VOR saved my bacon on my private cross country in 1975. I was not listening or it just didn’t sink in when the flight weather station briefer told me my destination airport was two miles visibility with fog. That was the second leg on the trip. I blissfully took off and when I got near my destination I couldn’t find the airport cause of the fog. I took radials off of two VORs and when they crossed figured out where I was and where the airport was. Finally found it.
There should be WAY more stuff like this where you actually show the instrument working in real time, rather than someone just drawing what the instrument looks like at certain static points. Way way way more helpful.
@@FreePilotTraining i don't need VOR, I'm not a pilot but I'm interested in this and I've played right SIM some years ago. I never understood those maps but now I do! This video is great. The kindly thing I wasn't 100% clear on was if I was left or right of the angle line for to make a correction. So if I was flying To/through and the line was left of center, the aircraft is the center, so do I get to get on the line by turning towards the line, or do I turn the aircraft to make the line come to me which would be a right turn? I'm guessing I'd turn left to move the aircraft over the line that's off to the left to bring it back to the center? Great video. Well done. I'm sure these videos will bring you lots of students.
Wow, I feel much more educated about VOR's now. I really struggled to understand them completely in one of the online schools, this is done VERY well! Thank you!
During my flight training days, my instructor had me verify that I tuned to the proper VOR by listening to the audio Morse Code identifier and then matching the sound to the printed Morse Code elements on the chart. I told her that I confirmed it by ear already. She didn't believe me. I then informed her that I held an Amateur Extra Class Ham Radio license from the 80s, whereby I was required to demonstrate my ability to receive Morse Code at 20 WPM by ear and that I had my Ham license in my pocket if she needed proof. She just said "Oh...ok, then." Hehehe.
Great lesson! Well articulated, illustrated and demonstrated. An other good trick is: FROM top TO bottom. To find out on what radial you are on, rotate the OBS and when the needle centres if you have a FROM indication, you read your radial position on top of the indicator. Conversely, if you get a TO flag, you read your radial position from the bottom of the I indicator. Thanks for the video, well done!
So many different ways to explain/learn. I learned this one as "read the radial from the base of the triangle", which is basically the same: When your VOR flags FROM the station, the base of the triangle is facing upwards, so you read your radial on top and vice versa.
Quick tip for calculating the correct radial is the +2/-2 rule. Heading if 060 you add +2 to the first digit and -2 to the second, leaving the third completely alone which would give you a heading of 240. Easier than adding or subtraction 180° Heading of 310, you -2/+2 giving you 130. Learned this through another video so i cant take credit for this but i found it extremely helpful for quickly calculating an opposing heading
Thank you very much for posting this video, It really helped me. I'm a student pilot from Poland currently doing PPL license and your videos combined with few others are a great source of aviation knowledge and by this video I can say I've learned how to use VOR's thanks again.
Ive wondered about these VORs for a while, and you taught it perfectly as I already have nav training from the military, this was very easy to understand in under 15 min.
Dude I literally had never heard of a VOR before clicking on this video but you made me understand what it is and how to follow a course. Genuinely well done!
Your video is one of the better, and more understandable, videos that explain the basics of how to use a VOR in the real world. When you were talking about how to identify a VOR station you mentioned that a pilot can “turn the sound on”. Actually, you would need to turn the squelch “off” and then turn the volume up enough to be able to hear the Morse code identifier. It is worth mentioning that if turn the squelch off and you don’t hear anything, assuming that the volume is turned up enough to hear it, that means that the station is unusable, possibly for maintenance reasons or the station is out-of-service at that time.
You mentioned the adding or subtracting 180 to see the opposite bearing. I have an even easier one for you. Let’s say you’re at 030 from the station and wanna fly directly to it. Add 2 to the first number, subtract 2 from the second number. That means 210. Now does it work the other way around? Sure! You’re at 350 from the station and wanna go directly to it. This time turn it around: first subtract 2 from the first number, and add 2 to the second number. That means 170. Keep in mind, if it’s below 180, you wanna first add, then subtract. If it’s above 180, you first wanna subtract, then add. If you don’t keep that in mind, you’ll either be in negatives or above 360. Good luck guys!
