    Soo many things i say about this song. Let's begin, shall we?!!? THE... BEST... SONG... on the SOFAD album. Period. Rich, Dark, Dramatic, Terrifying, Intense, Lush. All these descriptions fit. The Live version from DEVOTIONAL... WOW! A-MAZING... The instrumentation, rich layered sampling, visuals, Dave and Martin's vocals, plus Alan on Drums! It is so layers of sampling and nuances throughout and, for me, sets an Experience (just like you said)!! It keeps building and building until you can't take it anymore! It's an Obsession. For me, the song is about relationships or a relationship, with a person/s, what have you. Not a Good One for sure and could definitely be a metaphor for Dave's drug problems at the time too. Whether to Stay or Go. Again, open for interpretation.
    One of My Top 5-Best DM Songs of All-Time
    The Album Version definitely better than the single version. BTW, at the time of the tour, Dave was heavily into drugs, and a rift between he and Alan was very evident (kind of leading him in the direction of leaving Depeche Mode, which he did in 1995). Definitely, one of Alan Wilder's best live instrumental works Ever... for Sure!!! Cheers - Joey

    I think the song is about codependency. Martin's written a few songs about that. Only when I lose myself is another. I think this is peak Depeche Mode. The best of Martin and Alan working together. The song is in a class of its own IMO. There's nothing else like it. It's like they tapped into a frequency we can't hear and then recorded it. It has that otherworldly vibe. I miss Alan in DM a lot

      @jlcmsw ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The concept behind the video was created by their longtime visual director Anton Corbijn. Everyone in Dave Gahan’s inner circle knew how bad his drug abuse was and Anton didn’t think Dave had long to live. Therefore the models in this video recreate snips of the band’s past videos. It was meant to be a tribute to Dave if he had passed away. Thankfully Dave is still around and touring right now. I believe he just turned 60.

    • @jlcmsw
      @jlcmsw ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with your interpretation of the lyrics. “Hanging on your words, living on your breath, feeling with your skin, will I always be here” describes the depth of a toxic relationship that the person knows is bad but can break free of because their partner is so intoxicating. The person is struggling between knowing this isn’t good, but also wants to stay because it feels so good. They’re torn between two paths.

    Actually, this song was the first time I watched something related with the Devotional tour. It was december of 1993 and I was walking down the "Quilca" street here in Lima-Peru, well known for its bohemian & cultural spirit, and there was a music store with this big tv playing the VHS of the concert. My mind was just blown away with the powerful scene of Alan Wilder banging those drums as if his life depended on it and like a man in a trance and then I payed attention to Dave singing & moving around and all those brilliant sounds mixed with the lyrics took a new dimension for me... that was the exact moment when I became really obsessed with Depeche Mode. 🖤

If you are interested there is a series of 'documentaries' let's say, made by the band and other collaboratores around 2006 for the 25th anniversary of the publication of Speak & Spell, in which they go through the albums in detail up until 2001 with Exciter. this is the link of the first one. ❤ th-cam.com/video/JtmiQ-r1zBs/w-d-xo.html

    When Anton filmed the video for this song, he honestly thought it was going to be their last album and video, because of Dave's addiction and the problems they had when recording, so the video has elements from eight previous videos. "Corbijn described the video as a retrospective of the work he had done with Depeche Mode. He said he made it that way because he wasn't sure if he was going to do another Depeche Mode video after it.He later elaborated stating, that this video was made during the rise of band troubles and of Gahan's drug addiction so it was uncertain whether the band would still exist for another video to be made."

      While Martin was never addicted to drugs like Dave, he did admit to having a problem with alcohol for a long time. I think as others have said, I get heavy vibes of dealing with the struggles of codependency but feel like it can lean in either direction of being towards a substance or a person. I feel like that's why this song in particular is so good because people can find their own personal connection to it for one reason or another.

