It doesn't utilize consumer psychology to capture the "Blue Ocean" and CREATE a market, it goes after an existing market and will always only hack off portions from it, which is diminishing returns. Only very large companies like Sony can succeed with that. You would have to create the online support for this which is beyond your scope, but that's an example. The e-ink screen could then browse Closed Caption text version of the novel, in case for example if the phone runs low on battery. The capacitive button function could replace controls EXACTLY the way they would work on ONLY the phone with generic software. This is an example how you corner an existing market doing EVERYTHING your competitor does, but ADDING to it. It could also emulate Nintendo DS games with the bottom screen in e-ink. This comment won't be edited nor will I come after any material credit or copyright of these ideas, this will serve as a full legal notice that these ideas are generic, unpatented, and fully in the open market.

Android is a priority!!!😇. Hey guys, so I don’t make it too clear in the video (mistake on my end 😂) android is super important to me!! I don’t have one but I know how big it is at abt 70% of users. And it’s actually straight up better at gaming. So this prototype actually already works great with android and I’ll showcase that in my next video. You can add MagSafe to anything with a simple metal sticker that will be included in the box. MagSafe is nothing more than a ring of magnets. And if you look up, (x) android phone plus MagSafe case on Amazon, most likely there’s a case out there for you. But I really don’t wanna ask our users to buy a new case hence the sticker. And actually the case I’m using on my phone right now doesn’t have MagSafe so I’m rocking a sticker!! I’m actually thinking of switching to an android to make sure that that experience is as good as possible with this device!!! Also, one big thing I want to mention, that I had a hard time fitting into the video but is in the description, is that the intro of this video is 178% summoning salt. It's good to see the transparency. "I’m actually thinking of switching to an android to make sure that that experience is as good as possible with this device!!!" Does that mean you may have a second SKU for android?
The Xperia play was even marketed together with... Minecraft Pocket Edition aaaaand Playstation 1 Emulation. I still wonder why noone used the gap left in the marked by gaming phones with real gaming inputs and filled it with something of quality...
@@rainboworange The very simple answer is the 3DS. The Xperia Play didn't make any waves. In a very large social group full of gamers of all stripes, I didn't know anyone else with one - and never even saw anyone else with one. A few of us had PSPs and DS. At the same time simple, touch screen based gaming was doing very good business on iPhone and Android. Beyond that, the 3DS as expected continued Nintendo's handheld gaming market domination even when faced with (IMO) the far, far superior Vita. Perhaps if the XP had come along with PSP power and compatibility that would've really created the 'PlayStation phone' market, but the reality was PlayStation had very little to do with it and Sony Ericsson half-baked it. For me, I'm much happier with a separate, dedicated device for handheld gaming. Picked up an Anbernic ARC a few months ago and it's been a blast. Might pick up a Retroid Pro 4 soon too.
the design is so impressive, man. with some good branding and crowdfunding I can see this skyrocketing into a nationally treasured product. great work bro :)
Protect yourself at all cost, this is something that I as a gamer only dreamed about. This is GOLD! Keep that drive that you got going and don’t let them talk you down or steal your product
as a android emulation nut, this scratches just about every itch I could have hoped for! I already use a magsafe case on my android phone so this feels like a no brainer to pick up!! whats even better is that DBrand (one of the biggest specialty case makers) have implimented magsafe into their android cases, so just about anyone could use this! i do hope that your future designs will make the back a bit more universal with its camera cutout so that many other iphone sizes or even android phones could make use of this controller
Awesome!!! I really want to make sure it works with as many phones as possible! We will have a couple top plates that would work perfectly with all the most popular androids and iPhone. Like conform as good as a case would. And also make sure it works with pretty much any case you would have in those phones. Then one that is slightly compromised. Maybe it doesn’t like perfectly conform with the camera shape. But it will work with literally anything. But if we get enough funding or if it is successful, the first thing I’m doing with the money is making more top plates so it works with as many phones as humanly possible!! Old, new, and five years in the future new! AND we will include a MagSafe sticker in the box! So even if you don’t have a case with MagSafe you can add it to your phone. I’m actually using one now. The case I’m using doesn’t have it! Even if we don’t have enough money or there is some crazy unusual phone out there someone want it to work with I think we make it 3d printable and release the STL so people can just do it themselves. The sliding rails can bought separately and added to a 3d printed top. That’s the plan!😁
A friendly suggestion, avoid using nintendo games when demoing and in competitions. Nintendo's lawyers are on a warpath. Stick to Crash Racing or similar instead. Good Luck, :)
@@SweetTodd They can't do anything unless they can prove you pirated the games. And even if they could it's not financially worth it to go after a single person, they go after people directly or indirectly contribute to piracy. So it's fine, keep doing whatcha doing.
They’d have to prove he pirated the games, also Emulation is completely legal in USA no matter what system you emulate on. Also Nintendo tends to only go after those who advertise places to download roms of their games or download their bios/firmware. Example Ryujinx and TH-camrs who promoted the usage of them and such.
This is SUCH A GREAT INVENTION! Seriously, it's mind-boggling that literally NO OTHER company ever thought about taking inspiration from the PSP Go's sliding mechanic. May your new company grow!
dude i'm not even 3 minutes in and i'm just having the thought that i've been looking for a phone controller that doesn't make me say "this is cumbersome i should just use my 3DS or vita instead" for ages and this is the first one i've SEEN that actually breaks that thought
I only see this product getting better. Thinner, better device/OS compatibility, lower latency, power delivery through reverse wireless charging etc etc. I carry a ps vita in my bag. This would not only replace my vita but probably make me want to play a video games again. I have never had respect for mobile gaming but this man has changed my mind. I wish you the best of luck. 👏

