She was the Queen of England and he was a guest in her court and country, despite tensions between England and Spain, they still had to follow protocol, bowing before Royalty would be so deeply ingrained that would be something they do, even without thinking. I was lucky enough to attend the premier of this movie in Los Angeles. Granted it was a fluke but I was there. We were seated just a few rows back from Ms. Blanchett (who was particularly STUNNING that night). This scene got a roar of approval for the Queen from the audience. It was quickly followed by one slight female giggle from around her area, which in turn, got a laugh from most of us. We gathered she was quite pleased with how the scene played.

This is why I draw a great distinction between actors/actresses and movie stars. Can we take a moment to appreciate Laurence Fox's character, takes a moment to process what just happened and then draws his sword being all like "bitch you dare insult my queen!"
He drew on the Ambassador. It was a big deal, what he said (not the pirate part, that was an open secret - though Dudley might have been on the outs by this part, I can’t remember - , it was openly calling a queen a slattern in her own church, *that* was like slapping the Pope). Guard-Dude was risking an international incident, which is why he backed down so quickly, but he had no choice but to draw on Spanish Ambassador-Guy no matter how outnumbered he was by the Spanish guards.
In modern terms, he may as well ripped your country’s flag off the pole and took a dump on it (if your flag was also an altar cloth).

MY GOD. Cate was just fabulous in this role. I love both of her Elizabeth movies. seen many times.
I like how he bows to the queen before leaving. Back then even enemies had a certain respect for each other
She was the Queen of England and he was a guest in her court and country, despite tensions between England and Spain, they still had to follow protocol, bowing before Royalty would be so deeply ingrained that would be something they do, even without thinking. But generally other people of the time who were enemies wouldn’t bow, it’s because she is the Queen.
Remember, too... This ambassador is ultimately just a messenger boy. The words of insult he spoke were King Philip's words, you see ?
I agree. There was a certain respect and just proper way to behave. There were rules and etiquette. And even if you did not like someone or something, you wanted to behave properly and appropriately. To act otherwise is a disgrace.
