Can I complete my most epic mission to date? or will a hunting party end it.. [ENGLAND PART 6]

  • This gargantuan adventure reaches its climax 19 miles from the North Sea coast, and as if this mammoth 5th day hadn’t tested me enough, I was now perched on the edge of a private hunting estate watching men furiously wave flags on my line to the soundtrack of multiple shotgun blasts. With plenty of farmland and another terrible forest beyond that, this mission was far from over. Will I make it through and become the first person ever to cross England in a straight line? Make yourselves comfy and find out.

This is a deep pull from history so indulge me, these are almost gone memories, but way back, when I was in the air cadets, when we were spending a long weekend hanging around a couple of hills in Shropshire, we basically hung around with our eyes wide open in the pitch black of night for like, a very long time, and every time we had to look at a map after that we used a red filter on our lights because it wouldn't destroy our night vision, which we had built up by hanging around in a bush for half an hour while corporal dipshit opined at length about Pamela Andersons' tits. And scary sheep rustlers, who if they found us, would execute us wth shotguns. Later that weekend, somebody threw me into a river. Something to do with wavelengths and cones and rods and that.

@@StuffandThings_ Hard but possible. I'd suggest using a line that starts in the North Farthing of the Shire, near the town of Scary. This line has several advantages.
You'd immediately cross the Brandywine river, and enter Buckland. The old forest would be a nightmare to pass through but luckily this line only cuts across the top corner of the forest. After that, you have a passage through the barrow downs and onto the open moorland of Cardolan. This part will be incredibly easy as it's just hilly land with no human presence for 200 miles.
You'd then have to cross the Bruinen and several smaller rivers entering Dunland, but this brings us to the hardest challenge of the trip - The Misty Mountains. Thankfully this line takes us through a part of the mountain range that looks quite passable. After the mountains we once again clip the very corner of a forest (in this case Fangorn) and that brings us to some lovely open grassland of the Wold. We can make good time here, as long as we avoid patrolling Rohirrim horsemen.
After canoeing over the river Andiun, it's a hilly climb over the dangerous rocky crags of Emyn muil followed by another tricky section in the marshes of the dead.
Finally this line takes us straight through Cirith Ungol. Provided you avoid being eaten by Shelob, it's a fairly straightforward walk to Mount Doom.
Edit: fuck it. I'm making this into an animation.

Something you may wish to look into for future missions, if you should choose to do them, is satellite tasking. You can pay imaging satellite operators to capture images of areas of interest, and it's not that expensive these days - with 50cm resolution (sufficient to identify areas of felled trees) you'll typically pay about £10-20 per km^2, with a lot of operators offering minimum orders in the 1-5km^2 range. Their services are cheap because they use imaging satellite constellations in polar sun-synchronous orbits (SSO) to get coverage of the whole planet as it rotates on its axis, meaning they can just wait until the target area is under the flight path during daylight rather than needing to do any kind of active orbital adjustment (which quickly gets into six-figure-plus PoA territory). Most of these satellites have very short orbital periods, on the order of hours, so you can expect to get images back within a day. Could be invaluable for getting up-to-date views of areas where you expect trees to have fallen in recent bad weather events.

Tom you may not see this but thank you for doing what you do. Because of you I have changed my outlook on life. I'm a trucker and I've worked my ass off for years but next year I'm planning a trip. I'm headed to Norway and in the Spirit of how not to travel Europe I'm going to try to go from Norway to Greece in the most interesting and creative ways possible with nothing but a backpack full of Essentials a passport a gopro and a sense of adventure. I've been a follower and a supporter of yours for a long time and as I type this I'm looking up at the no roads and Wales mission posters hanging in my bedroom. Truly. Thank you for being your awesome self and spurring me on to seek adventure as well. This channel and the videos you produce (expertly btw) mean a lot to me. My life and the lives of many people would be of lesser value without them. Congratulations on the successful mission Tom. Cheers from a Norwegian Irishman living in Canada

Thank you for sharing your plans, it really does sound like your perspective on life has changed, for the better, I should add. That alone deserves recognition.
I wish you nothing but the best for your trip away. I'd call it an adventure! I'd love to see footage of it, if you feel up to filming it.
You've got Norwegian heritage, so the Norway part of your trip might feel different somehow. Perhaps.
In any case, finding your way to Greece will no doubt be difficult, but I think it's possible, and this random TH-cam commenter will support you and your journey!
All the best, have fun, and most importantly... Enjoy yourself, you deserve it.

Love the tweaking the line idea, I've thought about it on every straight line mission I watched.

I've been watching you since the first mission and man I can't say how good it feels to watch these videos. It gives me a break from my life and I'm able to celebrate with you on your highs, and feel like I'm there for your lows. I admire your courage and have the upmost respect for you.
Congratulations on the baby as well even though I'm guessing he or she hasn't been born yet.
You mentioned tweaking the line to make it silver. I don't see that as controversial. Your mission is to cross the country in a straight line. You used that line as a guide. So it would make sense that in the end, you can say that's the line you crossed it with. So, 100% you got silver. Good on ya, buddy. Sending love from Canada. All the best.

Well done, Tom! That was amazing! Once again, I enjoyed every minute of it. It might be a bronze run, but your storytelling is still platinum. You can be really proud of yourself and your responsible decisions in the forests. Wishing you all the best for this new episode in your life!

Congratulations Tom! Also honestly don’t fret about any dark footage, if anything it adds to the drama.

What an absolutely epic achievement, this series has been fantastic from start to finish.
Looking forward to seeing what the future brings, even if it'll be a little smaller scale.

The editing and sountrack of the gorse patch part (9:42) actually made me laugh out loud. Brilliant.

So incredibly proud of you Tom!! You’re such an inspiration, and not just to psychopaths who wanna take the challenges like you do, but to everyone who wants to try a little harder, to get in better shape, to follow their most out-there dreams, to everyone. Love and light brother, cheers 🍻🩵

Been greatly looking forward to watching you smash it in this last episode, unfortunately I was admitted to hospital on Friday and at the age of 29, I’ve been diagnosed with fairly bad asthma, there goes my chance of doing anything quite like these adventures you do, but I’ll continue to look forward to whatever you do in the future Tom! Thanks a bunch for the wonderful viewing experience and giving me something to look forward to whilst restricted to my hospital bed!

That's some tough news. But don't let that stop you getting out for your own adventures, they don't have to be on the same scale. I get out for plenty of missions and mischief, many of which are challenging for me but would be a breeze for many others. It's about adventuring on your own level and doing what you can ❤ but definitely still enjoy Tom's crazy missions! 😁

@@CampingRulesOkay thanks for the kind words! Certainly shan’t let it stop me fully, my adventure might be limited to a paced footpath walk or a days fishing on the lakes rather than mad dashes across farm and moorland though 🤣

Amazing team work. The funniest part for me is seeing how much Tom's beard has grown throughout this mission.
