I Returned my Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K :(

- I had to return my Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K (back to Adorama) but not before I share with you some beautiful images, along with the two reasons- one I couldn't continue ignoring. I also had to return the grip (Back to BHPhoto), and the unopened grip to Smallrig, which has been the biggest pain in the ass. I'd avoid buying anything from Smallrig.

The clickbait title doesn't help your case. A better title would have been, "I returned a defective BMCC6K for repairs". Clearly, the one you had was defective. I follow Matteo Bertoli who has been filming client content with his BMCC6K for some time now. He has never mentioned any issues with frozen clips, or anything requiring the repair of his camera. Are you getting another BMCC6K? Or just giving up on it?
Definitely faulty- I’ve owned 6 Blackmagic Cameras, 3 have had issues, whether with noise patterns or freezing. Completely understand things go wrong, but a 50% success rate on cameras doesn’t build trust in reliability of the brand. With that said, if they release a version with NDs, I’ll jump on it. For now, I’m waiting on the R5ii. The latest Blackmagic is still the camera I miss most, more than the C70 and Komodo.
Just got my BMC6K FF and it has a terrible streaking/banding issue., so searching problems from others with the camera (and have found many). I, too, use the Canon R5, and it's been rock solid. Never overheated since the last firmware to address it, either . . PS - I think you know your next camera now :) .. C400 al the way! I know I'm looking at it .
Hahah just made a video about the C400, but I think there are lots of bad Blackmagic units- you just have to return and hope you get a good one.
Hi, sorry to hear about your experience. It was just a faulty camera. I have used (owned) all the Pocket cameras: OG, 4K, 6K Pro and now the new 6K FF. I would suggest for you to get the 4K with the Sigma 18-35 mm and Viltrox speedbooster. You get a super 35 with f1.2, BRAW and true 13 stop for a fraction of the price of any other cinema camera. Take care.

Is a new camera, you should have asked for another one! Sometimes the first batch of the factory has issues but official release + a few months usually this issues don't exist, plus a firmware. Hope it works out either way.
My anxiety won’t let me do a shoot with the possibility of the camera losing footage. For our 2 day shoot next week, I have 3 R6m2s for various angles but also in case one craps out
I believe you had a defective product because I have one and I’m not experiencing any problems.
Agree- I don't think they're ALL going to be bad, but this is the second blackmagic in my life I've had issued with- and this is 2 issues with one camera.
I dig the image, but man.. It’s always some weird crap with Blackmagic that reminds me why I paid less. I had to return 2 pockets because of block noise in the green channel. Just weird stuff like that and it feels like your opponent is their QA department. I don’t believe I’ll ever roll the dice with them again. Got 2 FX3’s a couple years ago and they’ve NEVER failed me.
My first one, the 4K production, had weird issues when the sun was in the image and back then, support took 4-6 weeks to get back to you. At least they respond quicker. FX3 seems to be the video camera of the year- and last year's.
If you still want BRAW, I highly recommend the S5II/S5IIX with the Black Magic Video Assist. If you still are in the consideration process.
I'm leaning on the S5iix- I used to own the regular S5ii, and it was a great camera
Your small rig experience sounds EXACTLY like the experiences I have had with them on any return or repair. I will never buy from them again.
I like their products but I would advise not buying from them directly unless it’s a big sale and you’re sure you not planning on returning it also I bought a Matt box from them and the mail carrier marked it as delivered when it wasn’t but Smallrig did send me out a new other one.
I will NEVER buy from them directly again. Their products are good, but customer support is a colonoscopy from a blind dog. I'd buy from Amazon or BH in the future.
Red Komodo x !!
It's just so expensive lol
I work for USPS. We have a policy that if a shipping box is unopened and the shipping label is still readable, we will return it to sender at no cost to the recipient. We can't take a box when the tape has been broken.
I imagine that UPS has a similar policy. Try it. It's worth a shot
Thank you! I did return it- they just haven't received it yet since they're in China and they're STILL asking me to send them pictures of what was wrong. I'm like braw....
oof smallrig... I knew what was coming the first time you mentioned them. Their products are usually pretty okay, but their support and longevity... Virtually non-existent.
I STILL have not received a refund, it's crazy how bad their customer support is.
@@omidacademy I know, right? I’ve seen much smaller companies on the verge of closing with far better support!
Wait is the best in the mean time S5iix as B cam...
Probably that, yes. Or FX3.
Which card(s)? were you using? I'm using Sabrent and haven't had any recording issues yet...
I was using the Angelbird 1785 MB/s 512GB cards, which are not on the approved list but i had previously used for RAW on the Komodo and C300m3 without any issues whatsoever.
I’m using Angelbird 512GB AV PRO CFexpress 2.0 Type B SE Memory Card and I’m not having any issues. $129
Fuji gfx100 ii
So expensive though- would love to use it for photos, but I'm a quick shooter and I think Fuji is more for people who slow down their shoots.
I had the same experience with the grip on my 6k pro
What was your solution? Sent it back?
Had this too with the 6k pro. Pretty sure it was when I had a mix of batteries in the camera with mAh voltage. When they all matched it worked fine. When there was a mix this problem occurred
this is an R5??? The colors don't look as good as I usually see from canon.
It's the lowest setting so I get small file sizes for storing all these videos.
Have you tried connecting external power and an external driver?
External power via its own DCI cable worked flawlessly. I did not shoot on SSDs though.
thanks for confirming, that even a Pro uses AF
If it fits the needs, sure. For corporate work, I didn't need AF (turned it off when shooting on the C70- it could hunt at times)
I think Lumix S5ii would be my choice. Good auto focus and image quality. Lots of features.
Lumix is great for F camera needs.
Used to own that! Great camera indeed!
Just don’t buy lumix. I would recommend c70 - such an amazing workhorse, fx3, r5c if you run an external battery. Fx6 is an fx3 with internal nd and audio built in. The new canon c200 ii will have the same sensor as c70
C70 was one of the best cameras I ever owned- R5C I hated that I had to rig it up to get decent battery life, shoot 8K 60p. I can admit I'm a gear head too and would love a full frame RF cinema camera.
😅 I’m going to stay out of this one. My close friend shots LUMIX and gets a hefty bounty for his work with big brands. At this point in Technology, it’s more skill and preference.
very well said!@@pureheartvisuals
