Okay, long winded, but as I’ve intuited you as a dude that loves to chew the fat over a good mug of whatever with a good yarn and a fellow Beatle fanatic, I thought you might enjoy. Besides, you’re the one that mentioned Ringo’s ride cymbal with such great reverence…… :) My good friend Doane Perry told me a great Ringo story. Doane has been the drummer in Jethro Tull for most of the last three decades. He and his wife were at a party and at some point found themselves isolated off on a couple of couches with Ringo and his wife Barbara. Doane told Ringo he owed him a big thanks as if it weren't for him he'd just be half assed plunking out classical music on a piano in a living room somewhere. Ringo asked if he was a musician to which Doane replied yes and that he was the drummer in JT. Ringo came out of his seat claiming he was a huge Tull fan and Doane said he knew every song on even the most recent Tull albums which most of us have never even heard. He proceeded for the next two hours asking about his drumming (Can I ask you a question? lol) on all the the Tull songs and records (Doane is a great drummer). Ringo said he would love to have Doane come down to any All Stars show or rehearsal whenever he wanted to. Needless to say Doane left the party quite flattered that one of the Beatles even considered him on the map and while hitting it off, he figured any connection made most likely in typical LA fashion ended at the party. Still, just for the hell of it he called Ringo's management several months later to offer Ringo passes to a Tull show at the Greek here in LA. He thought probably fat chance of him showing, but was surprised with a phone call an hour later from Ringo himself thanking him for thinking of him, but he couldn't make it as he was in England. He didn't pass the call off to management or some lacky - Ringo made the call personally from another country. Cut to a couple of years later and Doane gets a call out of the blue and it's Ringo wanting him to come down for the All Stars last rehearsal before they hit the road. Doane goes down and the place is just swimming with journalists covering the whole thing and ET doing interviews. Ringo spots him and Doane asks if he's gonna be in the way of all the chaos and Ringo tells him "absolutely not, just fuck them and let them do what they do" and invites him to sit up on stage as they're gonna run through a few songs. After the run through Ringo asks Doane if he wants to check out his kit. Doane sits down and starts playing a bit and after a minute or so realizes that Ringo's ride cymbal is the most fantastic ride cymbal he's ever heard. He stops playing and tells Ringo so. At this point everyone in the band has collected around the kit as Ringo says it's the only ride cymbal he's used since the mid 60's. Doane said it's as if a glow from the heavens started to appear on the cymbal as Ringo confirmed the onslaught of band member questions as to which recordings and the realization that that cymbal was used on every Beatles song from Sgt. Peppers on. Doane said by this time the cameras were on and a couple dozen or so people had gathered all standing silent in reverence to a stupid cymbal like it was the discovery of the Shroud of Turin or something lol. Say what you want about Ringo’s talents and greatness…. I doubt any speechless crowd ever gathered around to stare at Buddy Rich’s ride. Ringo drove more musical magic than any drummer dead or alive. A great dude too. Loving the Homeskoolin’ Tom! Not a better way to start my day!

People often ask other people how you know when you go from a beginner to an intermediate player. I learned the answer to that today from this video. The answer is when you go from being impressed by flashy solos to being knocked on your ass by a chord progression played and voiced in a way you never thought of before 😆. Great video. Love it.
Everybody loves Ringo. He was the only Beatle to play on the other three Beatles early solo records. Ringo is so under-rated. How can you not be when you are in a band with three giants like George, John, and Paul? I think history will be kind to Ringo's career and he will get recognition as one of the most important and influential drummers of all time. You are a lucky man to have had Ringo on the kit behind you.
I’ve listened to drum instructors on TH-cam speak with reverence about Ringo’s drum playing. It gives you a whole new respect for the guy. And I liked him a lot before I listened to those comments.
Tom, I went back and watched episode 1 back in the old days when these were called corona lessons. Is there anything you have taken away from doing all these videos? You seem like you have fun doing these now and we all appreciate your time.

We need a Tom Bukovac podcast. First guest Kenny Greenberg. I mean shit I watched an almost 2 hour Rig Rundown with that guy and I don't even own an electric guitar. I could listen to you (and guys like Kenny Greenberg) talk all day about music, musicians, chord recipes, tone, touch, guitars, sessions, that ladder in the background. You have a strong point of view and unique insight into a world most don't have access to. It's the same reason comedians are so successful with podcasts. They aren't doing material but just talking to other comedians about the business, the insider stuff in an entertaining way. That's the stuff people crave. The insider stuff. And you have it in spades man. You're an incredible musician, with great stories and a ton of knowledge about something very few people have, and you deliver it in such an entertaining way that even people with zero interest in guitar would tune in. Sponsors are throwing truckloads of money at podcasts these days let them back up the Brinks truck to the Bukovac garage!

