This happened to my sister. They took the credit, then they added their own fees. The car went from 24999 to 32999. I was sitting there shaking my head, she looked over and said "No".
In general it’s common practice for dealers to require their salesman to say “No” back to the customer 5 times before they start to give in and say yes. The only thing you can do is cite the FTC’s laws which say it’s illegal for them to force the customer to pay for something of which the customer didn’t agree to and want. Additionally if you didn’t ask for them then they shouldn’t have to be required. You are there to buy the car, and can accept or reject additional changes. Do this with the finance guy if you can, not the sales guy
@weich1q2w This is worse than just taking on fees. Their own fees made the vehicle ineligible for the credit. There is nothing to negotiate either the car qualifies or it doesn't.
i walked away from one that was like this. They wanted to add almost 7k in taxes and fees. I walked away and hung up. They called me an hour later and said they removed all the fees and would only charge taxes. They were trying to charge 1299 for "doc fees" + 699 for "form filing fees" (two in the same thing). Dealers are the worst, I with they would just be better.
That happened to me they said 24999, I came and they wanted 29999 out the door. I said no. We went back and forth. I finally convinced them to give it to me for 21000 out the door. Took 4 hours and some angry people trying to make me feel bad that I am "lowballing" them. If they play games so will I. I got the $4k EV credit. So I paid $17k for a car they wanted $30k for. A month later the battery died and Tesla replaced mine with a brand new 2024 LFP battery for free and I got an extra 100 miles in range.
Please do a video on everything we need to check, including how to access the tests on a used Tesla. I have never owned one and will likely be buying one.
I’d walk away immediately where the brakes had issues as well as the AC coolant leak. Next time, FaceTime or Google Meet the dealer rep so you can see the car, have them test drive it, and report back to you. Having low tire pressure before a car is ready to be sold is a lazy I don’t give a shit about you but only care about making the sale dealership.
@@cyclopsvision6370 Though to be fair, only Teslas currently offer that sort of feature built into the car with Service mode, and it's not likely that Ford salespeople are going to be extremely familiar with it. Many other cars you'd have to take it to a mechanic and have them run some tests to determine if there's other underlying issues.
If you find a dealer that are listing cars with "advertised price included $4,000 tax credit" clause when the actual sale price is above the $25,000 threshold and keeping the tax credit for themselves, file Form 3949-A for suspected tax violations. The IRS can refer reports to the DoJ for investigation and possible prosecution.
To qualify for the used EV rebate the vehicle has to be 25K or less and that includes all dealership fees, but excludes taxes and required registration fees. If the dealership is registered, it can be applied at the point of sale, however, even if they are not, you can still apply for the rebate when you file your taxes as long as you have the tax liability, whereas at the point of sale, you do not need to have the tax liability and there is no recapture. You can also qualify for the tax rebate in a private sale by using an online dealer, such as keysavvy. Also keep in mind, the vehicle cannot have changed ownership after August 2022.
One thing to note, in order to qualify for the credit when you file your taxes the dealer is still required to fill out an IRS form. There's no punishment for the dealer if they do not, and the IRS guidance just tells you to ask the dealer to fill out the form. If they're not willing to take the credit up front, I would run far far away.
Did the IRS change the requirement to get the 4k tax credit, that the car had to be a 2021 or newer? When I got my 21 M3SR+, I only got the $4k because it was a 2021. If I got a 2020 or older, it didn't qualify. Ended up paying just a hair under 21k for mine. Best car ever.
@@MitchyTheKid4095 The credit was always defined as "model year at least 2 years earlier than the calendar year" So if 2021 counted when you bought, 2020 would have also counted. Hopefully that's not bad news for you. To be fair most EVs had a big improvement from 2020 to 2021 due to supply chain issues in 2020. www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/used-clean-vehicle-credit
During a roadtrip, whenever I had to force a split, I always look for the oldest Model S and split with them... odds are if they haven't had the battery replaced or just plugged in below 15%, then you're not cutting into their charging speed.
yeah he's like theres too many issues then he went back and downplayed the shit out of everything he said .. but the buyer appears to know how to work on cars so he didn't care.
