Being an Experienced Golfer at 65 - I used to have issues chunking wedge shots. I began placing more weight on my front foot - ball in the center - and opening the blade face a little (for more bounce) which improved everything. On "Shorter Touch Wedge Shots" I will place 75% of my weight on my front foot and just leave it there. No weight shift or much rotation at all. I let my lead shoulder come back proportionate to the shot needed and let gravity return the wedge into the ball. My swing effort is limited to matching the height of the backswing on my forward swing to land the ball on my targeted landing area. Your videos have improved my game tremendously. In fact, I had my All Time Low Score last week. A 73 (35/38) which is one under "Senior Par 74" at my home course. [Scoring: 1 Eagle, 3 Birdies, 10 Pars & 4 Bogies (10 GIR, 8 One Putts, 4 Up & Downs to Save Par with No Doubles & No 3 Putts). As you can tell, I am rather proud of that round. I credit your videos and reading, studying & applying the teachings in your book THE BAD LIE for helping me achieve that score. Thanks Coach Todd! All the Best, Jack in Tampa
Today i left myself at least 5 shots with my wedges. I was driving it beautiful, leaving myself 60-80 yards to the green, but couldn’t approach correctly. Thanks for this video. I will go to the range and only practice wedges, PW, AW, 56 and 60
Funny story, played a round yesterday. Shot really well, except for my wedges. Kept blading shots not getting under the ball. I went to talk to a golf shop concierge about extending my wedge shafts. He looked at em, looked at me. And said there’s nothing wrong with these lengths, go learn how to hit your wedges. If you can’t figure it out, here’s my card. I was very pleased with his honesty. And here I am learning how to hit my wedges. How can you not love this game
Consistently solid, thorough videos that offer clear instructions and purposeful content. Still a relatively new golfer and have been practicing a lot over the off-season, and your videos have been invaluable. I particularly like how you break down the swing components in a way that is easy to understand and follow for someone of my skill level. Thank you so much for all your help, Todd. I watch all of your videos and will continue to do so.
Appreciate these kind words! It is a total team effort on our side. Too many people are making golf more complicated than it needs to be. We got you! 👊
100% agree with how you explained the club bottoming out behind the ball, if trying to swing too flat, and around(inside/out). Also, playing the ball too forward almost encourages an over the top, steep, outside/in swing. I was a block/hook type player for awhile. I played the ball a little too far back, and was swinging a little too “flat”. I’ve recently corrected that, through my own trial n error, and experimentation. I have to “feel” like I’m swinging over the top to get myself on the “correct” plane. Feel and real are totally different things for everybody. That’s why I strongly encourage people to play around with extremes, whether it be grip, path, or ball position. And remember, your contact, and ball flight will tell you all that you need to know. Period. I understand the golf swing more than I ever have in my life, and can now correct things in my own swing better than ever, even during a round. Great content, as always.
I've used the "one leg" drill for years. It works great but I have a very difficult time repeating the results when I go back to my regular stance. If I shift weight at all my low point becomes very inconsistent.... Any more advice for how to help get those same results from a normal stance? I'm sure I just sway more.....
Thanks Coach! I'm going to play tomorrow and will try it at warm up. Yesterday I played in a friendly competition and came 5th in my group. If I did't mess up the last 2 holes I'm sure I would of come 2nd. Next time for sure I'll be shooting for 1st.
Thank you. The weight shift is an amazing tip. You should really sell those sliders. That’s my last swing thought before I pull the trigger. I hear that sound. My wedges are finally becoming my scoring clubs.
Thanks for posting, hope you are finding the information helpful. If you enjoyed this video, you would benefit from our book THE BAD LIE which you can find on Amazon. We cover this and much more...
I was impressed with the slider on the shaft to demonstrate desired swing plane and will attempt to remember when I regress to inside swings. Well done.
Colorado is a great state! One good idea is to look at the overall green slope as you are walking up to the green. This wide view can help set the overall feel for the green. 👊
I se you are advertising Both the MUL chipper, and the Yuma chipper. Which do you think is best for a 17 handicap who has some difficulty chipping, particularly if chipping from a steep uphill lie?
Great video Todd. I was on the corse yesterday and was showing my buddy the tip about putting the weight on the lead foot. And ball position I could tell a big difference in distance and straighter shots. Thanks for all the tips
Todd... question for all irons....on the take away, do you take it away with your hands and arms, then rotate it up to the top, or do you take it away by rotating shoulders and hips?
Liked your video on wedge play as this is my weakest point of my game along with putting. I am a 17 handicap player. A couple of problems that I am experiencing with wedge play are chunking the ball, pulling it left when I make decent contact and shanking the ball. I also do not get the distance that I feel I should be getting out of these clubs. Any suggestions????
Tom, make sure you are getting your weight to your lead foot at impact...I would like to see 80% on the lead foot at impact. This is where I would start....hope that helps.
I was always taught the ball should be right in the middle of your setup or slightly behind or back in your stance. What you're saying sounds a little contradicting to what I have always been taught. Can you elaborate on why you would want the ball slightly forward in your stance please? Thank you.
Great video. I sometimes feel that the most important fundamental of a golf swing is weight distribution. If you get it right, not much else can go wrong. Too many instruction videos talk about elbow this-way and knee that-way, all those ideas are good but they are for more advanced players; none of those things matter if the weight distribution is wrong.
I have a problem of moving the hips through first which throughs out my swing path and I shank it. It impacts my confidence with wedges. Is there a good drill to my timing better?
I noticed all of your shots had the Dave Pelz "world class" follow through---a full swing. My instructor teaches me on my wedge shots to not completely follow through, but rather stop my follow through about hip height. Your thoughts?
I find that I have to position my ball inside of my trailing foot for wedge shots. I strike them much better (and higher). If my ball is forward of my sternum, I tend to top the ball or blade it. Is that indicative of some other flaw in my technique? I have pretty good success with my wedges.
I'm pretty sure this is where pros position the ball. I've seen them hit shots with the ball almost at the trail foot. I'm honestly surprised he has it so far forward in this video. I place the ball middle or further back for 7 iron and down.
The plane slider is currently sold out. Good news is we are working on a better and easier to use device to train proper swing plane. Once complete, it will be listed here vlsgolf.com/
Mickelson says to play it mostly off the back foot. Harrington says to play it mostly off the front foot. Pell says to play it in the middle. There may be wrong approaches to these shots, but I don’t think there is a single right one.
Wouldn't it suck to just go hit a bucket of balls, get caught in the corner of a wedge instructional video, and have the internet watching your non pro swing? haha. Hats off to that guy.
1 thing you dont mention is what part of the ball are you looking at? i keep hitting the middle not the bottom and it shoots across the green and it immediately makes me start swearing.
We typically do not focus on one part of the ball but on the ball in general. Move your focus to what your body is doing and how it is moving. This will help get the focus in the right area.
Lot's of ways to play this game and Mr Nicklaus is an all time great if not the greatest of all time. We have found in our experience that our advice has helped many, many golfers. Hope you found something helpful from the content.
They’re soaking the golf course because they’re getting ready to shut the water off! When this happens I chunk ALL wedges! Shot 71 with 5 chunks! Should have been a lot lower!

