I raced my straight line rivals across the Isle of Man (and it was epic)

    Here it is. The first of it's kind; a straight line mission race.
    A year ago my straight line missioning rivals Archie and Adam Fieldhouse challenged me to a race across the Isle of Man, and in December 2023 it happened.
    10 miles across mountains, freezing lakes and farmland. Full of excitement, drama, pain and one rather angry landowner.
    But who will come out on top? the more experienced hedge hopper? or the hungry youngsters with a point to prove..
    On the back of my recent Wales success and feeling fitter than ever, I fancied myself as favorite, but as we would both learn anything can happen in a straight line race...

      Seriously, I've said it on the other straight line videos but she's easily the unsung hero of the channel, being Tom's lifeline at each of the checkpoints, resupplying him in the field, providing safe places to rest and all that. I'd love to see a companion video to one of these runs of what her day is like.

    • @luckyspurs
      @luckyspurs 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +93

      I'm a bit sad, from Tom's introduction, that other people aren't doing it.
      The problem with GeoWizard is we like watching him doing anything; meaning it's very hard to make the challenge catch on and become the selling point, rather than the channel doing it.

    • @Bnio
      @Bnio 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +172

      Eh, it's probably for the best. It's like reaction channels; most of them are garbage. Just shocked faces and overacting. I fear most copycats would be the same and not get why Tom's videos are so charming.
      Actually, it's kinda like all the Geoguessr channels that suck all the fun out of exploring a place by turbo-charging their meta-info knowledge of what generation of Google camera it is or how many stripes are on the telephone pole.

    • @lavahawk
      @lavahawk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +46

      @@Bnio as far as the geoguessr channels, I don't think it sucks the fun out of it, its just a different game they are playing, very cool and impressive in its own right

    • @ExpedientFalcon
      @ExpedientFalcon 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      @@BnioI don't mind the phone pole meta, because you'd see a phone pole in real life. But the cam and car metas are a bit unfortunate. It is part of the game, and if you want to compete at the highest levels then you have to learn them, but it would be much cooler with only things you'd see if you were there in person.

    • @YellowSkarmory
      @YellowSkarmory 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      @@ExpedientFalcon As a GeoGuessr player who has been heavily in the competitive scene, I agree, and I think a fair amount of others would too. We (well, at least I) got into this because we love geography and all the little details around the world, not to learn what google car and camera generation are in each country and province. (To be fair, I'm an offender here having mapped out some of this stuff before; it's not like I'm going to stop some of this from being discovered, if it's not already known...)
      There are some scripts/add-ons that remove the car at least, which is usually the biggest offender. Unfortunately, camera generation is pretty much impossible to remove.
      But yeah, competitive GeoGuessr is a completely different game from the one Tom plays. I still have a lot fun exploring places both in street view and just through google maps in general, but I also enjoy trying to get a really good score using every bit of information I have.

    hey Tom, if you do something like this again I would recommend setting a minimum amount of time required for the pit stops. I think it goes against the spirit of a good race to potentially risk your health just to gain a few minutes on the other team. in this case it went well as it was a short race, but for anything longer that could potentially involve sleeping as well, I would highly consider it

    A piece of advice for the cramps: extend your leg to the maximum. I've noticed that when the cramp comes you hold your leg and try to keep it as still as possible. That's a very natural thing to do as moving it hurts, but from my experience extending the leg and stretching it makes the pain go away much faster .

    • @SheepStewD
      @SheepStewD 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I second this! I was blown away when I learned that not everyone knows this, as it makes such a huge difference. As soon as you feel the cramp setting in you should immediately straighten your leg, pull your toes up and keep doing it for like less than a minute and it will be gone without any leftover pain. In my experience the cramps just get more frequent and worse if you let the first one get too far.

      I sometimes get very painful cramp surfing. Usually if I've taken an intense wipeout and it throws yours arms and legs into very unnatural positions. Stretching your leg out as far as you can and then point your toes up as much as you can at the same time does the trick every time. If you don't do that it is agony!

    I don't know if it's a UK cultural thing or what, but as an Aussie watching these videos, I just don't really understand the obsession some of these UK farmers seem to have with chasing someone down if they happen to pass through their property. If someone jumped a fence and ran through my backyard I'd probably think "Ok, that's unusual" but if they clearly kept going and didn't intend to cause harm, I'd just shrug it off and keep going about my day.
    The way these guys seem to go out of their way to chase you down and interrogate you, and even when provided with an explanation, still threaten to call the police, I dunno but I can't relate to it at all. I know on some level your property is your property, but these guys are clearly just passing through and are completely harmless. It almost seems petty to me.

      When farmers chase down tresspassers, they are typically doing so out of preservation for their crops which can be damaged by excessive tresspassery, the safety and wellbeing of their livestock, and as a matter of Health & Safety. They need to know they can run combine harvesters through their fields, without fear of slicing up a group of people playing Hide & Seek.
      Also, the man in question was not actually farmer. People were tresspassing through his garden, not his field.
      You'll notice he actually turned a blind eye to the first two tresspassers. He drew the line at three tresspassers, because for all you know, there could be dozens, tens, even hundreds of people running through your garden, disturbing your privacy, trampling your lawn, and damaging your flowers etc.
      People have a fundamental right to privacy in their own home, and on their own property.
      Once it became clear it was just the three of them, he seemed to calm down and probably didn't bother calling the Police.