Was always told add 200 and minus 20. Opposite of 090? 90+200=290 - 20 = 270. And for 270, Minus 200 and add 20. 270 - 200 = 070 +20 = 090. Practically the same as yours but with more zero's.
I have been watching your vids for a while now and im coming up on my written exam for the private license. I wanted to say thank you immensely for sharing this knowledge. My dream is to be a cargo pilot and with your knowledge sharing i feel ever more confident not only on my upcoming written but the rest of the journey as well! Thank you!
This was awesome. I loved this video. My son wants to be a pilot, and I’m learning some of the fundamentals to help him out. As a software engineer I totally geek out on this stuff. Brilliant explanation.
Wow, this is definitely the best VOR Tutorial that I have seen yet. You just taught me something that I don't think has been explicitly explained on other VOR videos which is your clear explanation of Bearing vs Heading and To Fly To a VOR you must Fly Through that VOR to a radial on the opposite side of that VOR. Yes, I admit that that I have been ignorant.
Thank you so much! I think that’s important in order to fully understand them. You also have to understand bearing from the station Vs bearing to the station
I have been struggling to understand these things all week and this is the first video I've found that actually covered the to/from aspect inna way that helped me to understand! Thank you!!!
Thank you very much for making training videos. They are succinct, engaging, and provide clarity over questions I have after reading the PHAK and other resources. This is a great video on VORs and navigation!
Ive already passed my written and am studying for my oral and checkride currently, sadly I've been flying for 4 maybe even 5 years (rough time training every single CFI I've ever had would take me to a certain stage then the new CFI would restart me from 0) and still no ppl but this lesson helped me a ton! over all of this time I still don't really know how to use VORs and now I feel like I definitely have a much better grasp! I've always just used the CDI as a landing counter hahahahahaha
How can we avoid to be in the same situation as you? Do your CFI's not tell you that they're not going to be able to train you all the way through? Or is it because you are not consistent enough so you spread out your training so long that the CFI's eventually leave?
You're right; this explains VORs WAY better than anything else I've seen or studied! Thanks!! "To go to the station, you must go through the station" ... wow!!
I greatly appreciate this! With nights and instruments all that’s left in my list before check ride; this is probably going to be my main form of navigation since landmarks around this part of the country are pretty scarce even during the day.
Yes, Yes, and we are over a super populated area and many structures look the same. Needing the VOR's to help me out. Not wanting to get lost up there.

Ground school has been pretty easy until VORs and I've been panicking. This definitely helped. Still a little lost but this has helped put it in perspective a little, thank you!!
I learned how to use the VOR and ILS from one of the OLD versions of MS Flight Sim's instruction books. It came with the game back when games were bought off shelves in boxes. The book had it explained incredibly well with illustrations that made it obvious. Hop into the game and sure enough, it all worked and made sense. It made is so simple when I took real flying lessons.
When I was getting my PPL, the school had a red bird that I could use any time I wanted without cost and I primarily used it to figure out the VORs. Simulators are so nice for that type of stuff
At 5:10, my instructor told me a really easy way to opposite compass headings really quickly is +2/-2. Either plus or minus 2 from the first number and do the opposite to the second. i.e., 180 1+2 = 3, 8-2=6, so 360. Or 250 2-2=0 5+2 =7 070. I'm not sure if this was a problem for others, but fast compass reading was a little bit sticky for me, and this might help someone else like me :)
I don't fly any longer but will have to say that using single and double VORs was xplained about the simplest I think have ever heard it explained ! Great job! Keep up the excellent videos coming!
This is awesome for student pilots. Free ground instruction. Wish I had something like this back in the day. Back then it’s figure it out on your own by the book, talk to a more experienced pilot, buy a training video, or pay for ground instruction.
Thank you! Yeah, I started making these because I told my students that there must be ground course videos they can watch on TH-cam, but there wasn’t anything complete
Believe me when I say I have watched tons of vor utube videos. This by far is theee best for explaining it. I watched and hit liked on all of them. Wish I lived closer. I'd choose you as my instructor.
