well it depends on what you want. I wanted something to play mostly gba titles, so i got the RG351P from aliexpress. It honestly emulates many retro consoles very well and its not too expensive. The hardware feels really good and it looks amazing aswell + battery life is really really good.
I still think homebrewing a regular console like a New 3ds or Vita is the best option for portable emulation. You get all the build quality and stability of a well made console with the constant updating and progression nature of emulators for official consoles.
@@zigzag4491 well i do agree on that, but not everyone is willing to work on modding a device. I just got myself one that works perfectly out of the box and i can add games by just doing drag and drop. But if you are willing to mod your device, thats definitely the best option

Best solution. Android emulation scene is quite advanced and phones are generally much more powerful than the little chinese units. I got a retroid pocket 2 and it's pretty cool but a phone would just give you so much more power and ease of use
btw, thank you for calling out the shortcomings of these devices. We need a ready to go device with a thought out, simple and elegantly designed UI. A clean UI, unified and elegant option menus with just the right amount of options for aspect ratio and clean pixels as well as good save state options. Finally and one thing you don't mention (that the S30 doesn't have) is a sleep function. These devices MUST have sleep mode to be worth on-the-go play.
Thanks for saving me $60 and giving an honest review on the experience. I follow a couple of big tech channels focused on emulation and have been burned by their opinions insisting it’s the best ever, only to have to deal with constant tinkering with cores/software/whatever else to make things run decent.
I know it's not the end-all, but I'm still really happy with my soft mod PSP as my handheld emulator, and it can connect to the TV with component or HDMI! Though it can't play Dreamcast, and it really can only play like 100 N64 games really well, it plays PS1 ROMs native and can handle anything else pre-Y2K and GBA flawlessly (at least what I've tried).
Nice thumbnail, caught my attention immediately. I probably won't be able to use this console because over the years my hands have just gotten used to the larger console controllers. I'll miss my time with the gameboy color/advance/sp but it's nice to see people still creating new hardware for those old classic games.
Thanks for this review. I think that you’ve helped me get some clarity on what the perfect handheld emulation device would be, to me. Especially when you said at 4:53 about valuing user experience. I’ve never manufactured something of the magnitude of the device I’m imagining, but it’s starting to come together. Basically the ultimate handheld Nintendo emulator through GBA, with maybe a premium version that could handle N64, GameCube, and Wii. The ideas are percolating...
The dude on the mega drive is the protagonist from yu yu hakusho. Still odd that they used him cause the fighting game he’s in was never really localized
When I discovered these handhelds a few years back, I studied them all and asked as many questions I could on youtude reviews. I decided on the PowKiddy X15 and I think its great!! 1 year in and still works great. I dont use it daily but it is the best handheld I think. I wanted an X18 but I KNOW that the repeated open/close will break the connection between the top and bottom units. PowKiddy X15!!!

I really think these handhelds just need android to be perfect. Retroarch is great once you learn how to change all the settings, and you can add any frontend. Imagine an rg350 or 351 with a snapdragon android 10 build
I just use a jailbroken psvita for my portable emulator, pretty much has all the positives you would want for one and its unique negatives (such as needing to jailbreak it and the storage) are either very easy to do or have easy work around that works very well. It has a strong homebrew community that is still going to this day and has enough power to run any emulator for a home console from the 90's (yes including n64) and any portable console that came before the vita (except maybe the DS). It can play psp games and ps1 games natively but normally locked behind the ps store (if you have psp games digitally they will automatically transfer over). But if you get adrenaline it essentially gives you a psp virtual machine which literally means when you boot up the application it boots up the psp firmware and you can treat you vita like a psp, this is where you can play your psp and ps1 games. The ps vita also has built in dual analogue support for ps1 games used via adrenaline and for psp games that had movable camera but needed some weird button hot key to move it, I'm pretty sure other emulators take advantage of this as well. Overclocking the cpu also helps, but the vita is actually underclocked by default to save battery, so you can set it to its base clock speed and it actually doesn't seem to affect the battery that much, I can get a locked 30fps in the god of war port using the base clock speed which is nice. The ps vita is all in all an underrated portable console and a great portable emulator.
I have probably 15 of these emulator units, and I finally gave up and bought a switch. I figured I’d return to the retro stuff when someone finally figured out the UI to feel streamlined like a mass produced unit. My favorite is the RG350M, but it still has wonky UI and software/hardware choices. I feel like we will have an almost perfect solution within the next 2 years. So long as you don't want N64, which nothing at the price point does well, the rg351p is by far my favourite, followed by the 350m and then the retroid pocket 2. Big things coming this year with a new wave of processors, upgraded gpu's and more ram though, I'm hoping we see a real bump in N64 performance for the $100 mark by the end of the year.
Emulators are already community-made. The very fact that these companies are so open to the community that they allow and sponsor community-made firmware updates is a huge plus, not a con.
The RG351P is actually more comparable to the RK2020, it's the same chipset (RK3326) as that and the Odroid Go Advance as well as the Powkiddy RGB10 and RGB20. I think you were more thinking of the RG350P, which is basically just a plastic version of the RG350M but with a lower resolution screen. If you liked the RG350M and the RK2020 you might want to consider picking up the RG351P or RG351M (the metal version comes with built in wifi as well). They have that Anbernic form factor and vibration which is what makes them stand out over the other RK3326 handhelds.

That is Yusuke Urameshi from Ghost Fighter / YuYu Hakusho. The anime is popular in Asia during the 90's hence why the maker included it.
