I am a true devotee of Wild Turkey 101, so I'm not surprised that it took #1. I have a friend who's husband is a whisky fan, and he was offended when I said that WT101 was my favorite bourbon. He felt that if it wasn't at least $100 a bottle, then it wasn't worth drinking. Needless to say, he was even more offended when I told him the stuff he'd been drinking all night and praising was WT101. Great stuff! (I also like Old Grandad 114)

I drink a lot of bourbon, but WT101, along with Knob Creek Single Barrel, are the two bourbons that I heartily give a 10/10 to. WT101 is just amazing. It has absolutely everything you want and everything you need.

I first started drinking whiskey about two years ago. Since then I've tried about 30 different whiskeys. None of them have stood out as much as Wild Turkey 101.
This is not only due to the unique flavors - sweet and leathery upfront with a profound fiery finish... but due to the incredibly low price point.
When you take into consideration the flavor, price point, and availability, nothing beats the 101.

I'm glad you were able to select Evan Williams bottled in bond over the Early Times bottle, because the controversy of the Early Times bottle is that the bottling and liquid inside have changed compared to as recently as two years ago due to production changes from the distillery.

Very down to earth and straightforward and honest.
I would also like to add that like yourself I am a die-hard fan of wild turkey and it's entire family but 101 is what made me fall in love with bourbon and the first time I tried it I knew bourbon was my spirit of choice.

Let me start by saying that I really appreciate the time you guys put into these videos. I truly enjoy watching them. That being said, I always go into these "blind" taste test videos with a lot of hope that the test will actually remain blind until the very end, but so far, the ones I've seen never do. In my opinion, other than knowing which bottles are in the line-up ahead of time, none of the brands should be revealed until the very end. And when possible, not knowing ANY of the line-up is ideal... The ability to "narrow down" the playing field as you exclude brands that don't make the cut, screws with the minds of the tasters and subsequently potentially skews the results. For whatever reason, whether rational or not, we bourbon/whiskey enthusiasts develop emotional attachments to various brands and seem to have a very difficult time separating ourselves from those attachments once certain brand names are revealed. Additionally, I believe that having "neck-pours" of freshly open bottles (Such as OF and EW in this video) involved in a blind taste test with previously opened bottles that have had plenty of time to breath, skews the results right off the bat. I'm sure I'm not telling you guys anything you don't already know here, but often times, the first pour (or two) from a freshly cracked bottle will have a heavier ethanol presence which can overpower and effectively cancel out some of the flavors that are much more prominent in a bottle that has had time to open up and breath. And this, in my experience, is especially true with the less expensive (but still delicious) whiskies. I believe for a blind taste test to be truly fair, all the bottles should be somewhat close to the same level, and should have 4-6 ounces (at the least) already absent. I would be very interested to see this same test done under these slightly more stringent guidelines with these same bottles. I wouldn't be surprised if the results were a bit different, although, I believe Makers Mark would still come in at or near the bottom. I LOVE their Private Select stuff, especially store and/or club picks, but their flagship bourbon is unfortunately rather boring. Just my $.02...
On a completely different note, have you guys ever had or considered having guests in any of your videos? I'm a genuine nobody in the whiskey world, but I think this would be a lot of fun, and would happily volunteer, as would many other whiskey nobodies out there, I'm sure... Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving!

Has someone who deals in the science field I have to completely agree. When you know what is in the line up you skew your opinions even if it's a little bit. For a true blind taste test, you can't know what the lineup is or the sample list.

Thank you Kurt and Trenton as well for sharing this taste testing with us because I was also curious about what your winner would be from your previous video displaying your 5 top $20 Bourbons.
I was really shocked Old Forester got eliminated but blind taste testings are super difficult. With that being said, Bourbons don't really have a large flavor spectrum as say compared to whiskeys. With Bourbons the flavor spectrum is quite small, you either get sweet, caramel, maple syrup, vanilla, and the likes or you get the opposite end. Bitter, leather, oak, spice with subtle notes of all in between.
Again with that being said it really just depends on which end of the spectrum you enjoy more.
But that's the amazing thing about alcohol is that there's a drink out there for just about anyone and that's really awesome. I'm with you and Trenton. I definitely prefer the more traditional sweeter, caramel, vanilla, maple syrup side of bourbon with that well-balanced oak flavor coming through as well. I mean it's like candy in a glass and that's the perfect adult beverage in my opinion.
Thanks again Kurt and Trenton for sharing another awesome SBLbasement Bourbon video 🙂

I'm brand new to drinking bourbon, and your channel. I have learned a LOT from you guys, so first of all I want to thank you for doing these videos!
One of the things I have learned from your channel (and others) is that the level of the pour changes the flavors, therefore I don't think this was as fair as it could have been. The banana flavor of the Old Fo would probably come out more in a deeper pour. The Turkey 101 was certainly in a really good spot for the flavors to shine, and having picked up on your fondness of it anyway, I am not surprised that it won out. Maybe sometime you could revisit this lineup sometime and get past the neck pour of them all beforehand, and maybe do as others said and not reveal ANY of them before the end. Just from your comments I was picking up on what some of them were, such as the Maker's Mark.
Overall, I understand that this is subjective, not scientific. I really do appreciate your channel, as it have enhanced my experience, and you guys have turned me on to some really great buys, such as the Early Times BiB!

