my favorite Aunt and Uncle. It’s my understanding that Johnny’s father is writing a book about this. Various assertions about drug abuse and other rumors have been painful to them as I have learned from other members in the extended family. That said, I wanted to thank you personally for telling this story truthfully and while I braced myself for this story to be painful and sensationalized, you did not do that. I have been a subscriber to your channel for a while now. I love how you can tell a story and yes, I love the strange dark and mysterious. Thank you for pointing out Johnny’s goodness prior to his decline. As a relative, it can be shocking - but Johnny was famous. I am going to share this with Johnny’s first cousin (their mother’s are sisters). Hoping he feels like I do-you handled the story well. Deepest sadness for his land lady and cat and others harmed. Meanwhile, your story felt less horrifying than others that I have heard which were peppered with rumor of drugs and only focused on the horrific killing that occurred, leaving out facts and I feel your rendition is an attribute to the need for the mentally ill (be it a diagnosis, such as a schizophrenic break, or results of a head injury). Thank you and keep up the good work keeping in mind that all involved may have family members listening to you tell the story.
Deep sympathy to your family......a young man who I grew up changed drastically after a head injury caused by a motorcycle accident. The anger and nastiness he displays now is so sad, he has turned violent and aggressive to any family who have tried to help him and he wont listen. His mother is heartbroken as he acts like he hates her with such evil aggression its awful. Yet he works and functions day to day but destroys any close relationships with his anger. He just changed into a complete different person. We need more research into head injuries. I wish your family and the victims all love and peace.

One of my good friends was in a very bad motorcycle accident and ended up with two skull fractures.
Before the accident he was a sweet, silly, docile guy, but after the crash he was easily irritated, and would rage fit for little, to no, reason at all. His personality completely changed.
My heart breaks knowing he’s hurting like that.

That's terrifying to think that a brain injury could alter your character that much. That is just such a terrible thought and I feel so bad for him and everyone else involved.
I think it's the TYPE of brain injury plus acting plus success stress that truly caused the character change and idk if I would call his character changed so much as scrambled
Not sure if head injury did this. Schizophrenia and bipolar conditions often don't show up until adulthood. If he had taken his meds he might still be alive and so would be his victim.
My husband suffered a TBI. I barely recognized him for years. We were fortunate enough that I was able to provide him with a few years of rest (he didn’t have to work or overly stress himself) so that he was able to heal. But it’s only been the last year I have finally started to see the man I married. That means I took over three years. And I also want to note I spent time in college studying brain injuries-this is really common, and the tests don’t have ways of looking at parts of the brain that change/effect personality. It’s all very tragic and if anything, I am surprised that Johnny couldn’t find a better specialist living in Hollywood
It’s scary to me bc a lot of times the injured doesn’t notice or feel the changes everyone else is seeing so they think everyone is out to get them or crazy, and it usually takes something drastic for them to see it. I feel like he was failed by the medical and juridical system, they had many opportunities to get him diagnosed whatever the outcome was. Could’ve prevented such a tragedy.

I had a TBI when i was 16 i put my body between me and a girl sitting on the center consel and I went through the windshield of a jeep. I can definitely attest to the violent outbursts and dramatic change in personality at times these days it doesnt happen as often but sometimes the littlest things will trigger me to become violently angry ive had to learn to control it because i wasnt going back to prison for a 4th time the previous 3 definitely did nothing to help my condition other than give me a place where i didnt get in as much trouble for beating people, quite literally half to death but hey ive been managing to cope alot better these last 8 years I've been free.

My young in-law was in a bad car accident. He turned up to the house and stole some things which was out of character. He was also speaking out of character to family.
He died three days later.
After his accident, the light sensitivity, to the extreme in his case- is a dead giveaway of a head injury.