With all due respect....you need to move back a set of tees if you have wedges in😂
@@HelptheBroncos 😂😂😂😂
Me too. Today, went even on the front, seven over on the back! All shots lost was chunks with wedges. Very disappointed with myself.

Solid post right here!
Great sfuff
You have no idea how helpful that was, thank you!
Snows melting and need to get back to doing drills again, Thanks Todd for the information!!!
The season is almost here!
Thank you so much i am using your drill to help with my wedge shots

I hit wedges okay on a mat. But I chunk it fat on real turf,
I was impressed with the slider on the shaft to demonstrate desired swing plane and will attempt to remember when I regress to inside swings. Well done.
Much appreciated! 👍 More to come. Are you a subscriber?
Todd I am constantly slicing with wedge, also do I line up with my feet or shoulders ,I am from nb,canada
Aim the clubface first, then feet, then shoulders. Full chapter in my latest book on this if you are interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
This video has changed my pitch game completely!! Thank you!!
Progress, thank you! Are you a subscriber?
Great tip! Thanks! What about wedge shanks??? Same problems and causes???
Here you go th-cam.com/video/GcOUunxpz-g/w-d-xo.html
Awesome! Both of those causes were me! Thanks so much!
when chipping do you raise shaft to raise heel of club to eliminate digging
Thanks for the tips. They all make sense to meThank you
You bet! If you would like to learn more, check out vlsgolf.com/
Just so well put. Been really trying to improve this all summer with mediocre results but looking forward to implementing these tips/that drill.
Thank you. Hope you are enjoying the channel
Love the channel, how do you get your lines on live view. I think it will help me immensely if I can put it on mine. Thanks
It is in the tools screen. Check out their website for details.
Good afternoon comments are coming from grand lake Colorado, reading putts is there anything you could help with

