Thank you for the honest review. As a BMCC6K owner, I bought the camera for the reasons you have mentioned at the beginning of the video. I was aware of the drawbacks mentioned later. It is all down to your application, the way you use the camera and for what. I'm very happy with the camera and I would recommend it IF you want to achieve high image quality, colors and easy workflow.
glad you are happy with it that the most important. that said though - literally any 10bit FF camera out there can achieve same results with less cost, AF and IBIS. People like us - amateurs - need to be aware of this.
It’s subjective. For instance, I shoot real estate, no persons are involved, therefore AF isn’t important. However, IBIS is essential, I’m shooting handhled until I save up for a gimbal 🤷🏻♂️
The most honest review on TH-cam! Great job! It's actually funny, that Blackmagic introduced Global Shutter years before Red and Sony with their Ursa 4K and Production 4K cameras, so it's ridiculous they stopped🤦🏼♂️
Think Blackmagic is in general making too much money to care or whoever is there making decisions they have zero awareness of their client base. Sad… but hey until I can afford / justify a Komodo - this will do 😅👌
Those sensors were made by CMOSIS. Blackmagic dropped them and continued with Fairchild until they moved onto Sony. They don't develop their own sensors
I don't own the BMCC6K or any BM camera, I use Canon. However I've been really impressed with the image quality of BMCC6K footage posted on different channels. I've tried working with test clips of 12bit B-raw in Resolve. It's excellent quality, manageable file sizes and super easy to work with (in Resolve) and BM cameras probably have the best and easiest menu system. BMCC6K has a daylight viewable high quality display & the Studio version of DaVinci Resolve is included in the price. To me those factors are just as important or more so than IBIS or auto focus. I guess it depends on the type of work you do that determines the type of functionality you need. I'm very happy with my canon R5C but if I decide to invest in another camera it will be the BMCC6K.
I would argue that in competent hands R5C blows Blackmagic out of the water there is no competition between the two. Even in colour. You only get that that tiny bit more flexibility in post with BMCC6K. But if you know how to expose and light correctly that advantage goes outta window.
Interesting you say this. I’ve graded a LOT of Canon footage and have never been impressed with the color. Always felt thin to me. Of course, I’ve graded RED and Arri footage too, so maybe this isn’t a fair comparison. Canon colors look real, but not rich, if that makes any sense. BM colors look rich, but not real. I’d buy a RED camera in a heartbeat if I had the money.
I like your attitude! No bs talk. Honest and transparent. Excellent review btw. You're absolutely correct, it's not the camera, it's the skill of the one whose hands it's in that matters. A better frying pan won't make you a better cook. This principle goes with any form of art. Werner Herzog said the same thing... watch good movies! Study the greats. That's what makes a good cinematographer. Not the camera just by itself. Greetings from Melbourne!
@@CINENIMUS ah nice! Can't wait for that one. Just subscribed! Looking forward to it! P.s. after watching your video, i think I'm going for a Sony a7iv and a much better cine lens rather than the other way around. You've cleared my anxiety and paved a better nights rest 😂
Blackmagic user here. Every time I hear Blackmagic is putting out a "new" camera and it's just a different variation of the Pocket 6K, I just roll my eyes. The Pocket 4K and 6k were kings at their price point a few years ago but now cameras are coming out in that same range with better features and ergonomics. It's time for Blackmagic to step up their game and stop dissapointing me.
Id still put Red first 🤣 I remember reading the forums when Red released that stupid mobile phone of theirs that was a complete flop and so many people on the forum were raving about it and how it will be a game changer even before anyone even truly understood the purpose of it haha.
Thanks for the candid and honest opinion. The lure of the camera is that colour fidelity, the gargantuan screen and the icing on the cake, the full frame recording. I've seen some beautiful anamorphic stuff from this camera, truly spectacular. However, what the great camera makers give with one hand, they take away with another......IBIS, decent slow- mo. And you just know this stuff is really only round the corner. I am down 5 kidneys this year with gear I have bought, can I really afford to lose another? Oh, go on then :)
Haha wouldn’t lose a kidney for it especially for the poor iso performance for me that would be right up there with the biggest issues… just as bad as the pocket 4k….
Thanks for the honest review. Your review is actually the first ive seen where you've provided alternative cameras that are actually cheaper than the 6k Full Frame. I just bought this camera, and it's my first. So far I love it, but if I really can produce an image just as good for cheaper than maybe I should return it and re-evaluate my options.
Thanks! If you like it - keep it. Get good at using it. Remember to expose as close to the highlights as possible and you will be fine. I never regretted getting my old Blackmagic 6K pocket or even 4k. This camera is a lot nicer than the previous two to use. I would only say if you need even lighter package and stills then yeah things start looking more complex… This camera for me mostly for anamorphic lenses. If I was planning just shooting spherical I would not have got it 🤷🏻♂️
I Love Blackmagic... (And if you like it just keep it) I have the 4k and use a lot a 6k Pro on work. Yet I must say (As a Resolve user with license) Sometimes I rather go with the Sony FX30 because lightweight, autofocus and really good quality. and the low light performance I found it (Don't have me) As good or better than the 4k. For studio shooting where we control the light we go on BM no without hesitate.@@CINENIMUS
Well if this is your first camera, you probably should keep it. By the time you learn to color grade, frame, edit, light, etc, your eye will be trained and you will know what you really need practically to work the way you want to work. If you just use it for a month and return it, you may find that after you grow you realize you had what you wanted in the first place.
Amazing review, but i'm more amazed by your lighting setup for the talking head shots. Could you please make a video showing us the bts of your creating process?
After careful consideration, I contemplated selling my 6K Pro in favor of the full-frame version. While doing some research, I realized that the upgrade might not fully meet my requirements. Consequently, I chose to keep my 6K Pro and opted to complement it with the Panasonic S5IIx. This decision ensures that I have all the essential elements I need, such as full-frame capability, image stabilization, and autofocus. Great vid, had a blast watching it
Yeah I can’t blame you some of the videos I have seen of S5II even are soooo good the IBIS is an absolute life saver. I no longer can shoot with cameras that don’t have it, certainly not with my broken back haha here is a sample I saw a while ago I really enjoyed of an S5II in Tokyo th-cam.com/video/nxz1JzQj0v0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Tw3xlvqX5UHUDXSU
Thanks for the kind words yeah you have two kinds of people reviewing cameras lately - people who were sent ones and people who trying to justify their purchase and don’t have good returns policy in their country haha
I second your points, I’m an URSA shooter and have been for years, and my pocket 4K was becoming a little too worn and cumbersome to take on smaller shoots. I was considering a BMCC and PYXIS but opted for BMPCC6k and sold my Pocket 4K for it. I don’t care if it’s two years old - built in NDs and screen in 2024 are key stone features
Dude thanks for this, I was considering getting this as a 2nd camera as I shoot anamorphic quite often and wanted open gate, but this convinced me to go for Lumix if anything.
