    4:48 good ol' 1R1
    7:34 5R5, 1R5, "something that requires good recoil management after the reload"
    11:37 3R3 on the move between two spots, finish before getting to the 2nd spot (15m)
    14:22 3R3 (preferably on paper) from 40m in a course of fire that runs through all your mags, for experimenting with kits. All mags are timed together (or break them apart to see which one's faster?). 3 shots, reload on kneeling, 3 more, prone, 3 more, reload **from prone** , stand up, 3 more again
    17:52 barrier at 35-40m from USPSA target, 3 on one side of barrier, get behind cover and reload from belt/carrier/whatever, hop out other side kneeling (different posture than what you start with), 3 on same target from there
    22:48 (if you don't have a place to live fire) place 2 sticks on the ground, start at 1, have a few targets to aim at ("more than 1"), aim your weapon at a target, move after getting a proper sight picture, run to 2nd stick, acquire the same target, "fire", repeat

    Yup. 1R1's just induce a training scar. Reloads are either intentional or emergent. If it's emergent, you're not expecting it by definition, so you should not expect it in training. 1R1's don't help because you're expecting to reload after 1 round so you never train a reflex. I found the best way to train reloads is to just load random amounts in different magazines. Anywhere from 25-30 or 2-5, depending on what I'm doing.

    • @fnerXVI
      @fnerXVI 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Same. When I go shooting with friends I usually ask one of them to fill my magazines with a random round count form anywhere between 3 and 10 rounds (ammo is still kinda expensive). Once you're familiar with your weapon you can kinda tell when your magazines start to run dry. In my case, the buffer tube starts to sound different.

    • @lincolnpascual
      @lincolnpascual 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly. Idk when it changed, but that's how I was trained when I was coming up. 1R1 drills are only good for one thing- building the muscle memory for reloading. People focus on the drill while forgetting what the overall intention is- improving preformance *IN THE FIGHT.* If all your doing is 1R1 drills, then you'll look great on TH-cam, but when push comes to shove, you're going to choke. You don't rise to the occasion, you fall to the level of your training. It's the main reason I've never taken 3 gun comps seriously. Range work is great, but unless you are also applying it practically, you're only getting half the benefit.

    • @jopsball-turret6969
      @jopsball-turret6969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. However, I think it helps with newer shooters just to get the process programmed into the brain. Or newer to being tacticool

  • @lincolnpascual
    @lincolnpascual 3 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    I usually randomize how many rounds are in a given mag, and work from there. Could be 1, could be 5, could be 15 or even full. When you work from a set number every time, you build the muscle memory for that amount of rounds. Subconsciously, you start counting how many rounds are left and prepping for that LRHO. In a real fight, especially if you've been doing tac reloads the whole time, you're not going to have that full mag all the time, nor are you going to be able to hold that count all the time, every time. Randomizing the round count during training will help break that mental prep, and simulate the surprise and chaos of an actual fight. Especially if you time it for added pressure. You might be in the middle of engaging a set of targets and you run dry... do you switch to your sidearm to finish the set, or do you reload right then and there? Either is viable, and both have pros as well as cons.
    1R1 drills are only useful for building muscle memory. They have almost no practical application by themselves. People get to locked into doing these drills and forget the overall picture- increasing your performance in order to be more effective in the fight. It's the same dichotomy that appears in martial arts- training form over function, and vice versa. If you can't apply it practically, then why make it your focus?

    • @jonathansmith2656
      @jonathansmith2656 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @masonhales

      You should know how many rounds are in your magazine at all times, so this drill is kinda pointless lol

    • @Hozugi
      @Hozugi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@masonhales You won't be able to tell the exact number of rounds left in your mag. To do this - you would need to count each shot which you won't be able to do in stress-heavy-environment. Sure - you can release mag and assess by its weight that you are at half or about to run out but you will never be able to tell the exact number of bullets left.

      The only use I have for 1R1 is dry firing. Nailed it on the head, you subconsciously get ready only for one round then a reload. At least I have. I always get a buddy to load two mags. Both having a random amount at 5 or less then I do a Mozambique reload.

      It's still practicing reloads. Most people aren't going to be able to round count under stress. They're gonna shoot till the mag runs empty. If you're counting rounds to do your reloads, then you're focusing on the wrong things while firing.

We went through more than 6 hours (less 1 hour for lunch) on gun safety and learning how to disassemble and clean including our State and city laws. I was amazed how little I knew about: handling, trigger pull, sighting, types of ammo, etc. At the end of the day, my instructor said he was very impressed with my groupings from 25 yards to 50 yards. I hope one day to get to this level proficiency, expert tactical shooting, and marksmanship.

