My Uncle bought a black and gold TA new in 1977. He is no longer with us but my Aunt still has it, 8500 original miles. Still has the factory rubber and original battery, according to my Aunt, its never even seen rain, and my uncle had more time waxing it than he did in the drivers seat. He picked it up from the dealership in June of 77, immediately drove to the college where she was still in school, took her to watch the movie in then proposed later that evening. Suffice to say that car has some sentimental value and wont be going up for sale any time soon.
This car and the 68 Charger and 68 Mustang in Bullitt started it all for me 40 years ago. The 77 front grille really makes the car so iconic. When the grille changed in 79 the Trans Am went down a couple notches, nothing great lasts forever..
@ robertwheatley2471. I’m probably ten years older than you are because the first two sports cars that I fell in love with were the 1963 Sting Ray when I saw it running on the road at a red light next to my father’s car and the 64 and a half Mustang that we saw on display the 64 Worlds Fair in New York just before they made their official debut on the market. The only other cars I noticed at the time were the 65 Riviera, 65 Sedan Deville and the 66 Imperial as well as the 4dr Continental convertible. It was a great time for cars and an amazing time to be alive and to listen to the radio. Everything seemed so hopeful. We even had a traveling sprinkler that rolled up the hose by itself and shut itself off when it came close to the house at the end of its route. Everything seemed like the future was going to be amazing. We were on our way the moon for goodness sake’s. I wonder what happened.
@@LlyleHunter -Born in '67 I like all cars from the '50s and 60s. They had individual style and character unlike the cars today. Mostly I prefer musclecars having owned a 70 SS350 in the 80's and then eventually a '69 Charger R/T 440 with a *factory* 4-speed that I took to car shows. I've made several mistakes over the years but selling that Charger in '96 was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made.
I was 9 years old when Smokey and Star Wars came out and I was obsessed with both, but had the poster of the Trans Am on my wall, and only boxes of Star Wars trading cards.
It was my favorite car to spot on the road when I was young. We have a Bandit impersonater in our area with the car and all. We recently shot some promotional videos with him. The filming renewed my love for th 7:23 e car!
Sweet collection! Only the Beetle "Herbie" is the wrong year of build. The front fenders are of the wrong area. How cool is that, that this TA runs under Burt Raynolds name? Crazy and so cool!
Actually Burt's last Trans Am was a 1979 and he signed the dash. It sold in Florida for $317,500. Also, as Hal Needham said, only 3 Trans Ams were used in the movie, 1 for advertising or up close scenes and 2 for stunts.
OK a lot of things to cover here, 1. The engine call out on the Shaker hood scoop is wrong for 3 reasons on that car. 1st the cars in the movie have the call out 6.6 Litre which was used for the base 400 pontiac engine which had 180 hp and 325 ft lb of torque, 2. The TA 6.6 call out is for the W72 400 which cameout in 1977 with 220hp and 320 ft lbs ,it also had factory chrome valve covers. 3. The engine shown in this video is not a Pontiac engine it is a 403 Olds engine the oil fill tube in front of the shaker is a dead give away. It had 185hp and 320 ft lbs . The W72 was carried on to 1979 and was factory rated at that time 220 hp and 320 ft lbs the cars in fact put out 260-280 net hp and could 1/4 mile in high 15 to low 14 sec range. The 1979 w72 came with a 4 spd manual trans only.
Except you are wrong as well lol! The1977 W72 TA 6.6 came with 200hp and was only upgraded in 1978 to 220hp. I had both the 1977 L78 6.6 litre and the W72 TA 6.6 :)
@blackbird1448 the factory rating for the 1977 was 200hp , because it was available with both the Manual and automatic transmissions the automatic draws more hosre power to run that the 4 speed manual., W72 is a performance package for the L78 400 they are both L78 engines . The 220hp factory rating was an under-rated number .
@@blackbird1448- go easy on our informed friend, lol...! When you look at the way he’s set out all that he’s written, it seems to me he’s simply made a mistake & written 220 instead of 200. 78 was better than the 76/77 anyway, had 20 more hp & a better ttop design. I always hated the hurst ttops, you can tell they're an after thought & fit like sht. The 78 looks way better with the fisher ttops coming all the way back to the door frame unlike the 77 sitting like 4" forward of the door.frame, and the fishers are wider towards the center also. Just a much better design..
I was 9 years old when the movie came out. Always wanted one of those cars. But the sad truth is that despite the enormous engine displacement they were completely smogged out with emissions crap due to the energy crisis of the 1970s. 180 hp.......Accord numbers. Decent amount of torque, I guess. The restomods have 700hp engines stuffed into them but the ass end kicks out with just a touch on the throttle.

