You need to use desoldering wick when you're trying to remove stuff. put the wick between the iron/board and when the solder melts the wick sucks it all up off the board.
Man, you really went about this the hard way. Crown pushbuttons, specifically the SDB-202 series, don't require any soldering and it's super easy (despite what the description says) to just pull out the switches and swap them with whatever else you have. No mods required and they are usually in stock at the arcade shops. And yeah, I feel you on that whole, "It's nice to know you messed up and not the game," thing. Xbox controllers are particularly bad about missing inputs on the face buttons and I really wish we could just move to mechanical face buttons now.
@@WulffDen Yeah, they don't fit in the 8bitdo stick. They do fit in a lot of other sticks though. Another thing to note is that they are not compatible with Kailh Box switches which is the type of switch you have in there now. You could switch them for Kailh Speed Bronze which are also clicky and have a compatible stem for the Crowns.
@@WulffDen just means you need to switch to a full fight stick! Allfightsticks has some awesome metal cases. Crown's use cherry silvers, half the travel of reds, really great feel.

Modding fight sticks, reading about button mods, and then research mx style switches is what eventually lead me down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole so uh. Word of caution to everyone's wallets 🤣
If I remember correctly, Sanwa buttons are hyped for the low actuation force needed for speedy presses. The sensitivity is the difference between them and the stock 8-bit. It’s been a fun journey following your quest for the best controller (I even bought the little keyboard controller)!
If you start using flux with your soldering it'll make it less painful. That's probably the easier and least costly of your options. It'll help with the heat transfer and make the solder liquify easier.
Huge props to Bob for making an actually enjoyable sponsor spot that feels genuine and doesn’t do that stupid “I actually don’t care about the product I’m just doing it for the money haha” gag. (I hate it when TH-camrs do that!) Good job 👍
That 8BitDo Fightstick is so good. I love mine It got me 3rd Place with it and people were wondering about the stick as they thought it was only wireless
I have long obsessed over stuff like this. I’m in my late 30’s, so I grew up on 2D games from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, and have pretty much hated the D-Pads of all modern controllers from the PS2/Xbox/Dreamcast era onwards. What makes my case unique though is that I was born with a moderate classified case of Cerebral Palsy. In short, I’m very dominantly left handed. My right hand is barely more than a fist. I can get a controller’s grip into my right hand, but I don’t have the motor control to move my right hand’s fingers or thumb at all. When I button mash, I’m flicking my LEFT arm’s wrist so the entire controller is being flicked up into my right hand’s thumb. I do not have the dexterity to use an arcade deck’s buttons on a flat surface. I can’t open my hand like that without extreme strain. I have tried everything under the sun looking for a good controller solution. Everything from modding an older SNES or NES D-Pad onto Xbox and PS4 controllers to using keyboard switches, but I’ve never had much success with it. What I need is just for a 1st party controller vendor to just make a decent old style D-Pad like we had in the SNES days. For those of you who want more info on how I play games on modern Xbox/PS5/8bitdo controller, I almost universally have my sticks and triggers swapped so I aim with the left stick, walk with the right, leaving the D-Pad as my 4 face buttons for jumping or attacking, and the left trigger for my main trigger button. Oh, and I play inverted, pulling back to look up. It’s become a running joke with my circle of friends that no one can play anything using my controller. But honestly, my control scheme is closer to what was standard in the 80’s and 90’s than what is considered default on most Xbox games today, so I don’t think it’s “that” weird. It’s been a godsend of this generation of consoles that button remapping has become standard on the OS level for all systems. That’s helped a lot. But I still want a modern controller with a classic D-Pad that isn’t crappy or mushy.
You might like 8bitdo's M30 controller. Its based on the 6 button genesis/saturn controllers. Ive used those controllers on my emulation set up so I can say these M30s are just as good if not a little better than the Saturn pads. The Saturn pad was my main 2D controller for a while, until I switched over to the M30. I have tried 8bitdo's SNES style pads and the Dpad is extremely unreliable. It hits diagonals with regular movement. What that means is crouching or unwanted movement. A good test was tetris. The blocks move to the left or right when they shouldnt. The M30 is awesome though and is the best Dpad out there that Ive found. I use it for most of the old games I complete on the channel. I play those on an emulation focused PC. The other benefit is built in rapid fire for all buttons. I like the controller so much that I use it for DLC and indie games on modern consoles with an adapter. It works out of the box on Switch and PC though. You can use it for just about anything with USB adapters as well. Durability is pretty good too. My first one lasted about 2 years and several hundred games beaten before becoming mushy and unclearly defined in the dpad. Much better than most modern controllers and only 30 bucks. SNK has an awesome pad based off of thier Neo Geo CD console. Its for the PS2. It has an amazing Dpad for fighting games that uses microswitches. Its like a hybrid of a very short thumbstick and arcade microswitches. Problem is, after about a month the dpad becomes very undefined and loses that sharp clickiness. It got way too expensive to replace though. I still got better performance from the M30 overall. The SNK pad was incredible for pulling off moves in 2D fighters with sliding motions though.
