    - Eliminate distractions: avoid anything that distracts your focus (i.e. your phone)
    - Biological peak time: find when you have the most energy in the day in order to get your greatest potential (for me, I have the greatest potential at 4.00 am to 7.00 am. So I think I should sleep during 9.00 pm to 4.00 am or 5.00 am and do my task)
    - tasks difficulty level: focus on the task that just over your skill a little bit
    - Focus on specific task: list the clear goal (i.e. you need to do a project, don’t set an unclear goal like “I will finish this thing in 3 days” just set a goal like “I will finish the research and the question part in this day and tomorrow I will finish the data gathering and analysis part and next day I will finish the presentation slide and prepare my presentation”)

      As someone with Ne dom (meaning I have so many ideas flowing that I can’t focus on one task at a time- which is both good and bad depending on the context but definitely a negative for a strict academic environment), this is probably the only way I’ve found to completely emerge myself in a task .

    As someone with ADHD, I hit this pretty easily when I'm left to my own devices at work. To the point where I sometimes get frustrated that people can't do the same, which I understand isn't fair. Blocking time out was a big one for me, and setting a timer with that so that I don't keep going past and miss slacks or emails was a big help.

    I have adhd and I get into a state called hyper focus when I do something I’m very excited about, which is pretty much the same as flow except that once you are done with it you feel very sad, tired and hopeless

    • @RoundedWaffle
      @RoundedWaffle ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also have ADHD and I think you're projecting with that last bit
      Why would you feel hopeless after going into hyper focus? That's not a natural part of it, is there shame around your adhd that could be surfacing?

    • @tnijoo5109
      @tnijoo5109 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@RoundedWaffle another ADHD person here. I think maybe it’s the drop off of dopamine after you finish something you’ve been manic about. Also, the shame aspect you mentioned probably plays a huge part always lurking in the subconscious to sabotage the reward system. Maybe shame is what keeps us from having the normal reward system working in our brains that normal people have. And it’s this loop because we’re always ashamed of the problems we have from ADHD.
      For me, after I accomplish something I usually never feel good. I feel like shit that I didn’t get it done sooner or crappy that it took up so much time and I still have so much more to do. I rarely feel like I did well doing it because I know a normal person would have done the task much better in far less time. Sucks.
      The one exception was when I used to go into a sort of manic state and get a month worth of stuff done in like two or three days and feel like I was taking over the world. I was medicated for a long time for that and now off those meds I don’t have those times anymore.

    • @RoundedWaffle
      @RoundedWaffle ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tnijo O very interesting. To elaborate I've felt shamed by say a girlfriend for hyper focusing on my music rather than her, which kind of made me stop being productive on all fronts
      And I think something interesting to be said that regularly people feel "accomplished" when finishing something and adhd folk only feel "relief" at best
      But all of the other things you're stressing about are more anxiety based than ADHD based I believe, if you can narrow down the things you worry about and have empathy and patience for your own brain the dread and stuff doesn't have to be a part of it
      I promise

    Also, a helpful thing to do is start studying in bursts of really short times (for me what works is like, 5 minutes) and keep repeating the timer (take breaks every x runs depending on your time period. For me it's 1 min:5 mins of break:work). There'll be a point where you're at the middle of something or the timer becomes more of a disturbance than a tool, and that's when you switch it off and deep dive ig.
    I've tried this for a really short time (so idk if this is long term) but it's worked better than most other stuff to get into flow because of the break:work ratio thing (which gives you incentive to max out on work so that your break will be more substantial but also gives you a tiny reward at the end of each piece of work ig).
    In my experience I'll hit flow in about 20 mins - 30 mins depending on how much I want to do the thing. Soo, if anyone wants to try this out lmk how it goes for you?

      @@kalleskit Hey dude, np! Glad it helped. I have procrastination issues as well and since I can't plan for shit (pardon my language) it's more helpful to make a before session workflow or something (for me currently since I've just started it's outcome, expected time frame, and how I'm going to gauge my progress). Planning the thing this way feeds into doing the actual thing which is hella helpful if you choose to try it out. It also prevents you from being too much of a perfectionist since you have an expected outcome and measure of progress to ensure you don't overdo it.
      E.g. for Maths it'd be like:
      - Outcome: Understand inverse functions
      - Time: 1 hour
      - Progress measure: 10 sums and how much I get right out of that or something along those lines
      Hope this helps as well, dude! I've been struggling with procrastination and I've only recently (like legit in the last week) figured out stuff that works for me, so lmk if it works for you as well?

    I think this is why I get school work done mostly on weekends when I can manage my own time, get enough sleep, and can chose my environment.
    Having to go from class to class every day just makes it hard to do much. I think it is why I end up staying up late to get work done. You can stay up for hours and easily get an uninterrupted chunk of time to work. However, you also go to bed at 3am and are then absolutely miserable every day when you wake up.
    While I can trigger this flow state pretty easily (depends on what I have to do though), it doesn’t save me time because I’m forced to live on other peoples’ schedules. The asynchronous way is the best way.

