  • Unrestored condition, 1948 Ferguson TE-20, with factory P3 conversion. After my Fergies first start this year, I found the water had drained away, so I'm looking for leaks. Update: 1 month later everything is OK. No leaks. Next I'll do my David Brown 850, seen in the background.

    Made many a TEA into a proper usefull machine did a P3 conversion, a just a shame a low squat fuel tank and lower mounting of the radiator might have resulted in a standard bonnet line! The conversion package of course had to be economically viable and be attractive within a certain price range. I always feared I might catch my fingers between the steering wheel and the adapter which raised the bonnet/ hood/ engine cover! Nice lovely little lump which lead the way to the MF 35 3cylinder but Ford were already there with the Dexta!

    She's running nice mate and you are no fool cause you know your stuff. I had one many moons ago it was'nt as fresh as that and it gave a lot of bother but none the less it was a great experience

    if this engine had new rings and bearings, and clr in the rad and new rad hoses and new anti-freeze, this tractor would be running fine 70 years down the road. If no diesel , well the farmer could raise sunflowers and crush the seeds and make his own oil and still run fine 100+ years further. Run diesel in the engine oil supplementing the oil and drain out after 20 min and put synthetic 15-40 oil for easier starting. Looks like he caught his failure to check the fluid levels in time with easy starting, but I don't know what the starting temp was. Here I am sure it would have taken longer in November. Not sure how well a snow blower would function on the front. watching the blow by I am not sure but what diesel in the oil for a few minutes would even stop the blow by and get by without new rings.

    Great video. Many thanks. I suspect the missing coolant boiled away because the radiator cap no longer seals properly. The lip around the radiator cap is in need of a clean to help the cap make a good seal.

      Thanks. I just had a look at the cap and it's in good original order, so I cleaned it and refitted it. Water is still OK, so I am treating this as a lesson learned and check it before every use.

    I'd love to see this basically sound tractor fixed up so that it looked like new - it just needs a few bits to tighten it up and start on the button. Easystart destroys engines - breaks my heart to see people use it.

      It's been used on all 3 of my tractors, for the last 25 years and they all run perfectly. So where's your evidence?

    re cold start. my version is a 1/2 bsp plug threaded into the inlet manifold, simply screw out the plug and wind the motor while a little gas blow lamp is blowing it's flame into the hole, it never fails and has no I'll effects on the engine, always grease the plug to catch any thread residue or have the 1/2 bsp hole facing down so all thread residue falls to the. ground.

    Why are there two little holes in the engine near the clutch? I have the same tractor and I do not know what the use is for the holes?

    The Ferguson TEF-20 diesel tractor (Standard 4 cylinder diesel engine) was not introduced until 1951. What year was your originally petrol tractor converted to Perkins Diesel power?

      The log book and serial number, give the manufacturing date as 1948 (Standard Motor Company, petrol). The P3 came out in 1953 and was supplied as part of a kit, but I have no way of knowing when it was fitted. The engine number would give an approximation..

    Hi just helping the inlaw doing one of these trying to get it a log book cannot find any engine, vin axle numbers at all any advice appreciated.

      My engine number, is on a riveted brass plate, on the right side of the rocker cover.
      My chassis number, is on a riveted aluminium plate, in front of the steering wheel.
      Both are covered in paint, so I can't completely read either of them.

    Hi there , I am doing work on a similar tractor & was wondering if you help me. I need the outside diameter measurement & the depth of the bushings/spacers that hold the fuel filter to the battery tray. These are missing on mine so will have to make two. I know its a 1/2" whitworth bolt that holds it all together so inside diameter is 1/2". Cheers

      The spacers are , 1 inch x 1 inch. The bolts have a 7/16ths shaft diam. Let me know if you need more info..

      P.3 three cylinder, P.4 four cylinder & P.6 six cylinder. There were several versions of each model built.

      On fb there is a group also many Pdf on Google mate. My brother's got one it's still working. Am currently working on 35 3 cylinder Perkins slightly newer not much. Tho lol.👍

      @@AliMackMechanical No you see I can't find the spesific manual, and I dut that I can find that exact engines manual, I could do with becous it's mainly the engine that I'm working on. It's an old factory conversion job, I belive before furgieson tried to make theyr own diesel engine.
      Otherwise I think I might be narrowing to my problem, tanks for trying to help.

    why on earth are you using Easy Start gas for"!! The P3 is such a easy starter, Try replacing glow plug asap before if not already knackered the engine, Need to get her and keep her in the barn, Crank seals need replacing, She looks all there and need to have a good servicing,. We have three p3s and all start on the button, Sure if you are in a tractor club they will also say keep away from the gas, before she dies,.
