In this video, you’ll learn one trick that could make you more successful than 99% of people. It's not what you think. And even if you nail it, it won't necessarily make you happy. So enjoy the Red Bull, pizza, and... cocaine? No, don't enjoy the cocaine. Just the pizza.

I totally agree - Great thinking - Great video! But I think the real question should be how to get ahead of 80% of people. Because the benefit of achieving this level of success would lead to greater opportunities, recognition, and personal satisfaction that most people can only dream about. I would love to watch a video from you about this! 😊

Like Lazarus before me, I question this. It's stock-standard knowledge for things like sudden fortune or fame. (The economic, psychology & even health outcomes stats for lottery winners 5 years after is really depressing.) However, it does _not_ apply to hard fought knowledge, expertise, wealth, or relationships. This is _particularly_ true in cases of struggling (eg economically).
Working and becoming more successful in academics didn't make me "more" depressed. It _fixed_ my anxiety at initial bad marks and thus cut my depression off at the source. Likewise going from below the poverty line to a successful job doesn't make someone _more_ stressed about their finances. They may eventually develop new stressors due to an adjusted definition of success. However, it's nearly guaranteed that a way to fix many mental health disorders in the US would be better education and more opportunities for those of low SES.
"More of myself" is only half the story.

@@lazarussevy2777 dude, that's what he said. If the heat in hot water is amplified, it becomes vapour. He didn't say they'll be the same. He said they'll be an amplified version of themselves.
That's why if someone gets rich and seems to have changed, then there was probably a part of that person you didn't know before that got amplified.
      Dunno if this makes sense.

One thing to remember: Money. A lot of the so-called "geniuses" we worship today were born into wealth, and to a degree, were able to fail upwards. Also, a lot of people in history who we know today, truly lived as mavericks and went against the flow, and were deeply insightful and/or talented. But they died "failures" because the rest of society weren't ready to embrace those ideas at the time.

There's so much good music out there that nobody's heard of or will ever hear. So yes, you need a good song but more importantly you need people to hear it if you want to be a successful artist - and that takes some serious hard work.

    Lessons:
    1. Be willing to do what most people are not: To get ahead of 99% of people, you need to be willing to do something that 99% of people are not willing to do. This means going against the norm and being a contrarian.
    2. Have a contrarian idea: Most people go with the flow and agree with popular opinions. To achieve extreme success, you need to have a contrarian idea, something that challenges widely-held assumptions and beliefs.
    3. Be correct about your idea: It's not enough to have a contrarian idea; you need to be correct about it. Most contrarian ideas will be wrong, so being right is a difficult but crucial aspect of achieving success.
    4. Execute massively: Execution is important, but it is not the sole determinant of success. While it is necessary to put in the work, execution alone is not sufficient. It's the combination of having a correct contrarian idea and executing on it that leads to extreme success.
    4. Question widely-held assumptions: Success often comes from questioning widely-accepted beliefs and exploring alternative opportunities that others might overlook. It requires adopting unpopular beliefs and sticking to them even in the face of criticism.
    5. Focus on impactful decisions: Extreme success is not the result of numerous small actions or productivity hacks. It often boils down to a few key decisions or ideas that have a significant impact. Identifying and executing on these impactful decisions is crucial.
    6. Downsides of extreme success: The downsides of achieving extreme success. Being a contrarian can lead to isolation and disapproval from others. It challenges the notion that extreme success brings validation and approval, as it often invites criticism and skepticism.

For quite a long time I've been going throughout "self improvement". Imade tidy schedule, did those good habits & other stuff, yet I didn't really feel like becoming a much greater person. Watching this, I realized the reason I didnt feel that way is my identity. I subconsciously brand myself as "someone who need self improvement". Turns out what I need is to execute massively my what I want to do, even if I am not regulated to "strict & tidy 24/7 daily habits"

I have been following you for a long time and read your first book years ago.So i am wondering if the reason you became successful was your prediction that digital marketing would explode and then betting on that by blogging and then writing a book?Or did you start blogging cause you just liked blogging for whatever other reason and then data and feedback helped you intuit that writing a self help book for millennials can make you big money? Also i am not a millenial.I am 47.Love your content!

i am commenting from my mom's account:
i have a personal small scale example of this
it was our chemistry lab period and the teacher was going through the steps of the reaction, she thought i was being disrespectful by saying i don't need to write it down to learn it,(contrarian idea).
but after the teacher finished the steps i told the entire reaction word by word(correct contrarian idea + execution)
now i just sit around and do stretches in my lab period and the teacher does not ask me a whole lot of questions
    🙃

😆😆 Yeah, thanks for taking the time to leave your deeply insightful comments and then give each other high-fives, like a group of sigma men sitting in a bar after going through your 9-5 job, b*tching about everything, and then someone at the table (🙋 me, in case you need an explanation) breaks the mood and says something contrarian and you all go: "he can't be serious", "he's being sarcastic, right?", "It's a joke, right?" and so on. LIKE I SAID, it's not for everybody. 😆👍 Chill out and keep at it. Hence the proportion is 99-1. You've been made.

