Thanks for yet another great and entertaining review. One addition to USB charging. I was pretty disappointed and also asked Canon support here in Germany. They weren't very helpful. What I found out was that it's not the power but a new(er) technology called PD (power direct) USB Charging using USB Type C cables. I bought a rather cheap 12V car charger with PD (recognizable by the extra Type C plug) and it works like a charm. Also a power bank that includes this technology works. The best part is: I figured out that it also charges my EOS R. So it's actually great but Canon should make clear that USB charging requires PD enabled chargers.

From a photo perspective, I'd go with the Canon. The controls and faster lens really make up for the disparity in tech. However, I'd be interested see if there are any optical improvements with the new lens of the g5x II. The original lens, which I'm guessing is the same on all the G7X line, was quite soft at the wide end, and I'm the sort of person that generally doesn't do a lot of pixel peeping. Hopefully these new lens is an improvement.
I'm thinking of getting a G5X II as a daily-carrying-everywhere camera that fits in my parka's pocket. Plus, he's the cutest among photography channels I've seen.
nice snd entertaining video, for me two cameras are too close in specs and features and they should have been merged in one camera model, the g5x ii should have been differentiated either with a larger sensor (e.g. 4/3 ) or with a much longer zoom.....

Hello, I'm searching for a camera which can take pictures in 300dpi, do you now if Canon G7X M II take photos with that resolution? if not, can M III do that? Thanks and greetings
I am looking to buy a new camera and am stuck between the advance compact cameras like Canon G series or Sony RX 100s and Canon M50 or Sony A6000. Can you elaborate on why these cameras are more expensive than interchangeable lens cameras like Canon EOS M50 or Sony a6000 although the later have bigger sensors, better auto-focus ability, etc. Essentially, I want to understand what I am paying for when going for the G series cameras apart from size. Because, when I looked at the specs, I am getting a smaller camera, but the sensor size is also smaller... Thank you..!
Thing is... Sony traded the sensitivity in for range... which I find a bad move and doesn't make it an enthusiast camera anymore... and the regular Joe will find it too expensive. A premium compact is supposed to be an alternative to a mirrorless or DSLR, not having to carry around all the equipment, just having the little all-in-one camera that gets results that are quite close, e.g. in terms of lowlight sensitivity, shallow depth of field, dynamic range, color richness, etc. For the times where you haven't any photography targets set for the day, but will be happy to have it on you when the oppertunity arrises and will be a better tool for better results than your smartphone. I had high hopes for the LX100 Mark II. The original was their first premium compact in that form factor with 4/3" sensor. You'd think there's much to improve on someone's first try at something and there definitely was! But the update was so lacklustre, it seems they're not even trying to compete with Sony and Canon is this market segment! What a shame. That could've been 'the one'. So... really all that remains is Canon... and they know it, they know that they can just go do what they want with it. So, as cameraconspiracies would elude to... the Canon cripple hammer strikes again! Worse C-AF than even the previous iterations and no 24p to name a few. At least I suppose it's user friendly, does come with an ND-filter built-in, does livestreaming, have a 3.5mm input etc. But boy... why ruin what could've been a fine camera? It's times like these that I wish Nikon would've put in a little more effort to realize their 1" premium compact DL line-up of cameras. Because between the RX100 VII, LX100 Mark II and G7 X Mark III/G5 X Mark II, there isn't really one that's great. Maybe if Sony releases a RX100, but with the VA lens and keeping it under a 1000 bucks... or Panasonic releasing an LX200.
When are you going to to a comparison between the G7XIII and the RX100 VA for photography? I need to know which one to get as a general purpose travel camera. I don't really care about video
Great video review! In my opinion the g7x m3 autofocus issue is a huge problem for those who want to take video footage. I had the g7x m2 which was incredibly faster and more responsive in the video autofocus. Now I'm in doubt to send it back to amazon or cross the fingers and wait october firmware update
Is the iq of g7x iii significantly better than g7x ii? What about its low light shots? Does it have a noticeable advantage over the g7x ii? Im planning to buy one but confused between the two. Btw I'm taking about still photography. Pushing to use this for family daily and travel photography. Or is it better to invest in high end phone? Thanks
what camera are you using to shoot this video? looks great! im looking to get a compact camera to shoot my videos would really help me out on this one thanks! :D
Still a useful video, thanks. As a 5d4 and grii user I find both these options frustrating. Why can't Canon produce a genuinely small photographer's camera with a viewfinder and good controls, leaf shutter and flash? Hotshoe, evf or hybrid ovf, small zoom or even better 35mm prime and aps-c like the x100 series or griii with crop. Trouser pocketable. ub-c. Go Canon....