Bob, thank you for making such labor-intensive videos on such labor-intensive hobbies that I will never undertake. It’s endlessly fascinating and I can never let myself dabble with this.
The non-sanwa buttons feel the same when new but with just a little bit of wear and tear you'll start noticing that they kind of stick a little if you hit them off center.
I'm really glad you're shedding more light on the controller/ fightstick mod community. I Absolutely love Cherry MX Blues in my fight sticks and keyboards, but prefer rubber on all my game pads. After playing the switch Lite I can't stand the micro switches on joycons anymore. Even Sega Saturn controllers I wish had rubber shoulder buttons.
Oh god this is a rabbit hole I have been fighting falling down. There is something about fight sticks that I love. I have also been looking into these key controllers too.
When I got my Switch I HATED the joycon "d-pad." I immediately replaced it with the Hori D-pad controller because it felt more familiar. Then I was on a trip, forgot my Hori, and I was forced to get used to the joycon. After I got used to it I realized it is WAY better. 4 distinct clicky buttons allows me to give precise inputs and I never accidentally get the direction wrong anymore.
Snack box looks so sexy but at 200 bucks. Sheesh. Definitely something with hot swap-able switches. I’m not a fighting stick connaisseur, but I fell like you’d want something medium clicky for the buttons, and something like you installed for the dpad with less travel time, making it more responsive. I think the 8bit is a great deal to get into this.
Someone else in the comments mentioned the Crown/Samducksa 202's and I can definitely vouch for those. I have a multiple Hori RAP N fightsticks that I swapped out the buttons for the Crown 202's, they come with speed silvers standard, but on 2 fightsticks I swapped the keys for Cherry MX Greens. Clicky and tactile. Very satisfying. And, the 202's are hot swappable and very easy to do. Super easy. A kid could do it. Highly recommended.
@Kiibo Blues aren't tactile switches, they're classed as clicky switches. MX browns, clears and greys are probably the most popular tactiles by volume sold. To enthusiasts, however, those three are typically the shit tier, "I can't believe you actually type on those" switches. I like browns just fine, but contrarians gonna be contrary.
I love your content about this because I'm also into the keyboard rabbit hole and I love my fight sticks lol. I actually got the ODIN mod because of you and extremely happy with it!
Just keep in mind who you live with when it comes to these mods. Clicky keyboards and controllers will cause a lot of noise complaints especially if you play while people are sleeping.
Yeah, I really like the Crown 202's, which are hotswap, but they can be hard to get a hold of, especially if you're picky about colors (which I am). I haven't swapped the switches from the Speed Silvers it came with (IMO using a clicky or tactile switch in them would be super weird for me), but I might try some others now that I'm getting more into keyboards again. On my stick, any button is pretty loud (to the point where I'm considering adding some dampening foam to get that "thoccy" sound).
If you do try different switches, be mindful of their actuation point! I also have the crown 202s and there's an issue with the width of the button stem contacting the switch housing that makes it so the switch needs to actuate at a slightly higher point to work. Most other speed switches work and iirc some Kailh pro series switches also work. But I've messed with some more boutique switches for funsies and some of them actuate too low to consistently register keypresses. The tolerance is in the 1/10th of a mm so ymmv but yeah speed switches have been safe
@@mister3speed727 Im also using the Odin drop in mod for both my sticks rn. I don't play fighters competitively so I have a mayflash f300 and f500 (f500 doesn't have an socd cleaner stock but f300 somehow does). I also have two t-spin mods from MyrzArcade who works with Omni. The t-spins are like the Odin but use normal mx-style switches rather than Kailh chocs so they have way more compatibility but are also a lot taller
I made this OBS-MX mod hotswap myself with some soldering. It wasn't too hard. This mod is easier with box switches and I couldn't get a regular MX switch to fit in properly but a box switch the cap can go into the switch after a bit of effort. I'm using Moondrop Tessense tactile switches on mine.
