The actual shape of the wheels matter less for those wondering. It's entirely possible the surface of the 20in wheel with the aero caps is more aerodynamic than the 18in Martian wheels used here. Bigger difference is the massively wider 275 rear tires on the performance model versus 235 in the normal model. Plus the performance model has more sticky tires whereas the 18in tires are optimized for low rolling resistance
yes, tire is a big factor. the 20 uses high performance summer tires while the 18 inch one uses all seasons that are also optimized for low rolling resistance. The wheels help, but so do the tires. It's probably closer to 8-11% difference if the 20 inch one used the same hankook tires

Kudos on comparing 2 cars like that. It's impossible to replicate conditions for comparison purposes - driving a "control" car against your "test" (at the same time) car is a great way of doing this!
This is exactly what I did on my 2021 M3P. The wheels have been bulletproof and amazing. Range has been great. I have 18 inch summer and winter sets - which was key for better road comfort too for that model year.
So cool you are doing this. I never liked those 20 inch big rims, always wanted smaller rims. Better in every way except maybe looks and that isn’t a priority
Interesting test with good result for the 18" wheels. Kyle's attention to detail to eliminate variables between the cars is appreciated. One thing that was not controlled is the unit-to-umit variation between the two cars. Swapping the wheels from one car to the other, then re-running the test would help cancel that out.
Got Nokkian R5 EV tires for my EX40 this winter. Was shocked when I didn't lose daily range after the swap. Thanks for letting me know about them Out of Spec!
Love the look of these MW08s. I got 19s for my M3P since i didn't want any issues with clearance. One drawback of the 19s is less tire selection though. Seems most manufactures target the 18" size for EV tires.
So it looks like the uphill range impact was +20 miles and downhill real-world range impact was +40 miles with the 18s vs the 20s. Very impressive! I have to assume that the fact the 20s have aero covers helped them a bit too. I'd imagine that if the Martians hypothetically had good aero caps, we'd be looking at maybe another 10-15 miles extra range on top of these already big gains. Based on my calculations using an 80KWh battery pack size (yeah I know that's slightly inaccurate), the M3P on these 18s got upward of 255 miles real-world range on the uphill leg and 314 miles (!) on the downhill leg, all in near-freezing weather. Even running the stock 20s it was getting 235 miles uphill and 273 miles downhill. That's fairly incredible. My old 2018 Model 3 LR (on 19s and Michelin PS AS 4) would have been hard-pressed to manage even 220 miles average real-world range at these temperatures, sometimes I wouldn't even reach 200 miles. This new car on the 18s is averaging ~285 miles and on the 20s averaging ~255 miles. And the older model on paper supposedly had more range than this new M3P does! Even at 80mph, this new car on the 18s could probably do ~250 miles even in near-freezing weather. Theoretically you could drive from Atlanta to Philly needing only three charges even in winter. In my old car, I had to stop at least five and sometimes six times doing this route in the winter. Insane improvement. Funny enough, I just slapped on some ultra-lightweight 18 inch Atomic wheels and the Hankook Ion Evos to my own new M3P yesterday. Can't wait to see these kind of efficiency improvements myself! Though I'm so torn on putting this rocket ship into Chill... 😆
You don’t want chill mode anyway for efficiency because it lowers battery temperature. Just don’t accelerate hard on insane mode and you can replicate the feeling of chill mode. Kyle probably would’ve had even more range if he used insane mode and took it easy.
Thanks for the vid! There are quite many 18" wheels that do fit the performance. I would say the tire brand/model and and steppning down to 235 square is what is doing the most for the efficiency
I put 18’s on my 2023 M3P and get about the same results. My wh/mi falls in around 230’s to 240’s on highway at 70mph-75mph. In the city, I‘ve gotten as low as 188 wh/mi. But normally 190-210.
Great result ! Love that kind of apples-to-apples comparison. Maybe the cars were already a bit different (SoH & other efficiencies) but more than 10% is huge !
I originally put snow tires on the stock uberturbines and bought MW03s for the summer. After replacing 3 of the low profile performance snow tires due to nails and blowouts on the pothole ridden streets of Colorado, I bought the MW08’s in 18 inch variety to get some more sidewall for the potholes. Just put them on, looking forward to the range improvements as well

