Assassins shouldn't be happy...

  • Just a ramble video where I express my opinion on the attitude and psyche Assassins should have. I don't think that people who have sworn themselves to a hidden society that kills people should be very cheery about it all.

    I think Jesper Kyd really understood this aspect of Ezio's character well. Tracks like Sanctuary or Home in Florence really have this underlying sadness in them, I like to think it adds to Ezio's ability to blend into crowds. He's dead and empty inside and the lifelessness helps him just roam about unnoticed by a city brimming with life.

    Ezio had three full games and two short films that covered his entire life not to mention a few name drops and appearances here and there. He’s basically the Spider-Man of Assassins Creed.

    What made me love Ezio was the simple fact that ubisoft had really elevated their storytelling and had written a memorable character. The well written cut scenes, character development, and overall story presentation made me feel like I was playing more than just a game, I was experiencing something truly special. AC2 has stuck with me ever since I played it back in 2009.

      @@apprentice-of-shadowsyour analysis of 'Arno' & whoever else you mentioned is a very superficial way of utilising critical thinking based on over-analyzation; i dont know if you remember anything about Unity considering the fact that Arno draws specific vignettes of someone like Ezio & how their existence were shaped into being chosen for what they were set out to do.
      you have a very superficial perspective of Arno considering that EVERYTHING in the game is about how Arno deals with circumstances throughout his life, which happens since the demise of his Father to which that Arno witnessed, thus that follows along with Elise & his step-father and being indoctrinated into the Assassin Brotherhood.

I’m now about to replay ac2 for the jillionth time so I can experience it from the perspective of having played the first game. The nostalgia is about to hit.

    They definitely tried to evoke a sense in Arno that he never really moved on with his father's death until he came to terms with Elise's death in Dead Kings in the way he always pulls out his pocket watch and also tries to retrieve his pocket watch that always keeps getting stolen, but it was definitely a story element they fell short on.

  • @redshirt4life181

    I've never understood the insistence that Ezio is a joke-cracking wise-guy.
    Nor Arno, honestly. Once the opening sequences are done, Arno basically becomes a silent protagonists (literally during side quests). All except when the girl he loves is around: his last chance, in his eyes, of happiness. In that sense, I think he's in denial about his father and his adoptive father's deaths. He thinks as long as he still has Elise, he can pretend he's happy. And yeah, once that ends, his denial finally breaks, after so many years, and he has to admit to himself that he's a broken man.
    Nor was Edward jokey. People say he's all charisma and smiles. But by the end he's so broken down because he comes to realize how hollow and empty and meaningless his pursuit of riches has been his whole life. He wasn't happy. He was putting off happiness until he got his fortune, only to find that no matter how big his fortune got it was never enough for him to say, "Okay, now I can be happy."
    Jacob --- erm --- is a completely static character. A caricature of what people though Ezio was. He's bad writing incarnate.
    Bayek is the tragic man at its deepest level. So much, that no one is confused about whether he's happy or not. But he has that beautiful emotional range: can go from murderous to playful to depressed to romantic.
    And that's why for me Connor doesn't work. It's not because Connor is moody or not quippy. That is such a surface level reading of him. For me it's his lack of emotional range. He is as emotionless before his mother's death as after. I don't know if it was the voice actor or the writing, but he is as emotionless with the Sons of Liberty as with the Templars as with the Homestead residents as with his own Father. He is just a monotone blank slate, through and though. Only person who seems to get anything out of him is Charles Lee, which is why "Where is Charles Lee!?" is so meme-able. It's the only subject that excites the guy! And he doesn't learn and grow. Even if you include that deleted bit of dialogue, one speech does not a character arc make.
    But yes. This is a franchise about men & women who learn to kill people for a living. That's dark stuff. The tone of the game and its protagonist should reflect that darkness.

    • @channel45853
      @channel45853 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      A character being static doesn't make them badly written, if he is static. You didn't really prove that beyond saying it and hoping that people would agree with you without questioning.
      And the franchise shouldn't be set to one tone nor should it be forced into being dark or the protags just dark and jaded just cause of what they do. That would make the games less interesting if you could predict the protagonist.