Really interesting and informative review. I agree that it would be nice if they used a global shutter. Funnily enough, Blackmagic have already used a global shutter in the Ursa Mini 4k (not 4.6k), back in 2015
Hey man. Enjoyed your video. Just got the camera in myself a few weeks ago and been putting out videos on the camera myself. Just want to point out while there is no “horizon leveler” you do have Thirds crosshairs that you can turn on which have lines that go across the whole image and it adjusts as well based on the aspect ratio you engage.
@@CINENIMUS probably because it clutters up the screen. The Canon C70 didn’t have this on either from the beginning and it took me over a year to find it lol
Hi! I own a Canon 90d. Been using it for some years now however I'm contemplating purchasing a new camera. My thoughts are either the Blackmagic 6k pro or the fx30. The natural transition would be the Blackmagic as I could still use my EF lenses. Bit of a tough choice for me really. That fx30 would do great especially due to the autofocus and ibis as I usually work alone so having a compact setup where I don't need to do much will go a long way. The choice to get a new camera is really to jump from that beginner/middle-tier quality footage to a more professional tier of image and also to have higher and better recording formats. Which do you think would be the better purchase? PS: more into narrative work.
@BlackmagicDesign for the love of all camera gods, PLEASE listen to this crazy mortal and the many who are asking, Provide the market with a 'Dated' Blackmagic Designed FF Cinema product pricing it as you do well, Please! Thank you sir for slapping me with THIS awakening content saving me a couple of hard earned grand, I almost bought my supposedly 1st BM Design product; not that it is bad but all makes sense from your gutsy review vs other commercial brands and old BMPCC out there right now.
Awww man thanks for the kind words that means a lot to me 🙏 and yeah my recommendation as of today if you want a blackmagic - BMPCC6K Pro is the absolute winner. I have the original BMPCC6K and the Pro variant improves on all the things that pissed me off about it: Bright tilting screen, Bigger battery, Internal ND’s and price wise you only would pay 200-400 more and yeah dont buy new obviously 🫡
Thank you so much for this realistic review. I was considering to buy this camera or the Panasonic S5IIX, and now I have the things more clear. I´ll go for the Panasonic. Thank you again.
No problem. Even I no longer have it I went back to BMPCC6K pro. I like the 6k cropped sensor in it and internal ND’s much more useful. Plus it has better noise performance. If I needed an all rounded camera with best ibis then Panasonic for the win for sure
In regards to rolling shutter, the Alexa 35/LF and the Sony Venice 2 which are the top cameras for higher end production have a rolling shutter. Yes their rolling shutters are fast. I do feel global shutter cameras tend to take a hit in dynamic range. People like to say the Komodo has great dynamic range and is global shutter. I would argue without the software based highlight recovery the Komodo would have less dynamic range than a Pocket 6k. That isn't great considering the Pocket 6k is 1/3rd the price of a Komodo. The C70 has about the same dynamic range as the Komodo without software based highlight recovery. Yes the new Sony A9III has a global shutter but there are already reports saying it's dynamic range appears to be less than the A7S3 or the A1.
Readout speed don’t matter really. Like I said in the review it only matters Global VS Rolling. Can you share the links to the testing you done on Komodo VS 6k dynamic range?
Than I for being honest and informative! As a owner/previous of this camera I can confirm gyro does not work, 3200 iso is unusable (second base s actually 1250). It’s in every way worse then the pocket 6k G2 but it’s wider field of view
@@CINENIMUS yup. The blackmagic fan base is pretty bad. Any criticism towards even noise being worse then the original pocket 4k and your met with hundreds of messages that “your not lighting your scene”, “a real DOP would shoot at iso 400 and light accordingly”, “you don’t understand the camera” etc. I tried using the camera along side the FX6 (FX6 was A cam and the blackmagic was for BTS). Footage that came out was pretty unusable. The FX6 would sit comfortably at iso 800 while the blackmagic would had to crank to 2500 for the same exposure in the exact same position.
@@LukeBroadhurstfilmyeah 100% and Red fanboys not far behind either maybe its the “cInEMa” crowd haha all the losers who probably dont even own the cameras but wish to
@@LukeBroadhurstfilm there is something called price point brother and both camera has been used to create visual compelling images seems like you found BMD haters club. BMD as a company a giving a great tool at unbelievable price with 12 bit raw and free industry standard software. yes there are quirks which every cameras has and don't start with Sony monopoly practices gate keeping the tech, not even providing basic tools like false color or wave form to begin with and calling it as cinema camera. every scenario has it's own challenges and DOP picks according to it.
Have you considered trying Kipon's EF-L speed booster with the 6k FF? Allows you to shoot 4k 60fps 17:9 with extra stop of light and better rolling shutter around 15ms while still maintaining FF coverage.
So if I definitely need full frame and definitely need raw (and only raw), would you recommend Panasonic with an extrrnal recorder rather than this blackmagic?
As an S5 iix user I can say there are more tangible advantages to this camera than appears in specs alone. For instance the S5 ii x says it has open gate and says it has 6K and says it has BRAW, but in practice using one you will lose another. For instance BRAW is only through HDMI but going through HDMI you lose open gate. Also you need to add the external monitor and recorder and so on. Looking at specs it will appear that S5 ii x has the same rolling shutter as this camera but again in practice black magic win out because of its gyro which can almost completely correct rolling shutter using a push button feature in Resolve. So many aspects are like this and is why I moved from the S5 ii x, which I loved, to the 6K.
Guys I have this cam and can confirm this review is accurate. Gyro doesn’t work correctly and second base iso is 1250 (Blackmagic support themselves confirmed this to me and recommended that 3200 iso not be used!).
@@CINENIMUS direct quote from BM support ticket: “ISO 1250 should be the top ISO when shooting in lower light, as anything higher and you start to see the increase in noise and you will have to use noise reduction in post.”
I’m pretty upset with them at the moment. Perhaps they can adjust with a firmware release (the initial firmware release did lower the noise somewhat - but still needs abundant light). This is what my follow up was to them: To BM: You should correspond with your marketing team as they are directly contradicting what you have conveyed and ultimately are not accurately listing the specifications or use cases for this camera. Below is directly from the page which outlines the two iso bases of this device: direct quote from your web site: “In digital film ISO is a measurement of the image sensor’s sensitivity to light. This means the higher the ISO number the more sensitivity to light so it’s possible to shoot using natural light even at night! The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K features dual native ISO up to 25,600, which means it’s optimized to minimize grain or noise in images, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor. The native ISO of 400 is ideal for scenes with on-set lighting. The secondary high base ISO of 3200 is perfect when shooting in dimly lit environments. The gain is set automatically as you adjust the ISO setting, so it's easy to capture great images when you don’t have time to set up lights.”
@@CINENIMUS I know BM have potential. If this cam had a clean second base… it would be a home run. I mean… as upset as I am that I feel it’s defective according to BMs specs… I still have to say that at iso 400 in daylight scenes - the image is 10/10 its stunning in daylight there is definitely no denying that.
