I've got a similar engine built in 1901 on a saw mill. It's a Fairbanks-Morse, 30 H.P. it belonged my Great Grand Dad then my Grand Dad and then my Dad. We just got through a complete rebuild and added a condensate recovery system. It runs like a top now. Mine has a horizontal fire tube boiler and not a vertical like yours.
RE John Willis: Fairbanks-Morse “similar engine” (Steam?) I was not aware FM made a steam engine. But if you made a condensate recovery system it sounds like a boiler was involved. Nice family history. 👍🏼
Hi, I just ran across this, I built a scale model about fifteen years ago, bronze and iron castings, about inch and a quarter bore, I never built an oiler for it, but have run it on compressed air, now I guess I've got to finally make an oiler for it. Thanks for showing this, I spent a few weeks finicking on valve timing till it was just right. Semper Fidelis.
My younger son and me are building something similar, though from a kit of parts. And it isn't one of those cheap knockoffs. It has been a fascinating learning experience.
Young people are a demographic I am hoping will find enjoyment in my video presentations. Sure you can't drive these machines with your thumbs and there's no joystick. In it's day, this was the high art of technology.
LineshaftRestorations Totally! I love thinking about how these old machines were the peak tech of their day. Unfortunately too many people my age are addicted to today’s peak tech, and have no other hobbies or interests. As for me, I have never played video games, and have no desire to do so. My hobbies are working on cars, airplanes, and especially engines!
Mister! I just enjoyed the hell ! out of this video, I'm 53 and I've always wanted to cut timber off grid and build a cabin using... You guessed it! And you just showed me a lot of principle about it. I tip my hat and thank you. You take care 👍
Can work anywhere without a gas or diesel supply. Charge batteries. You don't get more high-tech than that. Also with a low speed pmg connected it becomes a very environmental friendly power plant.
Wonderful and beautiful machine first time in my life that I have de opportunity to see such a steam machine thank you for share the video must be a great experience be in front of that machine and see how it works
Thanks for sharing this! Can you tell me what horsepower this engine is rated at, and what the RPM would be at maximum power? I am also wondering if you have a way to add water to the boiler while it is under pressure?
Catalog information says it should produce 18HP at 240rpm for a 7x10 engine and 24HP at 240rpm for an 8x10 engine. Unfortunately I'm not sure of the engine bore. I didn't measure it when first inspecting it.

I'm sure those old steam whistles filled the east Texas air back in the very early 1900's . With all the sawmills around back then people probably used the whistle sound to keep up with the time of day. Great video !
The ideal dream drive would be a small fusion generator for heat. Small boiler, piston or turbine drive and a condenser to capture and cool the liquid media, so the whole thing was a closed system.
This is poetry in motion. I have no idea what the adjusting accomplished but it was beautiful seeing this grand old engine working again. When was the last time it was started? What will you use it for?
It is a pity this man doesn't show us how the regulator works, which is built into the flywheel. This is the most important to show, to understand how that work.
An operator of this machine from 1895 looks at the engines I work on and must think how dangerous. I’ve watch this video twice and would still slowly back away from this thing. However it is a marvel, I would have loved to have seen and met the men that developed this, and those who cast the parts. Wow.
In its time, machines like this could be dangerous but not so much if given healthy respect. Even today simple tools you might not think of as being overly dangerous but can be if careless. I had a friend run a drill bit in his leg because of carelessness.
Minor repairs are being done but nothing more. A few period lubricators have been added. The more it is run the less it seems to be leaking steam. In the followup load test video, this is a little more apparent.
simple design makes it durable as less components are there to drive the engine...a little arrangements in boiler, piston and valve let this beast(steam engine) works again...

Something very pleasant about a steam engine. Thank you.
Thank You Dear, only because of you we got the chance to see this wonderful steam engine.❤️ Love from India
Excellent, I now know how to tune my steam engine. Just have to procure an engine & boiler & I will be in business.
Once upon a time, this was a high-tech machine 🧐
Edit : Great video, thank you for letting us join.
I believe it still is a high tech machine. You or I sure could not walk up and run it.

Yeah but this engine was designed to last for generations no modern engine can do that

What steam pressure and how many HP is the engine rated for please
Initial tests were conducted with about 20psi steam. Subsequent test were made with about 50psi. The load tests were made using about 95psi.
This engine is rated at 24hp.
Excelente trabalho... parabéns