Total BS that the dealer would say that they are not honoring the 4K tax credit when it was already discussed and agreed to. So, lucky to have a friend like Kyle to help navigate this purchase. I helped my daughter and we pre-negotiated everything and then drove 7 hours to pick up the car. When we got their everything was honored and we paid and left. The next car I purchased for myself was pre-negotiated and they did try to back out of the deal when I got there after a 4 hour drive. No dealer in Central Cal can match deals in Southern Cal. It is ultra competitive in the Oxnard and San Diego market based on my experience when buying in 2021. The bad guy routine was done by a different person at the dealership and when I asked what is happening and are you trying to back out of the deal and I have it all in writing and will show it.. then he said no we will honor it. Then I ask, then what are you doing, he just smiled and said everything is okay. It was like a slimy attempt to see what they can get away with. I was very pissed but just wanted my deal and to leave with my car. Always, pre-negotiate and share your deal with other dealers to get the best deal and always have it in writing. I would never negotiate while there at the dealership, they will play games with you and try to wear you down. This year, March 2024, I bought a Tesla and it was the smoothest transaction ever and great deal with close to $5000 in inventory incentives, 5000 free super charging miles, 3 months free FSD. It was $38K after discounts and tax credits for a model YLR with white interior and tow hitch. Plus, Central Cal San Joaquin valley just got more funding and are offering $3k rebate so that will put my price at $35k not including taxes and registration.
@@samchoonday9777 Email and texting are both legitimate forms of correspondence. Never, accept a verbal agreement, always get it in writing and get the salesperson to agree to all terms of the deal that you are looking for. Some will want to say, we can discuss this further when you visit us but do not accept. I did this with 2 cars, one for me and the other for my daughter. I traded in my Honda Clarity for more then I paid for 2 years ago after all the EV rebates and tax credits I got. I then got a Tesla Model YLR in March of this year and got another fantastic deal. $38K after credits and rebates (not including the added reg and sales tax). Plus I am going to get another $3k San Joaquin Valley rebate which will put my total @ $35K for a $50K car (I got the premium white interior and tow option). I think a Model Y LR is a great deal right now with the 1.99% interest rate. I paid all cash but there was no good interest rate option when I bought but there were great inventory discounts.
@@inRienn In all my research, SoCal had the best deals in all California. Norcal and Central Cal dealers said no way they could match the deals in SoCal. I ended up buying a car in Oxnard and in San Diego. I would have gotten both in San Diego but they did not have the exact configuration that I wanted. The San Diego dealership was hands down the most smooth car dealership transaction. I just went in, signed the paperwork on an agreed upon deal and drove off with the car. Zero BS! The easiest car purchase ever was my Tesla because everything was done on the app but there was no negotiating on the deal. You just need to hope for Tesla to announce inventory discounts and grab that specific deal at the end of the quarter or special interest rate deals.
Watching the Electric SuperCar channel and immediately thought of the symptoms you guys were experiencing. The reason the coolant is low is because of the damaged motor cooling loop that he changes in the latest video. The sounds you are hearing is not a loose motormount but a dying motor. Probably will need to be replaced rather than repaired at this point.
I think it's due to the "single cab long bed truck" effect. You sit further forward in the M3, also might be wider in the back then expected. Causing you to take turns tighter than expected. Curb rashed my wheels in the first week.
Waste of time for Kyle. He’s the Tesla expert. He drove 1000 miles to help a friend. He gave expert advice and after inspecting and driving the car, recommended that Tijman pass on this car. Tijman ignored his expert and then signed 2 contracts because the dealer didn’t understand the tax credit. Dealer wins!
On the flip side its a cheap car. All the oldest cheapest ones are going to have some level of issues. It would be rare to find a perfectly maintained one for the price he paid. So overall "okay" deal.
@@jermwertyExactly. I don't understand the process of buying a car in the US - but the bottom line is what does it cost you after the serious problems (kerbed wheels and a few scratches are not that) are fixed? Is it still a good deal for a 2018 with 'low mileage'? 🤔
Did i miss it? Did he ever say "dont buy it" to his friend. He did say it to another person who was off video. He did list the pros and cons and let his friend choose to purchase or not purchase.
Can’t wait to see the Martian wheels he ends up choosing! Also would love to watch a video on working on all the “small” fixes. Risky but he has a good support system with Kyle and friends. Kyle - sell that Plaid!! It’s a piece of rattling junk
Bought mine in May 2024 and went through this exact same process! In order to qualify for the IRS Used EV credit, the sell price from the dealer has to be under 25k inclusive of all the 'dealer packages' (BS). Not inclusive of taxes and the usual dealer fees. Hope this was taken into consideration! Also, if the car isn't transferred in the app, you cannot use the Supercharger network. Had to wait a few business days to get it transferred to me because it was purchased from a 3rd party dealer. Glad yours was almost immediate! Lot of asterisks in this buying process. Hope you guys got back all right and the car is good! Loving mine!
lol i legit got a 2021 model 3 performance for 22.5k last month. they just took the car 3 days ago to replace the battery because it threw an error code and wouldn't charge. works perfectly for me because the battery health was bad. 88k miles on it at purchase and i already put on 5k miles before the error. i think Tesla is going to keep the car for a while so they gave me a loaner in the meantime - long range model 3 2021
Two thumbs up. Would like to see a series that help explain what to check out when considering buy a used Tesla. Hoping Kyle will share his knowledge of the computer system and known issues with Tesla’s.
