Tom, I've been playing guitar for most of my 42 years on this earth but never took it seriously b/c I was constantly told that a career in music was futile, or something "other people do". Some of my favorites are "Get used to being hungry" and "It's all in who you know not what you know." This had the effect of putting people like yourself on a pedestal in my mind, b/c to me you've all done something I could never hope to. Only recently have I decided that I'm going to recommit myself to music and make the most of it. Will I ever "make it"? It's highly doubtful, but that's ok b/c I love it and that's enough for me. Seeing you open up about your own personal doubts and struggles makes it seem so much more accessible. It brings accomplished players off off the pedestal I've put them on allowed me to see them as normal people no different than me which builds my confidence. Thanks for what you're doing, these videos are a highlight of my day. I hope others are getting the same benefits that I am.

@@revelry1969 Oh it wasn't a put down. I put it in quotes because he refers to it as a Gretsch Shitbox in the previous video. In that video it is out of site, and he is playing through it. I have a vintage shitbox of my own by that other fartbox brand: Fender.

I remember reading a Dicky Betts interview where he said he loved Jerry's playing but couldn't listen to him all the time or he would play just like him. Kinda interesting. I love them both too. Both Legends. Liz Reed has been my favorite song since I was 4, I'm 40 now. I'm a sucker for an instrumental.

Thinking about the question on mistakes amateurs make: One of the architects at my last workplace was a leading expert in building envelope and ran seminars and courses on the subject. He once told me the way he opens a seminar is with this: "the only reason I am standing up here talking to you, and you are there listening to me, is I have made more mistakes than you. It's stuck with me ever since and I think applies to many things, especially guitar playing. keep up the great vids, Tom.

    Dear Tom,
Seems like every five years I find a "new" guitar player that really inspires me to be ME. I feel that inspiration is the most valuable gift any musician can give to another. Can´t really tell you how much I appreciate Homeskoolin´. I´m a huge vintage guitar nerd but I´d rather have a beer with you and talk for one hour than spend that hour with any of your guitars! You have crossed that line where the actual gear doesn´t really matter. Thanks and greetings from Finland!

The coolest thing is, when you're jonesing for a new video, you can always go back to the early volumes and still be just as inspired to pick up your guitar as the last one you saw. It's just like the old great albums. Not a bad cut on the whole record. Happy Holidays Tom. Enjoy the break.

thanks for mentioning Ted (Greene) I knew Ted when I lived in Los Angeles, I went to his place in Woodland Hills before he moved into the apartment. He showed me things that I still have yet to grasp on guitar. I honestly think he might have had criticisms for Bach if he had met him...Ted was one serious musician...

This channel is saving me from the pandemic related blues. Thanks so much. Grateful Dead and Ted Greene in one video!!! The two biggest influences on my musical life. I took lessons from Ted when I was 14 in 1968. I saw a couple hundred Dead shows from '69 to '95, and knew all of those guys. Being into the Dead led me to so many different kinds of music, from Branford Marsalis to Ry Cooder (another favorite of mine). I also like to hear you mention all of the great bands that you like from that time. I saw 'em all, from the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Hendrix, Joplin, so, so many. Your videos are for music lovers, not necessarily guitar players. Luckily I'm both. I can't thank you enough..

Tom first off this is hands down my favorite channel on TH-cam right now. A bit of everything playing, humor, history, and real world experience. Question, although your lead playing is amazing its your rhythm playing and your right hand that gets me the most. What are some of the things that really got you good at playing rhythm guitar? Both techniques and bands? Thanks man, really inspiring stuff!

Thank you so much for your time. You are probably the most passionate guitarist I've ever seen or heard. Funny thing about what you said about your finger injury, I cut the top of my thumb off with a sawzall, I'd leave a trail of blood on the fretboard, but I played through the pain and now I'm a better player because I had to think outside the box. Nowadays, I don't believe there is a box. Thanks 👍 man, Steve Potter.

I'm tuning in from England and loving your musical references and I'm surprised by all of the British players that have inspired you. Having been weaned on prog rock (I'm 55) from my brother's vinyl collection of Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and Yes, and folk rock of Caravan and Camel, personally I'm dredging back in to the deep south of the USA and digging out The Allman Bros, Live at Filmore, and early Lynard Skynard and SRV. Also looking up all the great musicians you reference in these vlogs. It's strange how this immersive talk about music is inspiring me to play more...keep 'em coming Tom, and let's have another duet from you and Sarah soon. Stay safe, keep well.😷

Smashed finger will always hurt in a certain spot. Right where he or she stitched it together. Glad I still have mine. It took forever to get it back where it didn’t hurt on every note. Same finger, right in the middle of the nail. Caused by a Domino clutch lever on a Harley Legerro (no ball end). Thanks for bringing back that memory. 1971, I remember sitting in class giving everyone the middle finger the next day. Well...It was thumping..

Tom, those kids are lucky to learn from you because you are a REAL musician. I never had lessons, I found them to be counterproductive- when I was starting out- if I had a guitar teacher like you back then, I may have stuck with it. But I developed my ear, and that skill is so so so important.
I have just recently tried to embrace theory and add it. Thanks for making it palatable and interesting for me.

