Thank you for this so much man. In barber school on my third week and everything is mad confusing. You're the only dude that has made a video explaining this clearly. Thanks again
Hey Andrew quick question, are you attending barber school in California ? If so are they also making you dying first for 200 hours and then actually go to the barber class ?
imRamel thank you for watching the video! Glad I can help. A lot of it will come from just practicing using the guards and being comfortable with them. I’ll have a new tutorial dropping soon so stay tuned!

Jesus Christ finally a decent and productive well executed explained video thank you so much man you’re literally the only one who’s cleared lots of minds on this matter
Wow man I'm impressed with your poise for teaching, humor, organization and clarity. Keep it up! I'm a teacher and this is how you teach kids from scratch when you want them to learn. Keep going! I needed this! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This video is underated like crazy. I dont even know how to cut hair yet but in the process of learning and this broke it down so simply. I understood super clearly. Thank you man so much. This is insanely dumb-a-fide down man 🙏💯
Bro thank you so much. I'm glad that I can help out. I really tried to break it down in a way that I wish someone broke down for me when I was first learning. Thank you for watching and supporting!
I had to watch it like 3 times but you kept saying it and I just all of a sudden got it 😂 I started cutting hair yesterday man. I got some babyliss clippers too 🙏🏼
I am a rookie when it comes to men's cut and this really helps a lot. 😘 I'm actually struggling and puzzled about what the lever means and how to use a guard. Now it's getting clear. Thank you so much.!
Thank you my man. This has been so helpful to me and learning to cut my own hair. This is the area that I was so confused about. Understanding something is so wonderful. Thank you brother 😩
@@thephoenixbarber4435 thanks brother I appreciate that. Could you please help me out with something if you don't mind. If I use a 5 for keeping my hair high on the top and I use a 1/2 half guard on my sides high fade how do I blend the top with the side? Your hope will be greatly appreciated. By the way my hair is like thick Mexican type. Thanks
Great job explaining the differences between the different clippers and congrats on hitting 1k viewers. To get more views make sure to ask people to like the video and subscribe if they got any value from it. Also, asking a question in your video for people to respond/comment down below helps your engagement with your audience and it helps the TH-cam algorithm.
Thank you for watching and supporting. Thank you! It was a long road to 1K but well worth it and I am excited for the future and the direction of this channel. I really appreciate the feedback. I'll definitely keep this in mind moving forward with future videos. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the help. I would like to ask a question that crossed my mind whilst watching the video. If we say for example that a 1 guard closed is 1 and 1 open is 1 and a half, why would we need another guard to our set when we can just open the lever. The same goes for the half guard.
because you still have a gap from the #1 guard open and the #2 guard close. Same goes for no blade open and #1 guard closed. The detail in-between those guards are crucial when creating a blurry fade
Thank you this helped to give me an idea what to use I try to do my son's hair he doesn't do well at a place I'd rather deal with it at home and if i leave it up to hubby he would just completely shave everything off and that's a no go for me 🤣.
I was told since the 1 guard open is 1 1/2 to only use the 3/16 guard in the halfway position with the lever. And the same with the 0 guard. I see a lot of barbers just open close. Those guards were designed to fill the gap by using the lever in the halfway position ?
I have two questions, 1) If the blade by itself when fully opened is a "half," then what is a "half?" Is it a half-inch? 2) Then with the blade fully opened with each guard then you add a half-inch to each guard even the number #8 guard which would be an 8.5 guard? Thank you.
Hey bro, thanks for the awesome tutorial. One question though, why is a 0 guard open (1/16 inch) considered a 1? I thought when you open the teeth of any guard it would add 1/2 ( 1/16 + 1/2 = 9/16)??
Thank you for watching, that is a very good question I can see where the confusion is coming from. I should've clarified this in my video and for that I apologize. Most commonly in the barber world the word "half" is in reference to 1/16. So when I say "the clipper with the lever open is a half" I mean it is 1/16. So when you add the zero guard on or the 1/16th guard and close the lever it is 1/16th of an inch. When you open the lever it becomes equivalent to the #1 guard which is 1/8th. Because 1/16th + 1/16th = 2/16th or 1/8th. I hope this helps clear up the confusion! If you have any other questions about the barber industry or tools please ask them here: forms.gle/hB3p2F6kCR89AuBi8 I'm going to be making a Q and A video once I get enough questions in
Thanks, these videos are very useful and easy to follow, much needed! Question, what’s the point of having a specific guard for 1.5 when this can be achieved simply by opening the lever on #1? Or have I missed something?
It helps with making the blend transition between the #1 and #2 very smooth. You dont "need" it if you have your technique down but it does help alot. and everyones hair fades differently. opening the #1 lever doesn't open directly into the #2 with the Wahl clippers. It opens up to a 3/16 instead of 4/16 which is the #2 guard or 2/8th. remember opening the lever only adds 1/16th
Damn I had a gaurd that was a 000 it blended that zero gap right on out that .5 Don't do it u still gotta have that barbers eye and skillz i lost it moving
So to fully understand this...I have 6 guards. No6. Says 3/4 and 19mm. Which means it will cut 3/4 inch or 19mm of hair in the open or closed postion.. and the no.1 guard says 1/8 and 3mm which will cut 1/8 or 3mm inch of hair in the open/closed position. I know I can't yet remember which is open and which is closed yet