Thank you

We did a video on this, see here th-cam.com/video/39SpT2hhkRw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oV7eklLz_T0GOwuy
How can I learn how to put spin on the ball
Spin is a bi product of clean contact and clean clubs. Make sure those grooves are spot clean!
In the vertical line swing, with a slightly closed stance, do you swing down the stance or target line
Great question. You want to feel like you are swing down your stance line with the clubface square to the target line. Make sense?
Wonderful instructions! The best
Appreciate those kind words. More to come...
Awesome as always Todd

You are spot on! Weight, pressure shift is huge in the golf swing. It is a cornerstone of The Vertical Line Swing system
I pull my 9 iron pw and sw shots to the left. what can I do to correct this. thanks
Really haveing trouble closeing my 48 to 56 wedges...Everything else is good. Tips to fix, Please
I have a problem of moving the hips through first which throughs out my swing path and I shank it. It impacts my confidence with wedges. Is there a good drill to my timing better?
Great question. Here is a good drill that we have found success with for what you are working on th-cam.com/video/VUVaxRMO8rw/w-d-xo.html
Where do you look at when hitting a wedge? Forward or behind the ball?
I noticed all of your shots had the Dave Pelz "world class" follow through---a full swing. My instructor teaches me on my wedge shots to not completely follow through, but rather stop my follow through about hip height. Your thoughts?
This is a good question. I'm curious about the answer too.
What if my lack of balance prevents me swinging properly. Can the back foot be moved wider to assist balance?
Yes, this is a suggestion we give often to many of our students. Good idea....
I find that I have to position my ball inside of my trailing foot for wedge shots. I strike them much better (and higher). If my ball is forward of my sternum, I tend to top the ball or blade it. Is that indicative of some other flaw in my technique? I have pretty good success with my wedges.
Good question, how is your weight shift?
@@USGOLFTVshow Probably not as extensive as it should be due to the effects of aging! Lol. Weight shift ok but can’t turn as much as I used to.
I'm pretty sure this is where pros position the ball. I've seen them hit shots with the ball almost at the trail foot. I'm honestly surprised he has it so far forward in this video. I place the ball middle or further back for 7 iron and down.
I was almost kicked off the course the other day over a pace of play issue as I was doing so many of Todd's drills before each shot. Hehehe 😊
LOL, hey you are working on the game. Tell the group behind you to relax. 👊
Fantastic advice just what I needed
Sounds like our timing was spot on! What tip did you find most useful?
Where can I get that GOLF SWING PLANE TRAINER
The plane slider is currently sold out. Good news is we are working on a better and easier to use device to train proper swing plane. Once complete, it will be listed here vlsgolf.com/

Glad you liked it!
great tips
Great tips, thank you. I would be extremely nervous if I was the guy hitting behind you in this video.

There may be wrong approaches to these shots, but I don’t think there is a single right one.
Hi Todd, I love your videos. With my 56 degree I have a propensity to hit some shanks. Do you think my weight could be getting to far on the toes?
Yes or the club could be coming in too flat. Check out our chipping videos for some additional information.
Wouldn't it suck to just go hit a bucket of balls, get caught in the corner of a wedge instructional video, and have the internet watching your non pro swing? haha. Hats off to that guy.

We typically do not focus on one part of the ball but on the ball in general. Move your focus to what your body is doing and how it is moving. This will help get the focus in the right area.
Why am I constantly getting under my wedge shots and hitting them very short?
Check your ball position, might need to move it back a little
That guy in the background could use your help!
This is bullshit, Jack Nicklaus plays all his shots in same place off his front heel
Lot's of ways to play this game and Mr Nicklaus is an all time great if not the greatest of all time. We have found in our experience that our advice has helped many, many golfers. Hope you found something helpful from the content.