Congratulations on the purchase. I probably would have walked, you at least got a good deal, and if the issues are somewhat minor, a great deal! Enjoy, looking forward to updates.
I’m willing to bet this was previously a Hertz ride share rental that the dealership bought for cheaper and up charged on it for the lower mileage …I wouldn’t have bought it tbh, but once you have your heart set on something it’s hard to walk away
I bought a used 2021 model 3 standard plus rear wheel car and I had to dump $2300 worth of repairs that the former own had done to it improperly. I had to have Tesla fix all the work that was done improperly on the Tesla. Had to put $1300 new tires on the car as the shady dealer I bought it from put non EV tires on it that were cheap and new, but I didn't know the difference. So my &20,000 used Tesla isn't such a good deal now. Hopefully, I've corrected all the problems found with the used Tesla. I love it. but it was driving wonky using FSD--that is how I found out improper repairs were made and the tires were shit. Buyer beware. Buy used teslas from Tesla--might cost a little more, but you won't have any surprises!
I bought a used Chevy Volt 2018 for 19k, with 61,000 miles at the dealership, they had all of these crazy fees, they charged me a 1000 dollars for some type of interior stuff that they put on the leather seats. Processing fees 2k, I probably should have left and got me a car from Carvana. They didn’t want to honor the used tax credit of $4000, but I was persistent so they did.
Enterprise Car Sales of Fort Myers Florida was selling some 2022-2023 Chevy Volts with 14k miles for $14,000 a couple of Months ago. I was tented to pull the Triger!.

Then we bought (for business)a 2022 model 3 long range for 11k had broken rear Differential i'm happy differential all fixed under warranty. Then we just made 6k off a 22 model y standard. But we know these cars inside and out. So we do very well.
Tijmen, congrats on the new ride. If you ever track down that clunk sound in the brakes, please let us know what it turns out to be. Kyle, I'm surprised that you got caught on the trip without the adapter. My NACS adapter lives full time in my Mach-e. (in fact I have two adapters, but that's an entirely different story). Great video. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Great video. I really want a Tesla and want to have a step-by-step video of what one would look for. Particularly how to access those maintenance menus. How many are there? What order you perform them, etc. Are there detailed videos like this already out there?
When you drive 8 hrs each way to buy a car, the dealer has a big advantage over buyer. Walking away from deal is very difficult when you’ve got so much invested. I don’t recommend buying a car this way. Kudos to Kyle for knowing how to test a used Tesla.
Every time you mention one or more things, even afterwards you say, it doesn't worry me that much, it's because you are really very unsure and nervous about whether it is or will be a problem, and that deep down you regret the decision you have made, but do not want to admit it to yourself and others.
My first Tesla was a 21 M3 Dual Motor and it had no record of an accident, but once I had the car and removed the frunk bucket, I saw the paint marks, a mount part from a different color car and the hood hinges were bent. Some of these are repaired without reporting. I returned that car with a threat to out them and they took it back. The close gap on the frunk lid to the bumper has me concerned, but it could also just be from a light bump where that dent came from. You can loosen the screws under the bucket and adjust that gap a little. Overall, I still think it's a good deal.
My 2021 Tesla M3P has Scruffs everywhere besides the wheels and it’s never been hit etc. Teslas paint is literally just that bad. It scuffs from the sun, rain, and being wiped down/cleaned. The cosmetics on this vehicle are not bad at all for this year.
I just scooped a '22 Model 3 for about 20k last week too. I've been super happy with my '16 Soul EV all this time, but I figure I try this out before EV3s become available.
for the tires, you can look at the serial number to see if they are newer than the car, so maybe they were replaced. what does it look like underneath? i wonder if it was used as a Turo rental, due to it's exterior condition
I got my '21 M3 a month ago... I called Tesla support, explained I was buying a car from a third party & told them I was driving home that same day. I asked if there was any way they could expedite the transferal process since I needed the car in my name so I could set up supercharging in the app. After submitting proof of purchase, VIN, and ID, they had it done within 2 hours! Mind you-- this was THE Friday of the nationwide IT Outage (July 19th).
