So you're nagging at the guy for "focusing too much on damage" yet he ends up silver there and gold in every other category except healing. Seems to me his team needs to be doing their job more than this guy re adjusting his.
They should honestly nix the medal system. Most players only use it for vain, masturbatory reasons anyway. Doesn't help with shit; just gives people another reason to tap tab, and distract them for the task at hand. Better yet, just give the medals at the end of the match. Handing out medals in the middle of a game is like giving a track runner the gold at 25mm before they reach the 100. Just get rid of it.
I've also noticed not effective use of the DVa's matrix: if there's a character with a high damage like Junkrat or Roadhog in the enemy team, I suggest to use the matrix every time they shoot, experience of the game should allow to feel the pause between shots and block them, wich helps to save Rein's sheilds for a longer time.
This applies to my last game so much! The tanks doing whatever only focusing enemy tanks not tanking properly and then hiding behind their "i have gold dmg" (as roadhog lol!) line while flaming the entire team bc we are supposedly not "doing our job."

Thanks, man! I'm trying to learn how to better use matrix and to tank, this was huge help. For all the people wondering: at 2:00 I wanted to boost and ult, when I hit boost they killed my mech, when I hit ult it was too late. So yes, I should have ulted, at least I wanted to.

see, this is what the video is all about. For one, you get better value for your team if you heal them and they can fight back instead of you (healer) doing a dps job
if you were attacking with bastion no wonder you got nowhere. switch to a dive comp so everyone can split up to take out sym turrets, tele and contest point to disrupt enemies. of course if you're bad this wont work because you'll just be feeding, and if the team doesnt work with you it makes what they expect you to do near impossible to complete alone, when your 5 allies only try push through the choke... over and over...
I used to have a lot of gold damage/elim medals as dva, but now quite often silver or bronze and end up gold in elims, obj kills, and obj. time. with my damage done/blocked being almost equal numbers. The change in target focus brought me from high plat all the way to low master high diamond in my 3 stack that i usually play with. With that coming easily so far this season. damage is almost a useless stat, and im glad to see people realizing it.
I've played D.Va now for about 100 hours and I've been getting gold damage most games, and still get about 15k damage blocked per game with defence matrix. So if you use both abilities and fly in and out quickly you can still do loads of damage.
I actually learned a lot from this video! One of my favorites from you so far, FREEDO. I am a Dva main and I can see now that I have been playing wrong a lot of the time. Granted I also usually get gold elims my target selection could be a lot better. Shooting at rodehog is soooo tempting though haha
I had an argument about this with a tank in comp the other day. Because he had gold elims...and was complaining the DPS weren't doing their job...but with 200 hp I can't really get in as Sombra and get high eliminations when your tank is running ahead of the group...and the enemy tanks + DPS are trying to get the rest of our team.
Dva is one of the best mercy killer because with that unlimited ammo you can constantly reset her passive heal till your thrusters are up to get into effective range and finish her, I like using my melee to cancel my boosters to start the cooldown faster once I've gotten where I need to go, plus if you hit an enemy with both that's 80 free damage.
Hey @YourOverwatch specifically Freedo. I love these coach type videos, i seek them out on other channels, but you guys do one of the best jobs of breaking it down on youtube. The only criticism I have is maybe somewhere in the title add in a [COACH] tag.
I think as a Rein or Dva, putting in cheap damage to build up faster the ult is good. Once you have it charged however you should focusing on protect others. I mean, shooting a Rod in the face with Dva build like 50% of ult in 10 seconds. Even if you don't kill him. Rein is the same with his flame, he can throw that on enemies to build charge, but when you have it it's useless put more damage unless is to finish a target.
Here's one question. Why is there even a medal system for players? I haven't seen anything useful out of it. All we get is people who use it as a "I got gold medals so I'm not doing anything wrong".
BallsToTheWall As a dva main, using your ults when you jump out of mec is one of the worst things you can do. The reason for that is: 1. the enemy can expect it 2. you dont choose WHERE you ult and 3. you have no effect of surprise with it. The best thing to do as dva is to start ulting when behind a wall, so the enemy can't see where your ult is going. Plus, on this spot, he would've ulted in a very small area, which is completely useless since dva ult does a lot of damage even to targets that are a few meters away, here the enemy could've hid really fast and easily.
And also he was almost alone so that would've been a complete waste, even if he killed 4 people it would still be a 2v1 which equals (in most cases) to a loss
I'm pretty sure the fight was already lost by the time he got ult, plus that's a confined area so it would have got zero kills and the zoning potential is lost because, as previously said, his team-mates were dead. He really should have just left or died.
Usually when I play D.va I use her for just this. Following up on kills. I always prioritise the lowest health character and make sure they don't get away. Except for bastion. With him I shout to a teammate to come with me and I just defence matrix while they lay into him. Or I use the matrix to defend healers and lower health characters and negate ults. The only problem I have is that often a low health character is getting attacked, I pull my matrix and they become super aggressive or try to hold their ground and then my matrix runs out and they die instantly when they could have just rounded the nearest corner and taken cover. Super frustrating.
In seemingly most of my games in plat games the tanks will almost always have gold damage and elims. This is always the case with a Zarya, D.Va, or Roadhog and I can't help but to think negatively about our dps. I just feel like the two tanks shouldn't out kill both dps.
Corrupted Archangel roadhog usually deals alot of damage if he's shooting into barriers, and does alot when he gets hook kills. meaning his numbers can get high fairly quick. and zarya, if at high charge, deals alot of damage, and can deal splash damage which makes the numbers go higher. but dva shouldn't be doing alot of damage if playing properly.
OMG this entirely. The break-down around 9 minute mark perfectly summarizes what I have been thinking and trying to do with D.Va. She sucks at long distance and her shotgun is worse than reaper. Why not reinforce the back-line and protect people? Allow others to destroy while you keep them from harm with your Defence Matrix? Thank you for this.