Commenting on why Blackmagic doesn't have IBIS (And I LOVE IBIS) is because cinema cameras rely on external sources of stabilization, there are a couple inherit problems with ibis, namely lens flare elements reveal how shaky your footage originally was before its stabilized by the sensor, this can be very distracting. And the second point is, if you are doing any sort of VFX that requires complex tracking, you are making your life a LOT harder by using IBIS (Trust me I made that mistake). That being said, I love my Blackmagic camera along the Panasonic S5II, they compliment each other very well.
Thanks for your thoroughly review. It's a weird camera, for sure. I bought it since I care mostly about image quality and I'm already invested in the L-Mount system, I wanted BRAW and didn't want the chunky combo of adding the visual assist to my S5. Somehow I think this camera is akin to the Sigma Quattro in photography, where you had a weird body camera, a dated interface, an overall slow system, very limited in functionalities with battery issues as well... but the quality image... that was "the reason" to get that camera, but I agree that it was not for everybody. Regarding the reviewers that you accuse of not being neutral, I don't know if you're referring to Mateo or "Of Two Lands", but so far I think they're being pretty neutral, obviously not hiding that they like this camera (as flawed as it is). Thanks again for the video! And I hope you keep posting footage of the 6K FF. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed the review I will not mention who was referring to when I said about other reviewers but those two fall in perfectly in that category and if you don’t see it then hey good for you - I bet you sleep easier thinking the world is a nicer place than it actually is… S5 used to be my pic to the best value camera on the market. Right now Im leaning towards ZVE1 jus purely based on features. But if I would need to judge by the way sensor reproduces colours AND features then S5II takes the crown 👌
@@CINENIMUS Mateo hates 6k pro because of color shifts in ND and openly criticizes things he don't like and you are also doing it. he criticizes Sony which he hates to the core as you are with BMD but BMD doesn't have necessary budgets to come with new camera's and experimenting with base models and then release a refined pro model. bmpcc 4k had issue in the batch but most of the issue got fixed after few updates. give it a time it might improve with updates. All said your points are valid for use cases but look at BMD with different lens there main focus is for image quality. ps No Hate towards just a different perspective
Fantastic review, thank you very much! I currently own the Pocket 4K and only do indoor/studio controlled lighting work. Do you think the 6K Full Frame is worth the upgrade (only considering image quality over Pocket 4K) with the current sale? I don't care about anything like ergonomics/battery/weather sealing, just need a two camera setup and am deciding between the current sale 6k Full Frame and another Pocket 4k. Thank you very much for your help!
Tough choice but if you have accessories for 4k I would stick with 4k. Even with sale price 4k used is 3 times cheaper so…. You can spend the difference on something like nice sirui mars lens th-cam.com/video/pFnK6CvRnA8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2JuMlNAU7zuSGIWa
@@CINENIMUS Awesome thank you so much for the reply! I am still keeping my first Pocket 4k so I would need a new set for the second Pocket 4k, but if the image quality improvement on the 6K isn't worth it, I might go with a second Pocket 4K ( I want to stick with BM for easy cutting between) and look into the Sirui lenses you mentioned. Thank you again, I hope you have a great day!
The only thing I don’t like about my three black Magic cameras which include the one that you are reviewing is the power on and power button issue. My first Blackmagic pocket camera I bought two. One of them I only used one time and then it never ever turned back on again. With the one you are reviewing it is sometimes hit or miss. It kind of scares me that I paid this much money for these cameras and the power buttons are that unpredictable.
Thank you for this in-depth review. I think I'm going to cancel my PYXIS order. It's a shame because it looks quite solid but some of this is unacceptable.
@@CINENIMUS tbh it wasn't really about the full frame. I'm a big fan of Blackmagic but stopped using them for work because I found Sony easier & quicker. I'm currently getting back into Blackmagic and I'm actually building a few myself but I thought the Pyxis would be great as a 6k box (loved my FX6's for the shape) this BM 6k seems quite limited.
@Altcine none of the BM cameras I could recommend over an FX6. I would buy a Komodo way before I would invest same money in Blackmagic. A lot of “fans” out there not sure why. I use them as they are cheap and disposable as when I travel I dont want to worry about the gear too much. I love sony - superb video cameras
@@CINENIMUS yeah you're right. I don't want to feel like I've downgraded. Love the Pyxis but it seems like cropping, noise, rolling shutter etc is just going to get me mad. Thanks again man, at least I'll have an extra £3k to play with 😅
@Altcine any time haha 👌 also remember you will no longer have ND’s, monitor, descent batteries, HDMI out and stabilisation - all of these things dont exist in pixies above all else. I use BM in a very narrow way check my insta you will see its mostly travel commercial work. I need raw for that and nothing else if I needed AF, or stabilisation or frame rates, or descent rolling shutter or low light performance - I would literally do better with anything else out there. One of my favourites - Sony ZVE1, defo a camera of the year contender - MEGA undervalued 👌in right hands its an FX6 without ND and with IBIS and better AF haha
Ha. That was funny, and honest. I have the camera and a range of LUMIX stuff too so I know what you mean. Have you tried the Sigma FP? It’s a complete pain to work with, but what you can do in post with the 12 bit CDNG files is remarkable. You have to try it if you are an image guy.
Very nice video! I am pana fan so will go for S5iiX which is on sale in Switzerland wich I will pair with video assist 12G I have already several S5 and L mount lens no option to change lens type...One question what are your setting with gyro stabilisation on P4K and 6K org I have them both and it is working well far from my gimbal or if I have it lens stabilisation...
For voice about 1m away its not a problem but if you speak quietly - then yes it might pick up. All blackmagic cameras I ever tested have loud fans (like most cinema cameras to be fair, later REDs are quieter though)
Its as good as anything else out there it really is amazing especially in terms of DR…. BUT so are many other cameras and the reality is lately it all comes down to personal preference. If you are not heavy invested in Canon - there are many options
Excellent and honest review. everything we should always see. One question, what external SSDs are you using? Can they record even in open gate and at maximum bitrate quality?
It's quite amazing that you're ready to pay more for a better body but in same breath consider buying the viewfinder very expensive. Then by tomorrow when they bring an aluminum body and priced it at $5-6,900 you'd say "bullsh!t, I would rather get a Red Komodo". We need to first understand the philosophy of BMD. They want to stay affordable to new and independent filmmakers. To remain cheap/affordable is to use affordable materials/system that yet don't affect performance and quality. If we don't understand this fact, we'll just be reviewing with baby emotions.
Lol consider stoping being such a simp for blackmagic. And yes komodo is superior in every way even compared to many full frame cameras. Your arguments are typical of blackmagic fanboy - you should have listened to what I said in the beginning and left. This place is no place for fanboy amateurs.
