Woolen sweters should be avoided when you are trekking. You must carry a goretex jacket which is a double jacket ( fleece inside and waterproof and wind proof outside). The down jacket (padded jacket)should be worn in a dry cold weather or if you are indoors. Never wear a down jacket in wet weather. For tshirt, carry polyester tshirts which dries quickly. Avoid cotton tshirts because they dont dry quickly and can be very uncomfortable when you sweat while hiking. Drink plenty of water on the trek. Eat well during the trek. Avoid alcohol beverages during the trek.
I am not so sure about this. Many people wear merino clothes and these works better than synthetic, also all first mountaineers were using woolen clothes.

I would just add that taking an umbrella along would be useful and convenient. When you are in camp and it is raining (it often does) and you need to go only from your tent to the dining tent, an umbrella is way more convenient than a poncho first in using and then on drying it out. Then even while trekking if it is raining, it may be helpful in keeping dryer for the umbrella to take the first blow of the rain, and let the poncho deal with the residue. Though i would agree this depends if you have your hands free or not. It is quite convenient to carry. One can easily fit it onto the top of the backpack you are carrying. I have done 2 Himalayan treks with Indiahikes and looking back the umbrella is one gear i would think of adding.
I really enjoy all your videos ...however I feel there are a lot of things here that needs to be clarified ...such as, no cotton on mountain please, it tends to get wet from sweat and freezes you from inside, always always carry water wicking materials. For higher altitudes SPF 40 wont work ... Poncho is practical yes but rarely effective in high winds...Nalgene water bottles !!! ....Gaiters, did we forget to mention them? having said that i don't want to sound too critical because this is a very informative video for beginners.
Does Indiahikes provide tent and sleeping bags as well? They are a must in any kind of trek where there is a chance of rain or snow. You need a properly rated sleeping bag for the time of the year you are going for the trek. You also need a properly ventilated tent with rainfly attached so that you can rest inside it in the case of rain or snowfall. Most of all, you need good quality shoes since they can make or break your trip. Don't take sports or running shoes for the trek in the Himalayas as they would rub off easily and they won't have a good grip in the snow and definitely won't be waterproof. Also, you need to carry some sort of food and maybe a portable stove if you can't find a place to eat. I am not sure about the Himalayan treks but treks here in the US can lead to a wilderness where there won't be any stall, hotel, dhaba, etc. So I carry a portable gas stove as small as a cigarette lighter which I attach to a small propane cylinder and boil water from it to cook instant noodles or oats. Best of luck to everyone going for a trek and be safe.
I have been carrying everything else and luckily, I have not experienced rain, but I am planning to buy a poncho soon for my monsoon trek. Thanks for the informative video.
Extremely informative video. I've been recently drawn into trekking after my Gorson Bugyal mini trekking experience. This was the exact thing I was looking for. Great vid, thanks! Keep it up!
Temperature matters only when you're static, once you start trekking the need for clothes changes. Wearing too much will cause discomfort. I don't recommend wearing fleece as first layers as it's gets sweaty inside while trekking and creates discomfort. I use sports tshirt, fleece (maybe 2), waterproof trekking jacket for top and sports lower, thermal followed by trek pant (can be adjusted according to temperature or your trekking speed) for bottom. Eating right things will also help you maintaining your energy and body temperature. Avoid craps like maggie.
You will need to carry it till the end. :) Keep your backpack light, weighing just about 7-8 kilos. Wear your backpack right and you will not feel the weight of it. If you have excess luggage, then perhaps you can leave it behind at a hotel in Shimla, where you're staying.
A poncho is a joke. Thigh length Goretex jackets are the only sane option for the Himalaya. If I told people to wear a poncho ski touring in winter in th e Australian Alps I would be laughed at .
Great video! It would be nice if you made a video specifically for the type of boots you need for different types fo treks. Boots are after all one of the most important things in a trek :).
Absolute delight to watch. All the required information imparted in easy to understand manner. The only thing, I didn't understand is why did she advocate for regular underwear and no boxers for men? Hello team Indiahikes. Please make a video about to keep ourselves safe during trek by wild animals. e. g. Leopard in hilly area or snakes in western ghatt treks or bears in Himalayas etc. I want to know about safety policy of Indian hikes too. I want to do a family trek in the month of October-22. Hi, Swathi! I am going on the Kedarkantha trek during March with you guys. Can you please tell me what gloves you are showing here? The waterproof ones I seem to find online are way too expensive!
Hi Pratik the ones I have in this video are from the USA. However, you can go for something like these - www.decathlon.in/p/8229532_quechua-bionnassay-1000-adult-waterproof-hiking-gloves-black.html#/12-200-m. You get other basic skiing gloves also that will work.
and not to forget to carry your friendly mobile network router if possible in case of emergency my friend. You wont know what can go wrong from your side..
Hi Bishak, if you are trekking with Indiahikes, you will be provided with the sleeping bags (as seen in the video). They are custom made to withstand the negative temperatures you face at high altitude. You will not have to carry a sleeping bag. There will be sleeping bags at every campsite. You will be given a liner of your own in the beginning of the trek that you will use first and then get into the sleeping bag - this is to maintain hygiene.
Thank you, great video, very useful! Just a question: in a homestay trekking, shall I bring with me my own sleeping bag or would they provide me some blankets? tks!
It depends on where you're going. But almost at all home stays, they give you blankets. But for hygiene purposes, we recommend carrying a fleece liner or a light sleeping bag that your can get into and then put on a blanket.
@@Indiahikes Thank you!! I'm planning to hike the Markha Valley Trekking, I hope they have blankets as you suggested, so as to avoid the weight of a sleeping bag

Hi Surjayan, it's wonderful that you're planning the Goechala trek in autumn. It is the best season to do the trek! On the trek, you can take a 55-60 L backpack. That will do. Just want to evaluate if I have overloaded my 70L backpack beyond its capacity..!.. looking forward to a quick response. :-)
The kgs a 70 litre bag can hold will depend on what you load it with .. eg. if you carry jeans on your hike it will be heavier than if you carried polyester stuff .. anyway while 10-12 kgs is a good weight to carry on your own .. hired porters usually carry upto 20 kgs (in my experience)..
Dear Swathi, can you please give the buying links or, at least, the brand/model names of the trekking essentials (shoes, rucksack, jackets, backpack, sticks, poncho etc) you think best in you descriptions? A beginner like me doesn’t know which are the most effective and durable ones! Please, give me a link of such lists of links if u have any.
Hi Atanu, Decathlon is a one stop shop for all your trekking essentials. Adventure Worx have great backpacks. On the other hand if you're a first timer, we always recommend renting gear so that you can try it out and see what works for you.
Yes, we do have that option at an added fee. However, we do encourage our trekkers to carry their own backpacks because that is the true spirit of trekking! :)
this is our production house,owner- sandeep juyal....this ia the recent video of kedarkantha...due to lapi issue time has been changed...dont worrywe are group f professional trekkers and pro photograpjher,,,,,you can visit empty bag
This is too much work.Just carry essentials to keep yourself warm, dry fruits and chikki to give you energy throughout the day and a raincoat because it usually rains in the afternoon . I have never met a regular trekker so concerned about flip flops.😏

Decathlon is a one stop shop for all your trekking essentials. Adventure Worx have great backpacks. On the other hand if you're a first timer, we always recommend renting gear so that you can try it out and see what works for you.
