    As a tank main, I can safely say that the big blue barrier that blocks damage seems to be a phobia for toxic dps'. Seriously they avoid it like the plague. Also when I initiate as a winston or rein, I expect you to move with me, not sit back and complain that I'm not shielding you

      Except often the team is not moving in with you because your team hasn't secured the current position yet. If you go in, and the position is not secure, there is no right move. If they come with you, the pharah or tracer or soldier up top or whatever will close in behind you picking off healers and DPS and pinching you from both sides. If they stay back and fight the flanker, their tank will have essentially committed suicide. Awareness of map control is extremely important for a tank.
      That said, there are of course players who just sit back spamming long range damage at distant targets for no particular reason. These players should definitely wake up and get into the fight with their tank.

      @Eastra3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ziivec.....you are partly right. IT is your job to initiate, but never initiate until your whole team says they are ready (why I only play in 6 stacks). When you aren't making an initiation, you job is to protect your medics. If you initiate, and your medics don't have the mobility to keep up, and a Genji or Tracer jumps on them because you left, then you end up dying, because they aren't healing you, because they are running for their lives or dead......now you know how it works. This is often a communication problem, hence why I lack 6 stacks.

  • @ruebari799

    A Rein whose shield is almost going down, charges in, doesn't hit the pin, and dies within 3 seconds. The team loses the fight, but the tank doesn't change his strategy. That's the kind I blame.
    But none of this is worth being toxic for. I love everyone who picks a tank.

      I typically charge on the first choke initially. But I let my teammates know when I'm about to do it, so they can set up or get out the way, if I hit the pin I let them know and then they can go in. But if it doesn't work the first time, I typically ask they get a pick on say Bastion, or Ana/Mercy, or anyone else that has high DPS that can shred me before I hit the pin.

    • @Nickle_King
      @Nickle_King 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You see, the problem with that is it's an All In strategy. If it doesn't work, it's a great way to get moderately experienced or no headset teams wiped. And it usually doesn't work.

      Hammurabi the awesome "when to blame the dps" when I as the tank (happens more often then you think) or as the support (happened once as zenyatta) end the match with 4/5 or ALL GOLD. And I mean high gold (50+elims). While medals might be deceiving, when I as the tank am walking out with all of them, someone is not doing their job

    • @dbzlucky7462
      @dbzlucky7462 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      KRMalana.2 depends on the comp. I sometimes as a DPS player find myself getting gold elims but no medal or bronze in damage. Does that mean I'm not doing enough damage? Am I perhaps finishing off key targets before they get healed? Is the guy with gold damage doing trash damage and feeding enemy support ult? Maybe rein is swinging his hammer all day and rarely using the shield. Medals don't tell the whole story

      Aeris Generally you also Check if the person you’re boosting has ult. I’m a Genji main, but I play Ana a lot. This is a good habit to have because nanoboosting a Genji who’s on 60 hp and is no where near ult is a bad plan.

  • @whoacctuallycares
    @whoacctuallycares 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One thing that i have learnt from playing rein is that you should never let your shield hit 0, if you have to stop blocking at 30 then whats the difference? Just tell the team and listen for the other Rein's ult since it is easy to block if you're not directly in his face. Blocking a rein ult multiple times is so satisfying and then you see the role of rein switch to a dps main on their team and then you've won.

    • @adamtuohy2567
      @adamtuohy2567 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yup, even 30 hp on the barrier can block an earthshatter, also it recharges faster if it didn't hit 0. be aggressive, smack the enemy rein around, show him your dominance, then and only then have you attained true glory

    Thank you Your Overwatch for bringing this video to the community. I feel that so many players in our community just play a certain type of character (Genji mains/Junkrat rats/etcetera) that a lot of what you talk about brings to light what its like being a tank - I appreciate that. Also, I really liked the concept about thinking of the shield as an offensive ability. The offense that occurs isn't from you as an individual but as a team/collective, therefore, being an offensive ability. I never really comment on TH-cam videos but you guys are doing an amazing job and I really feel that you all help shape the positive aspects of our community throughout the ranks and game modes.
    Kindly,
    Sandaime

  • @annthuhneevee8237

    Another problem here is he is letting the shield hit 0. If you let it hit 0, it takes longer to allow him to shield, its way better to stop shielding at like 200hp so that way it doesn't announce the break and its usable faster.