@@CINENIMUS Since you're not a fanboy no need to do such a long video listing all that you want in a BMD Cam. What an irony by the way? Just go get Arri Alexa 65 . That's what big boys like you use. 🤣😂😅😄🤪
Oh wow thanks for the weather sealing mention…. This is truly a no go for me. Now I’m done researching thank you 😂 Love the chilled vibe of the video 🎉
@@CINENIMUS what video camera options are there even ? I watched another video after this where a guy talks about that weather sealing is BS. There is no such thing as Weather sealing… he talks about that camera service places say that there is no such thing. I have a hard time believing that guy tho… wish he was right
this clearly your first Blackmagic camera lol they all loud (just like I said in the review) you are stuck with it my friend - Blackmagic don't care I tried it years ago with Pocket 4k and then with 6k and its the same with the Full Frame.
OH that might take a while but if you are thinking to buy it - stop thinking - just BUY it haha its freakin' awesome. There is not another camera on the market that can do so much for that price.
Me too. Love it. I am Blackmagic through and through. But just be honest and give us quality. They already have us with Davinci and thus the workflow. Black magic, please Innovate. We are with you.
Hey, I’m looking between the Black Magic pocket 6k and the Sony ZVE10 ii i’m looking good to get great image quality for cinematic short film style videos any advice you can give will help 🙏🏾
I have the pocket 4K and I’m not always happy with the color I get out of it - it’s just not always believable. I was considering saving up for a RED Komodo, but I don’t know if I can wait 6 months to a year before I’ve saved enough to buy it. I’m seriously considering this new Blackmagic camera. Initial grading of sample clips seems to yield maybe 20% more believable results than my pocket 4K. What do you think? Would this be an upgrade over the 4K? Really don’t want to go the Sony route. I’ve colored Sony footage before and don’t like it, and color is my top priority. Don’t care about box form or internal NDs or any of that. If the image looks beautiful then I want it.
@@CINENIMUS I've colored lots of 10bit footage. In fact, I started with the Canon 7D and colored that, which is 8 bit footage. It's not the 10bit color that really scares me about Sony so much as the color science. Even when matching it to other cameras, Sonys still feel clinical to me. True, I may be pixel peeping at that point, but I still care about that difference.
I tried RED Raw, maybe it’s because I am not familiar with editing the footage but it sucks to edit and currently isn’t for me. RED footage looks great but I haven’t learned to edit it. BRAW I use weekly so maybe that’s why I choose it over RED raw.
I picked this up on the big sale and while I love the end product with my full frame prime lens set, the limited 16:9 was by far what flabbergasted me the most about this camera. What an unnecessary omission that greatly inconveniences me on a regular basis. I do not understand why they would choose to limit it in this way when a simple firmware update can provide 16:9 at every major resolution.
The key word is “sale price” sometimes other camera brands do mega sales too so it should not be considered really. Blackmagic is the worst at this I am never ever buying a nee camera from them
@@CINENIMUS alright. Good to know. I’d still be happy if the proxy recording was usable as an emergency substitute. I imagine that’s why they did away with the dual card slots… Does the proxy have to be on the external ssd or can it be h264 on the cf express and then 12bit on the external ssd?
Hey man, Interesting review and nice work. Thanks for posting. One point though about the sound, your explanation about the dynamic range doesn’t make sense. That’s not how dynamic range is manipulated, calculated or expressed. You just recorded two different levels of sound one of which was a mono signal and another was one side of the same signal. Also… as an ex music producer with a physics degree and masters is Acoustics, I’d say that no one needs higher resolution sound than what’s presented in the unit as no one can tell the difference in resolution 👍🏿
I think you need to rewatch the video maybe on slower speed and revisit goole because you do not make much sense haha I aint talking about sound you know. You of all people should know better with them "fancy" degrees sound and visuals are not the same...
All I want to buy a BMPCC is autofocus so I can film myself sometimes. Random, but, my mom dropped my fx30 on cement from like 2 feet and it doesn't even have a scratch on it...only the ND filter got a tiny scuff. But I also have a cage and it fell on the lens.....broooo I thought I had lost my camera for a moment...I guess that's Sony quality.? It literally has no scuffs 😅💅🏽 And last.....you remind me of Dr. Strange 👀
Haha thats a funny story I had similar with bmpcc6k just a lot sadder haha nah Blackmagic built quality is junk compared to literally any camera brand out there. If you need AF - Sony is king stick to it 👌
There is another video out there that claims to be “honestly the most honest review.” And another that claims to be “more honest than other reviews.” And yet another says, “but seriously, it doesn’t get more honest than this.” Which one can be trusted to be the most honest? Is there a test I can apply to sort out the levels of honesty?
thanks for watching! and REALLY thanks for a nice comment, took me ages to do it with all the testing and all, I already see Blackmagic fanboys being upset haha
There's no IBIS because it's a cinema camera. Does any Alexa have IBIS? No. And it does have gyro data to stabilize it in post, which seems to work very well.
Does alexa have 26ms of rolling shutter, poor dynamic range, shitty plastic body, awful purple noise, banding and much more? I am comparing this camera so similarly priced competition - it is as cinema camera as any mirrorless BECAUSE its mirrorless and cheaply made barebones. But good on you trying to simp for Blackmagic I bet they will send you some positive vibe exposure monopoly checks
@@CINENIMUS Easy bud, I didn't mean to upset you- just pointing out that the BMCC6k is intended to be a cinema camera and should be judged as such. You're trying to compare seemingly similar things but with different purposes. Mirrorless cameras are amazing for TH-camrs, wedding videographers, and travel bloggers because their content demand a certain feature set- great auto-focus performance, small size, image stabilization, etc. They typically work alone so they don't need their footage to fit in a professional, collaborative workflow. Cinema cameras on the other hand value image quality and professional workflow above all else- high bit-rate RAW codecs, lens mount options, timecode, pro-audio connections. There are industry standards when turning over to a colorist or mix house. BMCC6k gives 6k full frame open gate RAW recording for $1,600 ($1,300 really if you factor in the $300 resolve license). Name a mirrorless camera (hell, name any camera) that gives you that at that price point. You can't. And that's the whole point you seem to miss. The BMCC6k is an amazing value... for someone who needs its features. This camera holds it's own among professional cinema cameras at a fraction of their cost. The rolling shutter is mostly counter-acted by just enabling gyro stabilization in Resolve with a strength of zero. No crop in and rolling shutter is gone. The dynamic range is 13 stops, 1 stop less than the Arri SXT and Mini LF! The body is made of carbon fiber (they literally build airplanes out of it). The noise of an improperly exposed image can be reduced in Resolve with noise reduction- which honestly, I MUCH rather be able to control in post using my computer's CPU rather than relying on the tiny chip in a camera to do it in real time. These features are amazing for a filmmaker just starting out. So, in conclusion, if it's more important to have IBIS and amazing auto-focus performance because you're run and gunning around a wedding or shooting your TH-cam intro, GREAT! The BMCC6k isn't for you because you don't need a cinema camera. Anyway, hope this helps. Good luck with the channel!