Canon G5 X was very close to what you described, but its older sensor but for its age its actually hold up really well and the lens is very sharp, overall image quality should be comparable to RX100 M7 and these newer stacked sensors, even in low light its very impressive indeed.
How is the zoom? Is it still slow and slugish? I still cannot understand why these brands are not able to make such zoom so we could change from tele to wide with a half ring turn using fingers...is it so difficult?
[QUESTION].... Hi Chris (and other shooters). I'm looking for a compact, good at low light and wide enough for landscape. Which camera to do you recommend? Primary function will be stills. Budget, under $850. We plan to visit Venice in spring 2020 and don't want to take the 6D w/ 16-35. Too big and heavy. I'm planning to take lots of night shots and interior. Also of landscape throughout the day. We're traveling light weight, backpack/carry-on only.. 15lbs total. Thanks for your reviews. Looking forward to your reply.
I have a panasonic fz80 and I'm not happy with it. The photos taken with it are terrible. Is this one better? Should I sell the fz80 and get this one instead?
I keep saying, I think this form-factor/market would really benefit adapting it more to the growing number of people vlogging (or just making videos for their social media accounts) The camera's just about have it down but the flip screens and mic jacks should become standard. After than I could see these being the ideal camera for people going on their little "instagram vacations" or whatever where they're mixing photography and social media video.
On my EOS M you could turn the touch shutter off. Or well you could but the button to turn it on was on the screen so it turned on when it was hanging on the neck. The touch shutter is good for redundancy. It is good that there are few single components that turns the camera useless if they fail.
I haven’t heard or read anything about the effectiveness of the image stabilization. For landscapes I’d like to be shooting a 1” sensor at F2.8,4,or 5.6 and would like to keep the speed low enough (without resorting to a tripod) to keep ISO at base level.
This was very informative for me. This will be my first camera purchase ever and just wanted a nice camera for photos during me and my lady’s vacations. I will be picking up the canon G7 X Mark III and see what comes of it. Seems more of a stand still vlogging camera but I am hoping it will be good for parades and other fun events.
Hello Chris Nichols you and Jordan are the best I know it's it's just like watching old reruns Perry Mason Andy and Mayberry but you two are the best still love 👍
those cameras should allow for plugging in a USB-C headset with mic, just like in a smartphone - then G5X would also qualify as a decent vlogging cam. Why is that consumer electronics segment so 15 years behind the smartphone branch?
So for interview vids for a documentary, taking in account I'm a sound techie with not a lot of knowledge about cameras, Sony RX100 VII over the G7 X mark III? I heard the SONY ZV-1 is based on the RX100 and they're easy to use, but I'm under the feeling I don't like it as much as the G7.
One Inch sensor's still image and video quality usually can satisfy most of the casual user. If you are not into vlog (fixed screen, non-flip) or wanted new function but better zoom range, for new user in camera you can consider Panasonic ZS100 (TZ110) optical zoom range 250mm + dynamic zoom + digital zoom get a total 1440mm in 4k. Try luck on second hand for cheap price for start learner. Only sacrifice low light video quality a little bit (still image ok). Until you know more about camera and tend to upgrade year or years later then consider a updated camera to your new expectations.
I'm not a fan of Canon cameras, but that internal ND filter is a great idea. I'm using a used Sony RX100 ii that I enjoy and will upgrade before I visit Europe again.
I feel like the lens is worse than the zeiss counterpart on the sony rx100v. From some sample images online the edges seem to be quite soft and the background blur looks often pretty bad, too. Could anyone confirm that?