Head trauma has given blind people their sight back, made people play instruments, draw when they never could, do math,ECT... savants..., it's incredible. You can truly turn into someone else...and sometimes you turn into something you don't want to be. It can be a blessing or a curse...
Well, 0.01% blessing, 99.99% curse. There are a few rare cases of benefit that may or may not actually exist, and a few cases of relatively harmless things like foreign accent syndrome, it is almost always a tough and life-ruining medical problem. The idea that a head injury makes you magically play the piano, or see if blind, etc. is Hollywood fantasy.

I knew Cathy Davis when I was a kid. My folks are good friends with one of the people who lived at the villa from time to time and I have many very fond memories of holiday parties there. She was an incredible woman who deserved so much better.

Johnny died the day of his motorcycle accident. After that it was a different person.

@@user-ct1md9lw9d I don't think he's making up excuses. At least in my eyes, what Johnny did was horrifying. I think he sustained a brain injury in that accident and who he was changed. Look into frontal cortex injuries -- though I've not heard of one to cause this extreme of behavior shift that quickly, it has to be more than that, I'd think. And then when he went to the one Doctor, they didn't handle it correctly, and because Johnny was an adult, there wasn't a lot anyone could do to force him back to the Doctors. Whole thing is a series of unfortunate events. It's sad Cathy paid with her life for it, because who Johnny was died the day of the accident.

TBI (Traumatic brain injuries) are VERY closely linked to violent behavior! Poor Johnny! He wasn't supposed to be that person... The doctors could have made the correct diagnosis and potentially prevented all of this violence. May all the affected rest in peace...
He probably ended up with frontal lobe damage. The frontal lobe damage can cause change in personality, difficulty in interpreting ones environment, as well as not being able to adequately assess risks and danger. He basically lost his self control.. I wish someone was able to help him because Cathy and her cat didn’t deserve to have died.
Frontal lobe damage can result in the limbic brain (AKA The Guardienne, “automatic self,” or “adaptive unconscious”) taking over. It's capable of going through the motions of everyday life, more or less, but it has no conscience. This reminds me of the case of Phineas Gage, the railroad foreman who had an iron tamping bar blown through his brain. He lived for about 12 years afterward, but those who had been close to him said he wasn't the Phineas Gage they once knew.

the frontal lobe processes emotion. emotion does not originate from the brain. emotions are physiological. so when the frontal lobe is damaged , control of emotion is effected.
This has a slow build up, and a wild ending that happens suddenly without much warning.

The cat part was just too much for me. Yeah it wasn't his fault because of traumatic brain injury. But I blame his family. They KNEW he had a brain injury, they KNEW he was acting strange and committing crimes. He was behaving violently. They needed to have him committed. They should have asked a judge for power of attorney. All they had to do was call 911 say he's having a mental health crisis and they'll keep him for three days and ask the doctors at the hospital to recommend they get power of attorney so he can receive further treatment. They failed their son. Just like the parents of the werewolf killer Mr.Ballen did a video on. They failed their son too. Don't fail your family members who are in mental health crisis. Call 911 get them evaluated. Please. If you choose not to do this the blo od's on your hands when something like this happens and your mentally ill loved one hurt someone.

They should have left him in jail where he couldn't hurt anyone and he would have been transferred to a mental hospital, and a judge definitely would have ordered he get inpatient treatment. They literally had to do nothing to get him treatment all they had to do was not bail him out over and over again. Man this whole situation is a tragedy. The parents had to have failed their son like ten times in a row for this tragedy to happen. And that's exactly what they did. I hope they feel guilty for it. But something tells me that their the type of people who sleep well at night and don't blame themselves at all.

It is hard enough to leave your child in jail, but it was making him significantly worse. They kept trying to get him to go to more doctors to find out what was wrong with him, but he kept skipping appointments and if he did go he would not go to the follow ups. As for calling 911 to have him committed, that is often more traumatizing than it is helpful and they rarely hold you more than 24-32 hours, luckily. I think sending him back to the writer’s villa was not an irrational decision. Of course you would not believe your son would murder an old friend, especially when he has only had a few violent outbursts on strangers, not friends or family. Going to a familiar, peaceful place, where he could express his artistic passion could be thought of like a form of therapy. There are many drug rehabilitation centers similar to this. They explained the situation to Cathy before he went there and she welcomed him with open arms.