I dont hate the tools they just tools 🤷🏻♂️ both sony and canon have some killer cameras these day. Leica can’t shoot video at all its junk. For photos its great sure
Great review, I love Blackmagic but they really need to stop recycling parts from their own part bins and come out with a completely NEW camera. I know that this is a new sensor but it’s not enough for people to either upgrade or switch to this camera. I understand that they want to keep the cameras affordable but people will pay more for whatever they find value in OR whatever makes their work easier. Essentially, Blackmagic just sells cameras with amazing sensors…….THATS IT!………they are not really innovative when it comes to modern features that most prosumers are looking for. If they release a camera that has reliable autofocus and image stabilization they will truly disturb the industry again. Even if it cost 1k to 2k more. It will still be less than other cinema cameras out there.
100% especially about recycling old parts. It just feels like they been ripping people off ever since the bmpcc6k g2 was released. And 2.5 is no longer “affordable” that money can buy you A LOT of camera these days. Of which most will have descent AF, IBIS and built to last not like a fucking disposable camera makes me mad man…

@@CINENIMUS it's not possible due to 10 / 12 bit, and internal thing which sony makes with the image quality (like noise reduction). I just bought the bmp6 and it is not only colour - but the richness, depth and softness. sony footage look now more like phone (digital)
@@RafalGendarz maybe you should spend more time learning colour grading? 10bit and 12bit are not that much different when it comes to colour grading if you know what you doing. You know Alexas only recently started recording RAW, before that they were only 10bit and still looked amazing. All depends on the colourist's skills.

