Just yesterday I went to pick up my favorite budget bottle which is old Forester 100 and instead of $23 bucks it was $15 so I impulsively bought three of them but now I'm regretting it, so I think I'm going to go buy three more.

Whole heartedly agree with the WT101. I am definitely happy I have that in my lineup, and surprisingly it gets so many great reviews from the TH-cam communities bourbon aficionados
I knew there was a reason I like your channel. OGD 114 has been one of my favorites since before you were alive, well you don't look like you've hit 40 yet. But we differ about the bottle. I like it.

And it was cheap.

I know I've hated on EW BiB in the past but it grew on me. Especially after I reach about the halfway mark on the bottle. It's now in my affordable rotation.

Wish I could find Fighting Cock around here - Minesota. Have never seen it but have all the others on the shelf. Love them all especially OGD 114 and it is Lot No. 1
I know I rarely have a bottle of WT101 around, well at least one with anything in it. That shit goes quick, by far the best bang for the dollar. But my favorite is Knob Creek 9 year, just a smidge over 30, but the wife appreciates it.

I've got Old Forester rye and the signature on my shelf and are both daily sippers. So delicious can't go wrong with these two at all. And stand up to more expensive bourbons and whiskeys.

Great list. I'd heard about Fighting Cock before, but since I'm a huge Heaven Hill fan, I'll be picking one up. Plus I like the proof point. Also OGD 114 is by far the best bourbon for its price.
OGD114 always has a place on our shelf. We just killed a bottle last week, and it feels naked without that chunky SOB in the mix.
OGD 114 is the perfect decanter bourbon. I hate pouring out of that bottle
I keep mellow corn in a decanter.

Bought some OGD 114 for $21 in Texas. Best budget bourbon I ever had. Hits above twice its price.
OGD114 is $22 in my area and my go to bottle for daily drinking! Best value bottle!

Agreed, I love the Turkey 101 more than everything under $30 except OGD 114, which is why it gets my vote as best cheap daily.

I'm not a fan of OF. On my list I would replace it with 1792. For Heaven Hill products, Evan Williams single barrel can sometimes be really good.
EW Single Barrel is my favorite mixer with Coke or root beer. Perfect marriage of flavors.

Great list, although I do not like OGD, and I don't drink rye.
Fighting Cock is incredible at $17 (in my market). I finally found a bottle of David Nicholson this week in North Carolina (can't find it in Savannah) - it's really good, but it was $32 (well above MSRP) but still worth the buy.
Agree on Old Forester 100. But I always have EW BiB in my budget list. And Very Old barton 100.
I don't know if I can imagine Wild Turkey 101 in your hand, but I can sure see the one in my collection lol
My Top 5 under $30 no particular order:
1. Buffalo Trace
2. WT101
3. Benchmark
4. Four Roses
5. George Dickel No. 8 and No. 12
My Father owns a liquor store in TN and it is surprising how many people SLEEP on the George Dickel lineup. The No.8 is a fantastic mixer, and the No.12 is a great Neat Sipper. I have pointed many a customer to it and it has changed their mind on GD. We do blind tastings and many a time GD often comes in the top of blinds.

Matt I completely agree with your list. However, I prefer Turkey over Grandad. Old Forrester 100 and the Rye are seriously underrated. I also wanted to tell you that I only recently found your channel and I really like your style!
I wasn't a huge fan of OGD 114 at first, but it's since opened up and is quite tasty. Lot No. 1 club here too.
OGD 114, WT 101, 1792 SB, Bulleit Rye & Bourbon....there, fixed it for u. OF Rye is just not all that and I'm primarily a rye guy.

I'm a big fan of Big House Bourbon. $18 from Barton 1792 distillery that nobody seems to know about. I recommend you try it out
Never had the Fighting Cock or David Nicholson...I can confirm the other 3 are fantastic value bourbons. WT101 is about as classic as you can possibly get, in my humble opinion. I love the Old Forester profile for that sweeter banana flavor so both the rye and 100 are phenomenal. Cheers, bud!
Knob creek small batch 100 proof is daily drinker for me .
Early Times BIB is great value too. $23 most places and stands up well

I am really enjoying this channel. Funny, insightful, informative. I'm a long-time bourbon drinker. I am also a professional jazz musician. I have to mention that the piano trio music soundtrack is always outstanding. One video had a Rhodes player, as I recall. Are these tracks randomly selected? Or is someone involved in these productions a jazz fan? A jazz player, perhaps? Matt?

I have lot 1 OGD114. I just assumed that lot 1 was the most prevalent. If it’s truly the best batch I might snag a couple of backups because it is de-friggin-licious

If this was best bourbons under $20, the Fighting Cock would probably be a good pick, along with EW BiB. However, the WT101 beats it hands down for a few $$ more. OGD 114 is $30 around me. There's many others I would rather drink for that price.

I thought you were going to do the good cheap whiskey litany - which I guess you partially did, but you had to, because it's true. That being said, you threw in a couple of surprises I haven't tried, so that gives me a couple more bottles that I don't have to scrimp and save to try. Would have liked a few more tasting notes, but that's just a nit pick...
Thoughts on the recs:
I will try those Old Foresters. I've only tried the 1920 and contrary to, well, everyone on the internet, I have to say, especially for the price, I was mightily disappointed. Maybe I got a "bad bottle," but the complexity wasn't there for me and I was left wanting more flavor and finish after each dram. I'm a little gun shy about Old Forester now, but I'm chalking it up to just being a fluke.
I had never heard of the David Nicholson 1843. Definitely going to to find that one. I've heard of Fightin Cock, but still don't know exactly why it's making people's lists.
Even though Rare Breed is my all round favorite, I would pick Old Grandad 114 over WT 101. I like 101 just fine, but it's a come down after Rare Breed. The extra proof and different taste of OG 114 gives it the edge over WT 101 for me. Now a WT 114 that competes on price with OG 114? That would be interesting... Also, I didn't know to look for lot #1. Good tip. Ok, I guess that's a joke. Good joke (?) ;p
By the way, what is the WT funk? How do they get it? I know this is a great set up for a joke, but I do wonder...

Great picks. There are a LOT of good whiskies under $30 that are so much better than Jim Beam white label or JD. I know better than to suggest Evan Williams BiB, but Evan Williams Single Barrel is under $30 and can hold its own with any of those 6 bottles.
OGD 114 is the only "budget" bourbon I haven't had as a adult. It's hard to find here in SW PA. Either they dont carry it, or its sold out all the time.
Don't know where you live but you can't get any of those where I live!!......Try Evan Williams BOB--Jim Beam Black---Rebel Yell 100(Wheater)---Larceny (Wheater)---Very Old Barton 100--Evan Williams 1783(Honorable Mention), only two of those are over $20.00!!
