We all know this was inevitable.
Also, I want to point out something I’ve never seen anyone talk about when it comes to the GM Quel.
The ones that appear at the end of the 0083 anime are visually distinct from the lineart and later modelkits/action figures (the most obvious ones are the lower legs resembling those of the GM Custom and the lower arms resembling those of the GM Kai). This could mean that an early/rollout version existed prior to the final production version. (an IRL explanation could be that the animators/artist either made a mistake or received an earlier sketch)
When was the sinanju not considered a gundam.

About time we finally got a Development History for a Gundam, albeit I would’ve preferred starting with the OG RX-78-2, but this works as well because doing a development history of the OG would’ve resulted in a massive series that probably would’ve resulted in a spin-off for the GM/Jim series of MS

The way I see it, there are two answers to this question: an "on paper" answer, and a "inner mechanics" answer. The "on paper" answer, would be that the Hazel II became an official Gundam when its name and model number were changed from RGM-79Q GM Quel Hazel Reserve Unit to RX-121-2 Gundam TR-1 [Hazel II]. This was when the "Little GM Quel that could" was officially rolled out of storage and pushed into service. The "inner mechanics" answer, then, is that the Hazel II became a full-fledged Gundam when it was further redesigned into the RX-121-3C Gundam TR-1 [Haze'n-thlay]. By this point, few, if any, of the parts of the original GM Quel Hazel Reserve Unit remained, being mostly parts derived from, or intended for use by, the Gundams TR-1 and TR-6. The other incarnations between these two points, then, are a gradual phasing out of specific components, gradually making the Hazel II less of a GM Quel, and more of a Gundam.
Those be my thoughts on the matter, at least. What do other peoples think?

Loving the Advance of Zeta content. You can notice the Titans descent into madness as the designs move closer to the Zeta proper series.
As much as I love the AOZ MS designs, they kinda felt too advanced for its current timeline. Don't get me wrong but they more or less like they would fit more around CCA or Unicorn.
Either way, great video. This unit is like a kit modder's wet dream

My question about the shield booster is: *why tf would you put rocket propellant in something that’s supposed to get hit all the time*
I guess they've learned that hard way during testing, so they didn't replicate this mistake in any mass produced suit ever again :P

Technically, Booster Propellant detonating isn't LETHAL of a MS so long the cockpit area hasn't become exposed, it's rsther that because Shields for MS are SUCH EXPENDABLE equipment by design that both sides wanted SOMETHING else to validate the use of so many Materials to mass produce a piece of MS standard gear that gets deatroyed every single battle
Rocket fuel is rather fine imo, as level of damage would depend a lot more about the AMOUNT in the fuel tank.
Stupid is to have the shields be equiped with AMS ROCKETS such as the Revil Ship Jengans, since it's a DEDICATED MS combat weapon, having it detonate FAR too close the MS torso is the most dangerous aspect as the shield has to take it into account when being designed and it raises far more issues (i.e: it has to have a Blow out zone to redirect the explosion if it gets hit, this means some sectors are less armored and become weakspots, further making the purpose of having such a Shield useless)

I think it stopped being a GM Quel when nearly all the GM Quel parts had been removed- so I think somewhere around the Haze'n-thley.
I know all of this lore was made post Zeta Gundam but damn I wish we had gotten some animation of these units vs the AEUG and the Zeta Gundam. The freaking Titans were busy between the end of Stardust Memory and Zeta, geez. Where did the Moon Gundam come into play?

The escape pod reminds me of some of the R9 variants from R-Type.
Well the Quell was used as a technology test bed/experimental unit, while Gundams are usually "prototypes" which then get turned into weaker mass production types.
So one could argue the Hazel was never a Gundam as it was not a "Prototype", it did not spearhead a new design series but was testing what would later become a new unit.
Rivaling a Gundam in strength doesn´t make a MS a Gundam, otherwise the Gelgoog would be a Gundam as well.
However the MS has proven to be remarkably versatile, allowing vast modification of even substential system elements. Kudos for the Quell.
Despite it not getting any screen time the GM quail is probably one of my favorite GM

First generation is 0 Gundam.
Second generation is Gundam Astraea, Gundam Abulhool, Gundam Saadalsuud and Gundam Plutone.
Third generation is Gundam Exia, Gundam Dynames, Gundam Kyrios,Gundam Virtue.
Fourth generation is 00 Gundam,Cherudim Gundam,Arios Gundam,Seravee Gundam.
Fifth generation is 00 Quanta,Zabanya Gundam, Gundam Harute, Raphael Gundam.
With the Gundam head comes the Gundam name and lineage.
It's definitely not when the head is replaced. Or else striker custom would've been a Gundam as well. I would say the moment it becomes Advanced Hazel is where we can call it a Gundam.

