PART 1 - My second attempt to walk across Scotland in a completely straight line

- After three failed attempts to cross an entire country in a straight line (Wales 2021, Scotland 2022, Wales 2022), I gathered a new team together to help me conquer Scotland at the second time of asking. Could we succeed this time, or would another disaster be on the cards?
Idea inspired by @GeoWizard.

GeoWizard - Retro adventure switching between calm natural scenery and farmland paranoia
Fieldhouses - Jolly lads jollying their way around like they just felt like it on a whim
ChessTeacher - Blair Witch Project
Haha, spot on! I actually made the mistake of watching the Blair Witch Project about a week before I tried my first Straight-Line Mission. As if being dumped in a field in the pitch black wasn't bad enough...
It's the X files like music score.
That hiding at 24:30 is tense. We are blessed to have *3* different groups releasing straight line country videos this weekend.
To be fair, I was just worried that the farmer would see us hopping his fence - otherwise there's not much he could've done other than shout at us.
Yeah - I'll be watching the other two videos later!
Your channel is one of the hidden gems of youtube, thoroughly looking forward to this.
Thank you very much. Hope you enjoy this series!
Spot on, it really is. The deadpan humour just makes this. Marcus is so naturally funny without trying its amazing
@@Nooticus you're too kind!
Wow, it's straight line Christmas! 3 different channels doing straight line missions at once! Great video I look forward to the next one
I will just say - it's not a coincidence 😅
I watched GeoWizard and the Fieldhouses' attempts last night. Mine is slightly slower-paced, but each to their own I guess...
Same here :)
Don't compere them 2 to this one cmon .
'I'd eaten a dodgy pizza 2 days earlier from a place in Willesden Junction' absolutely KILLED me. OMG Marcus your narrating style is bloody hilarious I love your channel and personality so much. Out of all 3 of the regular straight line missioners who are are all uploading simultaneously this time, you have BY FAR the funniest narration and execution. No, I dont expect GeoWizard from this channel, but why would I want that when this is arguably more entertaining!!! Amazing work!
Haha, that's very kind - glad you're enjoying this series so much! I need to catch up on my rivals' videos later...
This isn't a serial killer documentary, the music in this video feels like it is.
Ha, the question is - which one of us has an axe hidden in our backpack?
Easily one of my favorite series on youtube, thank you so much Marcus, you and the gang are really inspirational.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the series.
Who would have thought a guy walking across Wales would inspire so many people!
Tom the OG
Absolutely! GeoWizard will always be the original and the best. It must be one of the strangest 'crazes' known to man!
The menacing music is fast becoming meme-like. Expecting an alien abduction in the woods or some zombie vampire sheep. Looking forward to watching the next part !
Haha, well with my luck you shouldn't rule it out!
Excelllent effort lads and great intertwining of footage making things genuinely tense and uneasy. Good to see the Lynchian vibe still there. Good luck for the mission boys
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the series. The horror soundtrack will always be there...
We're back on the straight line! Your Team and their RPG stats are certainly interesting.
Only one of us can lose a fight with a cardboard box...
without geowizzard, the non chess playing world would not know Marcus the chess Teacher. So I salute you Tom. Crack on Marcus
Haha, for better or for worse, that is the question! Hope you enjoy the series.
@@marcusthechessteacher I love your long format episodes, and your assembled motley crew... But I feel they are not very algorithm friendly. Archie Fieldhouse seems to be onto a slicker format with his new England straight line video. That might get some more traction. Either way I'm happy to carry on watching.
@@onlineo2263 I'll watch that tomorrow along with GeoWizard's latest upload. Maybe you're right. GeoWizard certainly seems to taken them under his wing and their channel has exploded in popularity. I need the same help!
@@marcusthechessteacher you need to do a colab with Tim Traveller or someone similar! E. G a tad nerdy but also rather popular. Maybe Geoff Marshall but his audience maybe too much trains!
@@onlineo2263 I probably should do a collab sometime. Not sure how much I want to become an 'influencer' though...
Good start Marcus - seems like you got yourself a decent set of lads to make a crack at it & of course Scotland's right to roam takes out some of the chance of failure. Hope the series of vids do well!
Thanks! Yes, this team is certainly the most competent I've had so far. Will it be enough to propel us across Scotland...?
Great to see you back on the horse Marcus, been waiting with bated breath for this one!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the series.
I’ve been looking forward to this for a few months now.. and loving it!! Well done so far to you and the team! Forests are so hard
Thanks for watching! Yeah, that forest took us ages to get through.