      @FaeChangeling 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm a Mercy and Ana main (also Sombra, but that's not important rn) and I only blame the tanks when they decide to charge straight to their death and expect me to follow them, or just decide to sponge fire from the entire enemy team and think they're immortal or something.
      If you're charging out of position, into the entire enemy team and expecting me to follow you, or you drop your shield to do a fire strike with the entire team behind your shield and giving no warning, or you just try to sponge endlessly, you're to blame.
      If you blame me for not keeping you alive when you do any of those, you're just a dick. If I fail to keep you alive when you're playing properly, then it's on me. But what I always say is that you should play as if you didn't have a healer, even though you do: you play much more carefully and actually play to stay alive, as opposed to being reckless and expecting me to somehow keep you alive.

    So many of these points only apply to like high-Platinum tiers and up. Below that, teams are generally not co-ordinated enough or have enough game sense to know to rush the choke when they hear Rein call out that his shield is destroyed. Pushes at lower tiers just don't happen that way.

  • @darkpyroblade
    @darkpyroblade 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    this reminds me of the video about disregarding the choke points. that video helped me so much. when your tank and team is committed then blast through the choke and take the point. it helps so much when the tank is informed and has the team behind him.

  • @hypershadow5g
    @hypershadow5g 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You need a video called "When to blame to healer" with the first point being "the healer doesnt heal the tank". So many people seem to think that thanks are just damage sponges, they dont need healing like everyone else, and so they focus on everyone else while the tank is taking most of the damage. Then low and behold, the tank is dead, and everyone is blaming the tank

  • @shavedata5436
    @shavedata5436 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think another important tip is to tank with your face as well in situations where you don't need the engage. if you position yourself in a way that you attract a decent amount of fire, but are safe from deadly abilities (ie hooks) you can save your shield and provide ult charge for your healers. of course this only works if the supports can be relied on to do their job and heal you up afterward

  • @necromancer0616
    @necromancer0616 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    He had a Mei wall to back him up so I don't think it was a bad shield. One thing I know is that RH can do is move faster while his shield is up is jump instead of run then you move faster too. Team coordination is the best tip however. It's the difference between good and bad teams. Good Stuff Freedo!

  • @DrinkGameRepeat
    @DrinkGameRepeat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The support helping the Rein with the rest of the team's positioning is exactly what I do with my team. I'm usually in the back - Ana, Lucio, Torbjorn mostly, so I get a good look of the "battlefield" - so I always let everyone know their and the enemy's positioning when I can. It helps a lot, so I highly recommend working on that if you're support or other backline heroes.

  • @bamenvy
    @bamenvy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a Reinhardt main in high gold and low play range I find myself calling out to engage, team is assembled, and we have a good attack angle, but the team does not follow up on the advance. The shield fails, and when I fall back to recharge, the team is THEN moving forward past me, with no shield. I really appreciate that you said to give your tanks the confidence to engage, because I now find myself wondering whether the team is pushing with me, and that kind of mental distraction is awful.

    I always love the Rein that charges past the other team without pinning anything (usually also with zero shield charge) and then blames the healers for not following him (impossible and pocketing him. He also blames the team for not taking advantage of his clever diversion, forgetting that the term can't run past the Bastion that he left behind for us. He just does it over and over. Feeds his shield to the Bastion and then charges all the way to the back line with no pin. Then flames the team.

    Reinhardt is two characters rolled into one. The first is the reserved, conservative, guardian Reinhardt who protects his team while they do damage. On the other side of the coin, as soon as the fight breaks down and tons of enemies are all over the place, he becomes a damage dealing, unstoppable force with a hammer hit box the size of a bus. Knowing when and how to play both of those sides of Reinhardt is the key to being a powerful tank

  • @XxTriKzR4KiDzxX

    When playing rein, I recommend talking out what is going on. update your team when your shield is at half/a quarter, and warn them in advance during a fight that it is about to break. let them know the shield is going down for a fire strike, or that you are gonna charge in. Team chat exists for a reason, be sure to use it and you will find a lot more success on rein and other heroes

    I swear I don't know why, but at the SR point I'm currently at nobody wants to choose Rein. I know you don't need a Rein for everything, but still. You would think most of the time he's necessary for eichenwalde right? Apparently not. Then they wonder why we're getting picked off. As soon as I switch to Rein it's smooth sailing. I'm not saying ima pro Rein, but Im definitely causing a noticeable difference in these team fights.