@@Stylez-13 I had a friend who had a Sony Xperia Play and it was the coolest thing ever. She mentioned that she could also hook it up to a PS3 and use it to play music from the phone through the console. And yes, unfortunately it failed as a product. But the difference between Josh's M-Con controller and the Sony Xperia Play is that the M-Con controller is detachable, and can fit any device it was made for (so far just the iPhones with MagSafe support). So hopefully, this controller will be successful.
@@MazharHuq I still got my xleria play for it on clearance at Fry's for $99 unlocked 😁 oh I see so an Xperia play type controller for any phone 📱 I can get behind that
@@Stylez-13 In fairness to the Xperia Play, I don't think it's a stretch to say it was a decade ahead of it's time when you think about the progression mobile CPUs have made since then, it's night and day, you can run X86 software on Android using compatibility layers now, I doubt anyone was even thinking about that in 2011 when the Xperia Play released Then consider the amount of third party support it would have at launch if it launched today with Steam Remote Play, Xbox Game Streaming, Antstream Arcade among everything else, back in the day I think OnLive was the only game streaming service and let's be honest internet connections weren't good enough to even bother, only reason it might not succeed if they did a V2 today imo is that it'd probably be as price prohibitive as it was in 2011 (Around double the price of a Samsung Galaxy S2 in the UK if memory serves)
I love how home-made this video is lmao. The controller spinning off a string, the grainy 3D printer footage, the button click sounds of the recording ending, it's all ironically perfect

Do you mean patents? In his community post he says he took down his previous video so he could do the patent work. That is why some of the clips are blurred .
Preface: I’m not a patent lawyer. From my understanding mag safe is an open standard. That is why you can get android mag safe cases and the manufacturers aren’t being sued by Apple. I expect the patent would be for the sliding, locking, removable rail integrated into a controller.
You're a smart person and passionate. Worst case scenario, if this project gets taken down, release the information for 3D Printing and custom PCBs to be manufactured for us!
im 17 and getting a 3d printer for my 16th birthday was what started me off on designing things. its so fun to be able to make any (scuffed or otherwise) 3d model and just have it there in person, in a couple hours, in my room. it's such an easy way to bring any random idea to life

Not only is it incredible and a revolution, it could be used for any smartphone with a magsafe sticker, it fits in a pocket as if it were another phone and most importantly, the format is so incredible that it opens a world of possibilities, a complete keyboard as in the old blackberrys? controls for photographers? a dac device inside with buttons dedicated to music playback, it is such a versatile format that it could be used for everything and be able to carry several in a backpack without feeling like carrying a closet