Thank you so much! I spent a lot of time on this video because I know how confusing it is, and I don’t think a lot of people explain it correctly so I thought I’d try my hand at it
VOR’s are so simple. Before GPS they are how we used to easily and quickly get around. That little needle on your dash was just like a highway to your destination. Used it all the time.
Josh sir many thanks....felt I should let u know I passed my written well after learning from all ur amazing easy to understand instructions, what a relief for me, family, buddies..much obliged to u. Currently studying for my EASA PPL and this was the best video so far and now it makes totally sense to me. :-) So big thank you and kudos from Germany.

If a go pro overheats, I can use the rest of my cameras and I haven’t lost my audio rest of my cameras and I haven’t lost my audio
You are a literal life saver! Your details and visuals in your explanations helps so much! Much better than my online ground school. You should make a free instrument ground school playlist.
Great video with easily digestible information. I've watched probably 15 different videos on this subject, and here I was looking for yet another one when I stumbled upon this. You were clear, had good examples, and did a great job explaining it in practice in the aircraft. I don't think I will be looking for anymore videos about it; instead I will just come back to this one. Thank you for this.
It's been a long time I've not heard a pilot talking about VOR ! Actually, we no more use it nowadays and I can't see which recent light aircraft is still equipped with a VOR today. But this kind of video makes me feel a few decades younger !
@@FreePilotTraining That's because you can no more rely on VOR, I've noticed that many are not maintained and seems definitively out of service. I'm quite sure that in the near future there will be VOR left only on airforce bases.
Listened to this a variety of times, made my own diagrams until it made sense in my head. Conclusion: this video really tells it ALL! Great job. The only improvement I can see is that I would have summarized with the most common uses cases and how the CDI should look and what the bearing of the plane should be, for each use case (for example, these use cases: traveling away from a VOR, traveling toward a vor, figuring out which radial you are on, triangulating your position using two VOR's, navigating between two VORs) You talk about elements of each of these, but a bullet point summary of all of them, in a table at the end, would be great reference material)
Thank you Thank you Thank You! I was doing some final studying for my ppl written and really didn’t understand VOR. I was going to go take the test and I felt worse come to worse I might miss a couple questions on VOR navigation. Well I came across this video about 2 hours before my test which had a heavy chunk of VOR questions like 6-8, and I did not miss a single VOR question and walked away with a 93 today…. Again thank you for the excellent content.
You did it well sir., it's a very good for student which fast track for them to learn. While we find it a bit difficult during school long time ago. Yeah, maybe because of the way you approach via effective mechanism of communication. You did it! Steady and Goodday 🎉
Greetings from Topeka, Kansas. A new terminal building is currently under construction intending to replace the almost 70-yr-old current structure. Tammy's Billard Airport Cafe is open 6am to 2pm Wednesday through Sunday. Generous portions and reasonably priced food. Cash and checks only help to keep the prices down.
I was lost at the beginning until you mentioned the other station, that's when I realized that it's exactly what you learn in the military for land navigation to find your exact location. Did I learn....? You better believe it. Thank you.
Omgosh, you made this so easy. I finally get it. I think other instructors/schools should just skip teaching VOR themselves and just tell people to just go watch this video. Lol
Hey free pilot training! Just wanted to lyk I passed my faa exam today! I was able to watch these videos prior to starting ground school so my mind was familiar with all the topics. Just wanted to say thanks for the help!
For reciprocal headings, I was taught for headings that start with 2 and 3 to subtract 2 and add 2 (add 2 subtract 2 for headings that start with 0 and 1) Example the recip of 236 would be (2-2) (3+2) 6 = 056. 310 is 3-2 1+2 0 = 130. 078 is 0+2 7-2 8 = 258. Blue skies.
Really appreciate this. I have one hour training from 25 years ago. I am considering (preparing actually) to start back up. Over the years I played with MS Flight Sim and could *never* understand what was happening...so I tossed my hands in the air and just flew by the seat of my pants!
wow. i was sceptical of the title of this video. You will REALY understand VOR's after watching this. Thank you!!!