      Lol that's funny cause I actually play more D.va and I always flank on Eichanwalde, but certain games when I chose D.va nobody choses Rein or I guess the best comp to counter. I can touch the point all I want, but my team doesn't always come through. At least with a Rein I can touch the point as D.Va you know causing people to back up then our rein charges in with the team right behind. It works damn near all the time.

  • @Bodyknock
    @Bodyknock 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    To me a useful way to think of the shield is kind of like a healing ability. You want to use it when your nearby allies are likely to be taking damage or to protect allies who are low on health so they don't die. Using it when none of your team or the enemy team is nearby is just preventing your shield from being able to recharge without actually preventing your team from taking damage. Similarly you should be looking for opportunities to actively move into a position in front of an ally to block damage for them rather than hope they know to stand behind it. When a soldier is in front of you drop your shield and walk in front of them then raise the shield so you can get into position in front of them more quickly rather keep the shield up and try to slowly plod around not actually shielding them at all and losing shield strength in the process.
    In short if you aren't blocking damage that would have hit an ally then you are not only wasting your shield strength but you are slowing down your own movement speed and keeping yourself from getting into a better position to protect your team. Using it only to protect yourself is usually pointless since that prevents you from using your offensive abilities and slows you down making you easier to flank, better to keep the shield off except when you are in a position that an ally can take advantage of it.

    I call it 'shield rationing'. To be able to conserve it in lulls and activate it for engagements/offensives. And to be sure to save at least 1000 shield hp for a teamfight. And to tell your team "Shield down" at least 1-2s before you drop it.

    Might I suggest the pop-ups with information that appear every so often in the bottom left hand of the screen. Try putting it in the top right or the top left. Overlaying it over the health and barrier information provides a clutter that doesn't make the pop-up immediately noticeable, and by the time someone does notice it, it'll take them a second to filter it from the game information. In the top corners, there is no In-game information, so the pop-ups are more noticeable and easier to read. :)

    Trash blocking is the biggest hurdle I had to get over to learn Rein, after a bit of studying and quite a few hours of practice, I'm finally the Reinhardt that wins not only the shield wars, but the Rein mind games more often than not... though it's mostly because there isn't a whole lot of real Rein players, and experience is the biggest factor in a Rein vs Rein

    as a Reinhardt main with 100+ hours on rein, I see this way too much and its just wrong.
    1- when you use Reinhardt's ultimate, dont fucking charge just hit everyone instead, charging pushes everyone infront of you away to safety cuz they are far from your team. if you dont charge all of them will be laying infront of you waiting to get hit by the hammer. just hit them and have mercy boosting ur attack and all of them will be dead or almost dead.
    2- dont be that Reinhardt who holds up the shield on defense and keep going backwards. ALWAYS hold ur place on choke points and only go backwards when necessary and if you are on attack, PUSH on choke points. dont wait for enemy to make mistakes, ( if you push with confidence, they will get scared and can be easily broken.
    3- if zarya uses her ult, dont charge on them, fire strike and hits with the hammer only.
    4- dont think you are the dps on the team. sure you do need to attack and get some kills but dont be that guy who swings the hammer and never puts the shield.
    5- dont charge at the enemy recklessly because your teammates are depending on your shield to stay alive. I hope this helps some of the people who plays Reinhardt

    Speaking of initiating. How about when you use an initiating ult like Sombra's for example, and even though your whole team is there, they decide to keep hiding and doing poke damage until the ult has lost its effect, then they all decide to charge in and die afterwards, even though you communicated to them that you were going to ult, and checked if anyone else has an ult to follow up with. That just sucks.

  • @PerciusLive
    @PerciusLive 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    this is why i play winston. i can get in, out, above, and around. plus his bubble is effective as hell when the enemy cant focus fire a single target because too many individuals are getting picked off.
    but for some reason, people just love to spam rein shields in every ranking below top 500 and GM. no way around it because apparently whoever wins this minigame of 'who's rein shield goes first' is justifiable for their "gold damage" while a pharah, tracer or any other dive hero gets the impact elims with bronze damage.