in games without healing, consistently keeping your gun doing damage against the enemy team has incredible value. Yeah, it's still important to get kills, but doing damage is good in these games unless you are losing on opportunity cost for a higher impact play.
This is such an important video. I feel like it showcases what alot of people think D.Va "should" play as, which is wrong. People think of D.Va as this highly offensive hero where her real value is in her Defense Matrix. As a D.Va player it's immensely frustrating to see people campaign for "D.Va needs to be stronger" when they just want her to fulfill a role that she's not meant to play. I hear people always complain that she's underpowered because she can't 1v1 people, but these people don't understand that D.Va is not MEANT to 1v1 people. They complain that she's "basically a Defense Matrix bot", but she's a tank, of COURSE she's a Defense Matrix bot, lol! So thank-you Your Overwatch for pointing this out. Hopefully people wisen up to D.Va's true role a bit more. People campaign for her buffs, and while she may not be the *best* tank, if you play to her strengths she can be more than usable, and can be extremely useful on a team.
Andrew Guagliano the problem lies in the fact that d. matrix has a very short up time and, in the dmatrix bot playstyle, you have little to do in between. You become a worse Reinhardt. Still usable, but not optimal. I love D.va. I'm good at her. But lately I've been wandering to more exciting characters or more impactful characters because sitting around waiting to dmatrix something is boring and she's no longer really a flank tank like she was. If I wanted to hold rmb I'd play Reinhardt.

Sometimes it's better not to shoot at all, when you're playing tracer for example, and you've got your ult, and you're just kind of poking. You know there's no way for you to confirm any kills, and litteraly all you're doing is feeding enemy supports ult charge, without gaining any ult yourself (you've already got your ult!)
Dva might not be the best example for target prioritization just because of how her kit works with her team. Most of her damage output will be from firing into a barrier anyways just because if she's where she needs to be she'll be between her team and the enemy Rein. So, your positioning is good waiting for damage to come through the shield, do you just sit there or hold down left click to burn the shield? Obviously you need to know when to peel, when to defend, when to chase, and when to initiate with Dva, and that was the big thing I saw in this gameplay; there were more issues with what he was doing than who he was shooting, and for Dva who is very flexible for a tank you need to know when to switch to do something else. For the Mercy go chase, for the Hog pressure him away from your team with primary fire while eating his, for Junkrat just eat projectiles all day, for Winston wait for the leap then pounce on him and shove your guns in his massive face. In between these set plays with Dva you should be worried about taking the right positioning for your team, then back to spamming damage into shields or priority targets, even at long range.
this is a huge problem with moira mains, they get gold damage and elims plus a play of the game and they don't make an impact. What's worse is they wont realize they aren't helping, because the game keeps telling them they are doing the right thing.
I get what he is saying about chasing down the dva but if the dva goes untouched and gets her mech back she becomes more of an immediate threat who can pound into healers whil also blocking damage with immense mobility
Honestly I don't judge myself based on gold damage, it often just means that you are peeking well. unless you have good damage and elims, it's doesn't mean much

