    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    En route to her judgment before the royal court, the Queen (Ana Torrent) stops to reprimand the Boleyn girls for their deceit and ambition.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Adapted from author Philippa Gregory's historical novel of the same name, director Justin Chadwick's atmospheric period drama follows the fierce competition between sisters Mary (Scarlett Johansson) and Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman) to win the affections of Tudor king Henry VIII (Eric Bana). Anne and Mary Boleyn are under pressure from their father and uncle to help maintain the family's rich legacy and ensure their further prosperity by winning the affections of none other than the king of England (Eric Bana). But life in the royal court is far different than it was in the countryside where these two sisters were raised, and before long their bid to earn the love of the king has transformed two once-happy sisters into bitter rivals. At first, it appears that Mary has triumphed in winning the king's favor by becoming his mistress and bearing him an illegitimate child. Despite her early success, however, Mary has underestimated just how clever and cunning her sibling can truly be. Not only does the relentless Anne manage to edge aside her sister in the eyes of King Henry, but she also succeeds in averting his gaze from his wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon, as well. Mary is driven by genuine affection for King Henry, while her sister Anne has only kept up the charade in a desperate bid to become the queen of England. Now, the growing chasm between two sisters is mirrored on a larger scale as England becomes divided more than ever before. As the consequences of their actions threaten to alter the course of an entire nation, these two sisters will ultimately discover that the only place they will find true strength and loyalty is in family, and that no matter what the consequences they will forever be bound by blood.

      I agree. I think of the women in this movie, Queen Catherine was by far the greatest. Even when she was humiliated and banished and her husband stolen from her by the Boleyn's, she never once allowed her character to be stained. Walking past those who scorned her, she was still a proud and noble Queen. Of the two sisters, I think Mary was the better of the two. Yes she played her family's game and bedded the king, but she didn't allow power to corrupt her as Anne and her father and uncle did. She chose love over power, even though it meant casting aside the jewels and silks of her noble life and marrying a poor farmer. At least she and her children lived out their lives in peace and happiness while the rest of them died in disgrace. She was literally the ONLY one of all of them who got a happy ending. Anne wanted to be Queen and it destroyed her. Literally. Henry allowed lust and his desire for power to destroy him....EVEN when Mary gave him the son he so craved. The Uncle had 3 generations of his family damned after he died. The only ones who came out of it were Mary and Queen Catherine.

      Anne Boleyn wasn't quite the bitch the way this movie and its novel portrayed her to be. It may be based off of historical events, but it is historical fiction and you should take the events of it with a grain of salt. For example, there is no evidence whatsoever that Anne ever slept or tried to sleep with her brother George. All credible Tudor historians discard that charge (along with all the others) against Anne Boleyn as being truth.

      Don’t believe all that crap put by Philippa Gregory’s book and movie.
      Go watch The Tudors and Anne of the Thousand Days.
      And “Anne of the Thousand Days” is even more accurate than The Tudors, showing that Anne was really the prey and avoided all the king avances instead of that of both Natalie showing up a home wrecker plotting with her relatives to marry the royal stalker. Read all his letters to her and that specific one in which he remembers that he’s the hunter and she’s the prey. Sent with a dead buck killed by him so that she would remember of the hunter while eating it.
      The movie shows more characters like: her mother Elizabeth Howard and Henry Percy, the count whom with she betrothed, she loved and was loved back way before she met Henry. The movie shows how Henry separated the two by ordering cardinal Wolsey to annul their compromise.

    I believe that Henry was always jealous of Arthur. he was jealous that Arthur was the heir, he was their father's favourite, and finally that he had Katherine.
    History remarks how everyone was blown away by Katherine's beauty when she came to England. Henry VII even wanted to marry her after the death of his son because of his lustful desires (plus the dowry). But Henry VIII was said to be in love with her, to have a school boy crush so to speak. He waited it out to marry her. I believe it was because he wanted to have the final thing or rather all the toys that his brother would never get to have, to further confirm to himself once and for all that he was always better than the sickly weak prince Arthur. He got Arthur's crown and his wife. He probably felt he deserved it all too.

Not until you know what it is to be in fear for your position, to be in fear that your husband will hate you for being unable to give him a son, to be afraid. Not until you know what it is to hear that your husband has died and to fear that what you've been preparing for your whole life will be taken away and that you'll be sent home ashamed. Not until you know what it is to welcome each of his women to your court and to know it's to them that he goes at night while you wait for him and bear his children and praise his name. What, did you think that your sister was the first? Did you think that you will be the last? I learned to stop hoping that this one would be the last a long time ago."

