Back in the day we use to buy album's because of the covers. The whole experience of bringing home a new album, putting it on the record player and checking out the pictures, words to the songs and song credits was awesome. There were no computers or anyway to hear it ahead of time unless your buddy had a copy and you loved it so much you had to have it.

My 16 year old son has his first good stereo system in his bedroom and I turned him loose in my old CD collection that was packed away. He's learning to play guitar and seems to be gravitating toward focusing on bass. He's in a major Pink Floyd phase, but he also loves Fleetwood Mac and King Crimson and is dipping his toes into Sabbath a bit. He enjoys hearing about when I was his age and how I used to sit in room between speakers that were 10 feet apart reading the liner notes to albums like 2112 and listening to them over and over. He's got the bug Tom!

Some years ago I wrote to Barbara Dickson who sang background vocals on the City to City album and asked her for any details or memories about Gerry Rafferty in the studio. She said she never once heard him sing out of tune and that everything he sang was beautiful. I also recall her saying "He just sounds like that." Thanks Uncle Larry for shining a light on Gerry. City to City and Night Owl are both great albums.

Most underrated is Elliot Easton from the Cars. His leads are perfect. The dude from The Knack is another contender.

Brian Setzer is phenomenal. He was really good with The Stray Cats early on, but got way better by 1990. His Hot Licks video is one of the coolest i've ever seen. The jazz in his playing is impeccable and his singing was/is incredible.

Thousands of underrated guitar players but one who you've mentioned in passing a few times is Waddy Wachtel. Everyone should listen to his wah wah solo on Warren Zevon's Charlies Medicine. Along with Hendrix's Voodoo Chile, Clapton's White Room and almost everything by Marc Ford (another one!), as good as wah wah gets.

Also wanted to say my favorite part about each of these videos is how you get me all worked up like you're just going on some random tangent with profound thoughts about music or life with a little bit of music before you're going to get into a more straight-laced lesson like most people would and then you're like "well alright, that's enough for you to stew on. Peace." Every time I expect there to be more. Every. Time. And yet I'm never left disappointed.

Thank you for all of the Home Skoolin’ posts Tom. Definitely something positive to look forward to during this craziness. My son is 4 as well. His current top tracks include George Harrison’s What is Life, Queen’s We Will Rock You, Nancy Sinatra’s Bang Bang, and some crazy techno jam he learned at school called Gummi Bear (?). When he requests them it’s either a proud Dad moment or an understanding of “if it moves you... you like it”

Kids and Records: my kids absolutely love going with me to record stores (yes, there are still some around, I live just outside Pittsburgh). My kids are early, mid teens. Even since they were very young, my kids have loved the Stones, Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc... all the greats... they even have their friends getting into this stuff. More than one of their friends parents have come up to me and told me that they are thrilled that their kid is into the great music of the 60s, 70s, 80s. More parents should try to expose their kids to this music, the kids will probably embrace it and actually love it.

Tom, Absolutely love the show and thank you so much for sharing a lifetime of knowledge. For me the art of listening to music and being able to pick up on the details and intricacies has been something I've had to work on all my life and will always have to work on. I used to love sitting around a playing John Cougar singles and listening to my mom's Billy Joel records.....it's all I had. We weren't fortunate enough to have anything available to us as far as instruments and probably more importantly a real musical compass or someone that could really break things down or even share thoughts about what made the song what it was. The gift you are giving your kids with the quality rides to school is amazing and will play out in so many favorable ways whether they choose to use it or not. I think maybe what the gentleman or so many of the subscribers that seem struggle with is referring to the art of listening and how to constructively listen. It requires a greater commitment than anyone realizes in my opinion. On the surface most people only hear music for the simplest elements rather than the complexity or simplicity of everything that went on to make the song great and on another level, how the instruments interact with each other. It would be great to be able to understand how you may take any of the songs you consider "vital nutrients" and share with us what your ears process. Sorry the long windy comment...

Heart, Yes, Rafferty, Rush. I can't tell you how many times that has been my listening lineup for an evening. Add in some Tull, and Golden Earring sprinkled with a dash of King Crimson and I'm one happy camper. All greats. All unique. All have stood the test of time. The best part of bands like these is you hear something you've never noticed before most every time you listen to them.

Hey Tom, as a certifiable Luddite, it took my daughters to show me how I could comment here...your fireside chats are a glimmer of light in this crazy situation and I want to thank you. It’s your sincerity and gift as a raconteur of extraordinary skill that keeps me smiling buddy, oh and thank you for unlocking the secret to Magic Man, one of rock guitars epic mysteries......Rob from Toronto

Baker Street, probably my favourite song. It was one of those melancholy songs which sort of captured the times it was released. I think about 76. The video of the guy doing the solo section on the tele was part inspiration for me to start playing myself. Fantastic run down at the end of the solo. The sax sounds so powerful, but then the guitar screams into life,,,,,,,,,,

I love the ebow! One of my favorite tools. Something about the intro at first reminded me of the theramin sounds on the original ghostbusters library scene. You the man, Tom! Thanks for givin’ all us guitarists a bone to chew on. Getting me through.

"Baker Street" is such an awesome song. Back around 97, before Spotify, before TH-cam, before the Googles.... My band desperately wanted to cover it. But we didn't know what it was called or who sang it. All we could do was call the local classic rock station and sing that guitar melody. That hook! And we asked the DJ to play it for us so we could learn it. We weren't even a covers band. We did all original music. So, anyway, we hooked my Tascam four track up to the radio and waited..... Eventually the Foos did a version soon after but ours was better.

Hi Tom, Love your shows. You mentioned the B52s today. Man they are good. I think Kate Pierson is the best. When she sings I usually start to cry. Tears of joy.......

Your comment about the kids in the car and the music reminds me of my childhood. My dad was no musician and he probably wasn’t thinking about how it would affect his children. But those 8 track cartridges influenced me tremendously. Elvis’s live aloha album with James burton. Allman bro’s. Brothers and sisters. And a Neil Diamond live album with a great female electric player. Those guitars still influence me.

Robbie McIntosh did one of my favorite solos on the Pretenders' 'Middle of the Road.' Rollicking and boisterous and totally rock and roll. Robbie is definitely underrated.

Good description of that solo. Middle Of The Road has become my "go to" when I need to remember what rock and roll is all about. An absolute perfect example of drums, vocals, rhythm guitar, bass, harmonica, lead guitar....and don't forget the "whooo ooh ooh ooh" background vocals. Get in the road.....

Wow, I'm so digging your videos! They are so real and fresh. I wish they were a tad longer though. Still I think despite them not being very long your info and playing is super tasty. Besides that your infectious personality is super easy to warm up to. I hope you keep going even after this pandemic is over. I not only subscribed, I turned notifications on. That's rare for me.