This is the perfect application for double springing your keyboard switches. You would be well served, at the very least, sticking to VERY heavy (60g+) switches. But as I said, I would just go for the switch you prefer on a keyboard, and adding some extra spring, in the same way you would for a keyboard with heavy caps (like Cerakey keycaps). Honestly, with the size of the buttons, a 90-100 gram spring wouldn't be crazy at all, but the heaviest stock switch you'll find would be like an MX Grey @ 80 grams. And to be clear, none of those ultra-heavy stock switches are all that great. So I would try something like 'Kailh Speed Copper' @ 50g, and just doubling the spring by cutting out the bottom windings on a second spring, and winding it into the original spring. (sometimes you can get away with just winding two together without cutting anything, so that's worth a test too)
I'm feeling called out here. 😃 Having modded my own 8BitDo AS, they don't seem amenable to screw in buttons, which really limits your options. It is good to know that the box switches work with the PAS solution though; that's practically the only one I've heard of that works with that.
You can replace the springs in the switches to help with the bounce back. If you are using linear switches I recommend lubing the spring and the inside of the switch where friction occurs for the smoothest of smooth switch
I would suggest a better soldering tip preferably a chisel tip with the pin tip you don't get very good heat transfer due to the limited mass of the tip
Well now i see why the button wasn’t working lol. Helping hands will save your fingers for any future mods you have planned, i wish i got mine sooner. Great video as always, might have to get those odin switches when available.
I also recently got sucked into the wonderous world of controllers for games more specifically getting into the idea of using keyboard for fighting games to Increase my percision. I recently bought a vs fighter off Etsy from leafcutter cannot wait to get it and truly immerse myself. Having said all that wolf I've been watching your foray into modding the 8bitdo the passed week and I'm very interested. One day when I'm deep enough into the hobby I'll be referring to your videos to mod my own mixbox 8bitdo thanks for the inspiration wolf and hopefully putting more people onto the controller scene!
Coming from a keyboard nerd you did really good. Except you said blues are tactile, they're actually clicky. Box royals are one of my favorite switches. I'd also recommend zeal clickiez, they're a new really clicky switch.
As a fightstick user, i can confirm that although sanwa buttons are the industry standard, they are only SLIGHTLY better than the imitations that 8bitdo uses for their sticks (maybe the sanwas might last longer or something but i doubt it will be that different)
Nice mod. This looks interesting. I recently got heavily into arcade sticks and modding them. Ive been using the stick with most of my 2D playthroughs lately. The Seimitsu LS62 is a super responsive stick and has made a huge difference with being able to play a larger variety of 2D games. The hayabusa stick was great but a little too loose and too much deadzone for games that require more precision like shooters and platformers. I think the loose joystick works better for pulling off moves in fighting games. Im still using Sanwa buttons but if these were sold I would try them. Razer uses clicky face buttons in thier Xbox controllers. That was one of the only things I liked about the Razer controller. The rest felt cheap. It would be great to see clicky face buttons in more standard controllers too.
This custom keyboard arcade stick thing is one of those things ill have to do when I get a job again and have more expendable income. Im already coming up with an idea for making the stick hotswappable, because I wouldnt want to keep it a keyboard Dpad, sometimes id want the usual arcade stick. For now though I guess I can just use my keyboard...
Great vid, I just wouldn't say that a cherry blue switch is a tactile switch it's more of a click switch, it uses a click jacket to make the click vs something like a box whit / jade that uses a click bar. On my home keyboard I use box jades because they're just fantastic switches.
Up your soldering skills and you'd be able to install hotswap sockets on those boards. There's different types for key switches. You might like MillMax sockets, but you can also get Kaihl/Gateron hot swap sockets as well.
It's crazy how different peoples preferences can be. I prefer mushy buttons all the way when playing games. I find it much easier to spam buttons and find it less fatiguing over long play sessions. So far my favorite feeling buttons of all time are the Switch Light face buttons. I WISH my Xbox controller felt just like that.
You can convert components to be hit swappable. Mill-Max Receptacles is one example used on PCBs for keyboards so... Maybe look into that if you want hot swappable?
4:47 - oh no, don't tell me about low profile mechanical switches Part of the reason I've hated every mechanical keyboard I've tried was because they were all so damn tall. Now they've got low profile switches?! Nooooooo, I don't want to start spending craploads of money on keyboards again 😭
ha, looks like bob has the same incredibly cheap soldering kit that I have. doing my first desoldering project with it (a GBA shoulder button mod) taught me that you really do get what you pay for. I spent like two hours wrestling with those shoulder buttons because the iron simply wasn't getting hot enough unless I cranked it up to the max, after which the tips started to warp and change colors lol
You can solder in 7305 mill-max sockets into those so they are hot swappable 👍 You'll need 2 per button but it should solve your problem. You just have to make sure you clean all the solder off of the PCB with a decent solder suck and make sure you solder the sockets in flush so you don't have tolerance issues like you did with the globs of solder
Love all your content, these key-switch videos are always really interesting and give me a lot of ideas for hacking various button-having devices to include them
I would honestly like to see a mod of Arcade 1UP cabinets since all the buttons on mine have mushed out over time. I would also wonder if there’s a way to get even more clicky/tactile joysticks

Having modded my own 8BitDo AS, they don't seem amenable to screw in buttons, which really limits your options. It is good to know that the box switches work with the PAS solution though; that's practically the only one I've heard of that works with that.