And second question..which will cut more hair? Open or closed? .....closed right? Since it's closest to the skin?...I never thought a freaking hair clipper can be so complicated 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You could, although you have to make sure to get the C-motion (circular motion) flick down. That’s how you’re going to get that line out between the #1 and #2 if you don’t use the #1 1/2 guard
when you're doing it yourself. The sides shouldn't be too hard. it's the back and then the top will be the challenge for many. But then again with most currently out of work. Any mistakes can be covered with wearing a hat when going out.
I completely agree with you. It's always that blend going into the top of the hair that makes it really challenging depending on the haircut you want. Although, like you said if you mess up just go out with a hat lol
Hello! Thank you for watching and supporting. so whenever you open the lever on these Wahl clippers it'll add 1/16th of an inch. Which in the video I'm referring to as a half. The #0 guard or 1/16th guard is sometimes referred to as a half in the barber world. So when you have the #0 guard attached to your clippers and you open the lever (farthest away from the blade) you are adding 1/16 + 1/16 = 2/16 or 1/8. Since the #1 guard is 1/8th of an inch the #0 guard with the lever open is equivalent to the #1 guard. I know I should've explained this a little bit more in the video but lessons learned. Hope this helps!
Thanks for explaining this so dummy proof bro xD i'm from europe we don't use inches here, But this made me understand it. I was looking on TH-cam and Google allot for guides, This is by far the best one
Hello thank you for watching and supporting! You are correct! Having the 0 guard closed is the same as having no guard with the lever open. they are both at 1/16.
ThePhoenixBarber so why do they call it a zero guard when in reality its a half guard im confused .. because basically u already have a half guard on the clipper without actually having the guard on it u get what im saying?
Thanks a lot for the video. How about the wahl ear taper guards? What's their size range (the ear taper gards starts from #1 1/2 or #2?)? There's no information about these guards... :(
ahmad deserto thanks for watching and supporting. Unfortunately you can not adjust the sound. I know the Wahl shaver is pretty loud. I’ve been using the Babyliss shaver in my tool kit and that one is much quieter and works better in my opinion compared to the Wahl and Andis shavers
So why have a 0 or 1.5 guard if you can use the lever (with no guard or the 1 guard)? I'm wondering because I want to learn to cut my own hair and I am wondering if I need these guards.
I have a phillips norelco multigroom 5000 and it comes with 4 guards 21/32in(16 mm),15/32in(12 mm),3/8in(9 mm), and 5/32in(4 mm) how would these compare to the guards you mentioned when it comes to trying to fade
Why are the “teeth“ so long? The clipper guard that you say is an inch… Those teeth are way longer, and I don’t understand what the point of the teeth are, considering the hairs will fall down in between them, and get cut off by the same blades on the clipper. The blades on the clipper are always in the same spot so I don’t understand how any clipper guards work really…
Thanks that was so helpful and a success for my portfolio including all INFORMATICS shared then only one thing left is now acknowledged criteria of lengths because the eye witness que as multiple intelligences array visually then last statement registered the inches as perfected and of courses the levers INCLUSIONARY fundamentals acts upon visually mathematics. Thanks .
Isn’t the Andis system a little different. Like if the 0 guard is open it would be a 1? Then if you have the 1 guard on, then it would open to a 2 or no? Then the 2 guard opens up to a 3 etc.?
Hell yeah, if you have any questions about getting into the industry please don't hesitate to ask! I am a certified instructor and can help you out with anything you need
i have a question... i have Wahl Color Pro clipper and lately i was cutting myself with 1,5 length (1 guard + full open position) and 2 guard ... and still transition line is visible ... is this clipper problem or i have done something wrong ...
So with the Wahl system it is important to have the 0.5 guard and the 1.5 guard when youre starting out. Use these guards in your next haircut and you should be able to blend those line out. Also make sure you are using the C motion flick as well. Hope this helps! Thank you for supporting
Daniel Fregoso what I’m teaching in this video is the Wahl and Babyliss guard system. Those brands use this system with half guards #0 and #1 1/2. The Andis and Oster don’t have the #1 1/2 guard in their system. If you are just getting into Barbering and want a recommendation then use the kit I explain in the videos on my TH-cam page. If you want a more expensive clipper for beginners that use this system I would recommend the BabylissPro Fx clippers because it has notches on the side to help keep track of where you are with your fade.
Daniel Fregoso of course I’m glad I could help! Do you mind posting any / all questions you have here? I’m using these to play into my next Q and A video: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf7GJdgOJ59TkA_wTAvbm4QKhoVVGI21XFYoDLmlQr72AK-7A/viewform
I just got my new one, but i have a problem with taking of the guards , i have to pull verry hard otherwise they wont come out, do i neee to take them out in a specific way?
It’s going to be a 2 and a half. So you need to flick out the blend using the circular motion or C-Motion technique. In order to blend straight into the 3 seamlessly
Great video brother! May I know what should I do to get a similar effect of .5 if the clipper I bought doesn't have this "open close" lever feature? It's a budget model called Xiaomi Enchen.
Thank you for watching and supporting! I am not too sure on the clipper you have. It is probably not a fading clipper on which my video is directed towards since it does not have a lever to adjust the blade.