He could have been he’s good enough but his parents saw him as a developer of neighborhoods and left him responsible for family business...life so sadly wasted, - I love your tid bits- your insights, your stories. Joe used to have (or still has) an EQ at the end of his signal chain he said so his tone could be shaped to wherever he was performing ..... always care about what and how you're playing and what transpires on a Homeskoolin' vid ,always full of gems that's being delivered conversationally by my best friend ... thanks Tom you all stay safe and well
Day 3 We were pinned down behind a line of percussion. The Danes were throwing everything at us, pipes, crepes, bongs, waffles, it was all we could do to keep our timing in tact and our sanity in check.
for a guy that doesn't read music you sure have a spectacular., relationship with the fingerboard , I am truly jelious , you have sent me back to the many hours of middle of the night practice sessions. listening to a homework session in which you state about giving up music , I just went through that recently , thanks for bringing me back , at my age I hope I can hang
I saw Joe Walsh a few years ago in a medium size club. His rig sounded fantastic. I have been playing a long time, it took Tom and Covid for the message to finally sink-in, stop cycling endlessly through new equipment to get a better tone, learn to use the treble knob and choose more tasteful notes over changes, Tom should of posted this video 40 years ago! These videos are inspiring. Thanks
Thank you Tom so much. You are so right. We get so hung up on stage tone. Out there it's not the same but we forget in our obsession and knob twiddling. It can be horrible at the mercy of the mixer guy. Set and forget. Richards. No effects. Fenders even beefed up don't cut it for me live. Unless the guitar is up front a la Beck, virtuoso. Thank you for the tip on treble in the mix. Your studio experience ragged edge stories are great. PTSD! I can imagine but not quite that bad.
I stopped playing my guitar for 9 years.. Got worn out on the bar sean and band drama ... I stumbled on your videos and it inspired me to dust off the old guitar and practice again... Just wanted to say thanks.. Your the best👍
I cannot wait to put these chords into a loop later and then see what happens. That progression and some of what you were playing reminded me of that first "Jazz is Dead" record, which if you're not familiar with Tom, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's basically just a bunch of badasses (Jimmy Herring, Jeff Sipe, Alphonso Johnson etc.) covering the Dead, and it absolutely rips.

Chromatic melody notes...I dig it. About a year before finding your musings...I started getting into The Beatles again. The melodic genius... almost unreal that a group of twenty somethings created this music. For example...the E6 at the beginning of “Oh Darling” has no better lead in to the opening A chord. Our ears have been hearing this genius for decades. That’s why this C, Fm, D, Gm progression works as long as the melody is hitting all the thirds. I’m picking up what you’re laying down, Tom. Thanks and it’s appreciated.
Great advice for playing in bars. You gotta keep it simple. I used to get such a great tone practicing then heard it all disappear when we'd set up and start playing. Very interesting about Walsh and the extra treble thing.
Hey Tom… I love the way you were kind of arpeggiating the chords moving from the B flat - C - and back down to the root….you make it look so effortless..but I know its just 100000 hours of practice !!!! Thanks Again ...

I've been watching your playing style 'Little Tommy Bukovac out of Cleveland' ;) OK, so i can play v. (very) roughly the same notes as you do, in roughly a similar order - sometimes, But it just don't sound the same. No surprise there, but I'm drinking it in. Also, I I see you use your middle finger way more than where I have been for ever - trying to tackle this damn sh1t with my ring finger. Things gonna change around here - for a while - see if it suits me , like it so clearly, clearly suits you. You make sublime seem effortless. I'm not one for spewing out compliments, or following the herd .. but .. man..! So good. Thanks.
Tom, one of my favorite questions to ask fellow musicians is, "how do you like your mix?". Some people love their own instrument blaring...but if I'm too loud I tend to play timid. I know you love vocal, can you describe how your thoughts on a headphone mix?

My method is setting my volume in the heat of a solo while everyone is bashing away... then work backwards with my volume knob for the rest of the night. Great tips. Love Walsh.
Emotion. So many talented musicians try to compensate the lack there of with speed or technicality. Feel, timing, and emotion are the biggest factors to me. Little Tommy got bucket loads.