I’m stoked Layer Shift is working on a hot swappable button!!!
I am sure somebody mentioned it already but tactile don’t have audible clicks, for example blues are clicky. Keep up the fun vids
Bob needs to make his own controller
"lubing it up made it so that they spring back up real nice." -Bob Wulff, 2022
I did not expect to hear the word lube so much in this video. Love this stuff
Thats awesome!
you can swap the springs inside the switches btw
I'm pretty sure the box navy and Jade are the same clickyness but the navies have heavier springs
What if you tried to make a controller from scratch. Like buying all the parts individually and assembling it yourself.
To help with the keycap weight you could do a spring swap to something that requires more force.
I just wanna change color buttons but this is a great option. I dig it
I used to this it was the glasses on hipster Bob that made him so unsettling but I think it much actually be the constant smile
You should look into millmax sockets. They are available on most keyboard part websites and allows you to turn any switch socket into a hotswap socket
Ah yes a much needed episode into the controller to keyboard transition madness
Love how far into the keyboard switches deep end you've come.
... Keep going 😈
Too bad Can't find ODIN V2 anymore :(
Can we just get Wulff Den Ads channel that is just the ads as seperate videos?
I wouldn’t mind an entire ASMR video of you clicking buttons
The preview image looks like you put two arcade-like tokens over those two buttons for whatever reason lol
Idk what your sponsors pay you, but I do know it's not enough. The only youtuber that I get excited to see the ad.
I love the way you say mario bro gets me everytime
Coming from a keyboard nerd you did really good. Except you said blues are tactile, they're actually clicky. Box royals are one of my favorite switches. I'd also recommend zeal clickiez, they're a new really clicky switch.
As a fightstick user, i can confirm that although sanwa buttons are the industry standard, they are only SLIGHTLY better than the imitations that 8bitdo uses for their sticks (maybe the sanwas might last longer or something but i doubt it will be that different)
Bought a Snack Box Micro based off your prior video. LOVE IT!
Bob you’re the freaking 🐐 your video quality is truly unmatched.
yo thanks bro
“This hobby’s for psychos and I’m just a brand new psycho!” Best one liner ever!
I love watching your mod videos. I've just started getting into trying to mod my own crap, so it's really fun to watch your videos.
I have two keyboards that use Jade and I think you just convinced me to use my extras on my switch
Yeah blues are definitely usually meant to be clicky, I wonder if he said it as a mistake or not
Bob, I have a lot of fun watching these controller videos. Thanks for sharing, man!
We had microswitch controllers back in the C64 days
Maybe look into that if you want hot swappable?
theres a low profile button on aliexpress called OCPK that seems to be what you want, you might want to check it out. its sold by sinoarcade.
4:47 - oh no, don't tell me about low profile mechanical switches
Part of the reason I've hated every mechanical keyboard I've tried was because they were all so damn tall. Now they've got low profile switches?!
Nooooooo, I don't want to start spending craploads of money on keyboards again 😭
I'd use that for Shmups! Love a good clicky button
ha, looks like bob has the same incredibly cheap soldering kit that I have. doing my first desoldering project with it (a GBA shoulder button mod) taught me that you really do get what you pay for. I spent like two hours wrestling with those shoulder buttons because the iron simply wasn't getting hot enough unless I cranked it up to the max, after which the tips started to warp and change colors lol
This guy is the only guy I watch ads on bc the ad script is just hilarious.
I will never use any of that but damn I love watch you talking about clicky controllers
There are some vids on 'making a keyboard hot swappable' - maybe you could use this technique? Great video Bob!
You can solder in 7305 mill-max sockets into those so they are hot swappable 👍
You'll need 2 per button but it should solve your problem. You just have to make sure you clean all the solder off of the PCB with a decent solder suck and make sure you solder the sockets in flush so you don't have tolerance issues like you did with the globs of solder
Love all your content, these key-switch videos are always really interesting and give me a lot of ideas for hacking various button-having devices to include them
The top tier videos on this channel are the ones that feature Bob kissy noises
When u splashed the latte on ur arms LMAO!!
I would honestly like to see a mod of Arcade 1UP cabinets since all the buttons on mine have mushed out over time. I would also wonder if there’s a way to get even more clicky/tactile joysticks
This is the guy that got me to get the 8Bitdo sn30 pro + for the dpad lol
