There’s also a lesson here for employers. NO employee, especially a young girl, should be left alone at your shop, and again, especially at night. I worked at a small garden center for years, and the owner insisted that at least two or more employees worked the shift and closed together. If a second employee was not available, he worked the shift himself with the other person. And no one, male or female, was allowed to walk to their car alone.

There is a self defense rule that says to NEVER allow yourself to be taken to a second location. If you get killed for not cooperating, that sucks but something much worse was awaiting you. Run, fight, yell, whatever but do not cooperate with someone trying to abduct you. There absolutely IS such a thing as fates worse than death. The security camera was focused on the employee. That tells me that the only thing that owner cared about was if the employees were stealing.

    • @HumanPerson_final
      @HumanPerson_final 3 ปีที่แล้ว +278

This is pretty unfair. It's just a practical thing to worry about. Over 30% of retail theft is employee shrink. If you have a store where employees are left alone with *your* money for long periods of time, it is foolish to not have a camera present to keep an eye on your money and store. As we saw with this video, pointing a camera at the cash box can help (in theory) if the store gets robbed. They evidently had a camera facing the parking lot outside the coffee shop, as they could see this monster load her into a white pickup truck.
Plus, from how the story was explained here, unless it was just a coincidental timing, it sounds like the owner didn't even immediately report the robbery. It wasn't until police called the store owner that the owner reported their employee vanished and the money was gone. The logical assumption the store owner would have is the employee robbed them before quitting the job and running.

If the alarm went off, they would call one of the managers to go check it out. This happened twice to my wife during her time with Home Depot. Both times I went with her despite my having to work in the morning. If I hadn't gone, she would've been alone checking on the alarm. @@angelfinley6244it regards to the camera quality.... tbh it's EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE to run HD, just 720-1080p security cameras and storage for say just 1 week, let alone more. It's a tough cost for small businesses (but even some big companies do this, which is a shame), and especially for low crime areas. I'm not sure of Anchorages crime rates, but I'm guessing it's not insane, but who knows...that winter environment is rough on people. I suggest more and better placement for those small businesses just trying to make it.
LEO have pretty sophisticated technology to be able upscale the quality(Hollywood grade to above Hollywood grade tech...and some of the greatest at doing this kind of stuff), then also a lot of other evidence of similar cases across the country to create a trail.. to still get a match if some of the face is shown...if his face was so covered up, not much anyone can do except use info from this catch, run it through advanced national databases at the FBI to find similar cases as a lot of serial killers do things one way over another...a little thing such as telling if the guy is left handed can eliminate millions of suspects...then maybe his/her tying/roping technique could trim it to thousands and so on. They also have extremely talented people who can cut the list down shorter to maybe hundreds, then other processes from there.
It's a long process unfortunately, but it's either low unemployment/small businesses/etc.. and higher suicide rates, more crime, etc from low unemployment. It's a trade off.
Large enterprises should have higher standards, but MOST serial killer have thought their methods through so even the best security cameras resolution can be nulled by just putting on a Hoodia, a hate pushed down low, keeping head down, and add in the fact the people who do this know where the cameras are unless hidden well, means they can be identifiable even with say 1080p to higher resolutions.
a lot of these small businesses are REQUIRED by their insurance company to have these, so even though insurance companies are trashy a lot, they really put in good measures using scientific data and actuarial science for their security to get business insurance policies (becausethey really do want to keep people safe because if not then they are dulling out large sums to incidents like these to the small business, which is bad for insurance companies. They have minimum requirements, so most businesses go with limited just because the cost of running a business is high itself...otherwise, we'd look worse than the coronavirus shutdown where stores are closing left and right duets high overhead...leading to more unemployment, gdp, suicides, mental health (which can lead to being a guy like keyes), etc...

Remember people, NEVER let yourself be taken to a secondary location. If you are the victim of a crime the likelihood of your survival plummets if they take you somewhere else. So it's worth fighting like hell when they try because more often than not you're going to die anyways.
Edit: I want to be clear I'm not victim blaming in any way. She acted in the way she believed would preserve her life. Beyond that there is no "right answer" anyone who tells you there is one is arrogant or ignorant.
My statement is for those finding themselves in similar unfortunate situations. I want to inform people so they can make a good decision on what has a better chance of creating the outcome they want.
And that information is that you have an equal chance of dying after being kidnapped as you do if you resist being kidnapped in the first place.

Now if she was still alive when he went out to matanuska lake, that’d be a different story. Sadly she was dismembered and placed into a frozen lake in pieces. They finally retrieved her body April 2nd. Her dad to this day still hasn’t recovered from losing his daughter. He “died” that day they found her. I worked at a bar and grill and was closing 3 times a week alone. It was scary in general, but then I had a wake up call closing. I found myself alone with only the bar lights on with an intoxicated male patron who didn't want to be cut off and was also way too interested😢. He was also bringing up his interests in weapons and such. Its hard to describe but there was all sorts of red flags about the guy, what he said and his mannerisms, in addition to being alone which he was also very aware of, and I felt like... prey. I was nervously moving things around looking like im working and I sent a quick sneaky text that I had a SOS situation to a coworker who lived on the same road and thankfully they came right away and got the guy out of there. He may have not had a bad bone in his body, but I listened to the hair raising feeling that it was not a good situation. I told the owner the next day no more of that and he was pretty annoyed with me that I wouldn't close alone anymore and wasn't able to handle the situation.

