Monster Hunter Rise - PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S - PC-Style Graphics Options! - DF Tech Review

  • An excellent Nintendo Switch game transitioned beautifully to PC and now - finally - we have versions for the rest of the consoles. In this video, we're taking a look at the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series machines - but it's not really the comparisons that are interesting, more the way that Capcom has allowed users to configure their own visual experience via a PC-style graphics menu. PS5 and Series X even get the ability to render the game at beyond 4K resolution!

    Yes! I was hoping you guys would cover the Rise console Ports! Before i watch the video, my testing on the Series X gave me the impression that capcom gave us a completely unlocked framerate, with the presets simply adjusting the settings accordingly. I used the performance preset, increased image quality to 100%, texture filtering on high, shadows medium, enabled high resolution textures, and am averaging 90-120 fps on the lg c1 with freesync vrr providing a smooth refresh.
    Update: after watching the video, i will add on to the analysis by saying that ambient occlusion heavily impacts the framerate. Im sure if you use graphics mode preset and simply disable ambient occlusion, disable dynamic shadows, and lower shadows to medium you can keep the 4.8K resolution and retain 60 fps easily and then some.

      Because, they are getting ready for something new. There is gonna be a ps5 pro and Xbox pro/whatever. So games now need to scale further up but even more importantly, there's going to be a handheld Xbox and Playstation moving forward. I'm almost positive Xbox will do it. PlayStation, less so. Games will have to be far more variable on console. Microsoft, I'm 90% sure(my speculation) then will utilize the next gen amd apu to create a mobile Xbox series s. At that point, the Apu that AMD will have out will be faster than the series s allowing them to emulate the series s with a little bit of overhead. Microsoft isn't stupid. Shareholders demand that they have competition to the steam deck and it works perfectly with Microsoft's business model. PlayStation, has a much harder time doing it, not sure how Sony figures it out, but if it was me personally, I would just take the expense it and paid people to do it before I lose market share to Microsoft but knowing how executives are they're going to be too conservative. Infinite money Microsoft doesn't care. Gaming is extremely valuable. If Netflix is worth as much as it is, Microsoft games as a service is worth 4x that amount (350B to a trillion. You gamers are amazing cows to milk). Handheld is coming.

      The default HDR settings are kinda meh. I run Brightness at 20 and Contrast at 60 (saturation left at 0) on my CX and it looks significantly better than default. If the brights are too much, going 25/55 is a good setting, too.

      Ya. Some proper HDR settings would be nice. I think the game is asking for way too much brightness.
      It does generally give a good picture, though.
      I just left the settings on standard and used HGIG or Dolby Vision on my C2. Looks alright. Detail is blown out in the few highlights, of course. But overall, it presents well.
      Games really do need to have proper settings for HDR though. It's frustrating when a game has little to no settings, making it impossible to get HDR right.

    Went to do comparisons vs PC but interestingly the "image quality" option on PC has no 125% option, it goes 100% then 150%. Seemed to run around 160fps at 150% image quality at 4k in the snow area at 17:26 where the Ps5 is 65fps and the Xbox is 59fps. That's running a 4080 and 5800x, what's nice to see is that PC now also has DLSS and DLAA, glad to see Capcom embracing a lot of technical aspects on every platform.

    It's just unfortunate that the game isn't cross platform play and cross progression. If they would have had this, this could have been something I'd be playing all the time with my larger group of friends. But because of that, the friends who wanted to play with and join my friends core MH group that started back on Switch, can't. It really sucks. It is not strange to see PS5 outperforming XSX at high "4.8K" resolutions for this title or at higher frame rates. Given the nature of the rendering, it requires high fill rates, but relatively low compute. PS5 has the same number of ROPs in the GPU as the XSX, but they are clocked some 20% higher (if memory serves). PS5s GPU is better suited to high fill operations that are not bottlenecked by compute or bandwidth.
    This is what Cerny was talking about when he said "a rising tide lifts all boats" during the PS5 technology breakdown. FWIW, I would have made the same design tradeoff.

    • @lysandros765
      @lysandros765 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In addition to frequency difference RBEs are somewhat different between the machines. Each have 64 color ROPs but PS5 has twice the the number of depth-z/stencil ROPs compared to XSX. In matter of bandwidth in RDNA ROPs are directly requesting from the close GPU L1 cache and PS5 has 22% higher bandwidth on that pool.

    • @SeanLumly
      @SeanLumly ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@lysandros765 I was unaware of the depth-stencil ROP differences. That is interesting indeed.
      The PS5's GPU design may be an early indicator of a cultural shift in game design methodology: an emphasis on high resolution textures, detailed geometry, fewer and simpler shaders, and compute not directly tied to the rasterization pipeline.
      And I've never heard of RBE. What does it stand for? Is this a reference to RDNA RB or "Render BackEnd"?
      And yes, to the L1 bandwidth -- a significant benefit, especially for workloads well-suited to on-chip coherence (eg. index buffering, full screen render passes, gpu compute).

    I'll be very interested to see how the last gen machines hold up in this game given what we've seen here on the current gen machines and Switch. The RE Engine (along with Capcom's devs) is really an amazing thing to be able to pull off one of the best looking and running Switch titles and then to scale the game up so beautifully to current gen consoles. However, given the minor struggles seen by the Xbox Series consoles in comparison to the PS5 I wonder if this is a situation where it is simply easier to fully utilize all of the PS5s CUs running at their higher clock speeds as opposed to having more CUs but clocked lower? We seemingly saw a lot of this towards the beginning of the generation and then things kind of evened out but with this game seemingly being incredibly well-optimized and offering PC-like scaling on consoles that allow you to easily push the machines past simply locking smoothly at a framerate it seems like this may be the case. I'll be interested if any current-gen only RE Engine titles offer scaling features like these so that this hypothesis can be better tested when the least common denominator is the Series S and NOT the Nintendo Switch. Actually, I think Street Fighter 6 is going to be on the PS4 but NOT on the Xbox One so maybe that'll be an interesting case to examine.

    I hope after doing the prior-gen hardware comparisons. DF does the recent ports of P3P and P4 Golden. As I've seen some technical "issues" with the AI upscaling used by Atlus for both ports, the sound compression in P3P, etc. So would like any at DF who perhaps like Persona to do a full breakdown of the pros, cons, and decisions used to port these two games for other systems.

    I am a bit confused why the small FPS difference is talked up as so significant here, while it's heavily downplayed in a game like Death Loop.
    It's obviously not a lack of GPU headroom (as stated here) & more a developer priority thing, but it's just strange to hear this video talk it up so much when contrasted with previous videos that brush it aside (especially since it's reserved for quality/120fps modes & not the default 4k/60 mode).
