This movie is chilling because of the lack of resolve. The villain faces no consequences and the innocent pay for it.

I think that’s what makes it realistic. Usually in real life good things happen to bad people and they suffer no consequences

Like reality. Sadly people are mostly under the impression good wins out over bad the most often and it's actually not true in all actuality more often then not there is no real good or bad victims are never really just Victims villains are never truly just villains. Only in cases such as the defiling of innocence is it ever truly black and white yet those are the cases that most go unjustified

People with autism have emotions and some struggle with perspective-taking, but they do have empathy. Sherlock’s character should not be conflated with sociopathy.

She’s definitely been assaulted - that’s the Chinese burn conversation at dinner. Cumbers jumps in to explain the marks on her wrist away. “No harm done, eh Lola” is him telling her what happened between them isn’t a big deal and she’s fine.
The scene at the table is a prelude of what’s to come. Briony, in her naïveté, falsely accuses the twins of hurting Lola just as she later falsely accuses Robbie. She’s so sure of herself she doesn’t bother to get all the facts, nor does she realize such stories have ramifications. In providing false stories, Briony gives Cumbers a cover story and makes it harder for Lola to speak up because she’s already told the story of what happened.

At the time I first watched this movie years ago, Benedict Cumberbatch wasn't on my radar. I didn't know who he was, so I had since forgotten that he was in this movie, much less that he played that loathsome antagonist. I'm kind of amazed and appalled to discover that despicable monster was played by one of my (now) favorite actors. He must have done a good job, because this disgusting character still gives me the creeps.
There are a handful of movies I've only ever been able to watch once and this is one of them because all the good people are destroyed by the cowardice and greed of others. All the actors did a great job, but the story is just relentlessly sad and depressing.

Does anyone wonder if Lola knew the whole time that it was Paul Marshall? But in her head, she figured it was love between them so she never said anything? Otherwise, how come she didn't want to look at Briony after the wedding? Almost like she had something to hide.

I think she knew all along. But along the way she got groomed by this creep. She went along with Briony’s lie because maybe it was a way for her to cope, believing that Briony saw Robbie and not Paul. But in reality they both knew it was him, so at the wedding I think Lola turns her head away quickly because she knew her cousin knew what this man did to her and never said anything to help her and Lola never said nothing either because not only would she expose Paul but also Briony’s lie. Both girls look incredibly sad in this scene, Lola looks like she possibly feels hate towards her cousin and Briony feels remorseful for watching this two getting married. It’s one of those movies where every single detail is up to debate, since it’s a very complex story. 😔

I really like the way this scene is written, because we clearly see Lola flirt and try to make herself an adult when she is not, explicitly distinguishing herself from her younger brothers. Yet none of what happens later is her fault. The actualt adult is clearly a predator and should have known better.

I have perhaps the opposite view as so many others here. I am not a Cumberbatch fan at all, I’ve found him grating ever since Sherlock made so aggravating the character I loved so much in the books. With how chilling he is in this role, I actually like his portrayal a lot more, because they’re not trying to frame his character as a good guy.
