Why Kanamo is a Great Alternative to Stok Kangri | Indiahikes

  • Many people are enamoured by the altitude of Stok Kangri. But there is a lesser known peak in Spiti called Kanamo Peak, which is almost at the same altitude. In this video, Arjun Majumdar, who has climbed to Stok Kangri, explores his thoughts on why Kanamo is a great alternative to Stok Kangri.
    The Kanamo Peak looms behind Kibber and Tashi Gang villages, hidden away at the heart of Spiti. This is a region of Spiti that is still untouched by modernity, unperturbed by civilization. Which makes this trek quieter, prettier and an equally challenging alternative to Stok Kangri. Stok Kangri has been unfortunately commercialised.
    At the summit, you see a view that is something you see out of an airline. Standing at what seems like the top of the world, you see over 35 other summits from Ladakh, Spiti, Kullu and Kinnaur. It is a 360-degree view of equally high mountains. The Shilla Peak, Kanamo’s sister peak is so close, you can almost reach out and feel it. Standing on top of this summit is a gift.

    My first ever trekking is to Kanamo...this year, August. I am not fittest (barely fit, you can say)..... But, guys.... metal toughness and will power is what you need most. Situation awareness and patience will make up for your fitness...... It is hard but not impossible....

    Kanamo peak is better than Stok Kangri BECAUSE - Indiahikes has been banned from operating in Ladakh region. This is the truth.

      With all due respect sir, i am pretty sure it's not(i am not affiliated with Indiahikes).If i am wrong ,could you please tell me why IH is not allowed in the Ladakh region?
      Thankyou :)

      Hello Tejas
      I came to know about the ban when I went on my Chadar trek. I think the issues are - Indiahikes takes too big groups which leaves the camping site filthy and disgusting. The local tourist operator has banned IH and not any government agency.
      You yourself can check it as IH does not organize Chadar and Stok Kangri trek.

      Hi, thanks for informing me.I was just thinking,if the local tourist operators have banned them and not the government itself,then that means they have been barred unlawfully no?

    • @hiteshaggarwal8209
      @hiteshaggarwal8209 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not about whether they are barred legally or otherwise.... But they are not operating in Ladakh region as of now. They might have done something against the interest of local people or environment. Otherwise, why would Ladakhis object to IH.
      Sometimes, you have to take care of local people as well. It is they who have preserved the nature for so long and outsiders like us cannot just take over their treasure arbitrarily.

    trek organisations like yours are responsible for the UK court order .How u can create permanent campsite at every location .Do you own those places? 3 out of 5 points of thecourt are related to permanent structure .

    I like what you guys are doing with putting a spotlight on the less famous treks in the Himalayas.
    .. Makes business sense for you as well to market them, since most people are still choosing popular treks based on word of mouth instead of actual research leading to a demand-supply mismatch in the treks you offer.

    • @indicrenaissance8126
      @indicrenaissance8126 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please explain why you said that?

    • @IshaniMehta
      @IshaniMehta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@indicrenaissance8126 Unfortunately a lot of trekkers don't do research before choosing a trek. It is a decision based purely on what someone else in their network might have said - the coolness factor, FOMO, and peer pressure are bigger determinants. As a result everyone would flock to say Kedarkantha or KGL or Hampta pass leading to a lot of human footprint on these slopes, while other equally beautiful, challenging and appealing slopes remain unexplored. Putting a spotlight on these alternatives would hopefully ensure more distributed trekking footprint across the Himalayas and reduce the ecological pressure on the hotspots.

    WTF..... Stok kangri is very challenging trek you know.. How would you know because India hike were banded in ladakh.

    • @Indiahikes
      @Indiahikes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to clarify things, we are not banned from Ladakh. We stepped out of Ladakh voluntarily. You can read about it here - indiahikes.com/what-is-happening-in-ladakh-is-not-okay/
      It was in the news back in 2014 when it happened. The case is still in the court. Take a look at the news report here - timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Tour-operators-extort-Ladakh-trekkers-hikers/articleshow/42672313.cms