Wow this is genuinely brilliant, well done. This is as good as the Fieldhouses and Geo Wizards straight line content.
p.s. an elderly couple were killed by some sheep in NZ last month, so it looks like Marcus is having the last laugh on that one... ah, maybe not laugh, bad phrasing, but his hesitation turned out to be potentially justified 😅😅
Thanks for watching! Glad you're enjoying the Straight-Line Mission buffet going on at the moment...
Sheep can be dangerous! They can suffocate you to death with their fluffiness...
Thoroughly enjoying this Marcus! We were thinking that your straying outside of 25 metres might be down to a GPS glitch though! Look at the curve before and after, then there is just one spike where the GPS malfunctioned?
agreed, i think it would be rough to rule out a platinum when the deviation is so erratic, i think it's a glitch
I didn't notice that to be fair. It's difficult to know for sure, but maybe we can be a tad lenient and say we are still on for a Platinum Run.
Great vid, can't wait to watch the failed previous attempts now!!!!
Thanks. Don't worry, there are plenty to keep you occupied!
Nice to have you doing this and being part of the straight line club, I enjoyed the last one
Thanks for watching! This is my fourth attempt - I'm gradually learning...
@@marcusthechessteacheroh, second Scotland - but yes :)
Straight lines everywhere this weekend! Do fancy another, does seem like a bug once you've done one. At least for those that seek type 2 fun :)
Yes, it is a gruelling but incredible challenge.
It's very hard to say what constitutes crossing a country exactly. This was certainly an epic mission and they did very admirably. Personally though, it feels like they crossed a 40 mile chunk of the Highlands, not an entire country.
That's a fair point. GeoWizard reckons it's fine though, and in fact he has planned a similar route across the Highlands that he discounted in the end. Most parts of Scotland are probably too wide to be seriously attempted, and there are high-speed rail lines to contend with.
The sinister music is back! The longer the note, the more dread
I can't resist an overarching sense of imminent doom...!
This is so good. Keep it up buddy!
Thanks for watching!
I’m so chuffed about love all you’re series. Thanks mr chess teacher 😁
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the series.
Great video man!!!
Thanks for watching!
Epic, so glad your back ! :D
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the series.
Great video my dude but the background music drowns you out a bit sometimes! Looking forward to part 2 :)
Thanks for watching! Yes, I've noted that and will tone down the music for future episodes...
Great stuff so far. Been waiting for this.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the series.
@@marcusthechessteacher Alasdair looked a bit shattered after day 1. Looked like the drive had taken its toll. A good night's sleep and he will be superman again
@@cranswil Alasdair is not a man to be defeated easily (as you will see later on)!
I thought you were done with these since the Wales one, glad to see you back at it. So far there are only 3 channels doing straight line mission videos right (Tom, Archie and you)
At the time, it felt like Wales 2 would be my last one, but as tough as these missions can be, they are also very enjoyable as part of a team.
Wasn't expecting the Metroid inspired intro music :)
I think it is based on that actually! I get my music from Newgrounds Audio Portal.
Great video - background music could be dialed down ❤
Thanks - I will alter this for the remaining episodes.
agreed!
Excellent work lads keep it up. I disagree with the other people, I need more loud creepy music if anything.
Haha, thanks for watching! I'll keep the creepy music, but will make sure people can hear the commentary as well...
My immediate impression is to man people with to much stuff at the wrong time of year, but let’s see how this goes seems like a good watch regardless
You might be right about the first two points! April is a good time to do it though - there are tics and insects in the summer and snow in the winter...
Awesome job!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the series.
great video! But please turn down the volume of the background music if possible
Thanks - I will alter this for the remaining episodes.
Old service station pizza strikes again!
I don't know which pizza joint in Willesden Junction it was, but one day I will find it... and they will pay the penalty...
Where should I expect to find a straightline mission across Scotland, if not on a chess channel?
Indeed - the most logical place!
Superb. Just make sure the voiceover is louder than everything else.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the series. Noted - I will fix this for future episodes.
Wtf have i clicked on love the intros funny as am from scotland so lets see how yous do and might as well sub to find out the ending also am from cumbernauld lol good luck 👍
Thanks for watching - hope you enjoy the series!
I havent watched the other episodes yet but your deviation of just over 25m may be less. You drew the deviation measuring line slightly diagonal rather than at a right angle to your actual straight line. So the real deviation may be less than 25m. Maybe if you tried measuring the deviation with a line as perpendicular to your straight line as possible you could find it was only 24.5m or something
You could be right, although I admit later that the 'spike' on the output data seemed to be just a glitch and we were still on for a Platinum Run.