Contrary to popular belief, the resolve license that comes with blackmagic cameras should not be sold on. It's in the end user license agreement that the ownership of the license is tied to the ownership of the camera. In your case, it likely won't ever be an issue, unless you were to sell that camera on to someone else. That person may be able to retrieve that copy of resolve by contacting blackmagic with the cameras serial number, and the person you sold the license to wouldn't be very happy. I don't think it causes issues most of the time, but it's possible.
This is simply not true everyone knows that many people sell BLACLMAGIC gear and they specify if they sell the key or keeping it. I dont know what bullshit are you trying to achieve here

I only know about it myself because I happened on a reddit comment where someone had bought a used camera and wanted the attached copy of resolve, and BM gave it to them. it is not worst like 6k bmpcc it is not better, if you dont't have one, for shure, it is a good experience (and cheap). Sony have much more expensive lenses, the big trap are the lenses.
Sony mount has the cheapest lens selection in the market. Do some research you will see. If you thinking about native lenses then think again - the native Panasonic and especially Leica lenses are way more expensive than Sony G masters even.
This is a cine camera, a entry level one, the old BMPCC 6k camera have a EF mount, the entire range of canon EF mount lenses can be adapted to every cinema camera or mirrorless, this is freedom, speaking from cinematic perspective. If you start with a sony E-mount you will be them slave forever, does not matter if we are speaking about cinema lenses (manual aperture, manual focus) or a photo one. On our days canon EF mount is slowly disappearing, but the next mount winner is the Panasonic-L because it can be adapted to all mirrorless camera mounts, wright now.
Just get an s5ii
Canon raw is much more difficult to edit than b-raw. @@CINENIMUS
@@csound55 for you maybe hehe
Interesting you say this. I’ve graded a LOT of Canon footage and have never been impressed with the color. Always felt thin to me. Of course, I’ve graded RED and Arri footage too, so maybe this isn’t a fair comparison. Canon colors look real, but not rich, if that makes any sense. BM colors look rich, but not real. I’d buy a RED camera in a heartbeat if I had the money.
When new RAW can be more forgiving
You absolutely nailed it. Awesome, unbiased review. Thank you so much.