Gold damage by itself bad, gold elims by itself bad, but dose having both show you finishing kills giving the majority of the damage to elims. When i have both i feel as though im doing the heavy lifting so am i wrong?
Freedo I know this doesn't have too much to do with the video but I think calling Winston and D.VA solely main tank and off tank respectively is underestimating their versatility. With a dive comp they are the main tanks as they they are the ones initiating but if they have say a Orisa or D.VA they are the off-tanks but if they have a Zarya or Roadhog they become the main tanks by peeling for their backlines. Just wanted to point that out.

They should change the whole medal system. Or remove it. Damage done to targets that died. Eliminations should be split in Final Blows and Offensive Assists (which should also be things like "you did atleast 50% damage to a target that was killed by someone else, based on the Damage that was needed to kill them"). I dont even know how Blizzard came up with this bullshit, but for me it looks like they wanted to reward people who are not that good at the game, by hiding that from them.
possition, focus, matrix on/off when the dps fire/reload. don't chase a mini d.va. the longer she is out of the mek, the better. and if you wanted to carry harder learn to flank with the ult. the ult he placed was really bad. you don't need to wait ultil you have 0 hp on the mek to use the ult. yeah, it gives you a new one, but it does not matter if they burst you down in a second again. everyone also expect you to ult if they burst you down to 0, but i find it really hard to get kills with the ult that way. flanking and suprising them with a drop is far more effective. the priority is to place it in a suprising way unless you need to zone.
What got me from being a low diamond D.va player to a master D.va player was simply targeting healers and acting as a bodyguard. I would actually say that at the moment, her main role is to be a Bodyguard. The defense matrix change that was made somewhat recently really supports this. Its pretty huge that she can block the damage combo from a road hog hook. Countless times people have gotten hooked and complained in team chat, but wait wait why aren't you dead? You're welcome. D.va needs to control the battle ground and assert her dominance over flankers. Get people off high ground, bully healers that are away from their team, use your ultimate as a backup and crowd clear. A tracer on your healer? Block that shit, then when your healer has more help shoot that bitch. Your Reinhardt's barrier is broken and the entire enemy team is in front of you? Block damage then throw that bomb in!
You forgot to mention how shooting at a target being healed by mercy is just feeding her ult. Also there are a lot of points where they should've been looking to help their team instead of trying to rush in and do damage. In fact a lot of their gameplay was just feeding enemy ults and failing to secure elims. The player was legitamately more of a detriment to the team than anything.
I've never really understood why I can put up such good stats when I play D.Va and yet have a losing record with her. I'll get 10K damage, 20 elims, 12K damage blocked, gold objective kills and time and yet we lose. I'm sure I'm doing SOMETHING wrong but I don't have the faintest clue what that is.

