- Today we're checking out a camera I'm severely disappointed with. The Canon G7X III should be an iterative upgrade that fixes all of the older problems and making this new Canon camera one of the best ones that you could use for travel online video content.
But while it solved a couple problems it introduced a few more while not fixing some things that Canon really needed to cover.
Is it worth buying this brand new camera?

Canon leaving out 24fps doesnt make any sense at all. I cannot fathom how that would affect them in any way to just include it. So random, and so silly.

The way things are going, they are probably looking to push security firmware updates to existing cameras and forgetting to mention they removed 24p for all resolutions.
You honestly need way more subscribers than how many you have right now. You need like 1mill or 700k, you really do. You deserve it
Just got it in... wow the autofocus is... OMG TERRIBLE! I've just updated to latest firmware 1.1.0 and.... it's still bad. Going to try and make a decision.

I Preordered the day it was announced. Got it today, put down my M50 and started vlogging with the G7X. It sucks. I have to wait a full 5 seconds for it to find focus before I start talking and hope it keeps focus. I'm only using 1080p and it's actually worse than my beat to heck Mark II. It will cost me $11 for the return shipping. It's actually that terrible. So disappointed.
Great video. The autofocus on Sony is so much better. It’s ashame because I have the G7xii and was looking forward to the iii. I’ll wait for the RX100VA replacement later this month. Built in ND filter with eye autofocus is a dream come true.
Yeah I didn’t really like the II that much either and was really hoping the III would wow me enough for me to buy one.
So glad you made this honest review. I’ve seen several reviewers who clearly are pandering to Canon and completely not mentioning the overheating or that ridiculously poor auto focus. On the positive note, when it’s actually in focus the image looks good. I would still recommend a M50 to someone just starting out. It’s cheaper, has great auto focus, a microphone input, and has quite a bit of room to grow if you use adapters. I personally don’t think the cropped 4K is a big deal because in my opinion 4K is not really a must have for vlogging and posting to TH-cam.
Sad...like many others we were waiting for something great here. Close, but misses it appears. Panasonic as reasonable alternative? Appreciate the video, fun and informative!

Good honest review whats the point of making a 4k camera if it can't do that on a consistent basis...Im not upgrading keeping my Canon G7X ii
I really want to upgrade to this because of the external mic to make the vlog sound quality better, but that autofocus :( it's so slow, whyyyyyyyy

Hi! Great video. What camera would you recommend me as everyday point and shoot. I like to use manual now and than but I prefer auto settings. Video is also important. I have sony rx100m1 but it sucks on auto settings because of its IQ.
Nice job on the video! Removing software features, using old sensor technology, not testing for heat issues, and charging $750. What company wouldn't go this route when dedicated camera sales are declining? lol.
I hope they can get the AF fixed and the 24fps maybe by a firmware update? Also if it has the same sensor as the Sony lines, it should be able to do the same thing right? I made a review comparing the Rx100 VA with the G7x iii so if you wanna see the AF difference check it out!

Chris K oh yeah, the Mark 7 has some aspects that make it worth getting, but the lens and internal ND are worth gold and better than the ‘7’.
And make the lens 20-70.
Frank Feng I agree that wider is more valuable than longer, but if going wider means losing a stop of aperture I would rather have the older, faster lens. It is a gem.

A great mic for the g7x Mark iii and the sony rx100 vii is the saramonic sr-xm1 mini mic
I keep reading that everywhere, but from what I've seen, or well, heard... it doesn't actually sound that great.
DJI has that FM-15 Fleximic that might do the trick.
Or like a decade ago the Sony ECM-DS70P was very popular.
Maybe one of 'em will come out with their own mic. Canon Asia confimed to me they're working on some accessories like a tripod/handle/remote.

Definitely made the right decision buying the mark ii! this just didn’t check all the boxes, it ALMOST did but they lost me at no dual pixel AF
How did it work? Has the AF problem been fixed with the 1.3 firmware update? I'm deciding whether to buy the Mark II or the Mark III.
Dang, I thought the autofocus was bad from the unboxing video you did, but it's way worse in this one! I wonder if it could be fixed by a firmware update?
I bought one and the nostalgia is winning me over right now, but I know that's going to change the second it overheats on me. Having an internal ND and the fast lens is so nice. The stabilization is also a lot better than it was on my RX100VI. Hell, I'd be able to forgive the contrast AF if 24fps were there, but I think that's what'll ultimately lead me to return it. Going to try filming at 25p and seeing if it bothers me when I put it on a 24p timeline since everything else I own does 24p like a normal camera should be able to.

Do you think firm wear will fix these problems? Or should I return and get the mark II.
I'm always curious what the mbps data rate is on the 1080p, because good 1080p is good enough for me.