Can anyone help me?? I just got this camera but whenever I take a selfie or try to take a video its comes out mirrored?? Does anyone know how to cancel this?
Gentlemen, why is it that no one reviews or talks about manual settings in video on all these cameras? I want to upgrade from a Canon Elph 310HS, a very handy oldy wirh a great zoom and macro, but no manual override on exposure in video. I lnow some of these cameras have this feature, but it's never discussed. Why?
I got the Sony rx100vII for Christmas I've been taken photos with it everyday since and idk taken photos in the house with lower light makes my photo not clear n sharp n if I bump up the iso I dont want it noise and even shooting outside to me the Sony photo quality is not good so I'm going to best buy today to mess around with the cannon try it out and see! My camera I had was 6yrs old Sony hx50v 30x zoom pocket camera the sony rx100vII is a huge step up but I want start getting into portraits and being able to have a 1.8 instead of 2.8 for lower lighting so I dont have to drop my shutter or raise my iso while taken photos in a house will help I'd think? But I mainly do wildlife and landscape photography so I'm not really sure If the cannon can keep up but like i said it has to be better than my 6yr old Sony hx50v! I would really like your thoughts if I should return the Sony rx100vII or keep it
Canon makes the sensors for its EOS cameras. As far as I know it buys the others, that would be a reason for no DPAF. If Sony doesn't want to sell its latest sensor, what is a competitor to do?
own the G7x Mk1, its 5 years old now, I have a Fuji X100F and Fuji X70, but my wife hates both of the Fuji Camera's so I'm looking at getting a new point and shot,, I have had lots of Canon Compact camera's G9s, the old ixus range and have always been happy with them, but I'm going to get a Sony RX 100 Vii next or the 8 if that comes out soon, Sony just seem to be miles ahead with there auto focus, yes they are more expensive, but when did Money ever come into the equation when we buy camera gear, if it did I wouldn't have a 56mm f1.8, a 16-55 f2.8, 4 Billingham Bags and photography isn't even my job lol. Love the channel Thanks
Does anyone knows something about a possible G7X Mark 4? When they are gonna release it? I saw some rumors on the web that it may be coming sooner than expected. :))
Hi guys, my compliment for all your videos really professional and funny ;-) I am stuck in the decision to buy the Sony RX100 VII and the Canon GX5 II for taking picture. I really like the possibility to have a longer Zoom, but I also think that Canon with bigger apertur from 1.8 could be much better for picture. Which one you cam recon to me ? Thank you so much for your time Filippo :-D
Ouch! That hurt! For macro a touch shutter is way too shaky - at least it is for me. I need either a viewfinder so that I can support the camera with my forehead to be able to hold it steady, or even better, a tripod where I do not even touch the camera to take the picture - i.e. I use either the self-timer or a remote.
@@skakdosmer I use touchshutter for my long exposures all the time. Since i have that feature i never really use a remote control anymore(only with the smartphone app when i wanna take a photo of myself far away from the camera.) you barely have to touch the screen to activate it on the canon touchscreen. try to touch a screen as little as possible, then you know how sensitive these touchscreens are. nothing will shake at all.
Shocking! “Nothing will shake at all”? I'm shaking at the mere thought! LOL I solemnly swear that I shall never use such a questionable technique! (Besides, a smartphone being the ergonomic disaster that it is, I only use its camera in emergencies).
Have you tried using update 1.1.0? www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/cameras/point-and-shoot-digital-cameras/advanced-cameras/powershot-g5-x-mark-ii?subtab=downloads-firmware ●Mode 1 (newly added, with firmware version 1.1.0): This mode supports quick and responsive autofocus. Use this autofocus mode when you want the camera to be sensitive to tracking the subject, and for situations when the photographer is moving (such as shooting while walking).
Thanks for this review. I film mostly video and so the poor autofocus demonstrated here plus that reviews noted over at B&H by users, remove both these cameras from my gadget bag. What I need is a camera this size and/or a replacement to the ever tricky, troublesome, squirrelly GoPro Hero 7's. Any thoughts to a camera that might fit that's small, great video even in moderate to low light and not overly expensive?