I think this varies by playing style and I can only speak about console here, but D.VA is excellent in playing a mop up or janitor role. Players who are hurting and fleeing she can pursue and hunt down before they can recover. For example when Roadhog was hurt she could have ran him down and finished him off and then quickly returned to the center fight. Sure she could have targeted genji, but unless she could guarantee damage it could be wasted and then you have a healed roadhog coming from the back which is just another player to fight. If you're going to play chip damage with D.Va you should have a closer (usually a competent DPS player) who knows how to quickly and effectively finish them off, and vice versa. A good Zenyata player using discord can make maximize D.VA's effectiveness, as the enemy takes more damage which makes chip damage, or closing damage more lethal. Last but not least D.VA is excellent at harassing and killing healer characters. If you smell blood on a healer opponent D.VA should be exploiting that aggressively within reason. Utilizing Defense Matrix, and thrusters, a skilled D.VA player can then retreat if necessary, but even if not disrupting the opposing team's healer game can be effective, especially if you're trying to break down opposing teams try to lockdown on defense. As for Baby D.VA, she's not half a character. She becomes a decent DPS character out of mech if the player is skilled enough and can generate havoc on other dps and healers before going back into the protection of her mech. Granted if baby D.va is drawing you away from the point and the point's not being protected than she's being used as a diversion and if you must attack her you must do so quickly, or ignore her and go back to the point.
Hey Freedo, I was wondering: how do you manage effectively matrix? I had a game in which I used a lot of it to defend my teammates, then the enemy Soldier used his ult and my matrix was depleted, since I just used it to defend my DPS.
this is the flaw in overwatch, a great player can be stuck in a bad tier, and he can do everything in his power to win and still lose about half of each game simply because the team doesnt understand what to do in each situation. I personally call these effective kills vs in effective kills. Ideally a person with great game since will climb if put with others who are decent, but when put with others that dont understand their role, you have no control over the outcome even if you put your team in an amazing position to capitalize
i think that you immensely underestimate the value of spam damage - i agree that when it comes from dva - it's useless but from heroes like junkrat and pharah the ground denial is incredibly important. Being able to deny position can be as important as a pick - because with those two you can remove people from the fight only by denying space to them.
What about gold damage as Winston? This often happens to me, especially when I'm winning, and I think I'm playing him right; I dive with my teammates and put my shield up to protect them, jump on flankers harassing my healers, but I've still often got gold damage and elims over my DPS teammates. I'm a Winston main so I feel that I've got a good amount of experience here, but I quite often get gold damage, and it seems odd for a hero whose primary deals 60 damage per second (and yes, I know he can hit multiple targets and his shift deals damage, but even so). For a hero like Reinhardt who should be holding up a shield much of the time to protect teammates, yeah it makes sense that gold damage is a bad thing, but what about for a dive tank like Winston, whose shielding ability is on a cooldown?
SnArCAsTiC If the enemy all bunch up, it's 18 damage per ammo for Winston. Plus, his jump pack is a thing what damages enemies and his ult. even dealing low DPS, he can easily get gold damage, even with prime DPS heroes on your team.

There's people with 20 elim avg on soldier in masters (primarily on console) that make me want to rip my hair out. Please address stat reading in one of your videos. I main Zenyatta... and I get Gold damage and Healing despite having an Ana/Mercy as Primary support. I'm in Plat... so.... um....... Wtf xD. I mean I know Zen is a good hero but honestly , I shouldn't be able to do more damage than my DPS and heal more than Ana/Mercy.

There's nothing stopping you for just holding down lmb. You're heal just requires for you to be there, so you can spam infinitely, reload, and keep on spamming. Gold tho? That's quite strange
Dakota Joyner he only considers rein an anchor tank. he wsnts orisa to be a similar one. which can actually be effective if you have a lot of flankers and the orisa on the payload with another dps and healer. i played against this in qp lol. i couldnt even contest the payload really. similar to having a bastion and a rein on the payload
i have had a positive win ratio and i have a net loss of 1000 sr since i got the game, my only problem was a series of disconnects when my ISP sold their business, and all my losses were at the same time.. the myth that you gain more than you lose is simply not true for alot of people.
I'm tired of ALWAYS having the Gold Damage and Elimination Medal when i play Zarya. Whenever i have it i always feel like my dps teammates are useless EDIT: I played 11 games today. I won 10 games and lost only 1. Went from +-2800 to 3011 (FINALLY Diamond). I just played DPS. I understood that my real "nature" is to play dps, i'm just very good at aiming, dealing damage and doing kills.

If you want to check my Zarya on Oversumo, my battletag is DavrK#2420 I also usually play Genji, Soldier and Zenyatta, but for some reason i'm getting worse with Genji these days
DavrK then play with a Roadhog against a team with a Reinhardt. the Roadhog will probably get 4 holds because of all the damage to rein's shield. or play with a soldier like seriously, stfu, you do realize that even if the dps are doing work, they might not necessarily get gold medals because their hero's damage output is low or very focused. take a genji or tracer, for example. they will likely never have gold damage done and might get a few eliminations, but their mobility allows him to quickly kill supports. if you have a genji or tracer that's only going after the supports and effectively killing them, then yes, he might have less damage and less eliminations than you but his eliminations are arguably more important than yours because he's getting the kills that matter. the only thing you're doing is cleaning up the enemy tanks after the tracer or genji has killed the supports. another reason why your dps might not be getting medals is because your projected barriers are shit and they don't protect the dps and you're just using the barriers solely to charge yourself up rather than protect dps trying to go in. hobestly, if you lost a game and have four medals, that probably just means your dps died too quickly because you, the tank player, weren't protecting them properly. tl;dr stfu about your medals, your gold medals don't mean shit.
Could you do a video on how to play comp. with only two to three people in chat and how to coordinate with the whole team. For me it seems that is my biggest problem for when im playing comp. thanks for the videos i learned a lot.
what about the gold elim argument? what if i'm getting valuable picks in the beginning of team fights that my team refuses to capitalize on and they tell me to swap?
Memo Then they suck. I have seen a good widow who carried the soldier on my team. The soldier told her to swap but yet he fed cause apparently he is blind and did not see the giant blue rectangle I put up for my team to hide behind.
I was in a game where our hanzo said he had Gold dmg and wouldn't switch. I had gold elims and obj elims and told him Gold dmg is cool and all but if you don't get kills. He then said lol so gold dmg doesn't matter got it
Watching this Dva play is a bit painful. He's jumping constantly, but why. I mean, the enemy team could have been overwhelming him, but he seems kind of unaware of his surroundings, as well as who to prioritize.

