    Carrying a backpack on a trek is not difficult, if you know how to keep it light and comfortable. For that, you should know exactly what to pack in it.
    The first thing to keep in mind is not to pack for "if" situations. "If it rains, all my clothes are going to get wet. Surely, I must carry spare clothes?" Well, no. Use a poncho instead, to cover yourself and the bag. Your clothes will be dry and so will you! Swathi gives you a list of what exactly to pack on a high-altitude trek, to ensure your bag doesn't weigh more than 8-9 kg.
    You need to know how to pack these clothes efficiently in a backpack. Here, these videos and articles will help you.

    Woolen sweters should be avoided when you are trekking. You must carry a goretex jacket which is a double jacket ( fleece inside and waterproof and wind proof outside). The down jacket (padded jacket)should be worn in a dry cold weather or if you are indoors. Never wear a down jacket in wet weather. For tshirt,carry polyester tshirts which dries quickly. Avoid cotton tshirts because they dont dry quickly and can be very uncomfortable when you sweat while hiking. Drink plenty of water on the trek. Eat well during the trek. Avoid alcohol beverages during the trek.

      I am not so sure about this. Many people wear merino clothes and these works better than synthetic, also all first mountaineers were using woolen clothes.

    I would just add that taking an umbrella along would be useful and convenient.
    When you are in camp and it is raining (it often does) and you need to go only from your tent to the dining tent, an umbrella is way more convenient than a poncho first in using and then on drying it out.
    Then even while trekking if it is raining, it may be helpful in keeping dryer for the umbrella to take the first blow of the rain, and let the poncho deal with the residue. Though i would agree this depends if you have your hands free or not.
    It is quite convenient to carry. One can easily fit it onto the top of the backpack you are carrying.
    I have done 2 Himalayan treks with Indiahikes and looking back the umbrella is one gear i would think of adding.

    I really enjoy all your videos ...however I feel there are a lot of things here that needs to be clarified ...such as, no cotton on mountain please, it tends to get wet from sweat and freezes you from inside, always always carry water wicking materials. For higher altitudes SPF 40 wont work ... Poncho is practical yes but rarely effective in high winds...Nalgene water bottles !!! ....Gaiters, did we forget to mention them? having said that i don't want to sound too critical because this is a very informative video for beginners.

    hey what about tent and sleeping bag ?
    where to keep them ? @indiahikes

  • @PrashantSingh-nd8vu
    @PrashantSingh-nd8vu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Does Indiahikes provide tent and sleeping bags as well? They are a must in any kind of trek where there is a chance of rain or snow. You need a properly rated sleeping bag for the time of the year you are going for the trek. You also need a properly ventilated tent with rainfly attached so that you can rest inside it in the case of rain or snowfall. Most of all, you need good quality shoes since they can make or break your trip. Don't take sports or running shoes for the trek in the Himalayas as they would rub off easily and they won't have a good grip in the snow and definitely won't be waterproof. Also, you need to carry some sort of food and maybe a portable stove if you can't find a place to eat. I am not sure about the Himalayan treks but treks here in the US can lead to a wilderness where there won't be any stall, hotel, dhaba, etc. So I carry a portable gas stove as small as a cigarette lighter which I attach to a small propane cylinder and boil water from it to cook instant noodles or oats. Best of luck to everyone going for a trek and be safe.

      It depends on where you're going. But almost at all home stays, they give you blankets. But for hygiene purposes, we recommend carrying a fleece liner or a light sleeping bag that your can get into and then put on a blanket.

      Hi Surjayan, it's wonderful that you're planning the Goechala trek in autumn. It is the best season to do the trek! On the trek, you can take a 55-60 L backpack. That will do. Wildcraft has some good rucksacks. You can take a look at those. Make sure the backpack suits your height and is sturdy and well-balanced. This article will help you choose the right backpack - indiahikes.com/choose-right-backpack-trek/
      As for shoes, go for something with good grip and high ankle support. The Forclaz series by Decathlon has good shoes.

    • @Indiahikes

      You will need to carry it till the end. :) Keep your backpack light, weighing just about 7-8 kilos. Wear your backpack right and you will not feel the weight of it. If you have excess luggage, then perhaps you can leave it behind at a hotel in Shimla, where you're staying.

      @swathichatrapathy9347 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Darshan those should would be fine for the trek. But they are not available at Sankri right now. We have moved away from the slope because it is peak winter and doing the trek is extremely difficult until March. We have the shoes at Lohajung only as of now. So you might have to pick up another pair of trekking shoes.

    Hi swathi, i cannot wear sunglasses as I wear glasses, so are there any alternatives for sunglasses
    ?

    • @swathichatrapathy9347
      @swathichatrapathy9347 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Venkat, you have two options - one is to get sunglasses that fit over your prescription glasses. The other is to get sunglasses custom-made according to your power. The first option would be a cheaper and easier option I'd say. You find such glasses pretty easily online.

      Just use a Clipper Sun glass, which can be clipped on Regular spectacles. I bought one from Decathlon store. I hate wearing two glasses, it's so uncomfortable

    Temperature matters only when you're static, once you start trekking the need for clothes changes. Wearing too much will cause discomfort. I don't recommend wearing fleece as first layers as it's gets sweaty inside while trekking and creates discomfort. I use sports tshirt, fleece (maybe 2), waterproof trekking jacket for top and sports lower, thermal followed by trek pant (can be adjusted according to temperature or your trekking speed) for bottom.
    Eating right things will also help you maintaining your energy and body temperature. Avoid craps like maggie.

    Hi Swathi, could you explain me in brief about how we are going to sleep ? Do we need to carry a sleeping bag ?

    • @swathichatrapathy9347
      @swathichatrapathy9347 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Bishak, if you are trekking with Indiahikes, you will be provided with the sleeping bags (as seen in the video). They are custom made to withstand the negative temperatures you face at high altitude. You will not have to carry a sleeping bag. There will be sleeping bags at every campsite. You will be given a liner of your own in the beginning of the trek that you will use first and then get into the sleeping bag - this is to maintain hygiene.

    Hi Swathi.. thanks for the informative video.Please help out with information..are sunglasses required should necessarily be of category 4 or polarised cat 2 are sufficient for high altitude snow trek ?

    • @swathichatrapathy1058
      @swathichatrapathy1058 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Manas, cat 2 will be sufficient. Most trekkers wear the most basic sunglasses and make do with it. Unless you're spending days together camping and trekking in snow, you don't have to worry too much. On most 16,000-ers you'll see snow only on one or two days of the trek. It's not much of a worry.