This is so sad. I’m an esthetician in Burbank and Johnny was my client while he was filming SOS. Many working actors tint their eyelashes while they are filming so they can look more natural. He came in once a month for about a year and half. He was always on time, friendly, calm and engaging to speak with. He was very excited about his daughter being born. He was always a delight to be around in my spa. We talked about all kinds of things.
He loved animals. At the time, I recently rescued 2 put bulls and we probably talked about the dogs more than anything else because he was always interested in how they were doing in their rehabilitation and training. I remember our conversations like it were yesterday.
I am so sorry to all involved in this mysterious tragedy. Absolutely heartbreaking.

That irony in this story is truly heartbreaking. Johnny disliked violence to the point he needed to get off Son of Anarchy for his own good. Only to get in a motorcycle accident and end up doing the what he left the show for, except obviously for real.
Head injuries are really something else.. in some stories, people turn from an average person to a genius at something. Or from a kind person into something fearsome. I find it interested, but frightening, how even a single well placed punch could change someone’s personality like that.

After Johnny's motorcycle accident, when he was at the acting class and began speaking in a British sounding accent makes me think of Foreign Accent Syndrome. It's a real thing, very rare, and sufferers find themselves suddenly speaking in an accent completely unlike their own. It's theorized to be the result of a brain injury. If only Johnny had gone to have an MRI, like his parents had urged.
A lady I knew spoke with an Irish accent after a stroke. Not Irish, never been to Ireland..she was Australian. I also knew of a very elderly Italian woman who woke up from a stroke speaking only Spanish, for reasons no one in the family could understand. When family were doing research for a family tree they discovered that she had been born in Argentina, but her parents had returned to live in Italy when she was 2 or 3 years old.
This is why we need to make it easier to place people like this under temporary conservatorship. It's so clear as his behaviors worsen and his crimes escalate that he does not have the mental capacity to make decisions for himself until his condition is diagnosed and stabilized.
There was a study that was done that found prison populations have three times higher rates of frontal lobe dysfunction than the general population, which would indicate brain dysfunction plays a big role in criminality. Forcing treatment instead of punishing through prison can help a good portion of criminals reform. The ones who can not reform and are dangerous due to severe brain disfunction or mental illness that doesn't respond to treatment should be put in some sort of permanent asylum where they can continue to try new treatments and be given some human dignity instead of being treated like a criminal who committed crimes by choice, while protecting society from them.

A relative of mine had a serious head injury, after he came out of a coma, he spoke with an English accent for a short period, he wasn't even aware of it & everyone was surprised by it since he was never around anyone with an English accent. He has become agoraphobic ever since the injury & doesn't like to stray too far from his home. Sad to see the change especially considering that he used to be an extremely outgoing, social & popular young man, animated, full of life, funny, talkative & entertaining, a dare devil who loved an audience--after the injury, he had a problem with understanding personal space or proper, censored conversation when around others which made people feel extremely uncomfortable, some individuals even threatened him physical harm & this has led unfortunately, to his isolating himself from the world, he's become quiet & reclusive & has anxiety attacks whenever he leaves his home. Brain injuries can definitely turn a person into someone entirely different.

When my brother was 13 he was hit by a car and suffered a brain injury. At first it affected his short term memory, but a month or two later he could no longer remember anything prior the accident. Not only did his behavior change but he became extremely intelligent. Yet 13 years was totally whipped out. At that time his doctors were even baffled at his condition.