It's going to end in disaster isn't it
Who's to say? One thing's for sure - this is the most competent team I've been part of.
The team is the problem. You need to solo it ultralight with a good van based team. Follow Russ Cook's strategy
I clicked straight line mission but somehow I got hitchhikers guide??
A Hitchhiker's Guide to Food Poisoning...
You should maybe consider packing a folding saw if you do another mission.🇬🇧👍
Haha, you mean to hack down brambles or to cut off various body parts like in 127 Hours?
Yes, small fallen trees and brambles.👍
32:50 But aren’t you doing this for the exposure? 😂
Seriously though - hope it went well!
No pain, no gain!
My sheep where like. Na stranger danger. 😅🤣.
It’s a right to RESPONSIBLE ACCESS not a “right to roam” Should add *. Xx
Were you the farmer I hid from? If so, many apologies! We tried not to damage your fence...
@@marcusthechessteacher no that was my Unkle 🤣
love it, but please use a digital stabilizer lmao
Not sure how to do that but I'll investigate. Do you mean when the footage is recorded or in the editing phase?
Thanks for watching though!
The music choice is a little odd and the sound mixing let's this video down a little. The writing is quite entertaining.
Yeah, I didn't make the voiceover audio loud enough - that's been fixed for Episodes 2 and 3.
Mate the audio levels could use a tweak
Noted - thanks. This'll be sorted out for the next episode.
This is so good
We should play chess btw
Thanks for watching!
Well if you live near Epsom then feel free to come down...
Hey Marcus, watching a film on channel 4catch up. It's from your adventure with Daniel Radcliffe in the Film called "Jungle!"
Haha, I had to look that up! I see there is a character called Marcus - I wonder how much he resembles me...
@@marcusthechessteacher you need 2watch it. To tell has what really happened? You've probably got the footage for it about to be released one day!
@@cranswil I'll see if I can find the trailer...
Do you have repelling gear in case you come up on a building?
Luckily I have mastered the power of telekinesis, so any buildings on our route will shift out the way automatically.
That’s way better than my idea
i like the enthusiasm of this channel.
but it's like watching the special olympics of straight line missioning.
also - blisters after 4 miles. c'mon.
In the first one, Marcus has to beat a hasty retreat when he encounters some sheep only a mile into the challenge.
Brilliant to watch though! Could be tough, 44 miles, 5 miles per day, looks like we're in for a nine part adventure! :)
There's probably some truth in that. But if you came here expecting GeoWizard-level competence, you're much mistaken...
@@MrProcrastinato Not even a mile - I think it was more like 300 yards into the trip!
"Well I'm not going through that"
@@marcusthechessteacher brilliant, haha! Very enjoyable viewing. Looking forward to the next instalment!
What’s your favorite opening?
For white or black? ♟
@@marcusthechessteacher … both?
@@OurCognitiveSurplus I have many favourites! I can't name one as white, but as black I play the French and Caro-Kann.
How do you get the 15m deviation alert on the GPS? such an awesome feature
Fantastic if they remembered to actually turn it on...
That is a good question - I have absolutely no idea. This feature was on Tom's GPS - shame we didn't have it turned on...
5 too many?
Check out my Scotland 1 series (end of Part 2 / Part 3) for what happens when you attempt one of these things solo!
why so many pointless fences across moorland???
Beasts.
I reckon something to do with dangerous sheep.
Going on the height they are for managing the deer.
what are you hiding for? youre in Scotland. the farmer doesnt care. tell him what youre doing and you will get another subscriber
My worry at the time was that the farmer might not like me climbing his fence. I guess there's not much he could've done about it, but I didn't feel like angering the guy unnecessarily.
@@marcusthechessteacher fair enough but as long as youre not damaging anything they are usually pretty friendly. youre more likely to get a bad reaction sneaking about.
@@VeritySnatch Yes, you're probably right. I blame GeoWizard for making me paranoid about farmers!
@@marcusthechessteacher im hooked. you have my sub. good luck with the midgies and weather. careful removing the ticks as Lyme is everywhere up here
@@VeritySnatch Thanks for watching! Yes, we did end up with a couple of ticks but managed to remove them fairly quickly.
that backround music is terrible for ADHD listeners. omg... I wanna watch it, but that bass line is causing it to be really hard to watch.
Sorry about that. I went for a horror-movie feel mixed with The Magnificent Seven...
@@marcusthechessteacher totally understand, just unfortuantely cant watch it with sound :( keep up the great content