Young man, I’m not one to comment on TH-cam often, hell hardly at all. After watching this I couldn’t help but to say congratulations! Never stop thinking the way you do, finding solutions for problems that have been “solved” but changing the whole game as you do it is beyond impressive! This will be huge, and so will you! I always wondered why we never got any decent sliding controllers for phones, since the tech was already proven to be the best way to put buttons on a small device. Congrats on the project, it seems really great and I hope to be able to buy it one day.
There was the Xperia, and Razer Junglecat a decade ago. It's a relatively niche market. You're not competing with just other controllers for phones, you're competing with first party handhelds like the Switch Lite, handheld computers, second-hand handhelds and cheap third party handhelds too.
My man singlehandedly revolutioning the phone gaming market showing sony that they used to have good idea, but didn't do it the right way. If you'll have the android version on your kickstarter sign me up!
I've been searching for something like this since 2016 after 3 years of playing on my Sony Ericsson Xperia Play R800i. It was the best mobile gaming experience I've ever had. I cannot thank you enough for this project you're making. I'm preordering without a doubt
I have wanted this format for soo long and even took to designing a bulkier wired one a while ago using broken PSP go parts. Then life and distractions. 10 years later and you have this, which looks neater and slicker and overall is everything I ever wanted. Kudos and can't wait to order a few.
This is probably one of the best controllers I've ever seen, with amazing amounts of versatility. Kudos to you for sticking with it. I really hope it will be successful. I do hope you make different backplates and potentially sizes for different phones outside of the iphone, like samsung, google, and other large brand android phones.
As much as this generation is slowly crumbling, the mega dorks it raised that are now becoming the tech designers of today does make me happy, because we know what our generation wants in terms of tech and gaming while also meshing old ideas and classic design choices to bring in some of us adults and up! Keep on pushing this, please make an android version for launch too!
Your idea is really perfect. I really get goosebumps now after seeing your hardwork. If there is any mistake in sentence, then please apologise I don't speak english.
Mad respect Brow you invented the Playstation Phone. Just a few Years after Sony already did it. No really you did something awesome and I wish you a lot of success with it👍
Nice, man. I'm rooting for you. My uncle was a great engineer and just passed away recently. Something about seeing this video made me very happy. I love when someone comes up with a cool idea and is driven to execute on it. You never know which idea is going to be "the one" that changes your life (and the lives of others)! Cheers from r/SBCGaming.
I totally see it changing the mobile gaming scene. So exiting to get me one. You really solved all the problems i had with the controllers in the market rn and its only gonna be better from here on.
it's genuinely hilarious how the industry has not already jumped on this train and created this because this is such a brilliant idea. you are gonna go far kid. well done! my favorite part is definitely the use of 3DS circle pad sliders. i always wished the switch's joycons had these and always had this idea for a circle pad mod, but i never got around to it.
Unfortunately, the website shows a newer model that replaces the 3ds sliders with traditional analog sticks. But tbh I’m not a big fan of the 3ds sliders
A wild shuccle! The industry tried with the Junglecat and Xperia. It might not have been the best time for it, but this is a niche of a niche, so I'm not surprised.
This is the same reason that I actually fell in love with the psp go. The small sliding form factor makes it so small that it fits in my pocket for my day to day life. Even if the controller is for iPhones, I am so hype to witness this.
Dude, I’ve been telling people for a while how it was stupid they have not put discrete control sticks on a phone like the 3DS sticks. Your design is exactly what I had in mind. They slacking!
Sony did over a decade ago with the Xperia Play, iirc as a spiritual successor to the PSP Go. Unfortunately hardware of the day was weak, OS controller support outside of Xperia's dedicated app sucked, and the display ribbon cable was pretty fragile (My display failed around the 2 year mark). After that the market solidly slid into the black slate style of smartphone. This design though rocks, and avoids the issue of having a permanently attached controller.
Not only is the idea and design incredible, but the storytelling, video and production of this video amazing and done better than so many people with 100x better equipment. INCREDIBLE
this is awesome. I think the fact that it can detach leads to endless possibilities for different attachments. Maybe you can design a thumb keyboard attachment for people that prefer the tactile feel of a physical keyboard instead of a touch screen keyboard. Also different controllers with different layouts, maybe a 6-button configuration to make N64/Sega/fighting games more playable
Razer Junglecat for iphone 5: Am I some kind of joke to you? In fact, if you search for “Gamepad slider” you will find many such projects. This guy literally reinvented the wheel, but he still did a good job.
You should be proud of this device! I've been looking for something like this for about a year now and nothing compares to the design you've made. I signed up for the notification for pre-orders. Very excite!
As a game dev this thing actually solves a large issue when designing games for mobile gaming. Mainly that when using a phone the controlls themselves take up valuabel screenspace that is already limited on a mobile device. This is fine for some types of games, but it is very restrictive for many genres. Making a controller connected to the device a norm allows for more genres of games to be viable for mobile.
The thickness is still the problem. The price wouldnt be much of an issue for apple buyers but it looks like its atleast gonna be 50$ so it wont go mainstream on android land.
This is one reason why I am excited for the future of android games that are unique experiences for each android device (ie razr kenshi, backbone, Odin, Logitech G Cloud) the attachable controller or dedicated controller community is widening
Problem is this doesn't solve anything regarding that. There is still no reason for a dev to assume people will have these and have them on them. The only true way to guarantee such a thing would to have it built into the phone. Like Sony did a while back. Id argue a better Idea would be to make a controller built into a case design to just be on your phone all the time. Somehow making it thin enough for people to consider doing that
Ive never been more proud of someone ive never met. This is beyond exciting, i just subbed to the pre order email and hoping that it isn’t to costly when released, im looking forward to picking one up
This controller just hits, not only is it great for gaming on your phone the fact it can come apart and use it as a standalone controller while your phone can be connected to a tv or something can literally replace consoles especially if you have good enough internet for cloud gaming
I am very happy for you. I am also glad you mentioned Android support. Amazing! Also, please heavily consider ensuring the device can be repaired by the end user, such as swapping out failed sticks or batteries. Ensuring the device isn't glued shut or the battery is glued to the device would go a LONG WAY to ensuring you don't create e-waste. Please remember the fight for Apple to do the right thing and help be a part of the repair revolution!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Yesss!!!!!!!!!!! Yes yes yes this comment makes me so happy. I am a HUGE component for this. And not just repairability and ensuring longevity. And selling replacement parts. But I want the customer to OWN what they have just paid for. Meaning I’d like it to be mod-able. I really think the modding community. Could be big for this. That WOULD mean open sourcing the STL and STEP files which I may not be able to do. But it’s something I realllyyyy want to.
This really puts into perspective how the handheld gaming scene started to die off. I forgot how nice it was to have a game console in your pocket. I’m really excited for this project!