Such a bummer! It's like their interpretation of the RX100 IV a few years too late! With the infamous Sony overheating even. And how the heck can you do worse C-AF than previous iteration? You're Canon, the go-to brand for no0bz that want a point-n-shoot and the basics done right. Man... they better come out with a firmware update addressing the poor C-AF (Panasonic did it), adding 24p (Olympus did it on the E-M1) and raise the overheating threshod (like Sony did). Clicky ring? What about MF? And why oh why didn't the G7 X Mark III get the same lens as the G5 X Mark II? Why didn't the G5 X Mark II keep the original G5 X body style? Would've been perfect with the G7 X Mark III's features. This whole thing is just a mindboggle!
I wish they would just add Dual Pixel AF on the G5 X, along with a microphone jack, even if they had to stick an extra hundred quid on the price. And the subsampled 4K will affect low-light performance a lot - even people happy with 3K quality still want good high ISO. I'm not sure how they are subsampling, but if they are only using 3840 of the 5472 horizontal pixels and doing the same vertically then they're only using 50% of the usable pixels of the sensor!
Jordan's right, the live streaming feature takes a while to get set up. Here's a video explaining how to do it: th-cam.com/video/AddB5ZMhMuo/w-d-xo.html
if your thinking the GR3 which I have been just looking at (& I can't afford that's why I'm trying to find a reason to like the XF10 instead), that is an APS-C sensor coupled to a prime lens.
@@gilean6179 I get the GRs are prime and these are zoom, but both have fast lenses in a compact body. That is the market I that came to mind. You don't get a lot of compact lenses (prime or zoom) with apertures faster than f2.8 typically.

Why isn't my Lumix LX10 (f1.4)($675)& my Lumix TZ200 (24-360)($645) even mentioned in here? huhuh.
When are you going to to a comparison between the G7XIII and the RX100 VA for photography? I need to know which one to get as a general purpose travel camera. I don't really care about video
G5x ii
Great video review! In my opinion the g7x m3 autofocus issue is a huge problem for those who want to take video footage. I had the g7x m2 which was incredibly faster and more responsive in the video autofocus. Now I'm in doubt to send it back to amazon or cross the fingers and wait october firmware update
The G7X III is a huge fail. Overheats in 4K in less than 4 minutes and the autofocus is significantly WORSE than the G7X II.
source?
@@MrHamncheez scores on Amazon for instance. use Google.
You guys are good funny yes and your vids are very informative. Love watching them on my iPad 👍😉
Thanks
what camera are you using to shoot this video? looks great! im looking to get a compact camera to shoot my videos
would really help me out on this one thanks! :D
Is Canon is market testing which features is profitable?
Hi jus bought canon G5X Mark ii... Any setup videos??
I have a panasonic fz80 and I'm not happy with it. The photos taken with it are terrible.
Is this one better? Should I sell the fz80 and get this one instead?
Which one is better for street photo? I like good usable ISO to take pictures with not enough light. G7X mk3 or RX100 IV ?a
I keep saying, I think this form-factor/market would really benefit adapting it more to the growing number of people vlogging (or just making videos for their social media accounts) The camera's just about have it down but the flip screens and mic jacks should become standard.
It doesn't matter what camera you guys are talking about, I'll always watch. :)
What camera are you using to record this video?
HI .. i just bought G5X II .. but i can't find the panorama function. (Forgive me .. as i am used to mobile photography) .. can you guide me???
I haven’t heard or read anything about the effectiveness of the image stabilization. For landscapes I’d like to be shooting a 1” sensor at F2.8,4,or 5.6 and would like to keep the speed low enough (without resorting to a tripod) to keep ISO at base level.
Cool. I want it!
How has the camera treated you?
I'm using a used Sony RX100 ii that I enjoy and will upgrade before I visit Europe again.
which one would you recommend canon g5x or ricoh GR III or sony rx100 VII?
I know I’m late to the game but do you know of a cage for the G5x mark ii? You can find one for the G7 but not
Love the detailed explenation, finally ext mic that is great
What camera are you used for this video?
Panasonic GH5 used here
So, if I find it more important with great photo quality than videographing, I should go with G5 X Mark II?