I see in this comment section that a lot of people say gold damage on a tank means the DPS are trash. It might be true, but it is also entirely possible that the tank was not doing his job protecting them, meaning they were not in a good position to deal damage. Reinhardt can easily have gold damage if he constantly lets his shield down to firestrike or hit the enemy Reinhardt with his hammer, but maybe him doing this forced his team mates away or got them killed and that means that the DPS players could not shoot properly.

Just a correction. D.va does 25 damage with her boosters (55 if you use the booster melee combo).

if you were attacking with bastion no wonder you got nowhere. switch to a dive comp so everyone can split up to take out sym turrets, tele and contest point to disrupt enemies. of course if you're bad this wont work because you'll just be feeding, and if the team doesnt work with you it makes what they expect you to do near impossible to complete alone, when your 5 allies only try push through the choke... over and over...

another thing to consider is that gold damage without elims to back it up just makes it so the healer ults on the the other team charge more.
I used to have a lot of gold damage/elim medals as dva, but now quite often silver or bronze and end up gold in elims, obj kills, and obj. time. with my damage done/blocked being almost equal numbers. The change in target focus brought me from high plat all the way to low master high diamond in my 3 stack that i usually play with. With that coming easily so far this season. damage is almost a useless stat, and im glad to see people realizing it.

I've played D.Va now for about 100 hours and I've been getting gold damage most games, and still get about 15k damage blocked per game with defence matrix. So if you use both abilities and fly in and out quickly you can still do loads of damage.

I had an argument about this with a tank in comp the other day. Because he had gold elims...and was complaining the DPS weren't doing their job...but with 200 hp I can't really get in as Sombra and get high eliminations when your tank is running ahead of the group...and the enemy tanks + DPS are trying to get the rest of our team.
Dva is one of the best mercy killer because with that unlimited ammo you can constantly reset her passive heal till your thrusters are up to get into effective range and finish her, I like using my melee to cancel my boosters to start the cooldown faster once I've gotten where I need to go, plus if you hit an enemy with both that's 80 free damage.
Hey @YourOverwatch specifically Freedo. I love these coach type videos, i seek them out on other channels, but you guys do one of the best jobs of breaking it down on youtube. The only criticism I have is maybe somewhere in the title add in a [COACH] tag.
I think as a Rein or Dva, putting in cheap damage to build up faster the ult is good. Once you have it charged however you should focusing on protect others. I mean, shooting a Rod in the face with Dva build like 50% of ult in 10 seconds. Even if you don't kill him. Rein is the same with his flame, he can throw that on enemies to build charge, but when you have it it's useless put more damage unless is to finish a target.
Here's one question. Why is there even a medal system for players? I haven't seen anything useful out of it. All we get is people who use it as a "I got gold medals so I'm not doing anything wrong".

BallsToTheWall As a dva main, using your ults when you jump out of mec is one of the worst things you can do. The reason for that is: 1. the enemy can expect it 2. you dont choose WHERE you ult and 3. you have no effect of surprise with it.
The best thing to do as dva is to start ulting when behind a wall, so the enemy can't see where your ult is going.
Plus, on this spot, he would've ulted in a very small area, which is completely useless since dva ult does a lot of damage even to targets that are a few meters away, here the enemy could've hid really fast and easily.
And also he was almost alone so that would've been a complete waste, even if he killed 4 people it would still be a 2v1 which equals (in most cases) to a loss
I'm pretty sure the fight was already lost by the time he got ult, plus that's a confined area so it would have got zero kills and the zoning potential is lost because, as previously said, his team-mates were dead. He really should have just left or died.