I don't know who I was before the car accident and traumatic brain injury that changed my life; I remember some things, though it feels like I'm watching a home movie of someone else's life. My family and friends had to get to know an entirely new person. Its disconcerting for me, probably quite eerie for them.
My sister currently has a brain injury from a car accident a few months ago. It really changed her personality and she’s still trying to figure out how to live again. It’s really scary and I can totally see how a brain injury could cause this.
I experienced a TBI from a horrible accident. I had my seatbelt on; and, the airbag deployed. But, my seat came unbolted from the floorboard. I broke my ocular bones, nose, and 4 places on the top of my skull and forehead. It took years & competent counselors; and, I am able to be me again. 🎉
Get her the very best treatment you can as soon as possible. It makes a huge difference. One thing to look into is sometimes areas that have to do with hormones get damaged so if that's the case correct treatment can start turning things around fast. I hope she is resting her brain a lot.

When you mentioned him speaking with a British accent made me think about a lady I met in a butcher shop I worked at. She was in an accident & got a head injury. After the injury she spoke with a Australian accent. She told me she had foreign accent syndrome. It usually follows a head injury.

While true, this isn't exactly the same thing. This was a singular episode apparently, where FAS is - from all the cases I've heard and read about - permanent.

Definitely a TBI. My husband suffered one when he was 26 years old. Took him 10 years to recover and he now has a degree and has very little damage left. He is one of the lucky ones.

My son had a traumatic brain injury, nearly died, was saved by emergency brain surgery to relieve previously undetected bleeding. His personality has changed in that he is more relaxed, tolerant of others, almost difficult to irritate. It is so odd. Odd but good!

My husband is a neurologist. He has completely ruined football, motorcycles, and boxing for me. I used to love it, but hearing him talk about the effects that even minor brain injuries can cause, I can't stand to watch any more.

After that slam into the drywall, I find i sleep a hell of a lot more, and my memory isn't nearly as sharp. Husband said it was like my CPU got a little slower.

I'm 40 now, but when I was 14 I was in a very bad car wreck. I went face first into the dash and it was an old truck with a metal dash board that didn't expect my face to well and didn't budge much at all LoL. I was the passenger obviously being 14 and we hit a dirt embankment at 70 so it was a complete and sudden stop and I had no seat belt on.
I ended up passing away three times but was brought back each time again obviously because, well I hope I don't need to explain that part!! The list of broken bones and all the reconstructive surgery's I had over the next many years was all of them! That's what it seemed like any way LoL. The list was long but one of the major ones was a TBI. You have heard of that karate chop move when you upercut someone in the nose you can kill them from the nasal bone going up and stabbing the front of their brain ya? That is basically what that stupid ford truck did to me in a spectacular way. Plus all the brain swelling and the impact bouncing what little brain I had around like a ping pong ball, you could say my dome got jumped in to the TBI family like a gang member back in the day! The first year I don't remember much but after that I would get head aches that were crippling and I would have the craziest outbursts of rage and I would remember being almost like a separate person thinking why am I so mad but would not be able to stop. Physically could not stop hitting whatever triggered me at that moment. The worst was a few times just would black out from being so mad and would come to standing out in the street or someplace I had never been and had no idea were I was at or how I got there. Years and years later I still have a bit of a temper but I can control myself now and I'm lucky that something like this never took place because being on the side of what Jonny was seeing and feeling I can say that it's not something you ever want to see or go through. Terrible that he didn't get the help he needed instead of the ever so easy take these drugs and call me in the morning that doctors always prescribed then. Horrible ending on this one.
Poor guy goes from not wanting to play a violent character to being as brutal as some of the SoA characters. I believe the motorcycle crash did something to him