    It is absolutely "dark". Depeche Mode, with its sound and M Gore's music and lyrics, have always had significant traces of blackness in them - although there are also more gleeful and glitzy songs.
    This is DM at its darkest but also at its most epic and at its best - in my opinion. A Wilder as a sound creator was at his peak, with a magnificent song as well.
    I think and believe that it was to this epic sound that Wilder wanted to reach. A combination of electronics and more "humanistic" and "live" sounds. He also says himself that "In your room" is the song that he himself ranks highest among his involved productions with DM.
    The interesting thing about Depeche's soundscape is that it is impossible to define how or where the sounds come from. Regarding other electronic bands at this time, take Erasure for example, you can often define the sounds as belonging to a certain synthesizer. You can't do that with Depeche, apart from the earliest records

    For me one of the best DM songs ever ❤. The atmosphere, the darkness, in outro some glimpse of hope. It reminds me the storm, that kind, which cleans the air and after, you can breath better. My first interpretation was that the song is about some kind of obsessive love or relationship. Or the "ghost" of lover, who you cannot forget. Someone, who maybe doesn't want you to forget, who "will allways be here."

    For me, I thought of the first girl I loved and was obsessed with. Deep down I knew I was just a boyfriend and she'd have more. "Will you lead me to your arm chair" was like will you make just a part of your everyday life. "Or leave me lying here" was I was just a temporary plaything. The whole song just feels like its so painful to feel love, which I never heard any other song do this.
    I've heard Martin was experimenting with S&M at the time and the slave lines were literal.

    In Your Room is a real musical peak of DM. Unbelievable album version and rockier single version. Very nice 'goodbye' videoclip (director Anton Corbijn thought its the end of the band because Gahan's drug problems and devastating tour). The videoclip is a mix of the visuals used in previous DM videos. Awesome single package by content and design. My favorite release. Do not miss Zephyr Mix used for videoclip. Do not hesitate compare both versions side by side - th-cam.com/video/cGvZyrhObrg/w-d-xo.html

    I get your point about songs merging with outro's and intro's on the albums....
    Though on this album (LP) Judas was the last song on the A-side and In Your Room was the first on the B-side.....😊

    I am all a shudder with anticipation for your reaction to "One Caress". It's such an unexpected thing when you first hear it and I have no idea how you're going to react to it. We'll find out soon, I suppose.

    And now, before you move to the next track (Get Right With Me... that also has an outro), you can react to the In Your Room (Zephyr Mix - a.k.a. Single Version-) because is waaaaay diferent to this original album version.

    The Lyrics (as almost every Martin Song) are a mistery, in all my years as a DM fan i've heard very wild interpretations for this...

    This is one of the "big ones." (I like the album version better than the single.) You should hear Tori Amos play it live on youtube. BTW the next song, Get Right With Me, has an interlude at the end, so KEEP LISTENING! 😊 Who replaced Alan? No one, nobody could. BTW you need to hear Alan's solo Recoil project, especially the first three LP's, "1+2," "Hydrology," and "Bloodlines." The later albums that came out after he left DM got worse and worse, like being dark for darkness's sake. I equated it to "Alan in search of a song." He needed Martin's song as much as DM needed him! It goes to show, he hasn't had a new album in 15+ years while Depeche flurishes!

  • @balovett
    @balovett 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To my ears, this one sounds like another of Martin's submissive songs ("your favorite slave") about an intimate relationship in which the sub is intoxicated with their dom, but in doubt as to the permanence of the relationship ("will I always be here", "will you leave me lying here"). But I read below that Martin has said it was about his baby daughter. That would be very strange given the decidedly dark soundtrack which accompanies the lyrics.
    The build is epic, unfolding like a black flower bud over 6 minutes. That third verse really kicks the song into high gear. (6:16) Love that added funky bass. Those descending strings in the outro.
    Alan has cited this as one of his favorites in the Depeche Mode catalog.
    I think the word you were looking for here (0:20) is crossfade or segue, when one track fades out and the next one starts or fades in while the fade of the prior track is still present.

    Ich freue mich schon auf "Get Right With Me", love that.

    I've always thought this song was about God: "hanging on your words, living on your breath... will i always be here?". Though, as many others DM's songs, lyrics for this one can be easily be interpreted as some BDSM stuff :]

    I know many DM fans out there really love In your room. I didnt like it at all when SOFAD came. In fact i disliked SOFAD initially😅. To me SOFAD was a great shock. What had happend to my preciuos DM, and Dave with long hair😲. Eventually SOFAD grew on me, and its one of their best albums. In your room is still not my favourite track on SOFAD but i can appriciate it now, specially the lyrics💜

    This is the top sound of the band. Their best song for me. Alan put a lot of work on this album like always but leading with the others problems an a strange ambience of disconnection. He and Flood bring us a masterpiece.