Besides, even if the Second Amendment means what we would like it to mean, it wouldn't be much use against the invisible and distant forces that render our freedoms impotent. @@hllyenaylleth9576 I have had interractions with two noticeably evil people, both of whom turned up in the news about a year later. One appeared opaque and dead in the eyes and tried to cheat me out of money; he was later arrested and convicted for killing and robbing a local prominent businessman who used to be a late-night fixture on local television commercials. The other appeared intensely evil - sort of the opposite of the "deadness" of the first guy. A neighbor got a gun and I called the police, but the guy disappeared before the police arrived; the guy turned up on the news a year later for silently strangling a woman on a city bus (they were the only two passengers).
I would not call the forces "distant and invisible," though. One can reasonably deduce that they do buy gas, interract with people, and even buy gas.

      That's not even remotely true.
      - Male seals have been known to rape (this includes young offspring)
      - As someone mentioned, male dolphins do this too and gang rape the females
      - Apes have also been known to sexually assault
      - Male lions will kill their sons to take out competition for potential mates (apparently the lionesses find this arousing)
      - Mother pandas will kill their kid if they can't take care of all of them (same for Tasmanian devils and certain birds)
      - Killer Whales will sometimes just kill for sport
      - Clown fish will change their sex and mate with their son if the situation arises
      - Found this online "In Tasmanian Devil mating season, the male has to beat the female into submission. If he fails, the female beats the male up"
      - Tiger sharks eat each other in the womb
      - Male Otters are necrophiliacs
      - Wallabies discard their joeys if they are being chased
      - Female penguins steal babies while male penguins will rape them
      - Black widows and female preying mantis will eat their mate after sex
      - Domestic male cats have a hooked penis that hurts the female cat which hurts her but also triggers ovulation
      Those are just a few.

I no longer flinch when I see violence, my first reaction is to jump into the action. People that freeze do so because they've never experienced any high stress situations. You don't need a plan, you just resist as hard as you can, even if you're weak. Never let them take you back to their little fucking torture dungeon. No, people are telling those that don't know, you don't go to a second location. Ever.
You fight with your life. That's in law enforcement recommendations about the issue as well.
You fight. Not because you're a bad ass but because you need to.
Two people have responded with stories in this chain where they didn't react at all or reacted poorly and had to depend on someone else reacting.
Don't be that person. Whether or not it's human, whether or not it's excusable.