Usually when I play D.va I use her for just this. Following up on kills. I always prioritise the lowest health character and make sure they don't get away. Except for bastion. With him I shout to a teammate to come with me and I just defence matrix while they lay into him. Or I use the matrix to defend healers and lower health characters and negate ults. The only problem I have is that often a low health character is getting attacked, I pull my matrix and they become super aggressive or try to hold their ground and then my matrix runs out and they die instantly when they could have just rounded the nearest corner and taken cover. Super frustrating.
In seemingly most of my games in plat games the tanks will almost always have gold damage and elims. This is always the case with a Zarya, D.Va, or Roadhog and I can't help but to think negatively about our dps. I just feel like the two tanks shouldn't out kill both dps.
Corrupted Archangel roadhog usually deals alot of damage if he's shooting into barriers, and does alot when he gets hook kills. meaning his numbers can get high fairly quick. and zarya, if at high charge, deals alot of damage, and can deal splash damage which makes the numbers go higher. but dva shouldn't be doing alot of damage if playing properly.
OMG this entirely. The break-down around 9 minute mark perfectly summarizes what I have been thinking and trying to do with D.Va. She sucks at long distance and her shotgun is worse than reaper. Why not reinforce the back-line and protect people? Allow others to destroy while you keep them from harm with your Defence Matrix?

in games without healing, consistently keeping your gun doing damage against the enemy team has incredible value. Yeah, it's still important to get kills, but doing damage is good in these games unless you are losing on opportunity cost for a higher impact play.

I really feel like d.va's main use is matrixing ults. Which no one seems to know how to do and no one seems to appreciate it when people can do it.
This is such an important video. I feel like it showcases what alot of people think D.Va "should" play as, which is wrong. People think of D.Va as this highly offensive hero where her real value is in her Defense Matrix. As a D.Va player it's immensely frustrating to see people campaign for "D.Va needs to be stronger" when they just want her to fulfill a role that she's not meant to play. I hear people always complain that she's underpowered because she can't 1v1 people, but these people don't understand that D.Va is not MEANT to 1v1 people. They complain that she's "basically a Defense Matrix bot", but she's a tank, of COURSE she's a Defense Matrix bot, lol!
So thank-you Your Overwatch for pointing this out. Hopefully people wisen up to D.Va's true role a bit more. People campaign for her buffs, and while she may not be the *best* tank, if you play to her strengths she can be more than usable, and can be extremely useful on a team.

Andrew Guagliano the problem lies in the fact that d. matrix has a very short up time and, in the dmatrix bot playstyle, you have little to do in between. You become a worse Reinhardt. Still usable, but not optimal. I love D.va. I'm good at her. But lately I've been wandering to more exciting characters or more impactful characters because sitting around waiting to dmatrix something is boring and she's no longer really a flank tank like she was. If I wanted to hold rmb I'd play Reinhardt.

had that happen to me a few times. gold damage + no elimination medal = #1 signal for maximum trash damage.
Sometimes it's better not to shoot at all, when you're playing tracer for example, and you've got your ult, and you're just kind of poking. You know there's no way for you to confirm any kills, and litteraly all you're doing is feeding enemy supports ult charge, without gaining any ult yourself (you've already got your ult!)
I like these breakdown videos, I think they help in specific scenarios and really get into the details. Real inside baseball.
Dva might not be the best example for target prioritization just because of how her kit works with her team.
Most of her damage output will be from firing into a barrier anyways just because if she's where she needs to be she'll be between her team and the enemy Rein. So, your positioning is good waiting for damage to come through the shield, do you just sit there or hold down left click to burn the shield?
Obviously you need to know when to peel, when to defend, when to chase, and when to initiate with Dva, and that was the big thing I saw in this gameplay; there were more issues with what he was doing than who he was shooting, and for Dva who is very flexible for a tank you need to know when to switch to do something else.
For the Mercy go chase, for the Hog pressure him away from your team with primary fire while eating his, for Junkrat just eat projectiles all day, for Winston wait for the leap then pounce on him and shove your guns in his massive face. In between these set plays with Dva you should be worried about taking the right positioning for your team, then back to spamming damage into shields or priority targets, even at long range.
If you have D.Va and you don't constantly empty your deflect Matrix on blocking the enemy Junkrat, you're wasting an hero slot.
this is a huge problem with moira mains, they get gold damage and elims plus a play of the game and they don't make an impact. What's worse is they wont realize they aren't helping, because the game keeps telling them they are doing the right thing.