I'd guess none of those contrarian ideas came about while people were sitting around trying to think of contrarian ideas. They came upon an idea while experiencing life that they had a lot of belief and conviction in that happened to be contrarian and they went for it. We hear the handful of success stories while the rest get lost into the dark hole of history.
Your overall message was spot on--If you can't be happy right now, you can't be happy tomorrow. You become happy when you realize you already can be happy this very moment if you choose to be, and start living accordingly.

Getting underneath the rug with the mainstream productivity messages we hear too much about. Love this take.
And contrarain when you think about it, just means betting on yourself. Going after a low success probability outcome.
But as Mark correctly said, if you can't not imagine the pursuit then it's for you. Then the probabilities go up.
    Thanks again Mark.

In which case you cannot love the success, because you WON'T GET IT - or you should treat it like you won't. You should love the process. For it is IMPOSSIBLE To have that idea without a helluvalot of luck ... so the joy must be in the process of pursuing a contrarian idea even though you know almost surely you will be one of the embarrassing kooks. Salute to the kooks of the world! They had the right mindset, just the wrong idea. Thanks Archie Plutonium from 20 years ago :) You may not have had a magic plutonium atom at the center of your brain fixed there giving you ideas instead of radiation but you had the right mindset by harboring that crazy idea and being doggedly committed to it.
So maybe that IS the point ... you fundamentally CAN'T chase this kind of success. But **NOT** because of some trivial bullshit about "other people" (it's easy to blow them off if you've been mocked enough and have to adapt) but because of the fundamental hard laws of knowledge, talent, genius and luck and chance. And THAT IS THE POINT.

    Key points from this video:
0:00 - If you want to be ahead of 99% of people in the world, you have to do what 99% of people aren't willing to do.
1:17 - To be successful, productivity hacks, morning routines, etc. don’t matter.
1:31 - Mark used to wake up late (11am), eat unhealthy, and waste time on his laptop (for 3 years), but still built a 6-figure business.
2:28 - To be successful, you have to:
    1. have a contrarian (unpopular) idea
    2. be correct about that idea
    3. execute on it massively
3:27 - We tend to focus on #3 (execution/routines/etc.) because it’s easy to observe and replicate.
3:50 - Steve Job’s contrarian idea = One day, computers will be in every home and office.
4:47 - Warren Buffet ate unhealthy food.
5:15 - Kobe Bryant ate unhealthy food.
6:10 - At some point in the past airplanes, light bulbs, and computers were some people’s contrarian ideas.
9:00 - The downside of success: no one likes contrarians.
9:56 - Success is only meaningful if your contrarian idea is meaningful.
10:02 - Success only improves relationships that don't need to be improved.
10:19 - To be correctly contrarian, you have to be incorrectly contrarian a lot.
10:50 - Extreme success is not going to make you happy.
11:30 - You should ask yourself why you want to be more successful than 99% of people.
Interesting take on success - or should I say "contrarian" take on success. Thanks, Mark! Sounds reasonable and logical, but I do wish we had some data/evidence beyond just Mark's personal anecdote and the few examples provided (Steve Job, Warren Buffett, etc.).

Number 1 and Number 2 are so important. Without them we are merely spinning our wheel. I always knew I lacked imagination to come up with the contrarian idea that could be made to work. And this has always been ignored by those who claim they can set you on your way. I think the small successes I have had have been based on not doing what everyone else is trying. This explains a lot. Thanks.

What a breath of fresh air to hear you speak this way. I see your book at the airport all the time but never thought to buy it. Maybe I will next time 🤷‍♂️.
In reality though it isn’t hard to get ahead of most people. I don’t know about 99 percent but if you just do your job without complaining you’ll be ahead of most and get noticed, if you go the extra mile and do more than you’re asked to well then you’ll be ahead of close to 90 %. Napoleon Hill may have said that but it is true it’s unbelievable how little work most people want to.
I worked for a small construction company out of high school cleaning up his yard. He was away and I just did what he asked me to, was a little nervous I wasn’t working fast enough. Turns out he tore a strip off all the older workers later for all the work I got done and offered me a full time job.
