How am I just finding out that this show was cancelled via TH-cam COMMENTS?!?!?! Please, as a history lover, BRING IT BACK. I know it’s not 100% accurate but that’s what made it so GREAT!
I find that viewing this show as a history lover makes it kinda bad since it's really only occasionally (as the intro says) accurate. Like 15~30%. Viewing it more as an alternate history type thing was the only way I could get down with it. That's when it became great for me at least.

He's very good at being loveable and strange, terrifying and tender-hearted, maybe it's because he likes taking roles that bring a modicum of order from utter chaos, that change monstrous people into good-hearted folk because they were challenged to strive for greatness in a way that meant not losing their soul. No matter the reason without knowing his, but I also love that he plays such unique characters.
Nicholas Hoult's acting in this show, I mean Elle was brilliant too... but he was absurd and yet quite scary sometimes with this capacity for violence, idiotic and threatening, deceitful and sincere and he made it all believable.
Traits that Peter III would pass to his son, Paul I and his grandsons, Nicholas I and Alexander I: -Paul I is his idiocy. -Nicholas I is his violence and threat. -Alexander I is his sincerity and deceitfulness.
Nicholas Hoult is an incredibly under appreciated gem, in every performance I’ve seen him in he camouflages perfectly and I walk away thinking “Dang that guy did a great job! I should see what else he’s in!”
He walked this insane line where he was SUCH a bad person a lot of the time, and yet he had this odd sincerity and almost naivete to him that made him weirdly sympathetic the whole time. Not once did I ever want him dead, which is wild because he was often straight up evil and horrible. All the performances in the show are great, but Hoult was pulling off something magical with Peter and I can't quite figure out how he did it.
The ability for someone to love another the way he loved her was also a deciding factor for me not ever wanting him dead. I teared up when he did not emerge from that ice. When someone is able to tap into love on that level, it’s probably the most admirable trait a human being can poses. They can no longer be a villain.
I have a bittersweet feeling about this🥺, I am sad about Peter's death and the cancellation of the show, but at the same time I feel that it was the most appropriate since the actors managed to fit together so well, that seeing just Catherine's character would not have been been enough. At least now there is this story which ended in a good way, they closed well.
This series is GENIUS!! I can't believe it's been axed. Elle Fanning, Nicholas Holt and the rest of the cast were all extraordinary and should have won a bunch of awards.
The greatest tragedy is them killing Peter, he's character is too Great but historically he did die, so soon. The Great will never be the same, I love those two too much 😢
Peter was considered mentally regressive and physically weak. He had doctors trying to figure out why he had trouble sexually and part of the reason they decided was his absolute inability to mature. Catherine forced him to abdicate and a brother of one of her lovers(one of her baby daddy's) killed Peter thankfully. She reigned over 34 years. Longer than any other female monarch. She brought the gold age to Russia with the arts, education, improved commerce etc.. westernized and was quite independent. She loved Russian culture and did anything she could to strengthen it. Peter while alive, provided smallpox, collected toy soldiers and had many people put to death for fun.
started watching to have a silly show to pass the time, never would have guessed how invested i would be in those characthers and in their lovestory as hole. when peter died i sobbed like a child, nicholas hoult is a wizard of acting i swear
(in the show) She basically stokholm syndrome'd herself to love him and he had probably never encountered a woman who could tolerate his tomfoolery for so long. Trauma bonding at it's best
But he didn’t … She tries and kills his doppelgänger who doesn’t end up dying either. The last moment is her sobbing in his arms with regret of sort after he presents himself in front of her.
It really shows that if people communicate and talk about their feelings and have understanding for one another and want the relationship to work it can
Not really, since the video is based around their relationship in the show where she actually DID love him, both at the beginning and post-coronation to some degree. Irl absolutely, she hated him so this would be an absurd video idea if it was intended as a historical information video. But it isn't. It's based on the satirical historical drama where events played out a little differently.
At first I fell in love with this show so much that I orded a biography of Catherine II. Then, I fell in love with the book, but since I read it, everytime I try to watch this show I feel agony.
I just came upon this show, so I have a question, if u don't mind...I don't know much history about Catherine and Peter, but is this based on actual facts within their relationship? Or is this show complete satire?
I’m just disappointed they did the coup before Catherine had her illegitimate baby boy, bc the story of his birth is PERFECT for the show (tell me Catherine ordering Marial to burn her house down to distract Peter bc she knows he likes watching the flames and she can secretly give birth wouldn’t happen in this show)
@@RandomName-my2uo I wasn’t talking abt Paul I was talking about Aleksei Bobrinsky.