If this is one of the cars from the movie Smokey and the Bandit and you have the "same" cb as was used by Reynolds, where is the cb antenna in the middle of the t-tops? Just asking...
While it's a nice car, we can all agree, whoever "restored" it for Mr. Reynolds needs to be better with details: 1) It's got the Pontiac W72 (400 CID, 200 HP version) hood scoop decal, but it has the Oldsmobile 403 under the hood. It should say "6.6 LITRE". The VIN gets the win and confirms it: 2 for Pontiac, W for Trans Am, 87 for two door coupe, K for 403 CID V8 with four barrel, Oldsmobile produced, RPO code "L80", 7 for 1977 model year, N for Norwood, OH assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Norwood plant closed in August 1987. The hood scoop decal mistake is often made as the reproduction decal companies include the "T/A 6.6" decal in their kits and make you buy the "6.6 LITRE" decal separately. Most don't know, some don't care, and others do it on purpose. But it is incorrect. 2) The parking lamp bulbs should be 1157NA natural amber, not clear and one of them is out. Ditto on the taillights, some bulbs are burned out. Easy fix of course. 3) The emission decal under the hood is missing. I wonder who "restored" it for Mr. Reynolds, as they could have taken better care of the decals. Also, Mr. Reynolds was given a Trans Am by GM for a time every model year. When they stopped coming one year, after coming for a few years after the agreement, he called GM and politely asked about it and was told bluntly by a GM executive, "Oh yeah. Well, that deal was the lifetime of the president, not yours. And, he's dead" and promptly hung up on Mr. Reynolds. Pretty poor PR, I'd say.
@@CENTERLANE I'll bet that one of those "mega restoration houses" did it for Mr. Reynolds. Those places aren't known to pay really good attention to all of the details as they should.
So much misinformation..the movie was filmed in 76 and was released in 77 ..honeycomb grills didn't come on the s/e the base cars got those..that knock off jacket is from part 2 not part 1,that owners manual is from 1981 where Burt did a add for them.... That General Lee on the rack is the wrong year....this was not his last t/a that went up for auction
The photo of Burt sitting on the Trans Am is a sales brochure, not an owners manual. I believe that is from 1978. The same year is the Trans Am used and Smoky and the Bandit 2, not 1981. The 1981 had a different body design which was used in Smokey and the Bandit 3. The General Lee Charger that is in the back of their garage, see 1:51 n in the background is a 1970 Charger. You ARE correct on that. It is not a 1969 like the TV show/movie cars.
@Mike-0201 lmfao smokey and the bandit was filmed in 1976, no 78s were used in smokey and the bandit. Part 2 used 1980 turbo trans am. The owners manual that came with 81s had Burt in his jacket from part 2 sitting on top of a 81 turbo trans am yes an 81 which was the last yr of the 2nd gen trans am do some research. 82 was first yr for the 3rd gen which is a diff body style
For one , you are incorrect , the car in the movie are all 403 Oldsmobile 6.6 litres , the bonnet scoop is correct 6.6 TA as that is a 403 Olds , there were very few 400 pontiacs left in 1977 all left over 1976 or1975 s, all auto Trans Ams are T350 autos , only the 400 Pontiac was manual , 150 pounds heavier and only 15 HP more than the much better higher revving Olds 403 , that's what the 403 cars were used . Plus the 403 had 24 more ft pounds of torque!
You've got it all botched up. The first movie cars were 1976 model year cars with 1977 front ends. The 403 Olds was not used in 1976, only 1977-1979. The rumor was that a Chevrolet small block replaced the Pontiac engine for at least the first movie as the stock engines didn't have the gusto for the rigors of the movie. Not correct, for 1977-1978, the "6.6 LITRE" callout on the scoop could be EITHER a 403 Oldsmobile equipped car OR a base (180 HP) 400 Pontiac equipped car. The "T/A 6.6" callout on the scoop was reserved for the W72 version of the Pontiac 400 (200 HP in 1977, 220 in 1978-1979). Not correct. You could get the 400 Pontiac in 1977-1978 with either a manual or automatic transmission. 1979 Pontiac 400 V8s were all four speed manual cars (I own one) and were stockpiled W72 engines from 1978.
the honeycomb part of the grill is supposed to be black not gold. and those are the 2nd design hurst hatches which are wrong too. theres plenty of other little wrong parts too. he definitely built the car to flip wish they restored it more accurate.
My 77 Bandit had what I think were the original hurst hatches. (smaller cutouts than what came later) They leaked so bad and were super easy to pry open. My grills were indeed black but I've seen brochures that show the grills as gold too, which I think looks terrible.