I watched this entire video man, great content. I'm supposed to be picking up my 2020 M3P tomorrow and very excited. Also got mine for $24.9k haha. Will be following your diagnostics process before I finalize the deal.
Aye congratulations to Tijmen on his new Model 3 man! Love seeing how older EVs hold up over time, this one seemed really amazing, especially for the price! Hopefully it treats him well, also always nice to see EV haters join the club haha. 😄
I myself just recently picked up a 2018 Model S 75d for 21k out the door. Almost perfect condition with some minor small blemishes but nothing a used car doesn’t normally have (some curb rash etc.). The choice was either the model S or the same year model 3’s for the same price. Sat in the Model S and my mind was immediately made up. I’ve been in multiple model 3’s and if for the same price you can choose either I would always pick the S, such a nicer interior with similar range aspects to a 2018 model 3 long range.
I bought a used EV this year and delt with so many issues with dealers and that tax credit. Dealers either were not interested in taking the credit, which if they don't file the paperwork you can't claim the credit on either end, OR they tried playing the game of taking the credit on a car that doesn't qualify because they're overpricing the car and you would owe the credit at the end of the year. This should be illegal on the dealers part both ways. If the dealer is not including the tax credit at time of purchase he should have walked. There is not a gurantee that all things would line up right, but in order for it to apply at purchase the dealer would have to at least submit the required IRS paperwork.
Great video! I recently purchased a 2018 Model 3P black on white with FSD, 67k miles, got it for 25k, I unfortunately do not qualify for the credit because I am in college and a dependent on my parents taxes. Crazy value for money!
That route for superchargers, I've driven it a few times and those level 2s are ALWAYS packed and slow. Also, Evanston is notorious for being ICED. People always park there when they are at the hotel.
We just bought out the lease on our Niro EV knowing that we could have driven to the next state over and bought a similar car for a little less. After seeing this video, I don’t regret our decision.
My parents are in the process of looking for a used Mach E and most dealers don’t want anything to do with the tax credit. Some even say that it’s not a thing even after I show them it on the IRS website! I feel like the IRS should force dealerships to sign up at this point. I truly just hate dealerships.
OMG we've been to that Rawlins, WY supercharger on our trip from NY to Idaho and back. That Burger King sucks! They couldn't get any order straight and took a LONG time. Then we saw a gal with 2 kids come in that I recognized from a previous supercharger stop. She told me she had ordered ahead of time on the app. Nope--no order ready for her and it took forever to get her and the kids anything. The only good thing was we decided to sit and eat there and so charged up a lot. [Plus, you have to walk across that wet, rutted dirt lot to get to it.] Never eat there!!
Tymon, Check the Date code on the 12V battery. It should have been replaced by now, especially if the car was in AZ. I got 5 years out of mine in WI a colder climate, also in a 2018 3p stealth W/w. 5 years is about the most you’ll get before needing to replace it. They are $85.00 from Tesla or $120 installed. The date of Mfg on my original battery was 8/18 as in Aug 2018. I got a screen message stating the Low voltage battery needed replacement, it was 5 years to the month last year.
The compressor is probably going out. On my 3 it had the exact same issue and turned out the compressor harness had rodent damage. 6 months later it finally kicked the bucket and rendered the car undrivable until it was fixed.
From what I understand and what Tesla reps have told me you have to find a car that’s under $25,000 after taxes and fees. You can’t get the $4,000 credit if a car is listed at $24,999. It realistically need to be like $23,000 so all the fees make is sub $25,000 still.
Typical car dealer "Bait & Switch " . They knew you two wouldn't drive 7-8 hours and just walk away. A good lesson for all car buyers on what NOT to do, when car shopping...
I enjoyed this video a lot. I will file it and refer to it as needed. I would have been on the fence buy/no buy also. but he did the right thing. I wish you would have shown some research that showed us comps for other vehicles being sold. I cant see him doing any better than that. I frequent that super charger in Salt lake you went to across from Cosco and like it a lot. Wyoming needs about 5 more super chargers. I bought my Y in Chicago and towed a small trailior from there to Vernal Ut. and I had to drop the tralior and got to next super charger in the negative. not such a good first drive in my electric car. Im still sooo glad I bought it.

Hands down one of the most real life vlog, first pull and warning light pops up
this is like a scary movie where the characters keep saying meh its fine 😭😭😭
😂😂😂
If you find a dealer that are listing cars with "advertised price included $4,000 tax credit" clause when the actual sale price is above the $25,000 threshold and keeping the tax credit for themselves, file Form 3949-A for suspected tax violations. The IRS can refer reports to the DoJ for investigation and possible prosecution.