    I agree with you myself, I have such a crack in me, I always keep myself alone, there is so much wrong that I don't know where to start on the inside, I'm sad all the time, but you can't always see that and if you have played Watch Dogs one my life is really close to being the same so yes an assassin shouldn't be happy all the time or make so many jokes but to be more serious

    Personally I feel like yeah looking a bit deeper into the characters is better on looking into the Assassins.
    Personally I feel like Connor is a deeper, more introspective character beyond what the general consensus says. He empathizes heavily with people, he loves and even wants peace through equality. He hates that the colonists and “founding fathers” are not as keen into equality as he was. I like the idea that he was erased from history even if he was a great American hero cus he was native and Washington and the others couldn’t have themselves be less than him.

    • @MasterTemplar781
      @MasterTemplar781 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yeah i remember Connor and Samuel Adams talking "You speak of freedom yet you own a slave." and Samuel Adams tries to make it sound like his slave isn't a slave and when Connor keeps proving him wrong Samuel just says they have to focus on their own freedom first. Not to forget what Connor says about the founding father "i thought if i could keep the revolution free from their influence that those i supported would do what was right. They did i suppose do what was right. What was right for them." or Connor always trying to do what's right like when Samuel talks about bribing and lying to remove wanted status and Connor responds with "It seems dishonest does it not. We counter one lie with another everything said in paper instantly taken as truth. Why not talk to someone explain my innocence?" Connor always tries to do what is right even respecting Biddle's final wish even tho he was a maniac and Robert Faulkner protested against it. "Please do not take the Randolph as a price. All i want is to go down with my ship." "You spared him!" "That's a waste of a mighty vessel." Connor always tries to see the best in people even when talking about his father he doesn't want to kill him he wants to save him from templar influence yet he was left no other choice. Connor understands that in this conflict neither side is right but sticks with the assassin's believing things can change. In native culture it was actually normal to grow out your hair. To cut it short was to show you're on the wrong path of vengeance. That's why after killing his father he realizes he's on that path and cuts his hair short however he does leave a mowhawk and some of that long hair on the back to show that he'll find his way back to the path of the light. And considering the DLC and the comic sequel takes place after it and shows him with long hair it means that in the end he found his way back to peace.

    As someone who has had a plethora of negative experiences and feel similarly about the world and authority and I do think internally I exhibit most of these traits but I find that I, and lots of people, still have very nuisanced ways of expressing that pain or sadness. Humor as a shield, manipulation, jaded, mute; these can all be reactions to trauma and it really just depends on who it’s happening to and what happened. Especially someone who is naturally witty or funny. That doesn’t go away, it may be suppressed but it will adapt and continue to be a facet of you, even if it manifests in a much different way.

    I think drawing the comparison between the assassins and anarky from DC comics would make way more sense than batman. As you said in the video, a person becomes an assassin because they have been wronged by either a government or the people who control governments from the shadows like the templars. The batman comparison doesn't really work there because batman wasn't wronged by someone in power. His parents, who were a part of the wealthy elite and thus in a position of power, were killed by someone who was a victim of those in power, who had no choice but to commit murder because he was born into economic circumstances beyond his control. Batman would no doubt be a templar, but anarky is a different story. The whole reason Lonnie Machin became Anarky is, not because he was harmed by a government, but because someone else was. His pen pal Xuasus lost his entire family to government forces and had to live on the street. That's what motivated Lonnie to become anarky, to make sure that what happened to xuasus never happened to anyone else, to fight against those in power and unite the masses to rise up against their rulers and take back the freedom that their governments have taken from them. Anarky's motivation and ideals are almost the exact same as the assassins and would no doubt be an ally to them, whereas batman would vehemently oppose the assassin's as an ally of the templars, or just straight up be a templar himself, because in his eyes, the assassin's are criminals that are killing people who were just like his parents.

    I look at the assassins like the Jedi Order. When Bayek first started the order they weren't adjusted as a faction and had leeway with rules. And as time went on tradition and tenants were put in place to maintain stability. Altair and his assassins were calculated, emotionless and walking weapons. It wasnt until he took over did the rules start to dwindle a bit. Assassins were then allowed relationships and connections. However after Ezio the order got carried away with power hungry, controlling and stubborn people in charge, which caused the Colonial Brotherhood to be crippled and destroyed by Shay Cormac. It wasnt until Connor restored it that the assassins truly thrived together with their divisions in every country. So i think assassin personalities and ways of doing things varies depending on the time period. Bayeks time they were less careful and not a big group. Altairs they were scary, mythical legends. Ezio's they were maintained and given proper lives and balance. Colonial Times were the dark ages for them
