A friend was parked LEGALLY in a car park and when he went to leave 15 minutes before the lot closed his truck had a clamp on it. He is a volunteer firefighter and his truck has lights and all the tools he would ever need on a call out including a $7500.00 Hurst Jaws Of Life Cutter/Spreader. Took his less than 3 minutes to remove the clamp. He called the company that clamped him and waited until they arrived and he told them about their illegal activity was on multiple cameras and he then gave them the $500.00 clamp he cut up. They tried to sue him but it backfired and they lost their license. 😊

So it's not illegal to clamp someone, but it's not illegal to remove it either. This doesn't apply to state-contracted clampers, you're not legally allowed to tamper with those.

If it would have actually been against the law they wouldn't have stayed and argued with the man. They would have taken their clamp and the licence plate number from the car and reported the incident. The fact that they tried everything they could to con the man into just paying the fine tells me they just wanted money and had no legal authority.
As far as I am aware, *private* companies clamping cars in Ireland is not legal, or illegal, there are no regulations one way or another. So it's not illegal to clamp someone, but it's not illegal to remove it either. This doesn't apply to state-contracted clampers, you're not legally allowed to tamper with those.