I appreciate that! I don’t believe VORs are explained correctly and this video was my attempt to change that!
Thank you so much for simplifying this topic…

Add 2 to the first number, subtract 2 from the second number. That means 210. Now does it work the other way around? Sure! You’re at 350 from the station and wanna go directly to it. Awesome! It’s a great area! You’re welcome
Great video. My 13 YO daughter is beginning to become a commercial pilot here in Vietanm. This really helped
Awesome
This is literally the best I have EVER heard this explained! Thanks so much man!
I love hearing that! You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
I really struggled with the VOR concept with the jepessen ground school.now I feel a lot more knowledgeable about it now .Thanks again Josh !
You’re welcome! Thanks for this comment!
mvp dude, I don't understand why this is something a private pilot needs to know for written but this helped me tremendously.
Thank you! I know. Eventually, we probably won’t even teach it
This is the best explanation I've ever seen on this topic. 😀
Great Work !!!!
Thanks Patrick! I appreciate that
Truly the best learning out there. You have no idea how helpful this is, thank you!
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Believe me when I say I have watched tons of vor utube videos. This by far is theee best for explaining it. I watched and hit liked on all of them. Wish I lived closer. I'd choose you as my instructor.
Thank you so much! I spent a lot of time on this video because I know how confusing it is, and I don’t think a lot of people explain it correctly so I thought I’d try my hand at it
The best VOR video out there on TH-cam! Thanks!
Thanks!
VOR’s are so simple. Before GPS they are how we used to easily and quickly get around. That little needle on your dash was just like a highway to your destination. Used it all the time.
Yes, they are very simple
Studying for my written test and can check VOR off the list after this video. Thanks for the effort you put into this tutorial.
Awesome! So glad I could help! You’re welcome!
Same here. Best wishes from Germany
by far the best video to understand VOR
Thanks Max!
Josh sir many thanks....felt I should let u know I passed my written well after learning from all ur amazing easy to understand instructions, what a relief for me, family, buddies..much obliged to u. Next the big one soon🛩You r are great mentor for an all round aviator👍❤🙏 Please keep them coming...Wish u were here in So Cal. Be safe mate, cheers.
You’re welcome! Congrats on the big hurdle! Checkride next!
Fantastic tutorial! Excellent presentation very good🛩 Clear and concise explanation of VOR navigation essentials for private pilots.
Thanks!
Currently studying for my EASA PPL and this was the best video so far and now it makes totally sense to me. :-) So big thank you and kudos from Germany.
Awesome! Thank you so much for that! I’m happy this helped you
The Darn VOR has been quite the obstacle to overcome. Great explanation!
Thanks!
wow - i have always found this a bit tricky in patches. The first 10 minutes ironed out everything in my head. Good video - Thanks!
You’re welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
Looking to start ground school pretty soon, and I just found your channel and its amazing. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Happy to do it!
This is as simple as videos can get. Thanks for the VOR tutorial!
No problem!
Wow. Your lecture actually worked. Now I understand everything about it!! Thank you very much!
Awesome! You’re welcome!
josh is just the best teacher
Thank you Steve! That means a lot!
A really useful and excellent lesson! Thanks man!
Besides that, I wonder, how do you record your micro while flying to do those videos?
Thanks! I appreciate that! To record audio I originally bought this cable www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/11806?gclid=Cj0KCQiAorKfBhC0ARIsAHDzsltAJp_vB3bTzYrE8OOpHFbu47XoVnRdiSyTV3Xn_2ds_0nmIL113YkaAgGLEALw_wcB to plug in directly to my GoPros, but GoPros really like to overheat in the cockpit. A few months ago, I bought this audio recording device www.amazon.com/Digital-Voice-Recorder-Lectures-Meetings/dp/B084KQMH6V/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=1ZQG28ZIVD4AE&keywords=audio+recording+device&qid=1676466337&sprefix=audio+record%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=AQ1GO4ZRYD98S&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzUzJLOVlXRkRLUlJCJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODI5OTUzMlVUSE81WkJDMzEyUCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMzQxMzQyMUZFMU5CQlhGSjk5MSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX3Bob25lX3NlYXJjaF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl and the main cord from the GoPro audio adapter plugs right into it and I haven’t had a single issue since. If a go pro overheats, I can use the rest of my cameras and I haven’t lost my audio rest of my cameras and I haven’t lost my audio
Thanks mang. Best flick on VORs I’ve seen so far.