I agree with those who think his personality change came from a head injury. Some years ago, I guy in our church fell off a ladder and hit his head. His personality completely changed: random outbursts, anger, and / or crying. He even chased after the pastor with a metal pipe once, the police were called, and the pastor filed a restraining order against him.
A boy I went to school with suffered a head injury in auto accident. He went from being a pleasant guy to blithering idiot. I don't believe he became violent but nothing he said made any sense. He would say bizarre things like once he told my cousin that he was going down to the pond to r#pe a turtle. His mother finally placed him in an institution because she couldn't keep him home and he'd wonder about getting into trouble due to weird things he'd say.
the fact that the personality change came right after the accident is what makes it sound like a brain injury. It would be a big coincidence if a mental illness came on at the exact same time.
Agree. We had a neighbor before who’s head was hit with a bat in a brutal fight with his wife. the poor guy was not the same after. He didn’t have any violent outbursts, but there are time when he is just, passive… and when he talks, he won’t even finish the sentence sometimes and doesn’t even seem to notice he stopped. Head injuries should never be taken lightly.

Sounds like the person at your church had damage to his frontal lobe, which is in charge of things like emotional regulation and impulse control. This is also the part of the brain that’s impaired and/or differently abled in people who have ADHD.
I wonder if people like him would be helped from drugs/medications FOR ADHD 🤔 Saying this because I have ADHD that wasn’t diagnosed until last year, when the memory/focus impairments actually had disastrous effects on my new job. After getting on Adderall, I was surprised to find how much less emotionally reactive I am. Situations that used to make me angry are now a mild annoyance, and things that made me cry and feel like dy!ng are now a bit of a bummer. My doctor explained the emotional dysregulation that can be part of ADHD, and I had no idea. Meds like Add3rall are designed to stimulate the frontal lobe specifically, along with increasing dopamine (as ADHD generally involves very low dopamine, which is responsible for the motivation difficulties and the absurdly high rates of drug add!ction).
Now, I have several extended family members who also have ADHD, which is highly heritable - HOWEVER, I was also literally dropped on my head as a baby lmao. From 6 ft up, onto concrete, smack onto the front of my head. So, I’ve always wondered if that’s part of mine.

I know a guy a few years back who had a very clear, undiagnosed brain injury. Genuinely the nicest guy, and stayed extremely sweet. But after the injury he had so much anger, and became fearless in a way that was extremely frightening.
80% of his personality stayed the same. But that brain injury- diagnosed or not, changed him

Johnny Lewis had several head injuries. That’s why he couldn’t stand light and the erratic behavior. Certain people thought he was abusing drugs, but he wasn’t. Even Kurt Sutter allegedly said about Johnny’s death “sad, but not surprised” . The autopsy showed no drugs. I’m sorry Cathy loss her life. I’m sorry Johnny lost his life. This was such a sad story.

The doctor who ignored the head injury, has a lot to live with.
Im unconvinced it was 100% for certain it was a tbi and not just coinciding with schizophrenia emerging.
Remember he was reporting hearing voices and screaming and had been checked over for a tbi and the doctor seemed to think it was mental illness.

You are right, that's a good point.. however I think that antipsychotics needed to be monitored then and the doctor ignored the family and split the diagnosis between bipolar and schizophrenia, which from my perspective is negligent. Crisis prevention was completely undone, and psychosis was left untreated. I deeply blame that negligence. Just my vote..

You have no ide what Jonny said during that appointment, remember that the dr doesn't have the advantage of having all of these details. Head injuries and mental health issues can be difficult to distinguish between without a very thorough background and testing.
I suffered traumatic brain injury and I know I'm not the same. I was arrested 12 times in 2 years, never having legal trouble for 42 yrs. I'm sober for over a year and I'm constantly trying to control my parasympathetic nervous system and remind myself I'm safe and ok. It's a long road.
Try taking pressure off the brain with cranial bone adjusting (craniopathy) thru a Certified AK or SOT chiropractor. Directories thru the ICAK and SORSI, respectively.
Also: Omega 3 fish oils along with phosphatidyl serine to rebuild brain cells, and curcumin to reduce inflammation (swelling) of the brain.
Plus, Erchonia low level laser treatment on the brain along with doing cognitive puzzles.
Also, get regular chiropractic spinal adjustments. Spinal motion, or lack of motion, also affects cranial bone motion.
NEVER allow ANYONE to use a chiropractic adjusting imstrument, even a simple Activator, ANYWHERE on your head or face!