But how does Chris feel about the grip?
A very able tool, the G5XmkII is always with me.
Haha at the intro! 😂
I feel like the lens is worse than the zeiss counterpart on the sony rx100v. From some sample images online the edges seem to be quite soft and the background blur looks often pretty bad, too. Could anyone confirm that?
Because of heavy distortion correction, if you check raw file
God that intro...
love the mark ii. thinking about getting the iii? i love canon.
Can anyone help me?? I just got this camera but whenever I take a selfie or try to take a video its comes out mirrored?? Does anyone know how to cancel this?
Great video folks, what lens is at 9:32 ?
Sami This whole episode was shot on the PanaLeica 10-25mm F1.7, my new favourite video lens
@@thatjordandrake Thanks for your reply !!!
Which finger to you use for the grip? 😂 😮
i still can't pick in between both of them... help me!!!!
So those mini cameras get crop less 4K and 1080p120 while my eos r is not capable of this? Maybe with the next firmware update...
Getting 4k from a 1 inch sensor is way different than getting 4k from a full frame sensor.
Is the camera sealed against dust?
They’re not gonna want this once I’m done with it 🤣
Does anyone knows something about a possible G7X Mark 4? When they are gonna release it? I saw some rumors on the web that it may be coming sooner than expected. :))
Hi guys, my compliment for all your videos really professional and funny ;-)
I am stuck in the decision to buy the Sony RX100 VII and the Canon GX5 II for taking picture.
I really like the possibility to have a longer Zoom, but I also think that Canon with bigger apertur from 1.8 could be much better for picture.
Which one you cam recon to me ?
Thank you so much for your time
Filippo :-D
The only use for touch shutter is for macros with shallow depth of field...
Ouch! That hurt! For macro a touch shutter is way too shaky - at least it is for me. I need either a viewfinder so that I can support the camera with my forehead to be able to hold it steady, or even better, a tripod where I do not even touch the camera to take the picture - i.e. I use either the self-timer or a remote.
@@skakdosmer Oh don't worry, I turn off the touch shutter on my mobile too. I don't do it for myself. LOL
LOL
I solemnly swear that I shall never use such a questionable technique!
(Besides, a smartphone being the ergonomic disaster that it is, I only use its camera in emergencies).
Have you tried using update 1.1.0?
www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/cameras/point-and-shoot-digital-cameras/advanced-cameras/powershot-g5-x-mark-ii?subtab=downloads-firmware
●Mode 1 (newly added, with firmware version 1.1.0): This mode supports quick and responsive autofocus.
At 2:38, it's 'where your thumb LIES', not 'lays'.
Great review, thanks.
Shiznuts hmmm I have yet to experience any overheating from any of my cameras tbh!
Did you update to the latest firmware?
I wish they would just add Dual Pixel AF on the G5 X, along with a microphone jack, even if they had to stick an extra hundred quid on the price. And the subsampled 4K will affect low-light performance a lot - even people happy with 3K quality still want good high ISO. I'm not sure how they are subsampling, but if they are only using 3840 of the 5472 horizontal pixels and doing the same vertically then they're only using 50% of the usable pixels of the sensor!
Best Cam > G3 X . I hope they will update this small Bridgecam
Jordan's right, the live streaming feature takes a while to get set up. Here's a video explaining how to do it:
th-cam.com/video/AddB5ZMhMuo/w-d-xo.html
Is that Calgary? Looks familiar 😊
are these ricoh GR competitors?
if your thinking the GR3 which I have been just looking at (& I can't afford that's why I'm trying to find a reason to like the XF10 instead), that is an APS-C sensor coupled to a prime lens.
@@gilean6179 I get the GRs are prime and these are zoom, but both have fast lenses in a compact body. That is the market I that came to mind. You don't get a lot of compact lenses (prime or zoom) with apertures faster than f2.8 typically.
Color grading on this video tho!
The GX7 video is outstanding. Can clearly and vividly pick up a whitehead pimple at 10 feet.
2:51 the thing on his ear
ummm sorry i got caught in his eye,, sooo ,yeahh.. hhaaa