In your case I would get a BMPCC6K Pro Used.

Thats exactly my observations, I think there are more blackmagic fanboys than actual owners 😅

Yeah each to their own
Guys I have this cam and can confirm this review is accurate. Gyro doesn’t work correctly and second base iso is 1250 (Blackmagic support themselves confirmed this to me and recommended that 3200 iso not be used!).
There you go 🤷🏻♂️ and so many Blackmagic fanboys were screaming at me at first especially about the ISO 🙈
This is what my follow up was to them:
To BM:
You should correspond with your marketing team as they are directly contradicting what you have conveyed and ultimately are not accurately listing the specifications or use cases for this camera. Below is directly from the page which outlines the two iso bases of this device: direct quote from your web site:
“In digital film ISO is a measurement of the image sensor’s sensitivity to light.
@@NeonCucumber yeah brother they really if anything come across as trying to scam people, like if sony says 12800 is second base - whats BM excuse?
@@CINENIMUS I know BM have potential. If this cam had a clean second base… it would be a home run. You are very welcome

I will put it on my list I love the form factor
Very nice video!
I am pana fan so will go for S5iiX which is on sale in Switzerland wich I will pair with video assist 12G I have already several S5 and L mount lens no option to change lens type...One question what are your setting with gyro stabilisation on P4K and 6K org I have them both and it is working well far from my gimbal or if I have it lens stabilisation...
Have to make sure you set lens metadata correctly - I have a video somewhere
Wow, noisy fan? That’s a big no for me. I’m using very sensitive mics in very quiet environments. Thanks for pointing this out!
For voice about 1m away its not a problem but if you speak quietly - then yes it might pick up. All blackmagic cameras I ever tested have loud fans (like most cinema cameras to be fair, later REDs are quieter though)
Hey! Great and helpful video. Do you have thoughts on the Canon C70?
Its as good as anything else out there it really is amazing especially in terms of DR…. BUT so are many other cameras and the reality is lately it all comes down to personal preference. If you are not heavy invested in Canon - there are many options
Excellent and honest review. everything we should always see. One question, what external SSDs are you using? Can they record even in open gate and at maximum bitrate quality?
th-cam.com/video/Irv1dqMDTnI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QVNRHJjcpCEYwzQZ
Thats straight from BM fanboy simp bible 🙏
Oh wow thanks for the weather sealing mention…. This is truly a no go for me. Now I’m done researching thank you 😂

Great review and overall insightful view that other cameras can get the job done
100% this is exactly what I am trying to say - no camera is a silver bullet anymore and pretty much any can do the job.
This tells me that this camera is wonderful.

Anyone has noticed super loud fan? I got -35db on camera meter when meters are pulled max (6) or should I exchange 😢
this clearly your first Blackmagic camera lol they all loud (just like I said in the review) you are stuck with it my friend - Blackmagic don't care I tried it years ago with Pocket 4k and then with 6k and its the same with the Full Frame.
@@CINENIMUS yes my 1st lol can you measure if it’s also around -35db for you? With max volume (6db) I think it’s louder than normally/loud

Get better at colouring then - I learned may more shooting and colouring 10bit than I ever did on RAW
@@aaronkessler2857yeah no just git gud brodda
My friend, base iso is not the lowest.
If you make a noise test you'll find that 400 and 3200 have the best noise to signal ratio
Tell that to Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon and the rest noone is mislabeling their second base just Blackmagic
I tried RED Raw, maybe it’s because I am not familiar with editing the footage but it sucks to edit and currently isn’t for me. RED footage looks great but I haven’t learned to edit it. BRAW I use weekly so maybe that’s why I choose it over RED raw.
You meant colour grade?
I picked this up on the big sale and while I love the end product with my full frame prime lens set, the limited 16:9 was by far what flabbergasted me the most about this camera. What an unnecessary omission that greatly inconveniences me on a regular basis. I do not understand why they would choose to limit it in this way when a simple firmware update can provide 16:9 at every major resolution.
thats blackmagic for you my friend some of the choices they made are very interesting to say the least
great review! blessings and love!
Thank you! You too 🙌
I just picked up the G2 version on sale for $1500
You overpaid 🥹🙈
You've compared it to several cameras at its original price point. Do you think the value makes it worth it at the current sale price?
The key word is “sale price” sometimes other camera brands do mega sales too so it should not be considered really. Blackmagic is the worst at this I am never ever buying a nee camera from them
@@CINENIMUS Thank you. Appreciate your video & this reply.
Can this thing record simultaneously to ssd and cfexpress? I care about this a lot
no
@@CINENIMUS alright. Good to know. I’d still be happy if the proxy recording was usable as an emergency substitute. I imagine that’s why they did away with the dual card slots… Does the proxy have to be on the external ssd or can it be h264 on the cf express and then 12bit on the external ssd?
Not sure I wish I could disable that junk its awful
@@CINENIMUS no you said I record one mic at -6 db and another at plus 6 dB so I have really wide dynamic range did you not?
Yes
@@CINENIMUS so that is incorrect.
What?
What ssd are you using? Thanks