    I noticed I was actually using your flow state methods at home without knowing it after watching this video. I often wondered why I wrote amazing papers or could conduct hours of research when I had alcohol (whiskey) and had lofi playing in the background. I was able to achieve a feat I've never done before and graduated my MA program with a 4.0. I would spend my weekdays researching topics and categorizing the information into sections where they could be useful. Then on the weekends I would isolate myself to my computer room, down almost an entire bottle of whiskey over the 2 days, and play lofi music the entire time as I entered this trance like zone of creativity and focus. Now that I am free of homework and writing papers, I hardly drink anymore and kind of lost my ability to focus. I'll have to check out more videos like this to see what I can do to induce that state of focus and calm I had during my college years. My triggers for flow are messed up bro haha. I definitely don't want to become an alcoholic or take some medication to reach that type of high level of focus again.

    • @HassanAhmed-rf9xr

The sleep disorder makes you dumb and tired all day until later in the evening you come alive and turn into a genius. It’s like your body and mind are on two different circadian rhythms. The only way to fix it is to get up at the crack of dawn and get outside and exercise, to reset the circadian rhythms all together with the light. Ironically, the people that would be hardest for are the ones with the disorder. I did finally do it, by some amazing miracle, and it was good for a while until a tragedy occurred and I got all off my perfect sleep cycle and now I’m trying to get back into it. The severe sleep inertia most of the morning and afternoon is awful. I don’t think people without sleep disorders can understand how daunting everything in life is when you’re dealing with stuff like this. I’ll remember what it’s called later and try to come back here. If I were going to name it, I would call it “your whole life is f*cked and you’ll never function in society” sleep disorder, but that name is so long. But, no- you can overcome it or just build your life around the schedule. The difference from the disorder to being a night owl is that you’re like a total zombie most of the day and then come alive. I think I've already been doing this. I think of my life as going from Alpha to Omega - where Alpha is doing nothing whatsoever (relaxing) and Omega is complete focus on a given task. The problem for me is that I have terrible time-management because I assume I can just switch to Omega mode and stay there indefinitely. It's exhausting and unsustainable.

    I've been there. Used to be close to it, quite a bit, actually. But, sometimes, on rare occasions, I do things like read several books of the Bible in a few hours, while taking breaks to clean the kitchen in spurts, in a very detailed manner. And, that is a time when no one else is around and I have nothing else that I need to do.

    I see a lot of people here who say they have ADHD and have trouble focusing.
    To all of you I suggest to buy ear plugs. Try to put them in for maybe 10 or 20 minutes per day. Don't do anything, maybe breathing excersie or walk around outside, maybe cook a meal, something simple.
    This should help you get a little more control over it and also be more calm when you use it. At least it helped me along my journey.

    The hard part is that my internal drive to be in flow state with my distractions is too strong. That dopamine pull keeps me in a flow state with the distractions making it harder to eliminate them. Controlling dopamine is the key to flow state I feel.

    I like the advice. We do really use only 10% of our brain, even bible states it. The rise of short term content because if this stinky TikTok, definitely triggered the short attention span, and less concentration. Even I noticed it after myself, when spent too much time on reels. Atomic habits also stated that motivation is not really a thing, it’s what surrounds us make a cue for action. If you see a candy, but don’t want it, you still gonna eat it. It’s just there, and you brains react to it. Same thing with a flow, no distraction means inner peace and consistent work. I’ve tried it, eliminated all distractions, sleep schedule is on point, I see progress. Great video 👍🏻

    Use binaural beats, it's like a way to get yourself into the flow state A LOT more easily!
    I've used it a million times, and it works!
    You don't distract yourself with other sounds if you can only hear the beats.
    Less distraction-> more focus.
    Binaural beats also activate the "Alpha state" which is a super learning state of mind.
    So if you have an exam, youtube search "90 mins study session."

    Adhd off medication here, I find flow when it hits 10pm, and everyone is asleep, I go into this state where I absorb info and make connections between unconnected things. Sadly I've been working literally everyday and unable to stay up past 8pm, so now I hit a 50% flow at work, which is nice since I've made leaps in terms of progress in getting seen as a responsible and trustworthy employee, (I just turned 21) so if you made this far, thanks

    I usually go into the flow as soon as I get home. I get dressed and work immediately on what I need to get done, cuz I know the moment I get in that bed and "rest for a bit" I'm never getting up again. I think it's easier cuz my brain would say "I'll just do this one thing until I feel tired and then go eat dinner so I could relax and continue the rest later"

    1:27 is my local skatepark in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, Chernaya Rechka metro station
    Why am i pointed out this?
    This is the first place where I learned what is flow
    Bcz I’m a professional scooter/skateboard rider, I know that without flow any extreme sports is impossible
    So to get to this state u have a special thing named “warm up” or “раскатка” in Russian
    And yes, u need to spend time(about 1 hour) and a lot of energy till u get only to normal condition of ur riding ability,and if u want progress everyday, u have to ride minimum 5-6 hours a day, and that’s not a joke
    So the same thing I think with every art/science/sport type of
    Idk useless comment, but still…..

    The unfair thing is you as a man can easily find out your biological peak time because your hormone cycle is 24 hours long, so resets each day.
    For women it is harder, because our hormone cycle is somewhere between 25 to 35 days. On different phases (menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulation phase, and luteal phase) of the cycle our peak is different. We have our peak on the follicular and ovulation phases and our lows on luteal and menstrual phases. As you can see, our biological peak is in days not hours.