So what he's saying is is that there are no actual promotion or in film used trans ams? They were all pretty much totally destroyed? So when we see Burt Reynolds signing one of these it's just somebody who duplicated a replica as best anyone could? And he gives it his stamp of approval 100 Grand I mean if it's not actually one of the cars used in the film that they could have taken care of it and not done so many crazy things, then yeah I can imagine spending a hundred grand on that car. An actual film used car. The 1978 from Smokey and the Bandit II was the Kick-Ass one for me. I mean to me that's the one. I mean the Pinnacle is the 78
It’s like that for all movie and TV show cars. Less than 50% of General Lees out there are real. I own a ‘58 Plymouth “Christine” clone. The one thing I tell people at car shows is that is NOT a movie car. I hate people who have clones and lie about them!!
My only question is: What is your day job? 100 % accurate specs or not. This isn't a cheap hobby. ( Working on the chicken coup and dad says why not buy an original bandit film car. ) We've all shared that experience.😂
T/A 6.6 Decal with a 403 Olds? Never happened. 6.6 Liter was used for the 403. T/A 6.6 was W72 400 specific and those cars ran 7 sec 0-60 times with the 4-speed.
In the movie they had the early Hurst T-tops later GM came up with a superior "Fisher T top" The big difference is the metal is a foot wide in the Hurst and half that in the bigger Fisher version.
I would, the Hurst were retro kits with a kit feel and the Fisher units were better materials wider with better latches and vinyl pouches to store them in the trunk. BTW in the four or so years I had mine they never leaked although I didn't use that as criteria for my statement. @@bige2012
Yep, my 77 had the Hurst T-Tops. I remember being so disappointed when I realized the newer cars had MUCH bigger glass. I got mine in 1985 and one of my best friends had a brand new Mustang GT with the Ford factory TTop's that had a super slim piece of metal in the middle.

Well, that deal was the lifetime of the president, not yours. And, he's dead" and promptly hung up on Mr. Reynolds. Pretty poor PR, I'd say.
Wow. You picked up on a lot by watching the video. You are correct on the details. Thanks for watching!!
@@CENTERLANE I'll bet that one of those "mega restoration houses" did it for Mr. Reynolds. Those places aren't known to pay really good attention to all of the details as they should.
Mine was a dog, I did meet a lot of mama bears though.
Lower front headlight is not working.
Good eye. Thanks for watching.
400 cubic inch NOT 400 cc's
You're correct. Damn. Thanks for watching.
And this isn’t the 6.6 Liter decal on shaker.
Wasn't the General a 69?
And in the trunk is an urn with Burt Reynolds ashes.
If he could get his hands on it, I’m sure there would be.
So if you haven’t put it into your name. Could a relative of Burt’s come out of the woodwork and take it off you claiming it’s part of his estate?
The last trans am he had was a converted modern canaro
Interesting fact. Thanks for watching.
🏎️
My only question is:
What is your day job?
100 % accurate specs or not.
This isn't a cheap hobby.
( Working on the chicken coup and dad says why not buy an original bandit film car. )
We've all shared that experience.😂
Based on the comment at the start of the video, an autograph on a car doesn't make it a legitimate movie car.
The hood alignment on that thing is F-ed. Look at the clip with Burt driving out of the trailer and compare it to the hood in the intro...Derp.
I had that exact car as a kid from 1985-87. I still can't believe I sold it. 🥲
I had cars I regret selling too. Thanks for watching.
T/A 6.6 Decal with a 403 Olds? Never happened. 6.6 Liter was used for the 403. T/A 6.6 was W72 400 specific and those cars ran 7 sec 0-60 times with the 4-speed.
Honey HUSH 😂
rip burt
Does anybody esle get tied of hearing rich people talk about their cars
Cool car but movie to me was always cheesy
Also not the 6.6 Litre & ones in movie didn’t have the hurst t-tops like this one does.
In the movie they had the early Hurst T-tops later GM came up with a superior "Fisher T top" The big difference is the metal is a foot wide in the Hurst and half that in the bigger Fisher version.
@@bailey9r yea I know. But even the fisher body t-top leaked some, on my '78 they did. So wouldn't say "superior".
I got mine in 1985 and one of my best friends had a brand new Mustang GT with the Ford factory TTop's that had a super slim piece of metal in the middle.
too bad it doesn't run
I only liked it because of how horrible it is and I feel sorry for you. Dont lose your day job.
Good. I mean you tried. So....
Thank you SOOO much for reminding us what a dick is...
I love the car but collectors are a p. in the a.
Thanks for watching.
I want to buy your General Lee!
A bit of new Smokey and the Bandit in my ....Pioneers of Power .....150 pages on Facebook...
