I’ve been using TH-cam since it’s creation and never felt the need to comment until now. This is the best explanation I’ve come across hands down. I was always a little confused about the wahl guards and now I feel like an idiot. Thanks for taking the time to clear things up for us.
Mike Green now I stand by this comment he explains it with detail. Gosh this guy is good, just when you think you wouldn’t understand it he comes this guy explains it for he “barber dummies.
Thank you for your great explanation. From this I have gleaned the following and have put it here for easy reference for everyone: Wahl Blending Clipper Lengths: Closed lever: 0 (shortest) Open lever: +0.5 (same as half guard) With #0.5 guard (i.e. 'half guard') + lever half open: Gives 0.75 cut With #0.5 guard (i.e. 'half guard') + lever full open: Gives 1.0 cut (same as 1 guard with lever closed) With #1 guard + lever half open: Gives 1.25 cut With #1 guard + lever full open: Gives 1.5 cut (same as 1.5 guard with lever closed) With #1.5 guard + lever half open: Gives 1.75 cut With #1.5 guard + lever full open: Gives 2.0 cut (same as 2 guard with lever closed) With #2 guard + lever half open: Gives 2.25 cut With #2 guard + lever full open: Gives 2.5 cut (same as 2.5 guard with lever closed) Thumbs up if you agree!
Best guard tutorial on youtube! I learned how to fade myself by replaying the video over and over while cutting my hair. The explanation between the half guard (1/16th of an inch) and the #2 (1/4th of an inch) is extremely helpful.
U have the best video on TH-cam to explain the guards and how to fade. I finally understand what I have been doing wrong with my boys’ home hair cuts! Thank you!
I have to say I’ve been watching TH-cam tutorials for sometime now. I have to say hands down this video not only explains the Wahl Guards system for beginners to the “T” but in my opinion the best tutorial video I have come across on TH-cam so far! 👏 nice work
The explanation and detail of the guards is completely hands down the best tutorial video ever honestly barbering is a side job to me for now until I’m better at it but this really help man thanks
Thank you for explaining this in clear, plain English. I was really struggling with this and all the other videos never took the time to fully explain it or they were really vague about it.

I think this is the best tutorial on Clipper Guards here on TH-cam, thanks for the detailed explanation 😎. It cleared my Doubts about Blades and guards and its adjustments.
Awesome video. You are the first person I found that makes this easy to understand. I have wondered about this for quite awhile and could never find the answer. Thank you so much. I hope you have a great day!
Thank you so much! I’m coming from the Andis Masters to Wahl 5* Seniors. They came with a 1 1/2 guard. I use my zero guard which is a half guard in these, but the 1 1/2 threw my brain in a frenzy. I was like waaaaaait huh? You explained it so well! Thank you so much! 🙏🏽 just ordered a 10 piece premium guard set for them!
Great video! I've always liked only using the #1,2,3,4 and doing the rest with my clippers. This has me rethinking it. Without the 1/16 guard theres a gap!
Thank You So Much for making this video... I was struggling trying to find out how to use the wahl guard system .... this video right here just clicked & made sense.... thank you Brutha
Great video brother, I was trying to visualize the usage of these guards and now seeing it on paper and your explanation makes it clear. Thanks again for the great post!
Thank you for conveying your tutorial in a way any of us can easily understand, I found this very useful. Im Going to practice opening the lever at the desire angle to properly use the 1/2 guards and not have to be switching them all the time when I fade
Good explanation, one thing I found out as well is that the Wahl guards come in 2 different widths as well. The cheaper 'home cutting' clippers have a narrower blade compared to the 'professional' clippers. The narrow guards for these will not fit on the 'professional' clippers with the wider blade, but the wide guards fit OK on the narrower 'home' clippers, as I found out myself lately when upgrading to a Magic clip cordless from some cheap £10 'Homecut' Wahl clippers.
So you covered very well how the lever works. What is the way you actually do the fade? If you start from the top and do a 7 all over, then you want to start going down in grades around the back and sides, should you start with it in the closed position and open it up when you fade? Or should you open it up first and then close it to fade? This is not clear to me.
Ivan tho I have a pretty good understanding of these guards, you helped clear it up even more. My one complaint and idea that I have, is that sometimes i wish I could have my #1 & #2 guards to have shorter combs like the half guard! To me, that'd help me on bland and fades
Great explanation. A little confusing reading it. But I just played with my clips while your explaining it. Fully understand it now. Thanks. I need some nappy heads to cut now.
Fantastic explanation of the impact of the Lever adjustment on the comb and cut length. thank you. now i'm clear if i want a 3mm cut, it's comb 1 on lever closed (0). if i want a 4.5mm cut it's comb 1 and lever full open!
Good explanation. After watching a few videos, I think I got it down now. What I get from this is that you want to first make the line in the hair so as to make it straight. Then you go back a half a step shorter (or between the 2 cuts that make the line) and blend out the line. Being careful not to screw up.
Hi. thanks for the great video instruction. i'm a woman and keen to cut my hair with a 4 on the sides fading to an 8 on top. Do you have a video like this?
Aye man this video actually got my haircuts to the next level🙏🙏🙏i still got a long way to go but thanks for taking the time to help the young barbers out there
@@joshhoward8558 i noticed my old amazon wahl clippers didnt have them, but my wahl seniors did. I think they dont put them in some of the cheaper ones. I ended up buying some from a sallys supply store and they worked well. One thing to remember is that the 1.5 doesnt always fit right tho
Crystal clear explanation Sir! I have the cordless Wahl Senior, which came up with only the 3 shortest premium guards, and your demo helps, hence my warm thanks. Best of luck Sir!
Is you clipper zero gapped, does it need to be zero gapped in order to give you the true measurements or how does zero gapping affect the guards. Thanks
just bought Andis clippers at $48 and cut my own hair watching videos . Not bad then took shower and saw it a lil thicker on one side than the other and went over it again . Pretty good now . Cut it a lil longer at a 3 when I went to barber had him cut it to a 2 . But was verry happy I cut it . It was driving me nuts .
What are there lengths in centimeters and cm pls tell, i do not know inches and also this guards are Wahl guards I think can it fit in gemmy clippers, thank you sir
Maybe I'm just thick, but to me this was a lesson in arithmetic. What do the numbers mean as far a my hair is concerned? Does a 1" guard cut my hair 1" long and a 1/2 inch guard cut it 1/2" from my scalp?
That’s what I’m kinda tryna figure out too . The lever open is basically half way so I would usually just use a guard that’s equivalent to half so to blend from 1 to 2 I would use 1 1/2 and play with the lever a bit. Open cut less Close cuts more so I would start with lever open then slowly close till lines goes away. That half guard between the number will probably do the job of getting rid of line tho if not u would most likely just have to play with lever
One of my favorite things in life is listening to someone who really knows what they are talking about. This was up there

Wahl Blending Clipper Lengths:

With #0.5 guard (i.e. 'half guard') + lever full open: Gives 1.0 cut (same as 1 guard with lever closed)
With #1 guard + lever half open: Gives 1.25 cut
With #1 guard + lever full open: Gives 1.5 cut (same as 1.5 guard with lever closed)
With #1.5 guard + lever half open: Gives 1.75 cut
With #1.5 guard + lever full open: Gives 2.0 cut (same as 2 guard with lever closed)
With #2 guard + lever half open: Gives 2.25 cut
With #2 guard + lever full open: Gives 2.5 cut (same as 2.5 guard with lever closed)