Thank you so much! Means a lot!
Excellent explanation!! THIS is the way to explain this subject properly!!
Thanks! I appreciate that!
As an a&p avionics mechanic it’s also a great refresher will recommend to our young technicians
Thanks! That’s good to know!
You are a literal life saver! Your details and visuals in your explanations helps so much! Much better than my online ground school. You should make a free instrument ground school playlist.
Thanks! I appreciate that! I have plans to start working on instrument stuff. I’ve got a few more PPL videos to wrap up first though
You did a fine job explaining VORs. Thank you.
Thanks! I appreciate that!
I love this channel so much!!! Thank you for helping me learn faster and understand things fuller
Thanks Kyle! I really appreciate that!
Awesome! Thank you so much for the comment! I’m so glad you found this useful!
It's been a long time I've not heard a pilot talking about VOR ! Actually, we no more use it nowadays and I can't see which recent light aircraft is still equipped with a VOR today. But this kind of video makes me feel a few decades younger !
Lol, I still use em quite a bit, but I know a lot of people don’t
@@FreePilotTraining That's because you can no more rely on VOR, I've noticed that many are not maintained and seems definitively out of service. I'm quite sure that in the near future there will be VOR left only on airforce bases.
One of THE best content out there. Well done!
Thanks!
Thank you! And thanks for the feedback!
Bro, your videos are awesome Thnks for give us this tools
Thank you!
Awesome! Congrats on a great score! I’ll see you around!
Scott, what other methods did you use to study for your written? Great score btw!

I have watched a lot of your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make these incredibly helpful.
You’re welcome!
Also add a note regarding the dots on the cdi. It's 2 degrees for every dot. So full scale deflection would be 10 degrees.
You did it well sir., it's a very good for student which fast track for them to learn. While we find it a bit difficult during school long time ago. Yeah, maybe because of the way you approach via effective mechanism of communication. You did it! Steady and Goodday 🎉
Thanks!
Thank you guys so much for this video. Easy to understand and this was something that has always confused me in the past.
Awesome! You’re welcome
No need for a refund! Well done sir👍🏽Thank you 💪🏽
Awesome! You’re welcome!
Great. Will need to watch again. I am going to start my private pilot in Feb.
Awesome!
That’s cool. I’ll have to check it out
Excellent tutorial! Great to see actual cabin footage along with the diagrams and charts. I've subscribed!
Thank you! I appreciate that! I’ll see you around!
I was lost at the beginning until you mentioned the other station, that's when I realized that it's exactly what you learn in the military for land navigation to find your exact location.
Did I learn....? You better believe it. Thank you.
You’re welcome! That’s why I teach it that way. That’s the way the military teaches it
Having no clue about any of this... Now I feel like I understand it all. Great vid
Thanks!
Omgosh, you made this so easy. I finally get it. I think other instructors/schools should just skip teaching VOR themselves and just tell people to just go watch this video. Lol
lol thank you! That’s why I made this video. It’s easier for me to have a student watch this than to explain it on a whiteboard
I am retired Private Pilot now , but took me time to understand VOR but became good at it .
It’s amazing how that works
Hey free pilot training! Just wanted to lyk I passed my faa exam today! I was able to watch these videos prior to starting ground school so my mind was familiar with all the topics. Just wanted to say thanks for the help!
You’re welcome! Congrats on the huge milestone!
Blue skies.
I love that technique! Thanks!
Amazing today all my doubts about VOR and even this practical explanation was amazing brother thank you so much
You’re welcome!
Really appreciate this. I have one hour training from 25 years ago. I am considering (preparing actually) to start back up. Over the years I played with MS Flight Sim and could *never* understand what was happening...so I tossed my hands in the air and just flew by the seat of my pants!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