There's a few books on Israel Keyes. I read the one entitled "American Predator" over a year ago. I vaguely remember the book, but I thought I'd list some things that stood out in my mind:
    1. When Keyes abducted Samantha in her pickup, they were at a stoplight and a cop car pulled up to the right of the pickup. Samantha could see the car outside her window. Samantha did nothing. Samantha had several opportunities to escape but she never took them.
    2. Samantha never tried to escape b/c Keyes was a master manipulator. He learned that he could lie to his victims telling them that he was simply going to kidnap them in exchange for money and no one will get hurt as long as the victim cooperates.
    3. Keyes would have sex with Samantha's body after he killed her. And, he would do it to the corpses of many of his victims.
    4. Keyes had a very sharp mind, and was a "student" of serial killing. He read many books on serial killers and would tell cops of how past serial killers made mistakes.
    5. Keyes could build his own guns, and build his own house. He was sort of an evil genius. So good was skill that the ATF were impressed with the guns that he built. (I don't really understand this passage of the book. I can't believe someone could actually build their own guns. I think the book meant that he can assemble parts into a gun. I usually take "build" to mean starting with raw materials like metal ore, you can craft an item.)
    6. Keyes knew how to build and repair houses, every aspect from the carpentry, plumbing, to the electricity. And he used that skill to his advantage. He could glance at a house and have a good idea where to break in. And he also good at figuring out where security cams would be placed and what they could see. So he could be seen in old videos of just skirting around the coverage areas.
    7. Keyes was a meticulous planner. He would plan his crimes months or years in advance even if the crime was literally on the other coast of America. He would drive coast-to-coast just to canvas and plan a kill.
    8. I was struck just how driven Keyes was. He could probably go a couple of weeks without sleep. (The book never explicitly states it, but you get this consistent picture that Keyes was a composed, controlled, but an utmost maniac.)
    9. It's strongly suspected that several uncaught serial killers who have mysteriously "retired" might actually be Keyes.
    10. His wife and daughter never suspected he was a serial killer. He would literally travel for hours away from his house, kill someone, then return back for dinner.
    11. Keyes genuinely loved his wife and child. One of the reason why Keyes is not more widely known is that he bargained with law enforcement. Keyes would confess to whatever the cops wanted in exchange for his crimes not to be leaked out to the press. He was genuinely concerned what the impact on the news would do on his daughter.
    12. Keyes had sisters who he cared for deeply too. And Keyes would raise his younger sisters, caring for them like a mom would.
    13. Yet, Keyes showed the classic serial killer symptoms as a child: animal torture, graduating to stalking people, etc...
    14. Keyes parents were domineering Christians. Keyes would rarely talk about his parents, but he had alot of rage against them and it was clear (even if Keyes never admitted to it) that he and his sisters were severely abused.
    15. Not surprisingly, Keyes was also hated Christianity.
    16. I have this feeling that Keyes was driven primarily by a rage against his parents and his religion. Christianity has a way of tampering down urges at the expense of 'supernova' rage later in life. It certainly is the case with Keyes.
    17. I'm not trying to sympathize with Keyes, but in a more caring environment, I feel like Keyes could have turned out to be brilliant genius, given how he could figure things out quickly and just how glaringly driven his mind was.
    18. Despite how strong Keyes mind was, I was surprised how easily he confessed to his crimes during interrogations. I feel like he wanted someone to brag about how smart he was. During parts of the interview, it definitely felt like Keyes took pride in how well he planned his kills
    19. Boredom comes up alot in the book, and you get this feeling that there is a part of Keyes subconscious screaming, "Do anything! Just anything! Just don't make me bored!!"
    20. Keyes never confessed to sexually assaulting men, but he did confess to planning to do so. The author slightly hints that Keyes may be bisexual.
    21. As much as Keyes was proud of how he planned his killings, his killings appeared to disturb him, as if he was really guilty for doing them.
    22. When talking about his killings, his body would start to tremor.
    23. Keyes last few murders were not as well thought out. That is how they caught him. I read this as, the chase and the kill were not equivalent to him as far as being exciting and satisfying his urges.
    24. Therefore, I have a feeling if he were never caught, the urge to kill might eventually fade.
    25. Just like other serial killers who live double lives, Keyes was quiet, and kep to himself. However he was a model father. And, he was a responsible, and diligent worker.
    26. However, there were a few incidents where his clients were scared crap-less when they saw a look in Keyes eyes suggesting he was planning to kill them.
That's it, off the top of my head. Mr Ballen can probably do 2-3 years worth of episodes based solely on Israel Keyes Again, if you are into this stuff, read "American Predator" . The book starts with a tense narrative about how they were able to hunt down Keyes. The rest of the book is primarily based on Keye's confessions transcripts and it covers his other murders and his up bringing, and also a few times that the law enforcers could have botched the investigation and set Keyes free.
Finally, I want to end stating that the final days before Keyes was caught was far more intense than described by Mr Ballen. The law knew that their perp was in Texas by tracing a bank withdrawal from the victim's bank card. A local officer who was part of the search team knew the roads around the atm. He knew that there were only a few ways any motorist would want to go, and by a hunch he took a road that the perp would likely be on. Time was critical here, because as more time passes, the possible places the perp could be grows exponentially. So they had to act and search quick.
On another hunch the officer pulled into a motel off the road he thought the perp would be, to see if the perp may have checked into the motel. Driving through the parking lot, he spotted a white vehicle with Alaskan plates. They ran the numbers, it was from the city that they believed the perp lived in.
If I recall correctly, the girl was already dead, so there was no rush in busting into the perp (Keyes) room to rescue the girl. Instead, they staked out his car and when Keyes went to it, dozens of officers jumped out and nabbed him.

@Sour Lemon I didn’t know Samantha, my son did. People started calling me, asking if she was a relative or if I knew her. Of course with the number of calls I began to field, my son’s friendship, and my expanding awareness of the incident, it did, in a very real way, become personal, but nothing like the loss of her family, her everything.

Never ever go with someone to a secluded spot, even if they have a gun or knife. If you fight scream, etc., they will probably shoot you, but there’s a possibility of being found before you bleed to death. The minute you get in their vehicle...you’re without any hope of help. We had a woman get abducted right out of our parking lot, she just quietly went with the guy because he had a knife. There were other people around, who would have at least looked if she’d started screaming. They found her in the river a week later. The cops came and told us to fight for our lives if the guy came up on us, because each time they found a victim, it was worse. Don’t know if they ever got the guy, or if he just moved on. What one detective said has stuck with me for 30 years. “Fight like your life depends on it - because it does. Fight dirty, claw, bite, scratch, do anything you can to make him decide he wants someone else.”

@@janicesullivan8942 me too. I told them even if one of them was taken and the abductor threatened to kill their sibling if they didn't get in the car. The best thing they could do for their sibling is to escape with a description of the car and person.

if it's possible, just aim for the eyes. if you have sharp nails, even better. crushing someone's eyes in self defense isn't something I'd feel bad about tbh and it's more effective

Absolutely because wherever they take you has been chosen specifically because it will give them easier control over you and therefore decreases your chances of escaping unharmed even more. It seems counter-intuitive if there's a gun pointed at you but it's never ever worth the risk.

If you’ve never seen the interviews of Israel Keyes.... that is really a flip of the script. He’s so completely nonchalant and in love with himself. It’s so gross. Crazy bastard.