Isn’t the Andis system a little different. Like if the 0 guard is open it would be a 1? Then if you have the 1 guard on, then it would open to a 2 or no? Then the 2 guard opens up to a 3 etc.?
Yes! you are right on the money. I'm glad you caught on. The Andis system is different. This video is talking about the wahl system.
So you always want to start with the lever closed than move to open when blending or the other way around
And any tips and tricks to cutting own hair
And so basically 0 open and 1 closed cut the same amount...????would be very helpful if you were able to respond

i have a question... i have Wahl Color Pro clipper and lately i was cutting myself with 1,5 length (1 guard + full open position) and 2 guard ... and still transition line is visible ... is this clipper problem or
i have done something wrong ...
So with the Wahl system it is important to have the 0.5 guard and the 1.5 guard when youre starting out. Use these guards in your next haircut and you should be able to blend those line out. Also make sure you are using the C motion flick as well. Hope this helps! Thank you for supporting
So do u actually have to buy the zero and 1 and a half guards if u can just close the 1 guard and use no guard for the zero?
The video we really needed to see ! Thanks man !
Thanks for the clear explanation!
To what clipper do these guards belong to? What clipper would you recommend?
Daniel Fregoso what I’m teaching in this video is the Wahl and Babyliss guard system. Those brands use this system with half guards #0 and #1 1/2. The Andis and Oster don’t have the #1 1/2 guard in their system. If you are just getting into Barbering and want a recommendation then use the kit I explain in the videos on my TH-cam page. If you want a more expensive clipper for beginners that use this system I would recommend the BabylissPro Fx clippers because it has notches on the side to help keep track of where you are with your fade.
ThePhoenixBarber you a goat. Just want gather more information about what it takes to be a barber.

This was a great lesson thank you it helped me out a lot.
I'm glad that I could help out. Thank you for watching and supporting!
'0' guard open equal to howmuch 'mm' ,....plz reply soon.....
Lets see if I got it.. If l got the lever all the way open with# 2 guard on thats gon be 3 right?
It’s going to be a 2 and a half. So you need to flick out the blend using the circular motion or C-Motion technique. In order to blend straight into the 3 seamlessly

Like closed 2 = 6 mm
Open 2 = 6 + 1.5 =7.5 mm
Right ?
So 1.5 mm is added to open guard.
How do you reach a .5 grade then?(if it's even a grade) A 0 guard open?