Being a Gundam has a lot to do with looks and performance, but to me what really defines a Gundam... is the Pilot. Bright said it best, there's a kind of destiny involved in it.

if we go off what is said in Crossbone anything with a blade antenna and two eyes is considered a Gundam (by the media in-universe at least) I personly go off when it's designated as one so in this case when the changed the model number

This suit in a sentence damm with the amount of configurations it has I would never stop fighting give me the gigantic arms and attach 4 mega particle cannons and missile pods and 2 shield boosters to the legs and I’m happy
@@fernadogonzalez2940 I never used the Advanced Hazel in GB3 but when I saw it for the first time it looked wild. I mainly used the weapon it came with and the legs for the orange abilities to merge.

If the Titans hadn't screwed themselves as they had or had a less tyrannical view, they could have established possibly the best military force and step away from the Federstuon entirely.
So you telling me they can put all these cannons on something based on the GM Quel at the start without it overloading the generator? I like to imagine the generator would be bigger than the ZZ's at that point. A GM generator would be wheezing like an asthmatic in a 25K marathon at that point...
When they replaced the entire torso of the thing I imagine it also got a more powerful generator.
That seems to be the case since after the primrose upgrade the reactor's power is no longer mentioned.

At which point...? Well i believe when it change the code number. Because "gundam" itself just a code name. For example: F/A ZZ gundam x FAZZ and zeta gundam x zeta plus
My point, even there are units with gundam head type, not all unit are using name "gundam". Some unit are using gundam appearance as paper tiger, but the unit's name aren't gundam. In this case, GM quel reserve unit. It is officially become "gundam" when it changed its name to: gundam TR-1 (hazel II).
Then, Blue destiny unit 1 is not add name "GM". and so, blue destiny unit 2 & 3 are not add "gundam". Also pale rider/todesritter.
Another example, unlike mass product nu gundam, mass product z gundam (not zeta plus) and zz gundam both are bearing name gundam although the unit are not using gundam head type.
How did the Titans ever lose when they made stuff like this

I'd argue that the TR-6 is more modular.
That thing has 16 different configurations and at least 5 of those are huge, like the Inle.

@@fishpop yes, however the tr-1 and tr-6 are mostly interchangeable as control units for the big attachments. The only real difference being the drum frame on tr-6 allowing it to mount ALL THE THINGS

This is basically what happens when one suit becomes a damn legend and does not get destroyed enough to scrap. I seriously fear the fact this thing started from one GM Quell. this makes me wonder, what would happen to RX-78 units that just...survived. like how many kept getting the Hazel treatment.

There is seventh...but we can only speculate, I mean the og Gundam was pretty outdated in comparison to the Gundam designs that came after, the reason was due to advances in technology going into the frame of the mech, the cockpit could have been adjusted to be a working version, however you lose the ability to eject via fighter craft, besides that the only upgrades I can see working would be engine upgrades, thruster upgrades, weapons upgrades, allowing it to carry ammo for a clip-fed beam rifle or other equipment, loss of the fighter for a linear cockpit, and if they even wanted to try it, add psycho-frame to allow it to respond just on thought, however, the mech would retain its size and out height practically all of the mechs that came after the battle of Aboa Qu.
If we count Thunderbolt as canon, Fleming's FA Gundam would survive and sortie against the Atlas with the Reuse Psycho Device Mk. II (for greater irony, Daryl Lorenz was the Thunderbolt Mk. II's pilot, assisting Levann Fuu's Psycho Zaku Mk. II).

Still, I wish the AoZ designs were more what the Titans suits looked like in Zeta like rather than the more alien Zeon-esque designs.

tbh gabthley, hi-zack, galbaldy beta and marasai (especially when you take off its helmet) all looks more zeonic than the actual axis zeon suits, so whatever. If anything, AoZ designs shouldn't look more advanced than even the f91 era suits (seriously, how they're powering up all those crazy powerfull guns?). They should also scale down on superweapons, but that's the problem with gundam stories in general - you either end up with colony drop or a gigant superlaser.