The fact that he was in a motorcycle accident and they didn't do a MRI on him is stupid as shit. Do a CAT and MRI to be safe, you're supposed to be making sure your patients are okay and healthy, take all the precautions just in case.

How can that doctor """not suspect""" a head injury when he checked literally every box for one on the frontal lobe???
Also: how can be that someone is deemed so unhinged to be placed in a psych ward, but be judged enough aware to be able to refuse medical checkup? (Not even procedure: that is another thing). Genuine question, idk how America Health sistem works in terms of coercitive care.
There was a time in the usa when people could "get rid of" family members by having them locked up in "insane asylums". I'd have to research it more, but from casual observation it seems that history has been behind legislation that makes it very difficult to force care on someone against their will, even if they really need it. The exception being if a person is an immediate threat to themselves, in which case they can only be held for 24-48 hours depending on the county.
The US 'Healthcare' system is worthless as a second world country. EVERYTHING about it sucks.

Since watching TH-cam I've stumbled across a story about him once. Until I heard the full story here I hadn't any idea how sad this young actors life had turned. He was a good-looking man and a good actor and I think the system failed him because I truly believe that he sustained an injury to the head from his motorcycle accident & he was misdiagnosised. My heart goes out to his family, his friends & all who loved him. And if it weren't for MrBallen posting this video I would have continued to believe that Johnny had just lost his marbles and would have been left with the wrong impression of him. Thank you MrBallen for having the sense of mind to feel this story needed to be told. You are still saving our country from the bad things even if those bad things are bad impressions. Keep up the fantastic job you're doing.

Head injuries are no joke, they can cause serious issues. The hospital should’ve kept him in for observation. There’s been cases where folk have thought they’ve been attacked, had their home broken into, think they’re talking to people in front of them when none of these things have happened, but their head injury has messed them up and they’re convince these are really happening. So if you ever hurt your head, make sure they properly check you over, because it can get worse and worse.

It’s recommended if you sustain a hit to the head that knocks you out, even for a short time, you should get a ct scan to rule out a bleed.

Mr.Ballen I've heard a story of a child who one day basically turned evil and no one could figure it out. But one Dr. did it was a tumor in his brain that put pressure on his brain causing this erratic and violent behavior. Also it's believed that those who were deemed possessed and had exorcisms might have also had similar brain tumors.

I've always wondered if some "possessed" people instead had things like; schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder, bipolar, adhd, or symptoms like mania, or psychosis from definitive physical/psych conditions.
I believe whole heartedly there was a head injury involved in his change of behavior. By best friend and I were walking through L.A. a few years ago, I ducked under the bar of some scaffolding, but because of the bill on his hat, didn't see how low it was and hit himself in the forehead pretty good. From that very moment, his mood changed. He no longer wanted to do ANYTHING, and as a normally outgoing, extrovert, he became a hermit. Entered a deep depression that took 2 years for him to get out of. And it was literally like a switch flipped, it was that sudden. And that was just from a tap to the front of the head that he was able to walk off. So I can imagine a much more severe and more permanent result being possible from more severe head trauma. Such a sad story all around.
His head might hit in the crash that way, that he lost from his brains the empathy part, while the violent part just became some how stronger with him wanting to out from no reason make violent acts.
@Ellie A eventually. It took 2 years and the help of therapy. It was crazy because he felt the immediate change too, and we would have multiple conversations about how he was cognizant of his drastic change, but was somehow powerless to change it. The self awareness actually deepened his depression because he wanted nothing more than to change back to how he was before, but couldn't figure out how, until he was finally able to due to whatever brain trauma healing, and the therapy. It was crazy to witness from a 2nd hand perspective, and I would have been super skeptical of its legitimacy had I not been there myself.
Absolutely this is TBI behavior !! He probably got more damage confronting those 2 guys also. It's not something doctors can easily see and tell you , yep 💯 you got traumatic brain injury, here's your treatment. No, it's a huge gray area with no real cure. Just like anything to do with spine damage/deterioration, nerve damage, chronic debilitating pain and autoimmune disease. we are in the dark ages for that kind of medical treatment!!