Thank you, Kyle and Alyssa, for this test on the Model 3 Performance. I am sure that i can get the better efficiency for the Model Y Performance if I went square as opposed to stag sizes.
Thanks for doing this and taking care to make sure both cars are 'the same.' That's a good improvement in range, and kinda sad too. I guess the P car is designed for just that- performance. The only thing that I can think of to make this comparison more 'fair' would have been to throw some weights in her car to approximate your weight. Oh, and the white interior is probably faster too, right? :) Thanks again! Always enjoy your videos.
Weight matters little in an EV, and basically not at all at constant speed. Plus, the driver weight difference is offset by the wheel weight difference.

Speaking of the staggered wheels. I hate how Volkswagen did it on a non performance vehicle. No reason for it. Just fixed that issue today. Bought a pair of the narrow wheels that are on the front for the rear and put 245/50/20 tires on it all the way around.
I'd love to see a range test on the M3P where they use the photons with aero caps plus the Hankook Ion Evos, or alternatively the EV01 wheels that have aeros. Might not be too much different than the Martians here, but it would be cool to see how aero caps on 18s on the new M3P might yield even better efficiency gains than seen here.
Impressive test setup. You should add weight to car where lighter person drives If you want to eliminate driver weight variable. Or you could swap driver every 100 miles or so if you want to eliminate driver weight and driving style variable.
Nice! I am awaiting the arrival of 18" MW08's for my 2024 M3P (of course I ordered just before the sale). I assume you changed to the 18" Aero option in the car's wheel menu?
Great video! Just a heads up I have the same Martian MW08 in 18x9.5 on my 2023 M3P and I found that if the wheel weights are all the way in the back of the barrel they will rub against the front upright hub assembly. I’m running 255/45/18 so not going to see those kinds of range improvements but I have also not seen any range loss by going with wider tires. The ride quality for me has been significantly improved compared to the stock Uber Turbine wheels. I will never go back to 20” wheels!
Square setups all the way. The only time I wanted more was P85D at WGI, on classic early MS 245s, all around. My tested ~4klb M3P, on 275s in back is too much, IMO. Heck, Taycan's biggest turn off to me was 315s(?). Over-tired cars = less range, less fun.