Arena vs club - spot on! When I started playing large venues, it was an epiphany and I had to change my tones in order for them to translate and reach the guy in the nosebleeders. Reverbs and delays become almost superfluous. Good word, Buk.

Tom, I noticed the Gibson/ Fender phenomena playing in a club on Bourbon St. I brought a Les Paul and Telecaster with me that night with a Marshall amp. Set my stage tone with my Les Paul. Halfway through the first set I decided to switch to my Tele and I couldn't hear myself in the mix. Walked up to my amp and turned it just a little louder, still couldn't hear myself. Turned up a little louder and added some mids and I became a little more audible. After the first break, I went back to my Les Paul. Damn, did I have to turn everything down cause I was way in the mix with my amp set for my Tele with a Les Paul. It was neat to hear you talk about this cause I've experienced it. I was an avid Fender guy before then and now I play Gibson style guitars with humbuckers in my rock band. Who Dat! Loved that shout out (acknowledgement) to Drew Brees a few shows ago.

Tom, I absolutely love the videos, I've never been so religiously glued to any content regarding guitar as much as this, so thank you. Regarding what you said about Fenders not cutting through as well live as humbucker based guitars, I really agree with you on this, as I have had this problem with my tele at venues myself, which brings me to my question, I see you're a big fan of EQ pedals, would pushing the mids on one of those live maybe help solve the fender clarity issue or is there another variable to that that I'm not considering? Massive respect to you brother, peace.
So, this is better than GOT when I was into that. I'm an ICU physician and dealing with the opposite of staying home as I work too much now and wish I could hang with the family. But, I had several days off though for my mine and my wife's B-day and watched your YT vids. They're awesome and interesting. I'm in my 50s and just picked up guitar again several months ago after decades of playing in high-school, as a release really. I watch you play and it's inspiring how you play guitar, amazing really what you know. Your mastery of chords is impressive. I watch and I think I can do something like that after practicing rather than feeling defeated. Although it might be 600 years. But, you teach things at a more advanced level. It's most likely a majority of your audience who understands what you're saying. But, for us intermediate beginners, can you spare 1-2 minutes explaining what a C over G chord is or B flat over whatever. I Googled it, but you know it would be nice to have you explain it if you could. Thanks for what you're doing, stay safe.

I watched " The Rain People" as suggested. I thought about it for a while. Kind of "Easy Rider" in reverse. Like they might cross paths going in opposite directions, somewhere along the line, metaphorically. The metaphor being, I guess, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. That unattainable pot of whatever we all chase from time to time. An interesting movie. Don't want to give away much to other people who haven't taken the time to see it. I saw it as a challenge from Hanks to you, and all of us, to deepen our lives through film. What did you think?

I also had a used, vintage, and consignment store in Chicago for 3 years. Can you share some stories as a store owner? Great gear deals, cool contacts made, time spent under a roof (with or without customers), and time spent being a "therapist" to all the musicians who never seemed to leave (but left a LOT of fingerprints)? We need a Tom Bukovac podcast. First guest Kenny Greenberg. I mean shit I watched an almost 2 hour Rig Rundown with that guy and I don't even own an electric guitar. I could listen to you (and guys like Kenny Greenberg) talk all day about music, musicians, chord recipes, tone, touch, guitars, sessions, that ladder in the background. You have a strong point of view and unique insight into a world most don't have access to. It's the same reason comedians are so successful with podcasts. They aren't doing material but just talking to other comedians about the business, the insider stuff in an entertaining way. That's the stuff people crave. The insider stuff. And you have it in spades man. You're an incredible musician, with great stories and a ton of knowledge about something very few people have, and you deliver it in such an entertaining way that even people with zero interest in guitar would tune in. Sponsors are throwing truckloads of money at podcasts these days let them back up the Brinks truck to the Bukovac garage!

I was digging in my brain trying to think what the first two chords and the line you played over them was reminding me of. Don’t know if you ever heard 10CC ‘s “I’m Mandy Fly Me”, but that’s it. I used to crank that in my headphones late at night when I was teen in the late 70s. Brought back some old memories.

I love your shows, I was RIM at MTSU for about 2 yrs, Chad taught himself bEJ and Tommy Emanuel (yeah he can play it 👍❤️ no joke) he has me watching you, I sincerely wish he’d been a studio guy. He could have been he’s good enough but his parents saw him as a developer of neighborhoods and left him responsible for family business...life so sadly wasted, - I love your tid bits- your insights, your stories. We were pinned down behind a line of percussion. The Danes were throwing everything at us, pipes, crepes, bongs, waffles, it was all we could do to keep our timing in tact and our sanity in check.