The Hazel certainly looks way more advanced looking and hi-tech than the stuff in Zeta Gundam. For one thing, all that special equipment and upgraded forms looks exactly like the stuff you’d see in an original unit from the SRW series; namely the Huckebein MkIII in particular.

I think the explanation would be that all of the experimental technology used on the Hazels is the raw uncut forms of them with a bunch of guts sticking out whereas when this tech would be used on mass produced models it was cleaned up more. Sorta like the innards of a computer looking super high tech until you put the case on them and cover them up for safety

Well, Titans need numbers during that stage of the war being surrounded from all sides, so, ya, Barzam is the ones they left with, with possibility that it was strip down from the refined Barazam design to ease production. Too bad that a large number of them lost when harman ram Axis onto A Ba a Que.
From a simple GM Quel to an incredibly deadly Gundam. Now, that's some impressive progression all for a mass produced mobile suit that's known to do absolutely nothing on-screen.
i would say.... the Hazel II woul be perfect material for a "Plunderer" Gundam, a Gundam whose Specialty is having NO ISSUES WITH ANY GIVEN PIECE OF EQUIPMENT OF ANY SIDE, including FCS compatibility.... would make for a rather TERRIFYING FOE if Piloted by a DECENT PILOT (at least on the level that can give NEWTYPE ACES a run for their money and even have decent odds of beating them ), Imagine it suddely picks a Zeong II arm with Beam cannon fingers, just reboots it's inner systems them starts spamming.... and even boots the Psycho Hickjackers it has, and as soon you destroy said arms, he has a Hyper Bazooka plus a pair of RMV cannons running and targetting you...
I love how the v-fin for one of these TR-1s looks like an angel statue.
Yes it literally is an angelic v-fin. I believe it is also able to greatly enhance its communication and sensor suite (making it an ideal commander unit) and enhancing phycowaves, allowing to better control the ludacris amount of weapons it can carry, in addition to looking amazing.
It does look angelic and beautiful for a mobile suit named after a rabbit.
That's a fantastic question. Obviously it became classified officially with the designation change, but I think that the moment it became a proper Gundam was when its performance exceeded that of the average mass-production units of its time. We're talking a big difference and not something like 0.2% better.
I would have never thought that a Mobile Suit whose source material is heavily inspired by a (Surprisingly violent) book about rabbits could be so freaking cool!
I really hope Advance Of Zeta showd up in Super Robot Wars one day!

As someone whose never read or seen anything under all this "Advance of Zeta" title (if that's even possible for a non Japanese I speaker to do, I legitimately don't know), I struggle to imagine what it was this Hazel unit even did throughout its lifetime. It feels like it could have easily destroyed most of the new mobile suits seen in Z Gundam's first half, even if it is just a GM Quel under all that extra equipment.
Probably destroy modified gm 2s or nemos under aeug control

I still think this thing was a "gundam" from the start. As in a experimental suit to just throw things at and see what sticks. The Hazel's development history is just insane. A gundam for me will always be hi-end super prototype or a experimental unit to field taste new doodads. Sometimes both.

AOZ needs an anime. It to me is the most interesting of all the gundam stories. Plus! I'm a huge fan of the "bad" guys, the Titans.

The TR project was buried while some of them defected to Mars Zeon (TR6 line). As for the Hazel, it was believed to be scrapped since EFF have sub contracted out all of their MS development to AE until they form the SNRI and just bought off the shelf Jegans and some test units that AE develops.

to it's enemies: as soon as the head was replaced
to the bureaucrats: when the model number got changed
to the pilot: when they switched out the cockpit to make it the Owsla. until then, it was still using the control layout of a GM.
to the engineers: it's a bunch of modular parts, and you can put them together in different ways. none of the /parts/ are gundams. they're just arms and legs.

My MG Hazel Reserve Unit kept the white forearms and the cheeks of the Hazel II Early Type (I needed the Tri-Booster for something else).
Ah, the hazel. A development tree that goes from grunt to newtype equivalent skill in 10.3 seconds, and stays there.
I think at some point the Hazel traveled to the future and became a V2 Assult Buster