    I just have a big bag full of mags all loaded to random capacities, and some with snapcaps seeded randomly into them.
    So as I'm shooting at any time I can either run dry, and reload, or have a "malfunction" and have to tap/ rack ECT and also make sure to properly identify the issue. Not counting any actual malfunctions that may occur (pretty rare tho, hence the setups for them)
    Some mags may have 29, some may have 21 or 14 or even only 5-6 so it's entirely random and those reloads just pop up randomly.
    Works well for me, helps with processing and diagnosing problems ect

    Old video. But new to me. Since I am just now becoming a fan of T.REX. Anyways, what exactly are we training for? If my top priority is magazine changes for self defense then I might want to move to a safer place. I guess what I am getting at is; If I have 15 to 20 + pistol rounds and 20 to 30 rifle rounds. My training will be focused on ending the threat before needing a fresh magazine. Having said that I will still find time to train magazine changes. It will just be a very low priority. But God help us if America becomes that bad, I need to train on using more ammo.

    I think your overall point is valid and well received. The 1R1 drill is really meant to be a specialized tool practicing a very niche specific technique and not anything more than that. If people are taking it as more than that then there's a problem.
    I Do think it has a purpose and I think You're applying the technique in the wrong circumstances which is in part why you seem to think the drill is not useful.
    Recall that this is practicing an emergency reload. Emergency reloads are conducted under duress and in exigent circumstances where time is of the utmost importance. The more proximate a threat is, and the more precise their fires, the more exigent the circumstance.
    If a threat is at 100 or 200 or 300 yards, there's no reason to use this technique. Unless exposed in the open or taking extremely precise fire as previously stated.
    So your criticisms of the drill not allowing you to practice good marksmanship and control are somewhat misguided. If you're in a fight that affords you the time to be extremely precise, then you have the time to use a different reload technique.
    This technique is for the fight where you have no time.
    Your other criticism seems to be that when conducting this drill at full speed you didn't get a proper grip on the follow-up shots. It would seem that that means the drill does not ingrain or give you the chance to practice good marksmanship. That's not necessarily the case either. If you're moving so quickly in the drill that you aren't maintaining good control over your weapon in the name of beating the timer, then you're moving too fast, period. That's not a problem with the technique that's a problem with you.
    I think the emergency reload drill is an important thing to practice and it zeros in on a very precise skill. It shouldn't be done to excess or neglecting other drills that combine multiple techniques. But it also should be understood in the correct light and not judged based on situations and circumstances that it was not meant to be used in.

    When I was in MARSOC we did something similar we would run a double tap drill with 3 targets different distance while moving back and forth between 3 postions. We would load each other's mags with a random amount of ammo and dummy rounds. It forces you to deal with random events

    Music at the end made me think of a new dynamic in some modern-day military game: have an enemy that your squad regularly engage with on battlefields, and he eventually picks off your teammates over the course of the game that you've 'bonded' with. Would make it very personal and intense, rather than some nebulous string-puller 'man behind the curtain' enemy you only interact with once.

    As a LEO in South East Texas my nears back up is at least 10 mins away, so I carry a PMAG60 as my primary magazine for my patrol rifle and l have a standard PMAG with a TTI extended mag on my duty belt, I have extended TTI mag extensions for my duty mags. In my opinion TTI mag extensions make a great tool for reloads and carrying extra ammunition. As the firearms instructor for my department l convinced the department to carry extended magazines on duty.

    Exactly right. If you want, do some 1r1 to get the fluidity of the reload down, but there's no need to run it every range session. If you're training as much as you should you get PLENTY of chances to train emergency reloads. But NEVER forget the tactical importance of the tactical reload!

    Take your mags load varying amounts into each, drop them all in a bag and shake it about. You now have a genuine reload training aid because you have no idea when that mag will run dry, you don’t get to preempt the reload and having to make multiple follow up shots will force you to adapt to go back to proper grip. Of course this requires you owning a few matching mags but it’s so much better than single round start points in a real scenario most people won’t be able to round count, if you shoot enough to run dry and need to keep shooting it’ll more than likely be a surprise to you, get used to needing to reload without expecting it.

    In my opinion. The best thing you can do for speeding up reloading from your armor is don't. Run 1 or 2 mag pouches on your belt and when/ if you have the time while being engaged in a fight is to move the full mags from your vest to your empty pouches on your belt for future reloads. Obviously this only works when you have the "down time" to do so.

    i learned in the army that if you are being timed, not to worry about it, we go under the pretense slow is smooth, smooth is fast. its better to get the reps in rather worry about speed, because if you are rushing you will fumble and it will cost you more than if you where taking your time.