You talked about your finger accident and about the use of the thumb, reminded me of a teacher that said to me something interesting: "the hand is part of a living organism, you can teach it to do anything in its physical limits". I saw Tommy Emmanuel saying something in this same train of thought, that you have to expose your hands to new challenges and your hands will adapt to what you want to do.
Thanks for the knowledge you're spreading, man. Love Betts and Garcia, and agree with you, they sound a bit alike in their note choice, but as you said another time, each one with their own persolalities. Cheers from Brazil!

You've managed to create the best thing on youtube from your garage. You've kept me practicing through all this chaos. I discovered your page a little late in the game so I'm playing catchup. Quick little thought on Jerry's playing is his abundant use of half step bends. His way of bending from a "wrong note" to a "right note" created such a nice sense of gentle tension. Anyway, just a passing thought. Love your playing and be well. Thanks for the channel, Tom!

First I want to thank you for putting this series out. It's so refreshing to hear someone go past stunt guitar and get to the real challenge of saying something. A paraphrased quote from Elias Marsallis quote about impressing people and getting an applause versus moving people and getting fans comes to mind and I'm sure you're getting a lot of fans on this show.
I don't want to get too in the weeds with this question because I know you covered a lot extensively in the rig run down, but I wanted to know how how approach dialing in your sound at home vs. stage vs. studio. You probably have enough gear that you can just bring a bunch of different things to a session and get whatever you need - but if you had, say a small fly rig and one or two guitars and had to rehearse, play and record remotely I was just wondering how you'd make it work in that situation? A lot of players only have a single amp, a handful of effects or a multieffect and a guitar or two and (back when people were still playing live music in public places in front of people), I used to see a lot of guitarists really struggle with dialing in tones in their bedroom and then not have it translate on stage.
Sorry for the convoluted question and the foray into gear - but I'm more interested in your problem solving approach than "Use this guitar and amp with these mikes". You should seriously consider a tip jar for the channel, or a patreon or something or at a minimum some links to where we can buy some Buk product. When you get the Tom Time shirts for sale, please let us know! Thanks again for the great playing and generosity.

Thanks for mentioning Ted Greene and your thoughts on him. I "discovered" him a number of years ago and he blew my mind. I picked up a number of books and have the "Modern Chrod Progressions" near the music stand. A bit skeered to open it tho but I will. Peace Tom and Fam.

More wisdom, no BS. These videos are awesome on so many levels, it is incredible. Never seen nuttin' like them! Todays takeaway for me, and maybe many of us in these strange times. Tom talked about the busted finger, the struggle, and also the eventual benefits (go go pinky power ;) ).
Strength often comes through adversity. We need that now ;)

That would be a sweet video. Up and down the neck to dead music. Loose and colourful! Just jumped on the bandwagon Tom! Love it. Keep going

I like your face when you talk about People compairing Kemper Profiles and Stuff like that. ;-) . I had a Kemper and I thought that these Michael Britt Sounds are the Heaven of Guitar Amps. But I hated all this Computer Stuff, the programming ect. Then I luckily bought a 1977 4x12 Red Marshall Box from an old Hammond Player who's Monitor that was. For 300 Bucks. I fell in love with it . I thought about powering the Kemper and play with that . Then I saw a 1990 JCM 800 100 W Marshall Head in red. I bought it for 1000 Bucks. Plugged it into the Box , strummed one Chord and... selled the Kemper over Ebay. I never had an Amp like this Marshall. I had Fenders, Carvin and some Modelling Amps like Boss Katana. Always two Channel or three Channel Amps , where you switch the channels . Then I saw your Rigdown Video and knew that my search is over. I now have a Pedalboard with some Pedals that i like and the one Channel Marshall. Thats my Amp heaven now !

OMG Buk! You’re subs have gone up tremendously. I remember when it was less than 500 for the longest time. So glad you’re having a whole new audience. You really have a kick ass channel that I’m totally addicted too. Keep up the great work man. You’re making a positive difference to so many of us. 🍷😎👍🏼

Hey Tom, your videos have become "must see TV" for me on a daily basis, I have been a fan for many years and its nice that the long drought of content has ended for now. I am also a lover of small vintage amp and that Gretsch/Valco is a nice one, that is not one with 6973's is it? Anyway my real question is do you is do you ever write songs with Sarah or is not doing that the secret to a happy marriage? Love you both! When do I get to buy a Rolling Bukovac T-shirt!!!!

I've been watching these videos daily and I've learned so much. This lesson was particularly impactful. Thanks for doing this, especially during this crazy time in the world. You're right, there is so much to learn when it comes to guitar, let alone music! I find I can overwhelm myself which just leads me to be even harder on myself. What's been helping me though is, maybe you'd agree with this or not, but it's asking the questions "what kind of player do I want to be? What's my voice on the guitar, and how can I use all this to help cultivate all that?" I've definitely haven't arrived, for sure, always learning, or at least trying my best to! Thanks again man for these lessons, really helping me to get close to answering those exact questions for myself.

Love your playing and I can feel the emotion! I hope you continue these videos and tell about more experiences. Love it, Tom! #clevelandrocks