@@AnubisTheSonOfRaThen don't use it. This thing is focused on portability, compromises will always be expected. In this case the controller literally slides out of the case like a sliding phone, there's is no way to have this kind of portability with regular sticks. dude invented the Xperia Play and I'm not even mad, I've wanted it back for years
He things he invented something new and Xperia play is like hold my beer 😂... Hopefully this succeeds unike the "PlayStation phone"
He invented the phone case Xperia play controller.
And im amazed by that.
I loved my XP.
Shame the idea didn't stick. It had loads going for it and XDA just made it shine. Bit underpowered, but great for emulation.
Take it easy, man. It will sell pretty well, but it's hardly gonna be on Apple's radar.
@@harrydavey9884everything starts somewhere :)
Already a thing years ago. Just look at the Bladepad.
as a android emulation nut, this scratches just about every itch I could have hoped for!
@eternalprogression this is amazing, so exited to buy one when it's ready!
You sold me on this in your first Reddit post. I hope this comes to Kickstarter soon so I can support it! Can’t wait to get my hands on one
This is 1000% gonna be a hit especially with the fact that its so compact and light

Also Nintendo tends to only go after those who advertise places to download roms of their games or download their bios/firmware. Example Ryujinx and TH-camrs who promoted the usage of them and such.

The Xperia play already did it and failed
@@Stylez-13 I would have loved to have one. Too young at the time to just request a phone on a whim

@@MazharHuq I still got my xleria play for it on clearance at Fry's for $99 unlocked 😁 oh I see so an Xperia play type controller for any phone 📱 I can get behind that
@@Stylez-13 In fairness to the Xperia Play, I don't think it's a stretch to say it was a decade ahead of it's time when you think about the progression mobile CPUs have made since then, it's night and day, you can run X86 software on Android using compatibility layers now, I doubt anyone was even thinking about that in 2011 when the Xperia Play released
Then consider the amount of third party support it would have at launch if it launched today with Steam Remote Play, Xbox Game Streaming, Antstream Arcade among everything else, back in the day I think OnLive was the only game streaming service and let's be honest internet connections weren't good enough to even bother, only reason it might not succeed if they did a V2 today imo is that it'd probably be as price prohibitive as it was in 2011 (Around double the price of a Samsung Galaxy S2 in the UK if memory serves)

they did, i don't know why the kid keeps saying he's the first one to make it. try googling sliding phone controller

@@bulletpunch9317That and heat, don't mind playing on my phone but I ain't trying to hold a ho slab of metal later 😅

Damn the transparent prototype at 6:28 looked so cool! I hope somewhere down the line you release either translucent colour or plain transparent version variants like the one at 6:28 you displayed. I would 100% pick one up!! Congrats on the work, you've put some serious innovative creativity and designing into all of this, genuinely hope you all the success with the project! :)
Saw you chatting with Retro Game Corps on Reddit about this. To be clear, if you do this right, you’re about to blast the fuck off.
I love retro game corps and I just discovered this today. Can you point to where RGC talked about this?

wow wow wow, dude this thing is amazing. I've been looking for a controller exactly like this for years, signing up for that preorder notification rn. Cant wait to see this in the future