I saw Joe Walsh a few years ago in a medium size club. His rig sounded fantastic. I have been playing a long time, it took Tom and Covid for the message to finally sink-in, stop cycling endlessly through new equipment to get a better tone, learn to use the treble knob and choose more tasteful notes over changes, Tom should of posted this video 40 years ago! You are so right. We get so hung up on stage tone. Out there it's not the same but we forget in our obsession and knob twiddling. It can be horrible at the mercy of the mixer guy.

I cannot wait to put these chords into a loop later and then see what happens. That progression and some of what you were playing reminded me of that first "Jazz is Dead" record, which if you're not familiar with Tom, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's basically just a bunch of badasses (Jimmy Herring, Jeff Sipe, Alphonso Johnson etc.) covering the Dead, and it absolutely rips.

Chromatic melody notes...I dig it. About a year before finding your musings...I started getting into The Beatles again. The melodic genius... almost unreal that a group of twenty somethings created this music. For example...the E6 at the beginning of “Oh Darling” has no better lead in to the opening A chord. Our ears have been hearing this genius for decades. That’s why this C, Fm, D, Gm progression works as long as the melody is hitting all the thirds. I’m picking up what you’re laying down, Tom. Thanks and it’s appreciated.
Great advice for playing in bars. You gotta keep it simple. I used to get such a great tone practicing then heard it all disappear when we'd set up and start playing. Very interesting about Walsh and the extra treble thing.

My method is setting my volume in the heat of a solo while everyone is bashing away... then work backwards with my volume knob for the rest of the night. Great tips. Love Walsh.
Emotion. So many talented musicians try to compensate the lack there of with speed or technicality. Feel, timing, and emotion are the biggest factors to me. Little Tommy got bucket loads.

Arena vs club - spot on! When I started playing large venues, it was an epiphany and I had to change my tones in order for them to translate and reach the guy in the nosebleeders. Reverbs and delays become almost superfluous. Good word, Buk.

Tom, I noticed the Gibson/ Fender phenomena playing in a club on Bourbon St. I brought a Les Paul and Telecaster with me that night with a Marshall amp. Set my stage tone with my Les Paul. Halfway through the first set I decided to switch to my Tele and I couldn't hear myself in the mix. Walked up to my amp and turned it just a little louder, still couldn't hear myself. Turned up a little louder and added some mids and I became a little more audible. After the first break, I went back to my Les Paul. Damn, did I have to turn everything down cause I was way in the mix with my amp set for my Tele with a Les Paul. It was neat to hear you talk about this cause I've experienced it. I was an avid Fender guy before then and now I play Gibson style guitars with humbuckers in my rock band. Who Dat! Loved that shout out (acknowledgement) to Drew Brees a few shows ago.

Tom, I absolutely love the videos, I've never been so religiously glued to any content regarding guitar as much as this, so thank you. Regarding what you said about Fenders not cutting through as well live as humbucker based guitars, I really agree with you on this, as I have had this problem with my tele at venues myself, which brings me to my question, I see you're a big fan of EQ pedals, would pushing the mids on one of those live maybe help solve the fender clarity issue or is there another variable to that that I'm not considering? So, this is better than GOT when I was into that. I'm an ICU physician and dealing with the opposite of staying home as I work too much now and wish I could hang with the family. But, I had several days off though for my mine and my wife's B-day and watched your YT vids. They're awesome and interesting. I'm in my 50s and just picked up guitar again several months ago after decades of playing in high-school, as a release really. I watch you play and it's inspiring how you play guitar, amazing really what you know. Your mastery of chords is impressive. I watch and I think I can do something like that after practicing rather than feeling defeated. Although it might be 600 years. But, you teach things at a more advanced level. It's most likely a majority of your audience who understands what you're saying. But, for us intermediate beginners, can you spare 1-2 minutes explaining what a C over G chord is or B flat over whatever. I Googled it, but you know it would be nice to have you explain it if you could. Thanks for what you're doing, stay safe.

I watched " The Rain People" as suggested. I thought about it for a while. Kind of "Easy Rider" in reverse. Like they might cross paths going in opposite directions, somewhere along the line, metaphorically. The metaphor being, I guess, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. That unattainable pot of whatever we all chase from time to time. An interesting movie. Don't want to give away much to other people who haven't taken the time to see it. I saw it as a challenge from Hanks to you, and all of us, to deepen our lives through film. What did you think?