I'm glad that you eliminated my two faves early! BT and EVBIB. I'm getting the impression that you and Trent prefer a less sweet bourbon. For me, the sweetness of BT and EVBIB make them very approachable. Let's face it, I have to water them down anyway since I cannot take neat or just over ice anymore...gettin to old, man! Some of the suggested bourbons would be priced above $25 in my area( Elijah Craig , O.G.D. 114 and buffalo trace ) . Old Forester 100 is as good as any of them in my book . @@Glock2201 over the past 4 months I kind of bought everything on the shelf. Found out I love rye and really dislike Old Forester bourbon (bought the 86,100, and 120) I can see why others enjoy it, nevertheless it's just not for me. The tin cup 10 is very good if you enjoy oak. Highly recommend but it's a bit over priced for the proof. Just opened frey ranch last night. 90 proof (4 grain) and has a menthol twist to the traditional bourbon profile. Glad I only bought a 350 of the bourbon. Wild Turkey 101 is a real favorite of mine. So glad that it won. Phenomenal stuff, really well balanced, but also with some real character and profile that does a beautiful job of showing what makes bourbon so distinctive and special. It is an excellent ambassador for the world of bourbon. This is what good bourbon tastes like. Yum. I definitely get caramel and oak and little bits of maple and pecan because, well, that's what bourbon does. And there is some cinnamon and baking spice in there, too. Just delicious. If only I could get Early Times BIB here - I'd do an A/B in a heartbeat.

I had heard good things about EW BiB, I was able to pick up a bottle the other day for $15. Tried it last night and I was impressed. I just had it neat but for $15 you can’t really beat it. Wild Turkey 101 always pleases, and always hits way above its weight class. I'd love to see WT101 in a blind test against Kurt's top 5 $30 to $40 bourbons. Oh, and the WT 101 Rye would garner the same result in a value rye blind.

I love all of these choices. But when it comes to blind tastings, I actually try to limit it to two or three choices. Once it goes over that, the taste portions of my brain start to get a little rattled with each sip, and I start to over or under estimate the flavors of what I'm sipping four or five sips in, and it's hard for me to give a fair assessment, especially when they're so close, quality wise.

Thanks for another fun video! I have to say, I'm with you guys in being surprised that Old Forester Signature 100 Proof didn't make the final cut. As I said the other day, it's a very versatile bourbon as well as affordable. I'm less surprised about Evan Williams BIB, although I was one of those who nominated it; I'd call it a decent day to day bourbon. Overall, nothing really stunning about the results; I was a Wild Turkey guy for many years and am always happy to renew that acquaintance, while OGD 114 is tasty but approaching the top end of my proof preference. Question: Was that Old Forester 100 proof first opened for this tasting? I have ALWAYS found that you have to open the bottle, take a small pour, and then wait a few days to let it open up. And then the flavors are gorgeous. It replaced Buffalo Trace as my go-to not that long ago. You got to let it breathe.

Glad to see you put this blind tasting together...It really helps put $20.00 plus/minus into perspective. Coming in new to Bourbons on a more serious level, this is a great list of 6 to buy and try without breaking the bank...heck, you can get all 6 here in Oregon (state run) for $161.70 to be exact. What a great way for anyone interested in getting their start down the Bourbon path. I've never tried 114 or 101 back to back, but both are some of my favorites. It's hard to find 114 in NC, so maybe my memory is adding to what I think of it. However, as I've tried a lot more bourbons over the last year and a half, I keep coming back to 101 as a solid, affordable bourbon. It's great in cocktails, too. I tried Rare Breed for the first time this year, and it's also really good, maybe a bit less complex than I was hoping. However, that fifth of Rare Breed I got for a camping trip didn't last through the end of a few days with a couple friends!

After trying several popular bourbons, we each settled on Wild Turkey 101 as the bourbon of choice at his house and mine. Years later I came across a Bardstown, Kentucky product called Fighting Cock. WT101 has great caramel, toffee, cinammon & oak flavors that are balanced beautifully & it has a full mouthfeel & proofiness. Best value out there is WT101! No need to have to search for allocated Buffalo Trace.

My personal favorite overall is Evan Williams B-I-B. The others are all very good and I have enjoyed them each at one time or another! Thank you for a very interesting episode, thoroughly enjoyed!