  • @bluebladesaber3560
    @bluebladesaber3560 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also if you earthshatter don't use your charge as a rein it only pushes the majority of the enemies away yes it will give you a frag but the others will fly away while instead if you use your hammer to deal damage they get pulled in closer and you can damage almost all of them without sending them flying so your team can also shoot on them (sorry if my english suck's not my native language and it's too early to be thinking about perfect spelling)

    this season 4 Ive been playing a lot of rein since not much like to do it. And i pick up few things from just playing. I sometimes like to bait out enemy abilities such as roadhogs hook and rein ults, I basically put down my shield and in a split sec i bring it back up it does work. A tip for players starting to rein you can cancel his left click to bring up the shield Also its ok if you take a lil bit of damage when u take down ur shield its a way to help ur supports to get some ult charge.
    I always tell my team that the shield is going down so they can prepare and brace themselves. Also I normally take the shield down when its around 300-500 hp since if u let the shield be destroyed completely it will take a long time to be able to use it again.

    As a master mccree player, I'd say I stay behind the shield only when I choose to deadeye because there are better positions for me to hold down with support obviously and make it possible for rein or any other tank to push up(I mainly initiate team fights with kills On tracer, genji, pharah, or any supports). Otherwise I'll stay behind the shield if I know I'm getting shot from everything haha. When I get "blamed for not doing well(even when I have gold elims or getting key frags), I just tell them they're dysfunctional if their gonna blame me like that.

    It's hard to play Rein when you everyone on your team (usually except the healers) doesn't use your shield. I definitely hold up my shield too long at times but it's mostly due to the dps that always want to peak when they have a roadhog or something. another issue is trying to save your teammate when you should just let them die for overextending.

    What you say on 6:10 is a thing as a tank main ( Reinhardt/Winston ) I really struggle sometimes with, if got shield managment under control normally.. Thing is people even on daimond/master sometimes completely forget that you have a shield and run in front of it and get pulled or stunned and die.. Shield managment is somthing the whole group can help with, if i have my shield down.. Get cover a bit until i feel comfertable holding it up agian if a big chunk of damage is incoming or the other team charges in and i block them..

    For me I just take Rein's phrase "don't worry my friends I AM YOU SHIELD" really seriously. I use his body first and have a mercy behind me to trash all the enemy damage when I feel its safe to do so. Then when my teammates need to engage I put it up. Also I use his fire charge very often when my shield is down so the enemy does not predict it as easily. Also I do not tackle into the team unless if I know that: 1. If its worth it 2. If it guarentees the kill 3. If I know I will not die in the process as it will make my team suffer. Of course this is just based off the several hours I put into Reinhardt and I'm sure others have their own effective ways to handle Rein.

    PSA: When your Rein is working well with your team comp... HE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT HERO ON YOUR TEAM!! Mercy and Ana you must absolutely do your best to keep them alive. A Mercy healing a Rein can be more deadly than most any DPS. And tanks in general are the foundation of team comps. Lose the tank, lose the foundation.

  • @CloakofAuron
    @CloakofAuron 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Roadhog isn't a tank, though. He doesn't function as a tank would, that being coordinating with the party, blocking incoming damage, and making it safe for the team to engage and potentially win a fight. Hog is a bullet sponge with high attack power and a self-heal; it's known among anyone who's played the game enough that he's best used offensively to exploit and punish any enemy player who's out of position or thinks they're going to do their own thing. He's one of the few heroes that is actually soloable for a set amount of time, like Genji or Tracer, and can be effective in doing so. In that regard, he plays a lot more like an offensive hero than a tank, doesn't matter that he has 600 HP.
    Many thanks on the video. I've already been doing a bit of what you mentioned you should do with Rein, that being utilizing positions and cover to recharge the shield, and I've noticed that I'm more aware of when to bring up the shield to engage. Knowing when to advance and when to back off as a tank is important. Something I've also found that has actually helped me win matches as Rein is that it's okay to take a bit of damage in exchange for shield recharge. Your shield isn't there to solely help you avoid taking damage as you move forward and be a badass sentinel, it's there for your whole team to have cover and fire through so they can initiate a team fight and start getting picks. If you're just standing there with your shield up to block every bit of damage, you're being a sub-par Rein. You need to block the damage that matters, and the damage that matters the most is the kind that will harm both you and your team enough to get at least two or three kills, or the kind that's focused on a key DPS or support that's keeping everyone alive or helping in the push.

    As complicated and team oriented as Overwatch is, I would like to see them marking the class we're good with. Too many games have people ask for a Rein when EVERYONE ISN"T GOOD WITH REIN! Just a little marker with the two - classes or chars I'm best with would go a long way in making better team comps. Too many games have been lost by people playing roles they're still learning.

    + the most tilting ting that can happen to a Rein player is a soldier (or whatever dps or healer) that runs through your shield, and instantly get deleted even worse when they blame you because they run faster then rein