You can also use that form if your dealer sold you a car that was eligible and never provided the IRS seller report.
This was great content. Highly suggest a segment on using all you guys know about EV’s to review used EV’s to help people buy their first EV
@@MitchyTheKid4095 The credit was always defined as "model year at least 2 years earlier than the calendar year"
So if 2021 counted when you bought, 2020 would have also counted. Hopefully that's not bad news for you. To be fair most EVs had a big improvement from 2020 to 2021 due to supply chain issues in 2020.
www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/used-clean-vehicle-credit
@@MitchyTheKid4095I just thought the used EV vehicle had to be at least 2 years old..
Yes IIRC it is technically 2 model years not calendar years
During a roadtrip, whenever I had to force a split, I always look for the oldest Model S and split with them... odds are if they haven't had the battery replaced or just plugged in below 15%, then you're not cutting into their charging speed.
"im gonna tell him to back out of the deal"
2 mins later: "its good just a few clunks"
Kyle is nothing more than a talking head.
yeah he's like theres too many issues then he went back and downplayed the shit out of everything he said .. but the buyer appears to know how to work on cars so he didn't care.
😂😂😂
And now the follow up video is out and.. Maybe he shouldn't have bought it lol
How do I have it in writing? Like an email? Does it need to be signed by a manager or something
do you think its better to buy a used EV or any car in general in the SOCAL area or NORCAL area?
Make sure to replace air cabin filter, check underneath the car, and check the tires obviously! Congrats dude! Great video!
I feel like it's REQUIRED for model 3 owners to curb the wheels.
I think it's due to the "single cab long bed truck" effect.
You sit further forward in the M3, also might be wider in the back then expected.
Causing you to take turns tighter than expected.
Curb rashed my wheels in the first week.
I’m a careful driver and I’ve curbed the wheels on both mine!
Fsd just curbed mine for me a couple days ago 👍
It’s exactly this. Owners, not drivers.
I think people can’t drive in general. Nearly every car I come across, Tesla or not, the wheels always have curb rash.
Tesla has revolutionized so many processes, their car buying experience deserves so much more love.
It's the way should be.
Too hell with the middleman! Make mine Tesla or Rivian or Lucid!
2 contracts doesn’t even sound legal. I would have walked instantly with half the BS with this car.
Same here
THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T DRIVE 950 MILES to look at ONE car!
This was different though.. They got PAID to make this Sponsored Content.
@@FFVoyager car price and then state tax and federal tax sometime the car dealers try to add fees…
Did i miss it? Did he ever say "dont buy it" to his friend. He did say it to another person who was off video. He did list the pros and cons and let his friend choose to purchase or not purchase.
when they were driving he said "id walk away" a few times
2021 seams to be a bad year for battery’s model y and model 3s
@@BIGKickz23 I agree, had a failure at 30k miles on our 21 MYP, bought used from Tesla with 15k miles.
Now he can use his TH-cam certified mechanic license to fix that new Model 3! Congratulations dude!

We need an update video on the car regarding how it has been running, what fixes you did etc
Here in the UK you can get 10+ M3P 2019 under £22k with less than 50k miles
60+ M3p under £25k

Same in Norway.
Am i the only one who is amazed that the Model 3s infotainment system is working so fluently for being 7 years old Hardware?
Yes
Just got a Blue Model 3 with 17k miles on it under 30k! fully packaged out with boost, FSD (one month) , and premium connectivity (One Month)

Good observation.
You are my 78th favorite Tesla TH-camr!
He's not a Tesla TH-camr. You new here?
Would love to see the ongoing updates/repairs on this car, such as topping off the coolant, etc...
As a former independent car dealer. Never get emotionally involved . Run the numbers as you said. They made more, another is a few days awesome.
That "used EV VIN is only eligible once" is going to be a fun one to deal with a few years down the line with the 3rd/4th/5th owner.
Very common for 2017.2020 Model 3's to have low coolant error after a couple years, they underfilled it at the factory to save money
I just scooped a '22 Model 3 for about 20k last week too. I've been super happy with my '16 Soul EV all this time, but I figure I try this out before EV3s become available.

I had a whopper yesterday. Was very good.
The model year must also be at least be 2 years old to qualify for the tax credit.
And thats why used car dealer have such a great reputation.
Wish I had your help when getting mine. Dealership refused to do Tax Credit at Point of sale and all the local ones in my area dont budge at all.

Wrap the roof white (pearl) to make the car much cooler. I did that with my white Model Y (San Diego) for a night and day difference.