It literally has no scuffs 😅💅🏽
And last.....you remind me of Dr. Strange 👀
Haha thats a funny story I had similar with bmpcc6k just a lot sadder haha nah Blackmagic built quality is junk compared to literally any camera brand out there. If you need AF - Sony is king stick to it 👌
There is another video out there that claims to be “honestly the most honest review.”
And another that claims to be “more honest than other reviews.”
And yet another says, “but seriously, it doesn’t get more honest than this.”
Which one can be trusted to be the most honest? Is there a test I can apply to sort out the levels of honesty?
Only by watching it unfortunately and looking at people’s work if it looks shit then review is worthless
@@CINENIMUS So then labeling a video “honest” is just marketing? Lol
But what if you really care about having no cropping on the widest lens you can buy??
What are you asking I dont get it
Can I attach an ext monitor to 6k FF and get more codecs and possibly a better image quality?
Better than RAW???
@@CINENIMUS Still RAW but with the monitor
It has a monitor
@@CINENIMUS I mean Atomos V or Blackmagic Video Assist
Why???
great review brother!
thanks for watching! and REALLY thanks for a nice comment, took me ages to do it with all the testing and all, I already see Blackmagic fanboys being upset haha
I got the s5 maybe you got a resolve license for sale?
Do you see how long ago was the video posted? You think I would still have it and not been sold on eBay already after all this time?…
Sorry my bad... jajajaja @@CINENIMUS
No worries
Does this camera have a focal plane marker?
Yes
@@CINENIMUS Thank you, because I know that a common criticism I have seen is the lack of it on the 4K and other 6k models.
They all have it
If you hate Sony and Canon like me and Leica SL2-S used is more expensive this is a good option.
Of which most will have descent AF, IBIS and built to last not like a fucking disposable camera makes me mad man…
no camera is perfect, definitely not ZV E1 :), but when you talking about cons of this camera keep in mind it shoots 6K raw in full frame for 2500 dollars,
komodo who?

@@CINENIMUS oh, I've missed that. It doesnt has this digital thing so wanted to confirm it is not a sony
@@RafalGendarz its so marginal that I cold make them both look identical really
@@CINENIMUS it's not possible due to 10 / 12 bit, and internal thing which sony makes with the image quality (like noise reduction). I just bought the bmp6 and it is not only colour - but the richness, depth and softness. sony footage look now more like phone (digital)
@@RafalGendarz maybe you should spend more time learning colour grading? 10bit and 12bit are not that much different when it comes to colour grading if you know what you doing. You know Alexas only recently started recording RAW, before that they were only 10bit and still looked amazing. All depends on the colourist's skills.
Nice lighting.

@@CINENIMUS If it's true, don't get offended, just fix it. As you are unapologetic for your honest review, so am I. Filmmakers are either pale shlubby or skinny, balding or bearded, wearing hats or caps to hide baldness. Fanboys not filmmakers. They have those asymmetrical suitcase sticker tattoos all over their legs. Most are atheistic, narcissistic, pissy and cynical. The only stereotype category I see yourself in is the "self-rightous foreigner" who proclaims everyone as hypocrites and sellouts but himself proclaim as "I'm truthful unlike others". That mold press I've seen everywhere in film industry circles, both commercial and indy. The key is NOT to be mean but tell people to change for the better. Don't conform to a stereotype, change it.

a few cells that are not making the connection is just about right, you bend over for Sony so much you need to be there permanently

I dont know what bullshit are you trying to achieve here
@@CINENIMUS "If you were granted a license to the Software with a Blackmagic Design product, such as a camera, your license to use the Software is subject to you retaining ownership of that product and your license is automatically transferred when you sell or transfer ownership of the product" - Davinci Resolve End-User License Agreement
Just trying to spread awareness. I only know about it myself because I happened on a reddit comment where someone had bought a used camera and wanted the attached copy of resolve, and BM gave it to them.
I don't think BM care if you sell it or not, but as far as they are concerned, they only recognise the camera owner as the owner of the software. Its just something to consider for anyone who might want to buy that key.

it is not worst like 6k bmpcc it is not better, if you dont't have one, for shure, it is a good experience (and cheap). Sony have much more expensive lenses, the big trap are the lenses.
if you dont have a camera right now a used Blackmagic Pocker 6k Pro is a much better thant the Full Frame version.
It is simply physics, the focal plane distance and the mount flange distance. Now I'm a Sony slave, but I'm also a free man who owns a BMPCC 6k, so... @@CINENIMUS