Martian (and TSportline & others) should come out with some aero caps for their wheels. I'm really surprised they haven't done this yet. I think if they had optional aero caps, they might do quite well on a range test. I have a set of 19" Titan 7 TS5 wheels on my '19 M3P, and while they look great, the aero efficiency isn't great. In fact, it was worse than i thought it was going to be given the weight savings that they provide (rims are 19 lbs each). If Titan 7 made an aero cap for those, I'd totally buy a set. Any, it'll be interesting to see how this test shakes out.
PS - I also have 18" wheels for my winter setup, but I forget the brand of wheel (it's not Martian/TSportline). Got them used when I had my Kia Stinger GT. And as a tip for M3P owners, any 18" wheel that fits the Kia Stinger GT will fit the M3P also as they have the same bolt pattern & offset. Center bore is different so you may need some hub-centric rings). So that could be a source for some no-tesla-tax inexpensive wheels for the M3P. 🤣
I am curious to see model 3 performance with stock wheel but low rolling resistance tires! The stock wheel with aero covers looks to be more aerodynamic than those Martian wheels. So I wonder if the range improvement was just due to the rolling resistance improvement. But even if it doesn’t at least you get another video for us to watch.
Kyle, if they make 18" wheels for the Model Y can you test those too? I wouldn't mind 18" wheels for the Y, for a smoother ride and better range would be a great bonus. Also there's more all terrain tires for 18" than 19" if I ever wanted to do more camping and overlanding.
I made the 18 inch aero wheels fit. You just have to grind down the rear calipers, super barbaric yes but I touched them up really nicely. You can barely tell. Aero wheels for the win.
Just curious on the car with the 18’s did you go into the service menu to change the wheel size configuration? I believe that changes the cars computer range and speed calibrations to account for the different wheel sizes. Great comparison test!
@@bnort1040 sure though even smaller changes can still produce results that may indicate a better performance than actual. I haven’t watched it through yet, did he mention the tire brand or width differences at all? Wonder if the Hankooks are a more eco focused design and if they also were a 275 rear section width as opposed to the normal AWD setup which is a square 235.
Kyle what's your opinion of the Michelin CC2's ? I hear they have the best anti hydroplaning results, which is my biggest fear basically. I'm concerned about road noise and range loss though.
This isn’t sponsored, we have been asking for this, as viewers, for weeks now. 4 skippable ads? And TH-cam ads? Don’t like it, well you’re using a free service, they have to be paid somehow.
When are you going to do a range test of the Gen2 R1S with and without the aero wheels? People are claiming they make no difference since Rivian doesn't claim any additional range, but it would be interesting to see actual data on standard wheels vs aero wheels (with aero caps) vs aero wheels (without aero caps)? I'm guessing there is a reason Rivian doesn't add claimed range for the wheels probably related to them not doing an EPA test with them??
Tesla should offer at least 1" smaller rims for all us people wanting Performance cars but skips that one just because of the comfort and range decreases with the big P rims. They could sell the 1" smaller rims at the same price. Many would opt fort that option and not buy the LR. That would mean higher average selling price for Tesla.
Would love to get an idea what the best performance tire size is with this car if you want to run a square setup and want the best driving performance rather than efficiency.
I would be really interested to see what the dual motor long range can do if you use the S3XY buttons commander to put the car in rear wheel drive only. Could you get close to the efficiency of the base car with a bit more performance when required and also the better sound system??
Hi Kyle, Tesla just installed my new 19-in winter wheel and tire package on my 2024 P3. LMK if you'd like to do the range test on that, to compare to the 18 and the 20 in this video.
I wonder how much range those same wheels and tires would yield on the LR AWD Model 3. The EPA range for that car varies dramatically for 18” vs 19”wheels.
It looks like the stock wheels have the stock performance tires too. This range increase is not all down to the wheel diameter, but also the tire compound and section width of the tires. Not exactly a like for like comparison between wheels.
Please swap the wheels and rims on the new model 3 and the old model 3 from your previous old vs. new model 3 video and see how much that affects efficiency.
I would assume with the smaller wheels and greater sidewalk for the tires = more comfortable than the larger wheels combo at the sacrifice of cornering feel/performance.
Interesting there are such large calipers in the rear, usually this is the case in the front. I suppose those cars are heavier, and no heavy gas engine in the front, so rear braking is more important...
Alyssa is like “ yeah, yeah right … whatever”. LOL!!

@khan209i look up EV01(+) and EV06 wheels. Also, I use Nokian One All-Season tires. I have a whole video review of both if you want to watch 🙂

So nerdy, love it!
alyssa always brings the humor
I am curious to see model 3 performance with stock wheel but low rolling resistance tires! The stock wheel with aero covers looks to be more aerodynamic than those Martian wheels. So I wonder if the range improvement was just due to the rolling resistance improvement. But even if it doesn’t at least you get another video for us to watch.
What tires did you use for the test? Winter tires? How much of the 13.5% increase is from the wheel vs. the tires?
I wouldn't have thought that there is such a big difference. Maybe 5% but not 13%
Kyle, if they make 18" wheels for the Model Y can you test those too? I wouldn't mind 18" wheels for the Y, for a smoother ride and better range would be a great bonus. Also there's more all terrain tires for 18" than 19" if I ever wanted to do more camping and overlanding.
Great video! What is be your number pick cybertruck or m3p?
Having a smaller 18" in winter wheel can mitigate some of the range loss of the colder temperatures.
Out of spec reviews, the title "13,5% range increase"
Kyle, what wheels did you put on your Audi. I have a 2022 Audi Etron Quartto. Can you recommend a Martian wheel ? How much improvement on your Audi?
I made the 18 inch aero wheels fit. You just have to grind down the rear calipers, super barbaric yes but I touched them up really nicely. You can barely tell. Aero wheels for the win.
Going to order these once the tires on the current 20 inch performance wheels need replacement.
Kyle set the screen to dark mode for max efficiency. (and its much more visible on video)
Kyle, does Brandon’s M3P have matte PPF?! Looks amazing and am trying to decide between these two colors
Just curious on the car with the 18’s did you go into the service menu to change the wheel size configuration? I believe that changes the cars computer range and speed calibrations to account for the different wheel sizes. Great comparison test!
Good point, if the tire diameter is different it would affect the displayed mileage and efficiency readings.
He mentioned a couple of times that he believed the tire diameter was the same as stock, verified by 71 indicated still being 70mph.
Model 3 Performance