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      No, but it's what she would've wanted to say I bet. If not in real life, than in this scene. Her reign as Queen was longer than any of the other 5 wives, and she did put up with all his affairs for years. What she actually said to Henry right after this when she went into court was “Sir, I beseech you for all the loves that hath been between us, and for the love of God, let me have justice and right, take of me some pity and compassion, for I am a poor woman and a stranger born out of your dominion, I have here no assured friend, and much less indifferent counsel: I flee to you as to the head of justice within this realm. Alas! Sir, wherein have I offended you, or what occasion of displeasure have I designed against your will and pleasure? Intending (as I perceive) to put me from you, I take God and all the world to witness, that I have been to you a true and humble wife, ever conformable to your will and pleasure, that never said or did anything to the contrary thereof, being always well pleased and contented with all things wherein ye had any delight or dalliance, whether it were in little or much, I never grudged in word or countenance, or showed a visage or spark of discontentation. I loved all those whom ye loved only for your sake, whether I had cause or no; and whether they were my friends or my enemies. This twenty years I have been your true wife or more, and by me ye have had divers children, although it hath pleased God to call them out of this world, which hath been no default in me.
      And when ye had me at the first, I take God to be my judge, I was a true maid without touch of man; and whether it be true or no, I put it to your conscience. If there be any just cause by the law that ye can allege against me, either of dishonesty or any other impediment to banish and put me from you, I am well content to depart, to my great shame and dishonor; and if there be none, then here I most lowly beseech you let me remain in my former estate, and received justice at your princely hand. The king your father was in the time of his reign of such estimation through the world for his excellent wisdom, that he was accounted and called of all men the second Solomon; and my father Ferdinand, King of Spain, who was esteemed to be one of the wittiest princes that reigned in Spain many years before, were both wise and excellent kings in wisdom and princely behavior. It is not therefore to be doubted, but that they were elected and gathered as wise counsellors about them as to their high discretions was thought meet. Also, as me seemeth there was in those days as wise, as well-learned men, and men of good judgement as be present in both realms, who thought then the marriage between you and me good and lawful Therefore is it a wonder tome what new inventions are now invented against me, that never intended but honesty. And cause me to stand to the order and judgment of this new court, wherein ye may do me much wrong, if ye intend any cruelty; for ye may condemn me for lack of sufficient answer, having no indifferent counsel, but such as be assigned me, with whose wisdom and learning I am not acquainted. Ye must consider that they cannot be indifferent counsellors for my part which be your subjects, and taken out of your own council before, wherein they be made privy, and dare not, for your displeasure, disobey your will and intent, being once made privy thereto. Therefore, I most humbly require you, in the way of charity, and for the love of God, who is the just judge, to spare the extremity of this new court, until I may be advertised what way and order my friends in Spain will advise me to take. And if ye will not extend to me so much indifferent favour, your pleasure then be fulfilled, and to God I commit my case!" @@freedomgirl1542

    I just hate this movie, it doesn't follow the true historical story in any way. Mary Boleyn and Anne Boleyn weren't rivals, because King Henry VIII was already done with Mary Boleyn after a few years and when they were busy Anne was back in France being the lady-in-waiting of the Queen of France. When Anne Boleyn returned was the moment Henry was done with Mary and left her alone while she was pregnant of him. So Mary could't even be in this movie because she was with the rest of her family send away from court and married William Carey. Queen Catherine didn't maybe like the idea of Henry having Anne as mistress, but she never called her a 'whore' because when Catherine was even sent away from court and a few years later she was laying on her deathbed she even pitied Anne. The Reason why she pitied her because there was news that Henry's eyes were turning away from Anne.

      No, she didn't really. The right of conquest is how William the Conqueror, mind you the persons Edward III traces his legitimacy to in terms of actual historical kings, got the throne. The right of conquest trumps any blood right to the throne as what use is it to be some other guys descendant if you don't have an army to back it up. And still, if Catherine really did have a stronger claim do you really think Ferdinand and Isabella would have had them marry; an act that acknowledged the Tudors as legitimate rulers. And if the Tudors were so illegitimate why would Mary, Queen of Scots have based her claim to the English throne on the fact that she was a descendant of Henry VII, a Tudor, or why would a French King marry Mary Tudor, Henry VII's daughter, and Henry VIII's sister? Saying that Catherine had a better claim is just dumb because clearly if people thought she had a better claim people would have tried to put her or Charles V on the throne; people tried that with the pretenders during Henry VII's reign and later with the male descendants of James II/VII of England/Scotland.

    Well, you know what they say about the victor writing history. When Mary died, her sister's faction wrote the history and slandered Mary. Granted, Mary was a failed monarch, but she wasn't the bloody monster that she was depicted to be. Elizabeth I and Henry VIII killed more people, yet, they were spared the epithet of "bloody."

      Elizabeth has killed more people but she still killed less people per year than Mary has. Bloody was added mostly because her religious zeal didn’t help her case when burning Protestants. She has done wrong but it is still the majority the fault of Henry of why Mary became the way she is.

    I still get chills listening to Catherine of Aragon since she really was that Queen!!! I’ve always had mixed feelings on Anne Boleyn since she was also victimized by Henry, but at the same time she still betrayed a woman who was nothing but kind to her in the royal court. I think Shakespeare would have loved to write a drama about Henry VIII’s reign, but out of respect (and possibly fear) for Elizabeth I, he kept that tragedy to himself 😅

    • @alexsmith4937
      @alexsmith4937 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, Shakespeare and John Fletcher collaborated on a play entitled "Henry VIII", which deals with the fall of Wolsey, Anne's rise, Katherine's hearing before the king and his courtiers, the rise of Cromwell, and the treason trial of the Duke of Buckingham. The play was produced about 10 years after Elizabeth I had died, which was probably prudent for the reasons you have noted.

Anne was regal, dignified, and strong as well and set up political movements against some heavy hitters in the English court. they were both amazing women, but Aragon is not as perfect as people wish she was.

    Notice how each of the girls treat Catherine. Anne foolishly considers herself superior to Catherine and behaves arrogantly to the queen without any respect. Mary rightfully is frightened of Catherine and respects her, feeling humbled and shameful for her actions.
    Great foreshadowing to their fates. Anne's arrogance would play a part in her demise while Mary's humility would lead her to finding happiness.