I get what he is saying about chasing down the dva but if the dva goes untouched and gets her mech back she becomes more of an immediate threat who can pound into healers whil also blocking damage with immense mobility
I usually messure how good i do with Final Blows (if its a hero that shows that stat), it usually more telling.
Honestly I don't judge myself based on gold damage, it often just means that you are peeking well. unless you have good damage and elims, it's doesn't mean much

Gold damage by itself bad, gold elims by itself bad, but dose having both show you finishing kills giving the majority of the damage to elims. When i have both i feel as though im doing the heavy lifting so am i wrong?
Freedo I know this doesn't have too much to do with the video but I think calling Winston and D.VA solely main tank and off tank respectively is underestimating their versatility. With a dive comp they are the main tanks as they they are the ones initiating but if they have say a Orisa or D.VA they are the off-tanks but if they have a Zarya or Roadhog they become the main tanks by peeling for their backlines. Just wanted to point that out.
Im a diamond player who mains tanks and we do often get gold damage but usually were still doing our jobs

They should change the whole medal system. Or remove it. Damage done to targets that died. Eliminations should be split in Final Blows and Offensive Assists (which should also be things like "you did atleast 50% damage to a target that was killed by someone else, based on the Damage that was needed to kill them").
I dont even know how Blizzard came up with this bullshit, but for me it looks like they wanted to reward people who are not that good at the game, by hiding that from them.
possition, focus, matrix on/off when the dps fire/reload. don't chase a mini d.va. the longer she is out of the mek, the better. and if you wanted to carry harder learn to flank with the ult. the ult he placed was really bad. you don't need to wait ultil you have 0 hp on the mek to use the ult. yeah, it gives you a new one, but it does not matter if they burst you down in a second again. everyone also expect you to ult if they burst you down to 0, but i find it really hard to get kills with the ult that way. flanking and suprising them with a drop is far more effective. the priority is to place it in a suprising way unless you need to zone.
What got me from being a low diamond D.va player to a master D.va player was simply targeting healers and acting as a bodyguard. I would actually say that at the moment, her main role is to be a Bodyguard. The defense matrix change that was made somewhat recently really supports this. Its pretty huge that she can block the damage combo from a road hog hook. Countless times people have gotten hooked and complained in team chat, but wait wait why aren't you dead? You're welcome.
D.va needs to control the battle ground and assert her dominance over flankers. Get people off high ground, bully healers that are away from their team, use your ultimate as a backup and crowd clear. A tracer on your healer? Block that shit, then when your healer has more help shoot that bitch. Your Reinhardt's barrier is broken and the entire enemy team is in front of you? Block damage then throw that bomb in!
You forgot to mention how shooting at a target being healed by mercy is just feeding her ult. Also there are a lot of points where they should've been looking to help their team instead of trying to rush in and do damage. In fact a lot of their gameplay was just feeding enemy ults and failing to secure elims. The player was legitamately more of a detriment to the team than anything.
I've never really understood why I can put up such good stats when I play D.Va and yet have a losing record with her. I'll get 10K damage, 20 elims, 12K damage blocked, gold objective kills and time and yet we lose. I'm sure I'm doing SOMETHING wrong but I don't have the faintest clue what that is.

I think this varies by playing style and I can only speak about console here, but D.VA is excellent in playing a mop up or janitor role. Players who are hurting and fleeing she can pursue and hunt down before they can recover. For example when Roadhog was hurt she could have ran him down and finished him off and then quickly returned to the center fight. Sure she could have targeted genji, but unless she could guarantee damage it could be wasted and then you have a healed roadhog coming from the back which is just another player to fight.
If you're going to play chip damage with D.Va you should have a closer (usually a competent DPS player) who knows how to quickly and effectively finish them off, and vice versa. A good Zenyata player using discord can make maximize D.VA's effectiveness, as the enemy takes more damage which makes chip damage, or closing damage more lethal.
Last but not least D.VA is excellent at harassing and killing healer characters. If you smell blood on a healer opponent D.VA should be exploiting that aggressively within reason. Utilizing Defense Matrix, and thrusters, a skilled D.VA player can then retreat if necessary, but even if not disrupting the opposing team's healer game can be effective, especially if you're trying to break down opposing teams try to lockdown on defense.
As for Baby D.VA, she's not half a character. She becomes a decent DPS character out of mech if the player is skilled enough and can generate havoc on other dps and healers before going back into the protection of her mech. Granted if baby D.va is drawing you away from the point and the point's not being protected than she's being used as a diversion and if you must attack her you must do so quickly, or ignore her and go back to the point.
Hey Freedo, I was wondering: how do you manage effectively matrix? I had a game in which I used a lot of it to defend my teammates, then the enemy Soldier used his ult and my matrix was depleted, since I just used it to defend my DPS.

