When reacting to "My Joy", the one B-side recorded for Songs of Faith and Devotion, make sure the version you listen to is titled "7 Inch" or "Single Mix" and not "Slow Slide". The 7 inch/Single version is the original version of that track. It is considered by many to be the best Depeche Mode B-side.

"Songs of faith and devotion" is usually defined by old Depeche mode fans as the top three of all Depeche albums - and not uncommonly as number two or even number one.
I like "Higher love" for its soundscape and dark atmosphere. It is also the song that the group opened all concerts with during the big "Devotional tour". One of the concerts during the Devotional tour was filmed and released on DVD - and can of course be seen on TH-cam. Often referred to as the best tour Depeche has done.
The next album, "Ultra" is without Alan Wilder and came out 4 years later, in 1997. - For a long time it was unclear whether the band would continue after Alan's departure and Dave's personal difficulties with his drug addiction.
"Ultra" is perhaps the album without Alan where you can hear the least that he is not involved. It feels like incarcerated producer Tim Simenon tried to do a pastiche of Depeche, so to speak. - Which he succeeded quite well with.
    - But you would still like to know how Depeche and Ultra would have sounded with Alan still in the band.

This song will always remind me of when I saw them on the Devotional Tour…………You’ll understand it when you watch the performance! I recently went to an evening with Gareth Jones in London breaking down Depeche songs from Construction Time Again. He was the engineer and co-producer for the Berlin trilogy. You wouldn’t believe the amount of layers on one of the DM sound sources, sometimes up to 6 elements to make up one thick layered sound. It was an amazing night.

I don't know if I'm wrong but I think that Martin Gore's way of writing provokes various interpretations, they are not the typical pop songs, they tend to be more profound than sad. Sometimes I don't know if I explain myself well because English is not my language.

I would say it's not so much sad as powerful and evocative, so it brings out many emotions, including sadness, but also a light, uplifting spirit. This concludes a quartet of what are arguably their greatest albums, starting with Black Celebration. (Actually, Construction Time Again is my #2 rank, but that more for nostalgic reasons.) The next, Ultra, is considered by many to be their last great LP, mainly because Martin's songwriting was still in top form, but it stands alone as the first without Alan. Between Mart's songs and Alan's arrangements, they acheived a body of work that will never be surpassed. Bask in it! (And BTW, as you get into what I call the Late Phase, be ready to be...underwhelmed. There some good stuff, but it'll never be like this.) Don't forget Death's Door and My Joy!

Thank you Seph for your wonderful reactions to SOFAD, my favorite album of all time. And you've finally made it to my FAVORITE song of all time. Not favorite song of the album or favorite DM song but the most perfect peice of music I believe ever created. The atmosphere Alan made with the music is simply devine and the raw power and raspiness of the way Dave says Higher Love in the choruses are to die for. For the last 30 years I've tried to listen to this song every night before I go to bed. This song has it all. The Perfect voice, ambiance, lyrics/meaning. Depech Mode is and will always be my Higher Love!!!

Seph, I think that maybe the answer to this is what pervades most (if not all) of DM's songs - a dissatisfaction with what IS in the World, and a longing for a state of existence which is higher, more perfect, more heavenly. Thus the musical tone reflecting sadness and longing. I do feel the mood lifts though towards the end of the song and becomes more hopeful, less tortured ...

The whole album is the result of a band imploding or exploding... When you are at your lowest ebb you shine .. Like a phoenix from the flames.... This album was a crash in emotions, conflicts of opinion, fights, arguments, absolute disdain for each other.... Production from Flood and Wilder burst the balls of the music at the time ... Also this album saved Gary Numan's career..He was at his lowest ebb and listening to this brought him back from the brink... It brought me back to Depeche but when Alan left that was it for me

Great reaction! Not sure why you get sad from this one, I find it to be the happiest! Lol This is the sexiest track of the album “I can taste more than feel…” and it is also the most spiritual… “ I surrender heart and soul, sacrificed to a higher goal, moved by a higher love.” This is the “World in my Eyes” and the “Behind the Wheel” of this album. Maybe it’s something you find dark or how you relate to profound subjects (I noticed you didn’t say “spirituality”). it is, as always, about where you are when you listen to the song. I recently listened to “waiting for the night” after the millionth time (that was the 1st CD I ever bought in 1990) and “heard” something different and now I cannot hear it without crying… that’s it! I tuned into something different and there’s no way to unhear it now! Enjoy the rollover coaster! DM songs sound different every time!

"I don't know why, this is another one... The lyrics come across as sad, but the tune is happy. It's got a happy tune but sad lyrics." (3:28) For me, it's the inverse. The lyrics are uplifting ("moved, lifted higher") and the music is largely melancholy.
"I know I'm smiling, but it's really got a sad vibe to this. Like it's very downplayed. How do I pronounce it? Is this in a different... not like in a high key? It's in like a low key or something? I don't know how to actually explain what I mean but it feels sad." (7:58) The verses use minor chords (sad tonality) and the choruses ("moved, lifted...") use a major chord (happy tonality) and minor chord ("...higher"). The bridge ("heaven bound on the wings of love") uses major chords (happy tonality). I think this is what you are describing here with the feeling of sadness during certain passages of the song.
The modulation (chord changes) in the third verse always cut me up, when Dave and Martin harmonize in a higher register, "I surrender heart and soul, sacrificed to a higher goal." (6:21)
As you are no doubt aware of by now, this was the opening track on the first leg of their SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION tour. It was a particularly surprising and emotional choice. Made even more dramatic in that the band were behind a curtain until Dave reveals himself at the start of the third verse.

By listening, it sounds like this song is in Am (A minor). There's nothing "high" or "low" about that. There are only twelve notes per octave (but there are a lot of variation on minors, which are utilized in this song). There's also lots of other scale variations beyond major and minor, but this isn't the place for that. :)
The song is very well constructed, like most DM songs from roughly Construction Time Again are. (The early stuff is a LOT of Vince Clarke influence, which is great, and perfectly constructed, but not what DM turned into. Vince ended up making Yaz and then Erasure after leaving DM and writing one of their most iconic hits, but I'd say he did fine.)
Let the song play through without stopping it though. Go back to parts you like when it's done -- great. Pause and rewind constantly -- not so good. But at least you're getting exposed to why DM has endured. :)

I love this little breakdown! Thanks for this Kevin! 😊
Legally i have to pause as much as i do. Its just the way youtube is 😅
Either i pause the song and talk or i get sued by a billion dollar company for copyright infringement.

@@SephPlays If you have a piano (or any instrument I guess) and know how to play, go Am, F#m, Dm, Em. That is the main progression here. It then goes to FM, and then a common descending progression. Didn't figure out those little violin hits between chorus and verse though. heh... It can't be hard. I only spent 5 minutes or so getting what I got. But dammit, I was right on the Am guess! :)

This is so damned hot! Too bad it was during one of the worst periods of Dave’s life.