No deal with the over heating
Even if Canon had chose to go with a sensor with PDAF on it, I don't think the Digic 8 CPU can actually handle it:
-No crop 4K -High frame rate -good AF, look at any Canon camera with a Digic 8 CPU, at best, it can only 2 of the 3 at a time.
Really informative. I was thinking of buying one but as you pointed out my lx10 is still "better" for my preference of uses, 1.4 aperture, dosen't over heat in 4k like the Sony RX I returned because it also overheated in 1080. As vlogger you need a camera that will run longer than 5 to 13 minutes so in not sure why ppl recommend the expensive RX. But while you make a lot of good points what if I didn't film in 4k, or didn't were sunglasses so the eye detection focus worked. I seem like a lot of you frustration besides the loud motorcycle [guilty].. are based on this im a pro attitude where anything but 24fps and 4k even when it shuts down the camera is unacceptable. Would you say it's better than the M2 for a new vlogger who wants to by a new camera with his firsts youtube pay out. When I first started watching EDD you talked to the everyone day user... this was a pro level video that "some wont be able to figure out" unless the know how to use a camera on the "M" setting. 😊
You had me interested in the G7Xm3 in the unboxing vid as it was so much less expensive than the RX100m7...now we know why...thanks for the honest review on the G7Xm3
I’m sure it’ll be a fine stills camera but the overheating and the autofocus are just problems I can’t get over.
@@TheEverydayDad The funny thing is that they market the g5x line as a stills oriented camera and the g7x3 was supposed to be the new small form factor vlogging machine. That's sad to hear about the 4k over heating. Just when everybody thinks there might be a good option hitting the market..... I'll just keep the mark 2 and m50 and maybe just finally pull the trigger on a A7iii! Sony is looking better and better with each new Canon release.

Interested to see what your take is on the G5X mark II
I own previous versions of Canon and Sony’s coming from an old school mentality I place my cameras in manual focus and custom white balance in that way I remove any possibility of focus shift and color shift, even with a state of the art focus system it can still get fooled, Canon’s stock has dropped over 60% in the past several months due to lackluster sales, this new camera won’t help. Your reviews are presented in a straight forward manner, keep up the great work.

Should I get the Mark II instead?
I'm not really interested in 4K, so I'll just go 1080p and I just want to do some casual vlogs.
Does the AF work better or is the same with the Mark II on 1080p?
But am I really losing out by not having mic input and 120 fps slow mo (for b roll stuff)?

You should make an updated review of G7X III.
A good audio choice for the G7x3 is the Rode wired LAV mic because you could clip it to your shirt.
But no 24 frames per second is idiotic when the g7x2 has it. (my favorite point and shoot)

TEDD, out of all the cannon point and shoot cameras, which would you recommend?
The one I like the most is the G5xII but I don’t really recommend any of their point and shoot cameras.
Oof the AF seemed worse than the Mark II. Could switching it to PAL for 25p work or is that not recommended?

Great honest review. I wouldn't call it negative just honest. I got a little Saramonic mic for $25 that can just plug into the mi jack and it has a swivel so you can easily move it a great solution for this and the RX100vii. I skipped this and pre ordered the Sony RX100vii can't wait to get it!
I really wanted to like this camera, I do like the G5XII and would recommend that over this.
I'm absolutely excited to check out the RX100VII and hope its able to keep up with my expectations.
there's no dual pixel because they cheap out and bought the older generation of Sony sensor without phase detect, i.e. the rx100iv sensor. I'm going to guess that the G5xIII review will be the same as the G7xIII. Canon use the same Sony sensor in both cameras.

Does the G7x III have dust sealing? I really really enjoyed my mk1 for stills but I stopped using because dust started appearing on the images.
I know this video is four years old but now in 2024 with the iPhone 15 that can record 4K and have external audio plugged in. Is there really any reason to have a G7 X Mark three or I competitor?

I used an LX10 about 2 years ago and I really need to try it out again.
Mine overheated in the first 2 minutes without even recording video. I was just setting up the wifi and connecting to my phone. But guess what? I don't care cause it's a game changer with the ability to do live streaming on the go and traveling in such a small package. I just did a live stream outside (not in some home studio), and worked wonders compared to doing it on a phone or at home
Every single video on this camera the persons face is always out of focus 😐. Seems worse than the Mark ii tbh
One question, was the face detection AF turned on when you were outside vlogging? I assume it was. Which is even more of a fail for Canon, that it cannot even detect a face right in front of it.