this is the flaw in overwatch, a great player can be stuck in a bad tier, and he can do everything in his power to win and still lose about half of each game simply because the team doesnt understand what to do in each situation. I personally call these effective kills vs in effective kills. Ideally a person with great game since will climb if put with others who are decent, but when put with others that dont understand their role, you have no control over the outcome even if you put your team in an amazing position to capitalize

i think that you immensely underestimate the value of spam damage - i agree that when it comes from dva - it's useless but from heroes like junkrat and pharah the ground denial is incredibly important. Being able to deny position can be as important as a pick - because with those two you can remove people from the fight only by denying space to them.
What about gold damage as Winston? This often happens to me, especially when I'm winning, and I think I'm playing him right; I dive with my teammates and put my shield up to protect them, jump on flankers harassing my healers, but I've still often got gold damage and elims over my DPS teammates. I'm a Winston main so I feel that I've got a good amount of experience here, but I quite often get gold damage, and it seems odd for a hero whose primary deals 60 damage per second (and yes, I know he can hit multiple targets and his shift deals damage, but even so). For a hero like Reinhardt who should be holding up a shield much of the time to protect teammates, yeah it makes sense that gold damage is a bad thing, but what about for a dive tank like Winston, whose shielding ability is on a cooldown?
SnArCAsTiC If the enemy all bunch up, it's 18 damage per ammo for Winston. Plus, his jump pack is a thing what damages enemies and his ult. even dealing low DPS, he can easily get gold damage, even with prime DPS heroes on your team.

I main Zenyatta... and I get Gold damage and Healing despite having an Ana/Mercy as Primary support. I'm in Plat... so.... um....... Wtf xD. I mean I know Zen is a good hero but honestly , I shouldn't be able to do more damage than my DPS and heal more than Ana/Mercy.

I've gotten 12,000 damage done with Bronze damage done when I've gotten gold damage done from 2,000 damage done.
i have had a positive win ratio and i have a net loss of 1000 sr since i got the game, my only problem was a series of disconnects when my ISP sold their business, and all my losses were at the same time.. the myth that you gain more than you lose is simply not true for alot of people.
I'm tired of ALWAYS having the Gold Damage and Elimination Medal when i play Zarya. Whenever i have it i always feel like my dps teammates are useless
EDIT: I played 11 games today. I won 10 games and lost only 1. Went from +-2800 to 3011 (FINALLY Diamond). I just played DPS. I understood that my real "nature" is to play dps, i'm just very good at aiming, dealing damage and doing kills.

like seriously, stfu, you do realize that even if the dps are doing work, they might not necessarily get gold medals because their hero's damage output is low or very focused.
take a genji or tracer, for example. they will likely never have gold damage done and might get a few eliminations, but their mobility allows him to quickly kill supports. if you have a genji or tracer that's only going after the supports and effectively killing them, then yes, he might have less damage and less eliminations than you but his eliminations are arguably more important than yours because he's getting the kills that matter. the only thing you're doing is cleaning up the enemy tanks after the tracer or genji has killed the supports.
another reason why your dps might not be getting medals is because your projected barriers are shit and they don't protect the dps and you're just using the barriers solely to charge yourself up rather than protect dps trying to go in. hobestly, if you lost a game and have four medals, that probably just means your dps died too quickly because you, the tank player, weren't protecting them properly.
tl;dr stfu about your medals, your gold medals don't mean shit.

I see in this comment section that a lot of people say gold damage on a tank means the DPS are trash. It might be true, but it is also entirely possible that the tank was not doing his job protecting them, meaning they were not in a good position to deal damage. Reinhardt can easily have gold damage if he constantly lets his shield down to firestrike or hit the enemy Reinhardt with his hammer, but maybe him doing this forced his team mates away or got them killed and that means that the DPS players could not shoot properly.