Kyle, you are the man, love your content.
Kyle what's your opinion of the Michelin CC2's ? I hear they have the best anti hydroplaning results, which is my biggest fear basically. I'm concerned about road noise and range loss though.
I thought my family was the only one that called seat heaters bacon! 😊😂
Love Alyssa but she seems to be so uninterested! 😂😅😭 I love how Kyle directs her every move! You guys need a reality show! 👌🏾Hilarious
And if you used the same type of mic in both cars? Big difference in noise too.😉👍🏻
Now we just need a test with the previous model 3 with photon and areo wheels.
I can’t wait to do a square set up on my performance!!!
4 sponsors on an already sponsored video, with ads is wild.
Loving my MW08 Martian wheels. I went with Bronze 18s with max tire meat 255-55-18 Michellin LTX m/s so Im ready to rally
is your turn radius any worse? which wheel width did you get?
No rubbing lock to lock. I should have kept Cross Climate 2s which are quieter but having this meat is awesome

I meant to attach a pic and made a short.. wtf
Assuming the microphones are identical between the two vehicles, the new tire/wheel setup sure sounds vastly improved on the noise front.
This begs the question on how well the martian style wheels would improve mileage on the Long Range Model 3.
Do you know if the 18” Martian wheels are more efficient than 18” photon wheels? I have a highland model 3 long range.
It would be interesting to do this with others like Coleton's EV6.
I would love to see a similar test with the ioniq 6 limited to see if it's worth getting some aftermarket wheels.
I have the MW03’s from my 2021 that I kept when trading in for the 2024. Know if they will work well on the 2024?
Wondering what results would be if I just keep same wheels but put winter tires on them.
What's the true difference in the end? It due to the smaller diameter wheel, lighter wheel or combination of both?
Curious how much weight did the wrap add to the M3P and if he noticed any difference in range?
Can we get more EVs (especially trucks) range tested with different / lighter wheels and tires than they came with from the factory?
How do you think the Martian wheels would do compared to standard 18" wheels?
Have you compared the weight of the wheels with the tire ?
Hi Kyle, Tesla just installed my new 19-in winter wheel and tire package on my 2024 P3. LMK if you'd like to do the range test on that, to compare to the 18 and the 20 in this video.
great video, going to get 18" when im done with the 20" tires
What about acceleration? 18 inch should be lighter did you feel big difference? I feel that on my model 3 LR with boost..
Yeah from what I can find online the tires on the Martian wheels are definitely more efficient.
Please swap the wheels and rims on the new model 3 and the old model 3 from your previous old vs. new model 3 video and see how much that affects efficiency.
is the car to the left the quicksilver color?
What about overall comfort ? How bumpy was the ride / how much of comfort had to be compromised for the range ?
I would assume with the smaller wheels and greater sidewalk for the tires = more comfortable than the larger wheels combo at the sacrifice of cornering feel/performance.
Ah these r smaller wheels..I missed that..u r right then
Interesting there are such large calipers in the rear, usually this is the case in the front. I suppose those cars are heavier, and no heavy gas engine in the front, so rear braking is more important...
I might have missed it - how cold was it? Won’t the model 3 performance summer tires perform worse in the cold?
38 degrees. Can’t you not drive summer tires at this temp? Or did Brandon’s car switch from summer rubber to all seasons?
@@wendystacos7447they are fine. They just harden as the temps drop.
