PMDG DC-6 Basic Nav Tutorial | Flying VORs, NDBs and ILS in MSFS!

  • Today, we highlight some important basic Navigational features you'll want to use in the ‪@pmdgsimulationsofficial51‬ Douglas DC-6 for ‪@MicrosoftFlightSimulator‬ . For this video, we change the Radio Stack options in the on-board Tablet to the NON-GPS option so we have to do it old-school!
    I'll show you how to:
    1) Tune VORs, activate them, navigate with them and see distance and ETA
    2) Tune ADF/NDBs, activate them, and navigate with them
    3) Tune an ILS approach and hand fly it manually using the instruments
The route should you wish to give it a go for a short and simple training flight:
Depart LGAV (Athens), tune ATV VOR (114.4) and fly direct to it. Then fly direct to the Aigina EGN NDB (382.0) before heading towards Megara MGR NDB (405.0). Then turn back on yourself, tracking the ILS Frequency for the runway you wish to approach on!
We used Runway 03R for take-off and landing in this tutorial.
Of course, there is more to it - including the fact that the Gyropilot can fly and track all of the above, including an ILS approach! But that will be done on another tutorial soon of course. The basics always need to come first... and I'm learning as I go too!
Hope you enjoyed it - and those with the DC-6, I hope you're enjoying it as much as I am! Be sure to click Like on the video down below and Subscribe while you're here too. Before you go, let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below, especially the thing you enjoy the most with the PMDG DC-6 for MSFS! Thanks for watching

I loved this thank you! After months of eyeing up the DC 6, i finally gave in and got it in my hangar! Currently learning tons by devouring the 20 PMDG tutorials and any other tutorial video i can get my hands on. I cant wait to get up into the skies - old school like you of course!

So funny, I flew LGAV last night as well :) Currently comfortable using ILS, continue learning navigation without GPS, just VOR and NDB. Then find some old timetables from 50’s and start flying them :)

I've been flying ifr on vatsim with the DC with no GPS. I have about 45 hours of flight time and I still cannot get the localizer to follow the heading. I guess you have to use the knob on the center console no matter what because the plane doesn't have a heading bug.

This is the basics in a way - tune the frequency from any charts you have, then turn it on and fly directly to the needle 👍 ignore that navigraph Nav data is installed as the NDBs should be there in MSFS anyway with the correct frequencies

@@BritishAvgeek When I fly NBD-only airports (well they have RNAV these days too as all IFR airports do, but I disabled the GNS430) I find it works well to track left or right of the NDB course. I'll fly the opposite side of the airport as the expected side for landing. Most of the approaches require flying over the NDB beacon and down the opposite direction of the approach course and doing a 45-180-45 procedure turn. When getting close the ADF needle will start moving and once it's close to the opposite approach course direction, I'll turn into it and then over the airport. I mostly fly arctic airports.

The gyropilot will hold a VOR course in the localizer mode. In the Garmin just select GPS with the CDI button. This will cause the Garmin to synchronize the VOR gauge needle to the GPS leg. Then flick the switch on top of the gyropilot to localizer and it will fly that course.

Look like you wrecked your engines. Engine 2 was struggling all the way down and you were using throttle rather than flaps to manage speed. This is not a jet - it's a radial engine, and throttle should be constant all the way down. PMDG has a good tutorial on this.