Hi I have a Canon EOS M3, it tends to hunt for focus quite often. I was thinking of selling for a Canon G7X mk3, or A Sony RX100 VII, but the Sony is more expensive. Please can you advise me. I got a Sony rx100 VA and have been much happier with it than I ever was with the Canon g7x mark ii I have. I feel both the video and photo quality are nicer on the Sony rx100 and I was able to get mine for the same price as the Canon g7x mark iii is being sold for now.
Like most of the reviews of the G7X III, they need updating. The firmware update in summer 2020 added 24fps, and made a big improvement in the focus issue. The only remaining one is the overheating when shooting 4k. But..... this camera is aimed at YTers/vloggers. It is NOT aimed at anyone wanting to produce TV programmes! I shoot 1080p at 24fps and get very good cinematic quality for my needs. Add the ext mic socket and the built in ND filter and it's hard to beat for the price.

That's why I got away from the Point and Shoot scene because I love the ability to change lens and have pretty much what ever i need, if I want a 25mm then BAM..i can change it, 45-150mm BOOM i can change it and the fact that my Lumix G7 is just as light as a Point And Shoot, I'll stick with it.

As a content creator myself and seeing all the attention that was coming from this camera I was definitely about to check out some videos about it (wasn’t going to purchase at all just a huge canon fanboy lol) but I’m glad you’re the first video I actually chose to watch about it. Everyday Dad keeps it 💯 ✊🏾✊🏾

The other reviews were so disingenuous about praising this thing it really made me sad. They were selling out clearly.

Pretty spot on with your review. As an owner of the Mark ii, I too am disappointed. I am looking forward to watching your vids on the Sony RX 7. That might be the camera to own in terms of point and shoots. Sony might end up winning me over.
Yeah its pretty disappointing. Its a tough pill to swallow that they couldn't add this better focusing option.
You pretty much nailed why the G7xiii is a failure. The auto focus alone is inexcusable. The camera really should be recalled. It’s defective! And even tho the Sony RX100vii has killer auto focus, they dropped the f1.8 lens & ND filter! Why? I find this odd because both cameras finally added an ext audio jack cause Canon & Sony knew people were buying them for vlogging. So its ashame & kind of a head scratcher why both companies crippled these two cameras for vlogging in other ways. Why? To try and upsale people to buy more expensive models? I wanted to buy one of these, but will sit this cycle out, and wait to see what next years models have. Hopefully canon & sony will listen to the feedback.

I can not decide which camera is for me?..M 50 or any canon camera?..I would like to record my drawings for 5-6 hours from top view.. :( M50 has not charge cable ..I have learned that before using always have to charge battery :(

I honestly dont know. Like legitimately I dont understand why you would take out basic features you already have in your cameras.
That's what they get for using the RX100 IV sensor. Overheating! And apparently crap contrast-based C-AF.
Hopefully they can pull a Pansonic and save it a little with a firmware update. Do like Sony and give us a tripod mode, where the threshold for overheating gets raised, but risks the camera getting uncomfortably hot to still handhold. Give us control of sensitivity and speed of C-AF and make the algoritm in general more reliable. It often puts a square on my subject, but refuses to focus until I tap the screen. And throw in 24p while your at it with the FW updates.
How does it do for actual photos?
So EveryDay Dad is the Canon G7x mark 2 better then the the 3 because I am deciding which one I should get and I don’t know
They are close enough that unless you really want the 4K or the live streaming thing that I’d personally go with the mark 2. But for me I wouldn’t buy either.

Honesty. Respect. I love Canon cameras so much. But they keep pushing me to Sony with their insanity. Sadly I am gone now. I love my Canon ex, but she kept holding out on me.
Personally I thought the g7x II was crap anyway. I bought it thinking it would be an in-between camera and the quality was CRAP. The pictures it took were bad and the video was worse than a iphone. I didn't see any benefit. I returned it. Wasn't worth $600, fast forward got the Dji Osmo Pocket and I love it. That's the ''in between''... in between your DSLR, Go Pro. I heard bad things about the III also looks like you've already discovered it.
Personally drop the 4K and do 1080p 24/30/60 (maybe 2K same sats) dual pixel, keep the mic input and flip screen, and drop the price A LOT. I would get one but my god nearly $800 for a point and shoot camera is way too much at the end of the day.
The autoficus on the G7X Mark 2 is much much quicker than the Mark 3. Canon took one step forward with the mic but took 2 steps backward by not improving on the auto focus and the heat concern... such a shame. Id rather buy the Sony RX100 mark 5. You will not have issues with auto focus

You think which one better?
All these Canon camera reviews with soft image. It's commonly recommended to to put sharpness at it's lowest in picture styles (like you seem to have in one clip). However, I have heard that Canons middle setting is something like other brands have at their lowest setting. So you should not use lowest setting on Canon cameras, where the slider actually does something.