I didn’t even know this guy died….let alone murdered an old lady and her cat. Yikes! See this is why people need to take head injuries more seriously. I understand his parents tried to get a second opinion but man, what a tragedy.
The problem is, someone who's lost their capacity of self control or informed decision making can't be trusted to do what is needed to get diagnosis and treatment. It used to be easier for courts and relatives to force people into treatment facilities, but patient's rights activists went way too far in making it hard to do that. If they could have put him under a temporary conservatorship or something in response to his initial criminal charge, they could have saved lives. It's sick and sad. There was one study that found that prison populations have around three times higher occurrence of frontal lobe dysfunction than the general population. The frontal lobe mediates your decision making process, pretty much. A really famous case of frontal lobe disorder in criminality would be the Boston Strangler, a serial killer who went on to take part in a lot of research while in prison and donated his body to science. I once saw a fascinating documentary about it.

The next day they called and stated that I fractured my frontal lobe. I did go to a neurologist and they clamied it will heal ok, but I also had a concussion. I never went back, because at that time I didn't have insurance and no money.
Since then I've been diagnosed with Depression and Bipolar Disorder. I really think that head injury has a lot to do with my mental health! It's sad that he didn't get the right help😔 If a different doctor didn't look at my MRI or CAT scan they would've never have seen my fracture. I think due to my substance abuse history they were very biased towards me. It's like they wanted me out of the ER🤷🏻♀️ Even though I looked like I had been in a car accident or beaten up badly...
@@tiredofitall9213 I know people who have gotten into car accidents and fights and gotten diagnosed with TBI, later on they got a bipolar diagnosis as well. People who damage their brains using synthetic drugs act in a similar manner.
@@tiredofitall9213 the psychologist who diagnosed you with bipolar disorder probably made notes attributing it to a possible TBI. I work in a psych ward, when we do nursing report, they will go over each patients diagnosis ,some are unspecified meaning that we don't know yet what is going on with them until further psych observation, but they'll mention past head injuries or drugs use or whatever is helpful in understanding what could be causing their current mental crisis/behaviors

I know a lady whose husband got a tbi after a vehicle accident. His personality changed to the point where she couldn't be married to him anymore, it was like he was a stranger. He couldn't be bothered with their young children anymore and the kids were now scared of him. He ended up cheating on her before she could leave him, which wasn't something that had been an issue in their marriage before. She feels more relieved than sad/hurt, because she said he's so unlike the man he used to be, that it's literally like he IS a completely different person. She said he's permanently angry, rude and even his voice sounds different. He's a recreational drug user now and has a girlfriend much younger than him. The ex-wife tries to encourage the kids to see him, and vice versa, but the kids don't want to see him and he doesn’t want to see them.
It's so frustrating when stories that end so tragically start off with a person whose mental health was so clearly obvious, yet the the ball was dropped throughout multiple incidents. Smh! My sympathy goes out to all involved.
I’ve spent time working neuropsych units. Unfortunately the tech just isn’t as advanced as we’d all like yet. If any good at all can come from situations like that poor kid went through it will be further development of diagnostics and understanding of brain injuries/mental health issues.

The fact that the the judge didn't send him to a mental institution when he wanted to represent himself? Like, did he not seem a bit off? And the fact that a man who broke into a womans apartment for unknown reasons got a reduced sentence???? Seriously scary.
The judge could have had him do his sentence in a mental hospital, they are at the end of the day who decides where when and how.
